The objective of the present study was to evaluate effects of probiotic mixture (PM) including Bacillus subtillus, Streptomyces galilaeus and Sphingobacteriaceae on egg production, egg quality, and eliminating odor in laying hens. A total of 240 Hy-Line Brown laying hens (50 wks of age) were divided into four treatment groups (60 replicates of birds, each) in completely randomized design. Groups were assigned to four experimental diets: CON (a basal diet of no PM additive as control), basal diet supplemented with either CP3 (0.3% commercial probiotics), PM3 (0.3% PM), or PM5 (0.5% PM 0.5). Data of egg production and egg quality were obtained during 6 weeks of experimental period. Egg production, Haugh unit, shell thickness, breaking strength, yolk color, and albumin high were significantly increased in CP3 and PM3 compared to those in CON and CP3. Ammonia levels and numbers of E. coli, total aerobic bacteria, Coliform, and Salmonella in feces were significantly increased in order of CON>CP3>PM3>PM5. The present study indicates that addition of 0.3% probiotic mixture including B. subtillus, S. galilaeus and Sphingobacteriaceae to diets may improve egg production, egg quality, and eliminate fecal ammonia of laying hens.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of varying levels of hydrolyzed yeast on egg production and egg quality in aged laying randomly allotted to three dietary treatments such that egg production was similar in each treatment (6 replicates of 10 birds each). The layers were fed diets containing 0, 0.1, or 0.2% hydrolyzed yeast for eight weeks. No significant difference was observed in egg production during the first half of the experiment. Egg production and daily egg mass in groups fed diets containing hydrolyzed yeast were significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of the control groups during the second half of the experiment. Egg weight was not affected by the dietary treatment. Eggshell strength and thickness in groups fed diets containing hydrolyzed yeast were significantly higher than those of the control groups during the overall experimental period (P<0.05). Although no significant differences were observed in the Haugh units, yolk color in the group fed diets containing 0.1% hydrolyzed yeast was significantly higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). The mammillary layer thickness increased in a linear manner and significantly following treatment with dietary hydrolyzed yeast (P<0.05). Antibody titer against avian influenza virus in the group fed diets containing 0.2% hydrolyzed yeast was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that in the control group. In conclusion, dietary hydrolyzed yeast improved egg production and eggshell quality of laying hens in the late stages of production.

From November 1996 to April 1997, the rockfish, Sebastiscus marmoratus (Cuvier et Valenciennes) was reared in laboratory, and observed eggs development and morphology of larvae. The eggs of this species are demersal and adhesive, and their diameter were varied within 0.76 to 0.82 mm. The color of yolk is light yellow in early developmental stage, and then turned to orange before hatching out. The yolk contained numerous tiny oil globules. Hatching began about 33 hours and 30 minutes after insemination at $10.0{\sim}14.5^{\circ}C$ of waters. The newly hatched larvae were elongated in shape and 1.62~1.68 mm in total length (TL) with 7~8+16=23~24 myomeres. The larvae absorbed yolk material and oil globule completely in 14 days after hatching and became postlarvae. The spawning season of adult rockfish may be supposed to be from February to March in the southern sea of Korea.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of coastal mud-flat bacteria origin protease supplementation on laying performance, nutrient digestibility and total protein concentration of serum in laying hens. A total of 252 laying hens were randomly allocated into three treatments with seven replications for eight weeks. Dietary treatments included 1) CON (basal diet), 2) PRO1 (basal diet + 0.05% protease) and 3) PRO2 (basal diet + 0.1% protease). During the entire experimental period, hen-day egg production was not affected by treatments (P>0.05). Difference of yolk height was increased in PRO1 treatment compared with CON treatment (P<0.05). Difference of egg weight was increased in PRO2 treatment compared with CON and PRO1 treatments (P<0.05). Shell quality, yolk color unit, haugh unit and egg yolk index were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). DM digestibility was improved in CON and PRO2 treatments compared with PRO1 treatment (P<0.05). N digestibility was improved in PRO2 treatment compared with CON treatment (P<0.05). Total protein concentration in serum were not affected by treatments (P>0.05). In conclusion, mud flat bacteria origin protease was effective for improving egg weight, yolk height and nutrient digestibility in laying hens.

