Reproduction characteristics of hagfish Eptatretus burgeri in the South Sea of Korea (한국 남해에 출현하는 먹장어 Eptatretus burgeri의 재생산 특성)

  • The reproduction characteristics of hagfish Eptatretus burgeri were examined using individuals caught in the South Sea of Korea. The spawning season and size at minimum sexual maturity of this species were characterized based on a gonad-somatic index (GSI) and monthly variation egg size (long axis). From monthly variation of GSI, the spawning season was estimated to be from August to September. Developing eggs larger than 10 mm were found in March, and the largest egg size was found in July. The first spawning length was 34.2 cm TL. Batch fecundity ranged from 13 to 117 eggs for hagfish sized from 34.2 cm TL to 77.0 cm TL, respectively, and increased linearly with total length.

  • Histological study on egg envelope and oogenesis of Kichulchoia multifasciata (Pisces, Cobitidae) was carried out by light microscopes and scanning electron microscopes. Various developmental cells appeared in ovary of the specimen catched during November 2010. The cytoplasm of oogonia was acidic and many nucleoli were located at the inner side of nucleus membrane. The size of the oogonia was $103.9{\pm}24.7$ ${\mu}m$ with nucleus size $42.9{\pm}6.9$ (31.1~50.3) ${\mu}m$. Primary oocyte having $277.5{\pm}60.5$ (216.7~354.9) ${\mu}m$ in diameter began to accumulate yolk vesicles. As the developmental stages proceed, secondary oocyte grows larger to $617.6{\pm}85.1$ (503.4~723.6) ${\mu}m$, and eosinophilic yolk granules yolk granules appeared between the yolk vesicles occupying most cytoplasm, and there are some yolk mass formed already. There are some yolk mass formed already. Envelope of fertilized egg investigated by a scanning electron microscope had plenty of microvilli (2~3 ${\mu}m$ in length) over the entire egg surface and a micropyle. Especially, the microvilli surrounding the micropyle were longer than those of egg surface with $5.26{\pm}1.22$ ${\mu}m$.

Clutch, Egg Size and Breeding Cycle of The Pacific Reef Heron(Egretta sacra) on Jeju Island, Korea (제주도에서 번식하는 흑로 Egretta sacra의 산란수, 알크기, 번식주기)

  • This study was based on the breeding process of the Pacific Reef Herons (Egretta sacra) bred in Aewol-eup, Jeju Island, for two years from February 2004 to June 2005. The clutch size of the pacific reef herons was $3.24{\pm}0.75$(N=17, range: $2{\sim}4$), and the egg-laying was at dawn or night intervals of one to three days. The major diameter of the egg(N=39) was $46.73{\pm}1.91mm$, the minor diameter thereof $34.06{\pm}0.83mm$, the weight thereof $27.67{\pm}3.12g$, and the thickness of the egg shell thereof $0.26{\pm}0.03mm$. In relation to the breeding cycles of the Pacific Reef Herons, the nesting or nest repairing was made from February to the end of April each year, the egg laying from the beginning of March to the beginning of May, the hatching from the beginning of April to the middle of May, and the nest departure from the middle of May to the end of July. The supplement brood was started immediately from May to June when the first brood had failed. The incubation period was $28.17{\pm}4.12(N=6)$ days, and hatched asynchronously. The fledgling period was $40.00{\pm}6.84(N=5)$ days, and bill, wing, tarsus and weight developments of early hatched nestlings were the fastest among the same brood. Compared with other egret species, the egg laying period of the Pacific Reef Heron was faster than that of the Black-crowned Night Heron, Little Egret and Great Egret, but later than that of Grey Heron, in Korea.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of shperical surface of eggs tray and eggshell on breaking strength of eggs for the development of a new egg tray design to prevent eggshell breakage. The results obtained were as follows: 1. According to the results obtained from investigation on the types of 22 egg trays collected from 9 countries(USA, Italy, France, Thailand, Japan, Netherland, Russia, Korea and Swiss), all egg trays except those from Korea were different in their types. 2. According to the determination of breaking strength for 4 pilot egg trays, type B and D were high in breaking strength. Trays B and D which would fit with the spherical surface of egg so that they could increase breaking strength were most recommendable. Breaking strength was not increased even though egg tray was strong. Thickness of eggshell of experimental eggs used in this experiment have no significance (P>0.05). 3. When eggs are packed and transported in egg tray, the breaking strength will depend on how much spherical surface of egg are covered by the spherical surface of the egg tray. Therefore, the inner spherical surface of egg tray must fit to the outer spherical surface of eggs when the egg tray is manufactured. 4. At present, there is only one type of egg tray being used in Korea despite the various egg sizes. In order to minimize the eggshell breakage, however, proper sizes or types of egg trays should be developed for each different categories of the egg size.

