  • In the HEVC standard, transform coefficient coding that affects the output bitstream directly is a core part of the encoder and it includes coefficient scanning and entropy coding. Recently, JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) advances to HEVC Committee Draft (CD). In this paper, we explain HEVC transform coefficient coding and propose an efficient transform coefficient coding method considering statistics of transform coefficients in the intra frame coder. The proposed method reduces BD-Rate by up to 0.74%, compared to the conventional HEVC transform coefficient coding.

  • Video coding technologies are progressively becoming more efficient and complex. The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) is a new state-of-the art video compression standard that is going to be a standard, as the next generation of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standard. To explore the future video coding technologies beyond the HEVC, numerous efficient methods have been adopted by the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET). Since then, the next generation video coding standard named as VVC and its software model called VVC Test Model (VTM) have emerged. In this paper, several important coding features for motion estimation and motion compensation in the VVC standard is introduced and analyzed in terms of the performance. Improved coding tools introduced for ME and MC in VVC, can achieve much better and good balance between coding efficiency and coding complexity compared with the HEVC.

  • An improved energy-efficient compressed network coding method is proposed for the data communication in the wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In the method, the compressed sensing and network coding are jointly used to improve the energy efficiency, and the two-hop neighbor information is employed to choose the next hop to further reduce the number of the transmissions. Moreover, a new packet format is designed to facilitate the intermediate node selection. To theoretically verify the efficiency of the proposed method, the expressions for the number of the transmissions and receptions are derived. Simulation results show that, the proposed method has higher energy efficiency compared with the available schemes, and it only requires a few packets to reconstruct measurements with reasonable quality.

  • In this paper, we present a combination of trellis coded vector quantization and code-excited linear prediction coding, termed trellis excitation coding, for an efficient 4.8 kbps speech coding system. A training sequence-based algorithm is developed for designing an otimized codebook subject to the TEC structure. Also, we discuss the trellis symbol release rules that avoid excessive encoding delay. Finally, simulation results for the TEC coder are given at bit rate of 4.8 kbps.

  • Screen content refers to images or videos generated by various electronic devices such as computers or mobile phones, whereas natural content refers to images captured by cameras. Screen contents show different statistical characteristics from natural images, so the conventional video codecs which were developed mainly for the coding of natural videos cannot guarantee good coding performances for screen contents. Recently, researches on efficient SCC(Screen Content Coding) are being actively studied, and especially at ongoing JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) meeting for HEVC(High Efficiency Video Coding) standard, SCC issues are being discussed steadily. In this paper, we analyze the performances of high efficient coding tools in HM(HEVC Test Model) on SCC, and present an optimized SCC model based on the analysis results. We also present the characteristics of screen contents and the future research issues as well.

  • In this paper, en efficient broadcast scheme with acknowledged mode is proposed. Specifically, based on stochastic pattern of ACK/NACK across all users and index coding, adaptive coding scheme with XOR operation is used at the transmitter. At each receiver, packets are decoded using layered decoding method with already successfully decoded packets. From numerical results, proposed index coded broadcast scheme is shown to be more efficient than naive broadcast scheme in the sense of average total number of transmitted packets.

  • Under limited transmission conditions, many factors affect the efficiency of video transmission. During the flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), frequent network switching often occurs, and the channel transmission condition changes rapidly, resulting in low-video transmission efficiency. This paper presents an efficient video coding flow for UAVs working in the 5G nonstandalone network and proposes two bit controllers, including time and spatial bit controllers, in the flow. When the environment fluctuates significantly, the time bit controller adjusts the depth of the recursive codec to reduce the error propagation caused by excessive network inference. The spatial bit controller combines the spatial bit mask with the channel quality multiplier to adjust the bit allocation in space to allocate resources better and improve the efficiency of information carrying. In the spatial bit controller, a flexible mini graph is proposed to compute the channel quality multiplier. In this study, two bit controllers with end-to-end codec were combined, thereby constructing an efficient video coding flow. Many experiments have been performed in various environments. Concerning the multi-scale structural similarity index and peak signal-to-noise ratio, the performance of the coding flow is close to that of H.265 in the low bits per pixel area. With an increase in bits per pixel, the saturation bottleneck of the coding flow is at the same level as that of H.264.

  • Recently, Fractal Image Coding has been studied as a way of efficient data compressing scheme. In the beginning, Fractal Image Coding has been studied for the data compressing in black & white images and linear images. A. E. Jacquin suggested LIFS which expends to Fractal Image Coding for a gray scale image. Currently, YTKT's LIFS scheme which is using Gram-Schmidt is so efficient that enough to compete with the JPEG which is the national standards. This paper investigates the way of greatly reduced calculation for the orthogonalization algorithm.

  • In this paper, a new contour coding algorithm is investigated for use in region based image coding. Generally the contour data may be encoded by its chain codes or chain difference codes. But the data compression efficiency is low because of heavy burden for initial absolute coordinates of each chain. To alleviate this problem, the depth first search in graph traversal algorithm, is applied to the chain difference coding method. The proposed coding scheme is shown to be very efficient for contour images obtained by split-merge segmentation. Finally, we can reuce data about 60% in comparison with modified chain difference coding.

  • In this paper, the efficient motion estimation and compensation method for 3 dimensional wavelet transform is proposed. Recently, since the compression performance and scalable functionality are provided by wavelet transform, many researches have been carried out for applying to the video compression. For the temporal filtering, motion estimation and compensation techniques are used, but the unconnected pixels, which are produced by motion compensation result into the degradation of coding performance and quality of the picture. For the efficient motion compensated temporal filtering by reducing the number of these unconnected pixels, we propose the variable block size motion estimation and compensation method. Also we propose a method that determines the block size using rate-distortion optimization technique according to the local characteristics of the frame. The simulation results show the improved performances than the MPEG-4 scalable coding methods and the 3 dimensional wavelet coding methods using fixed block size motion estimation and compensation.