This study investigated the effects of three kinds of water extract mixtures each with different ratios of A. capillaris, C. sinensis, S. chinensis, and V. coloratum on laying performance, egg quality, blood characteristics, and egg storage stability in laying hens. One hundred and sixty 35-wk-old laying hens (Hy-line brown) were divided into four groups of 10 birds each replicated times four. The treatments involved a basal diet (C, control) or diets containing three kinds of water extract mixtures at 200 ppm (T1, water extract mixture A; T2, water extract mixture B; T3, water extract mixture C). The egg production rate, egg mass, and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved in all treatments compared to those of control (p<0.05). Haugh unit and egg yolk color in all treated groups were significantly improved in comparison with control (p<0.05), but no significant differences were observed for egg shell quality. The content of total cholesterol in blood serum was significantly decreased in all treatments compared to that of control (p<0.05). The blood biochemical parameters of liver and kidney damage were significantly decreased in all treatments compared to those of control (p<0.05). Total antioxidant activity in the blood serum of all treated groups was increased as well. The Haugh unit and malondialdehyde content in the egg yolk during storage were significantly decreased in all treated groups compared to control (p<0.05). Consequently, the dietary supplementation of water extract mixtures of A. capillaris, C. sinensis, S. chinensis, and V. coloratum improved laying performance and egg quality but decreased egg quality deterioration with increased storage. These results suggest that medicinal plant extracts could be used as a feed additive in feed for laying hens.
The effects of delta-aminolevulinic acid (DALA) or chito-oligosaccharide (COS) in layer diets on production performance, egg quality and hematological characteristics were investigated in this 8-week trial. Two hundred and seventy 27-week-old (Hy-Line brown) layers were randomly assigned to 5 treatments with 9 replications per treatment. Dietary treatments were i) Control (basal diet); ii) DALA1 (basal diet+DALA 2 mg/kg); iii) DALA2 (basal diet+DALA 4 mg/kg); iv) COS1 (basal diet+COS 100 mg/kg) and v) COS2 (basal diet+COS 200 mg/kg). In this study, no significant difference was observed in feed intake and egg shell quality (eggshell breaking strength and egg shell thickness) among treatments. The inclusion of DALA increased egg production during the first 4 weeks. Egg weight was increased in both DALA (quadratic, p<0.05) and COS (linear, p<0.05) treatments compared with the control treatment. Laying hens fed the DALA treatment had an increased yolk color unit (quadratic, p<0.05) and haugh unit (linear, p<0.05) compared with the control group. Similarly, these characteristics were also affected by COS treatments, with both values being linearly increased (p<0.05) in COS treatments compared with the control treatment. Additionally, birds fed DALA treatments significantly increased (quadratic, p<0.05) the number of RBC, WBC and lymphocytes compared with the control treatment. Dietary DALA supplementation linearly increased (p<0.05) the serum iron concentration at the end of the 8th week. The inclusion of COS increased (linear, p<0.05) the concentration of RBC, WBC and lymphocytes compared with the control treatment. In conclusion, dietary DALA at the lower dosage (2 mg/kg) could exert better effects in laying hens than higher dosage (4 mg/kg). Birds fed DALA supplemented diet had an increased iron availability, egg weight, eggshell quality and immunity. Moreover, the inclusion of COS (200 mg/kg) can increase egg weight, eggshell quality and immunity in laying hens. Therefore, both the utilization of COS and DALA could be considered as a new strategy for optimizing egg quality and health condition of laying hens.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of mineral and vitamin-enhanced supplementation on egg production, egg quality and concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in serum of spent laying hens. A total of 240 (72-wk-old) Hyline brown commercial hens were used in the current trial for 4 weeks. Dietary treatments included 1) CON (basal diet), 2) ESS1 (basal diet + Egg shell strengthen 0.1%), 3) ESS2 (basal diet + Egg shell strengthen 0.2%) and 4) FESS (basal diet + Fe egg shell strengthen 0.2%). During the overall period, egg production was increased in CON and ESS2 treatments compared with ESS1 treatment (P<0.05). Egg shell breaking strength and final egg shell thickness were significantly higher in ESS2 treatment than CON and FESS treatments (P<0.05). Egg yolk color index was significantly lower in ESS1 treatment than other treatments (P<0.05). Moreover, Haugh unit was significantly lower in ESS1 and FESS treatments than CON treatment (P<0.05). Mineral- and vitaminenhanced supplementation did not affect either egg shell color or calcium and phosphorus concentration in serum. In conclusion, mineral- and vitamin- enhanced supplementations of laying hens diet are helpful in improving egg shell breaking strength and thickness by supplementation of Egg shell strengthener 0.2%.