Egg Development and Larvae and Juveniles Morphology of Carp, Cyprinus carpio in Korean

  • This study was conducted to observe egg and larvae morphological development of carp to obtain basic data for resource conservation and taxonomic research. Brood carp used in the research (total length 67.3-75.5 cm, average $71.0{\pm}3.45cm$) were bred in a circular rearing aquarium ($600{\times}300{\times}100cm$) using a running water system from January to July, 2015. Breeding water temperature was maintained at $23.0-25.0^{\circ}C$(average $24.0^{\circ}C$). Fertilized carp eggs were translucent and globular, and their size was 1.75-1.89 mm (average $1.82{\pm}0.06mm$). Blastoderms formed 10 min after fertilization and reached the two-cell stage 30 min after fertilization. Then, the embryo turned dark and exhibited melanophores, and blood started flowing from the heart across the egg yolk at 42 hrs and 50 min after fertilization. Hatching began 70 hrs and 26 min after fertilization larvae emerged through the egg membrane, starting from the head. The length of prelarvae immediately after hatching was 5.23-5.38 mm (average $5.31{\pm}0.11mm$) the mouth and anus were closed, and the pectoral fin was formed. Postlarvae at 18 days after hatching had a total length of 11.9-13.9 mm (average $12.9{\pm}1.40mm$), separate anal fin and back membranes, and fin ray. Juveniles fish at 35 days after hatching had a total length of 29.9-30.2 mm (average $30.1{\pm}0.13mm$), with the body covered with scales, and the same number of fin rays, color, and shape as their broodstork.

Characteristics of Multi-embryo Egg Capsule and Larvae of Mottled Skate Raja pulchra from Korea (한국산 참홍어(Raja pulchra)의 다배성 난각 특징과 자어의 형태)

  • An investigation was carried out to obtain basic information needed to develop methods for artificial propagation and conservation of the mottled skate Raja pulchra, an important food resource in western Korea that has declined from overfishing. In this paper we provide evidence of multiple spawning and describe properties of the ovary, and morphology of the egg capsule and the fully-formed offspring. The vitellogenic follicles in the ovary was $179.8{\pm}57.1$ (54~247) and can be classified into five size groups, which the last group of ova are considered as the moving to the capsule gland where fertilization and encapsulation of ova take place. The morphology of the egg capsule of R. pulchra is unique among the species of the family Rajidae and showed multi-embryo characteristics, having two to six yolks in each capsule. The adaptive morphological changes of larvae developing inside the egg capsule are described based on specimens extracted from the capsule.

Egg Development and Juvenile Growth of the Pacific Cod Gadus macrocephalus (Korean East Sea Population) (한국 동해계군 대구 (Gadus macrocephalus)의 난발생과 자치어의 성장)

  • Egg development and juvenile growth of the Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus (Korean East Sea Population) were studied to increase fry production using mass cultivation. The eggs were rectangular and adhesive sinking type. The egg size and fertilization rate were 1.01-1.09 mm and 72.4%, respectively. The cumulative times for egg hatching at 3, 6, 9, and $12\;^{\circ}C$ were 600, 360, 240, and 192 hrs, respectively. The hatching rates at 3, 6, 9, and $12\;^{\circ}C$ were 60.2, 68.9, 62.5, and 40.6%, respectively. After 11, 45, and 90 days, the larvae grew to a total length of 5.46-5.99, 9.42-10.06, and 23.0-32.0 mm, respectively. At 100 days from hatching, they grew to an average of 30 mm with a 7.1 % survival rate. By 312 days, juveniles with a total length of 3.6 cm grew to a total length of 14.7-20.1 cm and a body weight of 38.4-73.9 g. The specific growth rates of total length and body weight of the juveniles were 0.50% and 1.12%, respectively.

