  • In the course of cement hydration it was found that the addition of polyvinyl alcohol(contracted as PVA. here after) only in the cement paste could more influence on the set-retardation the depression of heat evol-ution rate than that of montmorillonit only or PVA-montmorillonie intercalation complex (PMIC) due to the effective adsorption of PVA on cement particles. The improved mechanical strength by addition of montmorillonite and PMIC was observed remarkably up to 0.05wt% due to the decrease of macro-pores caused by lowed viscosity or the acceleration of hydration reaction.

  • The polymer nanocomposites are attracting considerable attention on account of the characteristic properties of nanoparticles have extremely large surface area per a unit mass. Recentry, mica-type silicates like montmorillonite have received a good deal of attention as effective nano-reinforcemen(1), but actually some critical problems such as the difficulties of exfoliation and surface modification, the weak heat-resistance of modifier, and inferior processability due to the increase in melt viscosity have restricted the mass production and various applications of the nanocoposite. • To model the behavior of expanded beds with aqueous feed streams containing different amounts of glycerol, we previously developed a modified Stokes expression that correlates the terminal settling velocity of a particle of a solution with the properties of the particle (particle diameter and density) and the solution (density and viscosity). Two empirical parameters, the effective diameter of the poly-disperse resins for protein adsorption and an exponent of non-unity for $(\rho_{P}-\rho)/\mu$ term, are introduced in the modified Stokes expression. We applied the same type of the modified Stokes expression in combination with the Richardson-Zaki correlation to the published results [1], and found that the expansions of the beds with feed streams containing different amounts of E. coli homogenates can also be successfully described.

  • In the present work the influence of various physical parameters on the two-phase flow behavior in a self-heated porous medium has been studied using a numerical model, that is, the effects of heat generation rate, of porosity, of particle size, and of system pressure on the dryout process. To analyze the effect of these parameters, the variation of both liquid volumetric fraction and liquid axial velocity is evaluated at the steady state or at the onset of a first boiled-out region. The analysis of computational results indicate that a qualitative tendency exists between the parameters such as heat generation rate, porosity, effective particle diameter and the temporal development of the liquid volumetric fraction field up to dryout. In addition to these parameters, a variation of fluid properties such as phase density, phase viscosity due to a change of system pressure can be used for gaining insight into the nature of two-phase flow behavior up to dryout.

  • Flow properties of doenjang samples at various total solid contents (30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40%) were evaluated in this study. Flow properties of doenjang samples was determined by using Haake concentric cylinderical viscometer and Instron testing machine with capillary extrusion viscometer, and consistency index(K), and flow behavior index(n) was also determined from power models, and yield stress was derived form Casson models and vanes methods. Doenjang samples showed shear-thinning (pseudoplastic) fluid with small magnitude of flow behavior index(n) (n=0.30-0.55). Casson yield stress was from 2.11 to 64.02(Pa). Vane yield stress was more effective than casson yield stress in property of reactivation. Apparent viscosity was decreased with the increase in temperature and activation energy was in the range of 6.58 to 10.70 kJ/mole. From the capillary extrusion method, K and n was increased with the increase in solid content with good correlation with. The result revealed that capillary extrusion method is useful for measuring the flow properties of doenjang.

  • Transformer mineral oil which is normally hydrocarbon based is non- biodegradable and pollutes the environment in all aspects. Though vegetable oils are eco-friendly in nature and potentially could be used in transformers as a replacement for the mineral oil, there usage is restricted because of their oxidative instability. The present work focuses on using rapeseed oil and pongamia (pongamia pinnata) oil as effective alternatives for the traditional mineral oil in power transformer. The oxidative stability of the rapeseed oil and pongamia oil is increased by using combinations of the natural and synthetic anti-oxidants as additives. The parameters like breakdown voltage, viscosity, flash point, fire point are measured for the rapeseed oil and pongamia oil with and without the additives as per IEC and ASTM standards. The results shown encouraging changes in the parameter values and ensures the use of the oils as a potential alternative insulation in power transformers.

  • A preparative method has been proposed for obtaining chitosan products which have a desired degree of deacetylation (DD, %) without much decrease in molecular weight. Deacetylation was prepared by two methods. The method I which was proposed by Domard etc. was that DMSO/thiophenol was used repeatedly only during the deacetylation, the method II was that DMSO/thiophenol was used after the alkali treatment. Then, effective deacetylation was performed by the method ll. To determine the degree of deacetylation, potentiometric titration method was adopted. According to the increase of DD, the viscosity average moleclar weght $(\overline{M\upsilon}$) and the DP of the chitosan products were decreased. The intensity of FT-lR peak appeared at $1655cm^{-1}, which was characteristic peak of amide I (Nacetyl secondary amide group), was gradually decreased with deacetylation. X-ray analysis showed that the lattice-spacing in the chitosan film increased with the degree of deacetylation, but the difference of the transparency of the chitosan products was not diverged significantly.

  • To investigate the most effective way of cellulase utilization on paper making process and the systematic way of how to combine its components for better use, purified two major cellulase were applied to bleached kraft pulp at various dosage in the refining process and estimated the synergism effect of each components in the characteristics of papermaking fiber. freeness was not changed by $C_1$ Component dosage but strongly increased by Cx Component dosage. Drop in fiber viscosity, increase in WQV, fiber shortening and fine generation was strongly influenced by Cx Component, it seems to be that Cx Component works a hydrogenate that breaks hydrogen bonding in fiber and enhances pooling effect of fiber. $C_1$ Component was little influenced these characteristics of fiber but considered to help to make fiber surface smooth.

  • Viscosity of cellulose pulp was greatly decreased with endo-xylanase treatment but tiny decreased with exo-xylanase treatment. Change of freeness was greatly influenced with exo-xylanase treatment. The first stage of refining(5,000 revolution), freeness was greatly decreased with exo-xylanase treatment. After middle stage of refining(10,000 revolution) change of freeness was similar to endo-xylanase treatment. WRV(water retention value) was more effective exo-xylanas than endo-xylanase treatment. Interfiber bonding of cellulose fiber was disintegrated with exo-xylanse treatment.

  • It is necessary to use the pavement condition index which evaluates the conditions of pavement objectively and is utilized for effective pavement management. PSI, MCI, UPCI are currently used indices, however, they do not play a role as general indices due to their unfair considerations only for users or managers. Thus, this paper pointed out the problems of current indices and developed a new pavement condition index. Also, a sensitivity analysis on the material properties was conducted for the proposed index using the real data obtained from fields. The material properties affected the index in order of surface thickness, asphalt viscosity and asphalt content.
