A Study on Slot Grinding for Lead Pin Punching Die (리드 핀 제조용 펀치 금형의 홈 가공에 관한 연구)

  • One of the recent changes in machining technology is rapid application of micro- and high precision grinding processes. A fine groove generation is necessary for the fabrication of optics, electronics and semiconductor parts. Slot grinding is very efficient for the generation of micro ordered groove with hard and brittle materials. In the process of slot grinding, chipping at the sharp edges and microcracks of the ground grooves are inevitable defects. Chipping should be reduced for the improvement of surface integrity. Mechanical contact with diamond grits causes microcracks at the grooves. This damage resides subsurface, and can be the cause of failure of the punch die. This paper deals with chipping generation at the sharp edges, surface integrity of side groove and fracture strength is related to the microcracks in the slot grinding.

Design Characteristics of Non-Contact Type Seal for High Speed Spindle (고속주축용 비접촉 시일의 형상설계 연구)

  • Sealing of lubricant-air mixture in the high performance machining center is one of most the important characteristics to carry out enhanced lubrication. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry. Velocity, pressure, turbulence intensity of profile is calculated to find more efficient geometry and variables. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle. The working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. It is more reasonable to simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication. Turbulence and compressible flow model are used to evaluate a flow characteristic. This paper considers a design effect of sealing capability of non- contact type seals for high speed spindle and analyzes leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage 7 on the same sealing area.

  • The research on the process capability is the basis for quality design, operation standard and so on. In this study, histogram of the measured value for the cutting process and calculation of the capability factor Cp are established, resulting in the classification of 4 grades, and necessary measures for them are presented. The advancement of productivity is the most significant result of this study. The processing time per piece for those stabilized processes having the capability factor 1.33 and above is lessened, and the advancement in quantity capability is made possible permitting dispersion of standard up to the tolerance limit. The exact knowledge of process capability is most important for the quality design system. For the efficient application of this result of the research, a systematic and positive cooperation by the whole company members is needed.

  • In mobile industry, using a metal frame of devices is rapidly increased for thin and stylish designs. However, fabricating metal is one of the difficult processes because the sophisticated control of equipment is required during the whole machining time. In this study, we present an efficient multivariate monitoring procedure for the metal frame process in mobile device manufacturing. The effectiveness of the proposed procedure is demonstrated by real data from the mobile plant in one of the leading mobile companies in South Korea.

  • Improvement of machine tool accuracy is an essential part of quality control in manufacturing process. Among of all the errors of a particular machine tool, the thermal errors of the spindle have a notably significant effect on machining accuracy and have a direct influence upon both the surface finish and geometric shape of the finished workpiece. Therefore, this paper proposed new measurement method for thermal errors of the spindle in machine tools. The thermal errors are measured by a ball bar system instead of capacitance sensor system. The novel measurement method using ball bar system is more efficient, easier to use than conventional measurement system. And also the ball bar system is possible to measure both geometric errors and thermal errors at the same time.

  • A highly efficient mirror surface grinding technology has been developed for hard and brittle materials various metal materials, by employing the ELID (electrolytic in-process dressing) grinding method using metal bonded grinding wheels. In this research, some typical applications of ELID-grinding for cylindrical grinding are introduced and the mirror grinding characteristics are investigated. Good results are obtained in the grinding of ceramics and tungsten carbide.

Approximation of a compound surface to polyhedral model (복합곡면의 다면체 곡면 근사)

  • Presented in this study is an algorithmic procedure to obtain polyhedral model from a compound surface. The compound surface in this study denotes a collection of trimmed surfaces without topological relations. The procedure consists of two main modules: CAD data interface, and surface conversion to polyhedral model. The interface module gets geometric information from CAD databases, and makes topological information by scanning the geometric information. We are investigating CATIA system as a data source system. In the surface conversion module, a shell(compound surface with topological information) is approximated to a triangular-faceted polyhedral surface model through node sampling and triangulation steps. The obtained polyhedral model should obey the vertex-to-vertex rule and meet tolerance requirements. Since the polyhedral model has a simple data structure and geometry processing for it is very efficient and robust, the polyhedral model can be used in various applications, such as surface rendering in computer graphics, FEM model for engineering analysis, CAPP for surface machining, data generation for SLA, and NC tool path generation.

  • Modem automated manufacturing processes employ automated guided vehicles(AGVs) for material handling, which serve several machining centers(MCs) in a factory. Optimal scheduling of AGVs can significantly help to increase the efficiency of the manufacturing process by minimizing the idle time of MCs waiting for the raw materials. In this paper, we will analyse the requirements for an optimal schedule and then provide a mathematical framework for an efficient schedule of material delivery by an AGV. With this model, the optimal number of MCs to be utilized will also be determined. Finally, the material delivery schedule employing multiple journeys to the MCs by the AGV will be carried out. Through rigorous analysis and simulation experiments, we shall show that such a delivery strategy will optimize the overall performance.

  • This paper describes a cell programming environment that deals with problems associated with programming Flexible Manufacturing Cells(FMCs). The environment consists of the cell programming editor and the automatic generation module. In the cell programming editor, cell programmers can develop cell programs using task level description set which supports task-oriented specifications for manipulation cell activities. This approach to cell programming reduces the amount of details that cell programmers need to consider and allows them to concentrate on the most important aspects of the task at hand. The automatic generation module is used to transform task specifications into executable programs used by cell constituents. This module is based on efficient algorithm and expert systems which can be used for optimal path planning of robot operations and optimal machining parameters of machine tool operations. The development tool in designing the environment is an object-oriented approach which provides a simple to use and intuitive user interface, and allows for an easy development of object models associated with the environment.

Extracting a Regular Triangular Net for Offsetting (옵셋팅을 위한 정규 삼각망 추출)

  • In this paper, we present a method of extracting a regular 2-manifold triangular net from a triangular net including degenerate and self-intersected triangles. This method can be applied to obtaining an offset model without degenerate and self-intersected triangles. Then this offset model can be used to generate CL curves and extract machining features for CAPP The robust and efficient algorithm to detect valid triangles by growing regions from an initial valid triangle is presented. The main advantage of the algorithm is that detection of valid triangles is performed only in valid regions and their adjacent selfintersections, and omitted in the rest regions (invalid regions). This advantage increases robustness of the algorithm. As well as a k-d tree bucketing method is used to detect self-intersections efficiently.
