  • Highly toxic gases such as hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), carbon dioxide ($CO_2$), and ammonia ($NH_3$) are generated by both nature and human activities and affect human health. In this research, activated carbon combined with $Ca(OH)_2$ and $CaCO_3$ (AC-CO and AC-CC, respectively) were fabricated and applied in absorbing toxic gases from air pollutants. Activated charcoal powder was compressed in the form of pellets and used in the designated conditions. The optimum operating conditions and material properties, such as adsorption capacity, effect of weight ratio of the mixture, and hardness, have been investigated after combining with the calcium derivative. The good performance exhibited in this study suggests that this material is expected to be an effective and economically viable adsorbent for $NH_3$, $CO_2$, and $H_2S$ removal from the air system.

  • The microchannel heat sink is promising heat dissipation method far high density electronic devices. The cross-sectional shape of MEMS based microchannel heat sink is limited to triangular, trapezoidal, and rectangular due to their fabrication method. And heat is added to one side surface of heat source. Therefore, those specific conditions make some complexity of heat transfer in microchannel heat sink. Though many previous research of conjugate heat transfer in microchannel was conducted, most of them did not consider heat loss. In this study, numerical investigation of conjugate heat transfer in rectangular microchannel was conducted. The method of heat loss evaluation was verified numerically. Heat distribution was different for each wall of rectangular microchannel due to thermal conductivity and distance from heat source. However, the ratio of heat from each channel wall was correlated. Therefore, the effective area correction factor could be proposed to evaluate accurate heat flux in one side heating condition.

  • We demonstrate that ruthenium oxide ($RuO_2$) nanotubes with controlled dimensions can be synthesized using facile electrochemical means and anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates. $RuO_2$ nanotubes were formed using a cyclic voltammetric deposition technique and an aqueous plating solution composed of $RuCl_3$. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) was used to determine the effective electrochemical oxidation potential of $Ru^{3+}$ to $RuO_2$. The length and wall thickness of $RuO_2$ nanotubes can be adjusted by varying the range and cycles of the electrochemical cyclic voltammetric potentials. Thick-walled $RuO_2$ nanotubes were obtained using a wide electrochemical potential range (-0.2~1 V). In contrast, an electrochemical deposition potential range from 0.8 to 1 V produced thin-walled and longer $RuO_2$ nanotubes in an identical number of cycles. The dependence of wall thickness and length of $RuO_2$ nanotubes on the range of cyclic voltammetric electrochemical potentials was attributed to the distinct ionic diffusion times. This significantly improves the ratio of surface area to mass of materials synthesized using AAO templates. Furthermore, this study is directive to the controlled synthesis of other metal oxide nanotubes using a similar strategy.

  • Owing to the rapid climate change, a high-performance energy storage system (ESS) for efficient energy consumption has been receiving considerable attention. ESS, such as capacitors, usually has issues with the ion diffusion of electrode materials, resulting in a decrease in their capacitance. Notably, appropriate pore diameter and large specific surface area (SSA) may result in an effective ion diffusion. Therefore, graphene and multi-walled carbon nanotube (graphene@MWCNT) hybrid nanomaterials, with covalent bonds between the graphene and MWCNT, were prepared via an edge-chemistry reaction. The properties of these materials, such as high porosity, large SSA, and high electroconductivity, make them suitable to be used as electrode materials for capacitors. The optimal ratio of graphene to MWCNT can affect the electrochemical performance of the electrode material based on its physical and electrochemical properties. The supercapacitor using optimal graphene-based hybrid electrode material exhibited highest specific capacitance value as 158 F/g and excellent cycle stability.

  • With the synthesis of hyper crosslinked polymer particle (HCPP), having microporous structure with hydroxyl functional group, synthesized via polymerization reaction consists of three stepssuspension polymerization, hyper crosslinking by Friedel-Craft catalysis and hydrolysis reaction, the effects of the ratio of each monomer, hyper crosslinking conditions and $CO_2$ supercritical drying on the variations of surface morphology, pore size & distribution and BET surface area of HCPP have been investigated. It was observed that the formation of surface crack or fracture of HCPP was intimately related with the degree of hyper crosslinking reaction between microphase separated domains. And the value of BET surface area of HCPP increased with the increase of reaction temperature, time and the amounts of solvent used in hyper crosslinking step. Moreover, $CO_2$ supercritical drying was proven to be a very effective method for removing stabilizer, unreacted monomers and oligomers from HCPP but needed to add methanol as a co-solvent for efficient removing of residual catalyst.

