  • Going to the studies on parasite control carried out in the past. Infection rate among the rural population is contineously decreasing, however, it is still high in Korea. The most important reason for this high infectious rate is the use of manure as fertilizer. This study was aimed at finding the relationship between the infection rate and manure through analizing 83 samples of soil collected from Sa Am-Ri, Kangwon-do in June and July, 1983. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. 60 cases out of the total sample were carry in at least one or more parasitic eggs, thus revealing 72.3% of positive rate. 2. A total number of 131 parasitic eggs were detected from total sample with an average of 1.6 eggs per 10 g of soil. 3. Asearid eggs more frequently appeared than other parasitic eggs occupying 68.7% or 1.2 eggs in average per 10g of soil. 4. There was revealed positive relationship between infectious rate and frequency of use of manure. (P > 0.05). 5. Infectious rate and average number of parasitic eggs detected were less in the fertilizer mixed with manure and ash than in the soil where only manure was used. (P > 0.05).

  • This study was conducted to investigate the hatchability and infertility of the ostrich eggs. Seven batches of ostrich eggs were imported from Australia into Korea in winter season under quarantine restrictions. Single stage incubation was carried out and the eggs were weighed before incubation. The weight of imported ostrich eggs was varied from 1,074 to over 1,650g and the average egg weights for batches were similar. The hatchability of all eggs batch was reached between 11 and 31%. The infertility of seven batches was varied from 36 to 63%. The first batch of eggs showed relatively low infertility(39%) and high hatchability (31%). On the contrary, the last batch of eggs had low Infertility(36%), and it had the lowest hatchability(11%). The result of this study suggests that hatchability of ostrich eggs imported in late laying season is significantly low because the number of infertile eggs is increased.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of heating hatching eggs on the number of day-old chicks, egg temperature and egg weight during extended storage, and to provide basic information for improving hatchability to livestock producers. Eggs (Hy-line) were subjected to the following treatments: "control": eggs were maintained in an incubator after storage for 8 days; "T1": eggs were preheated for 8 hours at $23.9^{\circ}C$ after storage for 8 days in a hatchery; "T2": eggs were initially heated for 8 hours at $37.8^{\circ}C$ in an incubator and then preheated for 8 hours at $23.9^{\circ}C$ in a hatchery after storage for 8 days. The results were as follows: First, at the end of the experiment, the total number of day-old chicks was higher in T1, followed by T2 and then the control. This indicated that chick hatchability may be improved when eggs are preheated. Second, compared with the control, the number of day-old female chicks was expected to be higher in treatments with pre-heating; however, the results indicated the opposite effect. Third, as storage time lengthened, the factor that influenced preheating (the main effect and interactions) was not egg weight but egg temperature measured in the upper, middle and bottom parts of incubator. The temperatures recorded in all treatments ranged from 37.97 to $38.40^{\circ}C$ in the upper parts of incubator, 37.80 to $38.26^{\circ}C$ in the middle parts of incubator, and 37.94 to $38.59^{\circ}C$ in the bottom parts of incubator over storage. In conclusion, preheating was very effective in improving hatchability, and egg temperature was the main factor affecting preheating and hatchability.

  • This experiment was carried out to improve a simple and effective procedure of egg transfer which is considered to be the most useful technique for the improvementand proliferation of domestic animals. Several experiment procedures such as superovulation, surgical recovery of ovulated egg, in vitro capacitation of ejaculated spermatozoa, in vitro fertilization and culture of embryo were conducted. The results obtained in this experiment were summarized as follows: 1. In rabbits treated with PMS in combination with estradiol and HCG, 10 to 43 eggs were obtained in one rabbit and the average ovulation number of 20 rabbits was 21 eggs. 2. Six to 24 eggs (average 13 eggs) were recovered from the removed oviducts by the methods of flushing technique and the average recovery rate of 20 rabbits was 61.9 percent. 3. Most rabbit spermatozoa ejaculated by artificial vagina were capacitated in vitro by the culture of the spermatozoa with PBI medium at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours after removal of seminal plasma. 4. Normal fetilization following in vitro fetilization was observed in 88 (42.7%) of 206 eggs. 5. The number of eggs developed to 2-, 4-, and 8-cell stage following in vitro culture with PBI medium at 37$^{\circ}C$ was 26 (70.3%), 20 (54.1%) and 17 (45.9%) of 37 eggs used for in vitro culture.

  • We investigated the oviposition characteristics of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis, focusing on zone breeding throughout the year in terms of the development and utilization of insect resources. To select Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis individuals laying a large number of eggs, the number of eggs laid for each individual was measured for each individual after emergence as adults from larvae grown at room temperature in five farmhouses. The five study zone included Gongju (Tancheon), Gyeonggi (Himsen), Chungnam (Gyeryong), Taean (Wonbuk), and Siheung (Baekse). The average oviposition tendency during a 12-week period obtained from the five regions was somewhat different; however, there was no remarkable difference in overall tendency. The maximum oviposition in Protaetia brevitarsisseulensis in the five regions occurred between 6 and 7 weeks. Compared toother regions, the average cumulative number of eggs laid during the 12-week period was higher (40%-60%) in Gongju (Tancheon) and Gyeonggi (Himsen). These results indicate that in two regions, zone breeding is selected as a system for increasing the demand for insects.