The effects of various levels of dietary dried whole crop of kale (0.1%, 0.3%), dried peel of kale (0.3%), dried whole crop of Angelica keiskei (Koidz) (0.1%, 0.3%), and peel of Angelica keiskei (Koidz) (0.3%) in egg-laying performance were studied with 560 ISA brown layers for a period of 12 weeks. No significant differences were recognized between the treatments and control in egg production, feed intake and egg mass. The quality of egg and eggshell were not different among treatments but egg yolk color was improved in the both of whole crop and peel of kale and Angelica keiskei (Koidz). Vitamin and polyunsaturated fatty acid concentration of eggs increased in treatments compared to control but were not significantly different from controls. In conclusion, dried peel of kale and Angelica keiskei (Koidz) supplementation in laying hens diet improved egg yolk color, and improve vitamin concentration of chicken eggs.
The color change of lead-containing pigments is one of the most serious diseases in watercolor, oil paintings and wall paintings. These pigments have a tendency to darken or brighten. It was proved that oxidation of lead containing pigments in the formation of brown-colored lead dioxide is a photochemical reaction under high humidity conditions. Therefore, we carried out some analogic experiments on the color change of three typical lead containing pigments ; $Pb_3O_4$, Pbo and $PbCo_3{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$ at the conditions of illuminations under the high humidity ($2PbCo_3{\cdot}Pb(OH)_2$ R. H.). The reason for the chemical reactions are discussed and the results of these experiments are shown in some spectrograms, micrographs and X-ray micro-diffraction patterns. Important conclusions were drawn in our research. Due to the formation of brown $PbO_2$, red lead $(Pb_3O_4)$ and massicot (PbO) turned brown or dark when they were illuminated light under high humidity. We noticed that the brightening of red lead occurred d to admixture with chalk or lead white in egg yolk or linseed oil medium on exposure to light. Lead white used in oil paintings turned yellowish on dark.
The ultrastructural changes in germ cells during oogenesis of the melania snail, Semisulcospira libertina libertina have been investigated by light and electron microscopy. The ovary is located on the surface of the hepatopancreas in the spiral posterior region. The ovary exhibited greenish color in the gonadal mature season. The ovary was composed of a number of oogenic follicles. Oogenesis was divided into five stages with histological features: (1) oogonia, (2) previtellogenic, (3) initial vitellogenic, (4) active vitellogenic, and (5) mature stages. Oogonia were oval in shape, $4-6\;{\mu}m$ in diameter, and had a large nucleus. Previtellogenic oocytes were about $20\;{\mu}m$ in diameter and the cytoplasm reacted with hematoxylin in H-E satin. Initial vitellogenic stage, oocytes were $60-80\;{\mu}m$ in diameter, and small yolk granules of low electron density are scattered in the cytoplasm. Oocytes in the initial vitellogenic stage were connected with ovarian follicle by egg stalk. Active vitellogenic oocyte were $100-120\;{\mu}m$ in diameter. Electron density, size and quantity of yolk granules that are distributed in the cytoplasm have increased from the previous stage. Result of TEM observations, the oocyte contains well-developed Golgi complex, endoplasmic reticula and tubular mitochondria in the cytoplasm. Cytoplasm of mature oocyte was filled with proteinaceous yolk globules of high electron density. In this stage, the length of microvilli in the egg envelope was approximately $1.1\;{\mu}m$.
