Practical structures are subject not only to tension but also to shear and torsional loading. In this study, the mode 1 and 2 stress intensity factors of specimens were calculated by using elastic finite element mothod. The stress fields at the crack tip subjected to mixed-mode loading were also studied by usingf eleatic finite element method and were compared with theoretical results. The three-point-bending, four-point-bending, and mixed-mode-loading experiment were carried out. And, crack propagation rate da/dN and crack growth direction were examined. Also, the elastic finite element method was applied to calculate the stress intensity factors of branch crack tip and we relate the stress intenity factor range of branch crack tip(the result of FEM) to crack propagation rate(the experimental result). The .DELTA. -da/dN relation corelated with that of mode 1.

This study investigates the behavior of fatigue crack propagating between holes of holes filled with another materials. When holes of the holes filled with another materials are located symmetrically near a center crack, it is noted that the crack propagation rate is influenced by both the bonding force of the brazing part and the elastic modulus of another material. It is experimentally and analytically confirmed that the center crack stops when its tip reaches near the center line of the holes and a small crack is initiated from the boundaries of holes of the holes filled with another materials and it propagates to final fracture.

In this study, fatigue crack propagation in composite material under fatigue is investigated by simulation result. When another material on the specimen exists vertically to the crack line, the phenomena that crack may go straight or propagate along the boundary face according to the elastic modulus ratio of another material to matrix are investigated with compact tension specimen by compliance method. Crack propagation direction is evaluated by compliance method. By arranging this study result systematically about the crack propagation behavior due to the stiffness of inhomogeneous material, high-tech material (automobile, aircraft and steel industry) can be improved. The estimation of safety design and life (construction & nuclear power station, etc.) will be of great value industrially.

초록 The validity, of a single parameter such as stress intensity, factor K or J-integral in traditional fracture mechanics depends strongly on the geometry, and loading condition. Therefore the second parameter like T-stress measuring the stress constraint is additionally needed to characterize the general crack-tip fields. While many, research works have been done to verify, the J-T description of elastic-plastic crack-tip stress fields in plane strain specimens, limited works (especially. for bimaterials) have been performed to describe the structural surface crack-front stress fields with the two parameters. On this background, via detailed three dimensional finite element analyses for surface-cracked plates and straight pipes of homogeneous materials and bimaterials under various loadings, we investigate the extended validity or limitation of the two parameter approach. We here first develop a full 3D mesh generating program for semi-elliptical surface cracks, and calculate elastic T-stress from the obtained finite element stress field. Comparing the J-T predictions to the elastic-plastic stresses from 3D finite element analyses. we then confirm the extended validity of fracture mechanics methodology based on the J-T two parameters in characterizing the surface crack-front fields of welded plates and pipes under various loadings.
In this study, the strength and failure mechanism of red sandstones with combined defects were investigated by uniaxial compression tests on red sandstones with different crack angles using two-dimensional particle flow code numerical software, and their mechanical parameters and failure process were studied and analyzed. The results showed that the mechanical characteristics such as peak strength, peak strain, and elastic modulus of the samples with prefabricated combined defects were significantly inferior than those of the intact samples. With increasing crack angle from 15° to 60°, the weakening area of cracks increased, elastic modulus, peak strength, and peak strain gradually reduced, the total number of cracks increased, and more strain energy was released. In addition, the samples underwent initial brittle failure to plastic failure stage, and the failure form was more significant, leading to peeling phenomenon. However, with increasing crack angle from 75° to 90°, the crack-hole combination shared the stress concentration at the tip of the crack-crack combination, resulted in a gradual increase in elastic modulus, peak strain and peak strength, but a decrease in the number of total cracks, the release of strain energy reduced, the plastic failure state weakened, and the spalling phenomenon slowed down. On this basis, the samples with 30° and 45° crack-crack combination were selected for further experimental investigation. Through comparative analysis between the experimental and simulation results, the failure strength and final failure mode with cracks propagation of samples were found to be relatively similar.
Numerical calculations are made in order to find a possible correlation between the J-integral and the crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) in dynamic nonlinear fracture experiments of 3-point bend(3PB) specimens. Both elastic-plastic and elastic-viscoplastic materials are considered at different impact velocities. The J-integral may be estimated from the crack mouth opening displacement which can be measured directly from photographs taken during dynamic experiments.
In this work, prediction of fatigue life and fatigue crack growth are studied. 4th order polynominal function is presented to describe the crack growth behaviors from artifical pit of SM45C steel. Crack growth curves obtained from 4th order polyminal growth equations are in good agreement with experimental data The crack growth behaviors at arbitrary stress levels and investigated by the concept of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics using ${\Delta}J$. Fatigue life prediction are carried out by numerical integral method. Prediction lives obtained by proposed method in this study, is in good agreement with the experimental ones. Life prediction results calculated by using of ${\Delta}J$ better than those of ${\Delta}K$.

In this paper, the plastic zone size ahead of the crack tip of DENT specimen and the crack growth length under cyclic loading were measured by ESPI system. These results of the plastic zone size measured by ESPI system were compared with the plastic zone size proposed by Irwin. The results of tile crack growth length measured by it were also compared with them measured by the image analysis system. It is confirmed that it is possible to measure the plastic zone and crack growth length.
The magnitude of the plastic zone around the crack tip of DENT(Double Edge Notched Tension) specimen and the crack growth length under cyclic loading were measured by ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) system. The measured magnitude of plastic zone was compared with the equations proposed by Irwin and calculated by a nonlinear static method of MSC/NASTRAN. The measured crack growth length by ESPI system was also compared with the obtained data by the image analysis system. From the study, it is confirmed that the plastic zone and crack growth length can be measured accurately with the high-tech equipment.