Differences in Egg Quality and Larval Development among Four Populations of Sea Squirt Halocynthia roretzi Adults (난질과 유생발생을 이용한 4개 멍게(Halocynthia roretzi) 어미계군 특성 비교)

  • To compare four populations of sea squirt Halocynthia roretzi adults, their egg quality and larval development were investigated in the hatchery. The populations were: south sea wild (SSW), south sea cultured (SSC), east sea wild (ESW) and Iwate Japan cultured (IJC). Egg quality and larval development were compared using 13 factors (fertilization rate and diameter, proximate composition, amino acid and fatty acid contents of eggs, hatching rate and various sizes of tadpole larvae) which were obtained from each population. Fertilized egg diameter, hatching rate and size of tadpole larvae were significantly different among the four populations (P<0.05). Eggs were produced with higher crude protein ($5.20{\pm}0.00%$ SSW, $4.71{\pm}0.01%$ ESW, $4.66{\pm}0.01%$ SSC and $3.96{\pm}0.01%$ IJC) and lipid ($1.22{\pm}0.01%$ ESW, $1.01{\pm}0.00%$ SSW, $0.77{\pm}0.01%$ SSC and $0.69{\pm}0.00%$ IJC,) contents from domestic wild populations than from Japanese or cultured populations. Also amino acid and fatty acid contents were different. The extent of similarity between domestic and Japanese populations (30.5% IJC:SSW, 34.3% IJC:SSC and 40.7% IJC:ESW) was relatively low but was very high between SSW and SSC (73.9%). These results may have been due to differences in the abundance of food types and environmental conditions in the four localities and consequent differences in the diets of the sea squirts.

Gametogenesis, Mating Behaviour and Spawning of Octopus ocellatus (Cephalopoda: Octopodidae) in Western Korea

  • Gametogenesis, mating behaviour and spawning of Octopus ocellatus were investigated by histological study. This species is dioecious, and showed a protandry phenomenon. Ooogenesis (in females) and spermatogenesis (in males) can be classified into 3 stages, respectively. O. ocellatus copulates in one of two ways: a male may leap upon a female, mounting her mantle, or a male may sit near the female and extend the hectocotylized third right arm toward her. Spawning occurred between April and June in females, and between March and May in males of O. ocellatus. The spawning period was once a year and the peak took place between May and June. A number of flatened follicle cells, which were attached to an oocyte, were involved in vitellogenesis in the cytoplasm of the vitellogenic oocyte (maturing oocyte), and formation of chorion membrane (secondary egg membrane) of the ovarian eggs. Fecundity per female closely related to GSI was 294-660 eggs (average, 429 eggs). The diameters of the ovarian eggs surrounded by chorion membrane were approximately in the range of 10.10-2.50 mm. Each ovarian egg laid by a female was connected to an egg string. Each egg string was 1-5.5 cm (average 3.6 cm). The total number of eggs laid by a female of this species ranged 218-314, the egg sizes were independent to the size of female adult. this species has a life mode showing some special reproductive characteristics of an annual semelparity as shown in Octopodidae species because we have never seen a female spawning a second time.

Changes in Physical Properties of Salted Egg Yolks as Affected by Salt Content During Frozen Storage and Their Effects (가염량이 다른 난황의 냉동저장 중 물성 및 마요네즈 제조적성 변화)

  • The changes in Physical properties of egg yolk(refractive index 43) as affected by salt content(7%, 10%, 13%) during frozen storage and their effects on functionalities in mayonnaise preparation were investigated. As the frozen storage period of salted egg yolk increased, viscosity was increased, and further increased with higher salt content, and emulsification capacity was gradually decreased. In case of egg folk with 7% salt, emulsification capacity was considerably decreased during the storage at $-25^{\circ}C$ over 4 months. Microbes of salted egg yolk were decreased with frozen storage, but the difference was not due to salt content. Mayonnaise. Prepared with frozen egg yolks stored for $2{\sim}3$ months, maintained a minimum viscosity. Viscosity became higher in the mayonnaise which prepared with egg yolk of higher salt content stored at $-25^{\circ}C$. Oil particle size of mayonnaise with the yolk contained more salt was smaller, when the yolk was stored at $-25^{\circ}C$ than $-15^{\circ}C$. Noticible microbes were detected in the mayonnaise right after preparation, but not detected in the mayonnaise after 1 month storage.
