Softening os the name used for decreasing bending moment at advanced flexural deformation. To accommodate softening deformation in analysis, it is assumed that a hinge has finite length. The softening analysis of R/C frames relies on the primary assumption that softening occurs over a finite hinge length and that the moment-curvature relationship for any section may be closely described by a trilinear approximation. A stiffness matrix for elastic element with softening regions are derived and the stiffness matrix allows extension of the capability of an existing computer program for elastic-plastic analysis to the softening situation. The effect of softening on the collapse load of R/C frame is evaluated.

The dynamic fatigue life equation is applied to uniaxial tensile test. The resultant equations far the surface energy and fracture toughness are calculated with the data from the tensile test and compared with the ones from ASTM E399 test. During the crack propagation under model loading, the material of the crack tip undergoes the process of the elastic-plastic deformation in the uniaxial tensile test. The surface energy per unit area is proportional to the ratio of plastic and elastic elongations. The calculated fracture toughness of the metals are very well coincident to the ASTM E399's test results.
The Hengda Group super high-rise building in Jinan City uses the frame-core tube structural system. With a height of 238.3 m, it is above the B-level height limit of 150 m for buildings within 7-magnitude seismic fortification zones. Therefore, it is necessary to apply performance-based seismic design to this super high-rise building. In this study, response spectrum analysis and comparative analysis of the structure are conducted using two software applications. Moreover, elastic time-history analysis, seismic analysis under an intermediate earthquake, and elastic-plastic time-history analysis under rare earthquakes are performed. Based on the analysis results, corresponding strengthening measures are implemented at weaker structural locations, such as corners, wall ends connected to framed girders, and coupling beams connected to framed girders. The failure mode and failure zone of major stress components of the structure under rare earthquakes are analysed. The conclusions to this research demonstrate that weaker locations and important parts of the structure satisfy the requirements for elastic-plastic deformation in the event of rare earthquakes.

Based on the formulation which incorporates large deformation and anisotropy, an elastic-plastic finite element code is developed with membrane element to include the contact treatment. For the analysis of the general sheet metal forming process with contact condition, the treatment of contact is considered by employing the successive skew coordinate system. Three kinds of sheet metal forming processes with contact conditions are analyzed; stretching of a square diaphragm with a hemispherical punch, deep drawing of a circular cup and deep drawing of a square cup. Then the computational results are compared with the experiment. The computed loads and the distribution of the thickness strain are in good agreement with the experiment for all cases. However, the computational results of the thickness strain show the effect of bending can not be ignored in the deep drawing process whereas the effect of bending is negligible in stretching.

At the time when nanostructured materials (NSMs) are becoming a major focus of materials research, the attention of researchers is turning more to their mechanical performance. In contrast with conventional coarse grained materials, which are either strong or ductile, but rarely both at the same time, it is expected that with NSMs both high strength and ductility can be achieved and confirmed by several experimental studies. In spite of the significant interest and efforts in the mechanical properties of NSMs, deformation mechanisms during plastic deformation as well as elastic deformation are not well established yet. In this talk, the deformation mechanisms of NSMs under various grain sizes, temperatures and strain rates were investigated. It is based on recent modelling that appears to provide a conclusive description of the phenomenology and the mechanisms underlying the mechanical properties of NSMs. Based on the theoretical model that provides an adequate description of the grain size dependence of elasticity and plasticity covering all grain size range from coarse down to the nanoscale, the tensile deformation response of NSMs, especially focusing on the deformation mechanisms was investigated.

This paper describes the application of the finite element method to the large deflection elastic plastic analysis and ultimate load calculation of axisymmetric shell of revolution with initial imperfection subjected to external pressure. The nonlinear equilibrium equations are linearized by the successive incremental method and are solved by the combination of load increment and iteration scheme with considering plastic deformation theory. To get the more realistic effect of large deflection, corrected coordinats and directions of applied load ar every load increment steps are used. The effects of the plasticity, initial imperfection and the shape of shells on the ultimate load of clamped circular cap under external pressure are investigated. Consequently, the following conclusions are obtained; (1) At same geometric parameter $\lambda$, each shape of clamped circular caps yield same elastic ultimate loads in both cases, i.e. with and without initial imperfections, whereas, in the case of elastic-plastic state the shell becomes thicker, the ultimate loads are getting smaller. (2) The effects of initial imperfection to ultimate load are most significant in the elastic case and are more senstive in the elastic-plastic state with the thinner shells.

Quasi-instanteneously performed creep loading is probably one way to seperate the viscous and the plastic creep from the elastic deformation. For mature concrete no differences seem to exist depending on whether the loading is rapidly applied or not. At early age the plastic deformations probably dominate the deformation. A series of test have been done to measure the quasi-instanteneous deformation in concrete specimens according to loading durations and concrete ages. The present study indicates that even very short-term loading contains creep deformation. As concrete is younger and load duration is longer, the proportion of creep deformation in quasi-instanteneous deformation is increased.

In many metal forming processes, it is common to use stress rings for reducing elastic deformation and failures of forming dies. But, shrink fit of dies inner diameter of die insert, machining is reuqired after shrink fit processes. The reduction of inner diameter can be predicted by the analysis of elastic-plastic finite element method. The dimension of dies before shrink fit can be determined to minimize or remove machining after shrink fit processes by deformation analysis of die. The computation of contacting stresses along die surface was analyzied by rigid plasitic finite element method, and data were interpolated by the contact search algorithm. In this paper, we propose the analysis method of forging dies after shrink fit and forming to improve dimensional accuracy of final products.
Wrinkling is one of the major defects in sheet metal products and may be also attributable to the wear of the tool. The initiation and growth of wrinkles are influenced by many factors such as stress state, mechanical properties of the sheet material, geometry of the body, and contact condition. It is difficult to analyze the wrinkling initiation and growth considering the factors because the effects of the factors are very complex and the wrinkling behavior may show a wide variation for small deviations of the factors. In this study, the bifurcation theory is introduced for the finite element analysis of wrinkling initiation and growth. All the above mentioned factors are conveniently considered by the finite element method. The finite element formulation is based on the incremental deformation theory and elastic-plastic elements considering the planar anisotropy of the sheet metal. The proposed method is verified by employing a column buckling problem. And then, the initiation and growth of wrinkling in deep drawing of cylindrical cup are analyzed.

In hard and brittle materials as advanced ceramics indented by a hard indenter, the indenter's transition radius, was defined as critical radius which distinguishes the occurrence of the first plastic deformation from the elastic cracking as the first damaging event, is analytically and experimentally investigated. The analytical result is shown that the critical load, which not enlarge pre-existing cracks as the form of median crack beneath a indenter, is constant, and is determined by the order of $k_{IC}$$^{4}$$P_{Y}$$^{3}$(where, $K_{IC}$ , $P_{Y}$are the fracture toughness of materials and the applied pressure by indenting, respectively). And the size of transiton radii were experimentally obtained with the similar values to the analytical results.lts..