  • This study investigated the species composition and abundance of floating fish eggs to determine the timing and location of spawning of fish inhabiting the coastal waters of Sagye, Jejudo Island. Eggs were collected with a Bongo net bimonthly from May 2009 to February 2010. Identifications were based on nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Eggs were determined to belong to 43 distinct taxa, 35 of which were identified to the species level. The assemblage spanned eight orders, 23 families, and 32 genera. The number of taxa collected varied from month to month, with 14 taxa (12 species) found in June 2009, 11 taxa (10 species) in October 2009, 10 taxa (nine species) each in August 2009 and February 2010, eight taxa (six species) in April 2009, and five taxa (four species) in December 2009. Five abundant species (Branchiostegus japonicus, Engraulis japonicus, Pseudolabrus sieboldi, Goniistius zonatus, and Halichoeres tenuispinis) together represented 52.8% of the total number of eggs collected during the study.

  • Mass production of resting egg of the rotifer, Brachionus plicatilis was carried out in 1 $m^3$ tank for L-type rotifer and in 1 $m^3$ and 4 $m^3$ tank for S-type rotifer. L-type rotifer was fed on concentrated Chlorella + baker's yeast and only baker's yeast for 15 days. S-type rotifer was fed on concentrated Chlorella in 1 $m^3$ tank for 7 days and frozen Chlorella + baker's yeast in 4 $m^3$ for $6\~8$ days. Total number of resting egg and number of resting egg from $10^8$ rotifers and 1 g dry weight diet for L-type rotifer fed on Chlorella + baker's yeast were $54.5{\times}10^6$ eggs, $30.5{\times}10^6$ eggs and $100{\times}10^3$ eggs, respectively. These were higher than those of rotifer fed on baker's yeast only. Total number of resting egg and number of resting egg from $10^8$ rotifers and 1 g dry weight diet for S-type rotifer fed on concentrated Chlorella in 1 $m^3$ tank were $50\~104{\times}10^6$ eggs, $47\~82{\times}10^6$ eggs and $136\~260{\times}10^3$ eggs, respectively. In 4 $m^3$ tank with frozen Chlorella + baker's yeast, these were $149\~567{\times}10^6$ eggs, $36\~123{\times}10^6$ eggs and $131\~338{\times}10^3$ eggs, respectively. This result suggests that S-type rotifer are better than L-type rotifer for the mass production of resting egg of the Korean rotifer.

  • Ecology of Crangon affinis was studied in the Nakdong River Estuary fron June 1988 to May 1989. The growth rate of female was similar to that of male. Size differences, however, were apparent between female and male. Sex ratio varies with season. The major spawning season was from June 1988 to May 1989 except for November 1988. The number of eggs of the largest ovigerous female (35.55mm TL) was over 4,000, while that of the smallest ovigerous female (15.05mm TL) more than 120. The mean number of eggs was 1778. The size of winter eggs is larger than that of the summer eggs. The mean percentage of egg loss from brooding to hatching was $29.06\%$. The rate of egg loss decreases with increasing age. Major component of food organisms includes mysids and polycheates.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the vriabibities of the pupal weight and the number of eggs in the ovary of the fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury. collected from the seven different host plants in the field. The correlation between the pupal weight and the number of eggs in the ovary was studied in connection with the species of the host plants. The results obtained were as follows. I) The pupal eight was varied with the species of the host plants and sexes. The order of average female pupal weight was Populus euramericanal Guinier(206.6 mg). Juglans mandshurica Max. (J97.8 mg). Platanus orientalis L. (182.4 mg). Acer neugndo L. (172.2 mg). Taxodium distichum Rich. (172.1 mg). Salix babylonica L. (128.8 mg) and Prunus serrulata var. spontanea (Max). Wilson (103.4 mg). and of the average male pupal weight. T. distichum (125.2 mg). P. orientalis (123.5mg). J. mandshurica (114.4 mg). A. negundo (109.5 mg). Peuramericana (106.3mg). S. babylonica (94.3 mg). and P. serrulata var. spontanea(74.6 mg). The weight of female pupae was greater than that of male pupae in all case. 2) The unmber of eggs in the ovary was also vaied with the species of the host plants. The order of the average number of eggs in the ovary was P. euramericana(1331.1). J. mandshurica(I239.9). T. disichum (1237.0). A. negundo (1186.9). P. orientalis (1145.5), S. babylonica (800.0) and P. serrulata var. spontanea (641.5). 3) The number of eggs in the ovary for all the host plants tested was highly correlated with the pupal weight.