  • Recent rapid urban expansion and crowding of various industrial facilities has affected the features of a significant part of downtown area, resulting in areas having buildings with a wide range of height and the foothills. To compute a velocity pressure exposure coefficient, namely the design wind speed factor, this study defines ground surface roughness by utilizing concentration analysis for the height of each building. After obtaining spatial data by extracting a building layer from digital maps, the study area was partitioned for the concentration analysis and to allow investigation of the frequency distribution of building heights. Concentration analysis by building height was determined with the Variation-to-Means Ratio (VMR) and Poisson distribution analysis using a buildings distribution chart, with statistical significance determined using Chi-square verification. Applying geographic information systems (GIS) with the architectural information made it possible to estimate a velocity pressure exposure coefficient factor more quantitatively and objectively, by including geographic features, as compared to current methods. Thus, this method is expected to eliminate inaccuracies that arise when building designers calculate the velocity pressure exposure coefficient in subjective way, and to help increase the wind resistance of buildings in a more logical and cost-effective way.

  • Membrane bioreactor(MBR) processes have been widely applied to wastewater treatment for last decades due to its excellent capability of solid-liquid separation. However, membrane fouling was considered as a limiting factor in wide application of the MBR process. Excess aeration into membrane surface is a common way to control membrane fouling in most MBR. However, the excessively supplied air is easily dissipated in the reactor, which results in consuming energy and thus, it should be modified for effective control of membrane fouling. In this study, cylindrical tube was introduced to MBR in order to use the supplied air effectively. Membrane fibers were immersed into the cylindrical tube. This makes the supplied air non-dissipated in the reactor so that membrane fouling could be controlled economically. Two different air supplying method was employed and compared each other; nozzle and porous diffuser which were located just beneath the membrane module. Transmembrane pressure(TMP) was monitored as a function of airflow rate, flux, and ratio of the tube area and cross-sectioned area of membrane fibers(A$_m$/A$_t$). Flow rate of air and liquid was regulated to obtain slug flow in the cylindrical tube. With the same flow of air supply, nozzle was more effective for controlling membrane fouling than porous diffuser. Accumulation of sludge was observed in the tube with the nozzle, if the air was not suppled sufficiently. Reduction of membrane fouling was dependent upon the ratio, A$_m$/A$_t$. For diffuser, membrane fouling was minimized when A$_m$/A$_t$ was 0.27, but 0.55 for nozzle.

  • Purpose: There is a growing interest in rainwater runoff reduction effect of green roof, as flooding caused by increasing impervious surface is becoming more and more frequent in urban areas. This study was conducted to prove runoff reduction and runoff delay effect of the retentive green roof and to investigate its influencing factors to the rainfall events that occurred in the summer of 2013. Method: The experiment intended to monitor the runoff quantity of the retentive green roof($140m^2$) and normal roof($100m^2$) in #35 building in Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea for 75 days in 2013. Result: On analysis of 9 rainfall events, it showed that the retentive green roof has 24.8~100% of runoff reduction ratio, 21.2~100% of peak flow reduction ratio, 0.5~3.75 hours of peak delay, and $1.8{\sim}7.2m^3$ of retaining capacity in an area of $140m^2$. It shows different results depending on rainfall and antecedent dry days. The results show that runoff reduction effect is effective when the rainfall is less than 50 mm and antecedent dry day is longer than five days on average. By installing retentive green roofs on buildings, it can help mitigate urban floods and rehabilitate urban water cycle.

  • To develop the MEMS cap bonding process without cavity formation, we electroplated Cu/Sn rim structures and measured the bonding characteristics for the Cu/Sn rims of $25{\sim}400{\mu}m$ width. As the effective device-mounting area ratio decreased and the failure strength ratio increased for wider Cu/Sn rim, these two properties were estimated to be optimized for the Cu/Sn rim with 150 ${\mu}m$ width. Complete bonding was accomplished at the whole interfaces of the Cu/Sn packages with the rim widths of 25 ${\mu}m$ and 50 ${\mu}m$. However, voids were observed locally at the interfaces with the rim widths larger than 100 ${\mu}m$. Such voids were formed by local non-contact between the upper and lower rims due to the surface roughness of the electroplated Sn.

  • Silica supported $Cs_{2.5}H_{0.5}PMo_{12}O_{40}$ catalyst was prepared through sol-gel method with ethyl silicate-40 as silicon resource and characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption and potentiometric titration methods. The $Cs_{2.5}H_{0.5}PMo_{12}O_{40}$ particles with Keggin-type structure well dispersed on the surface of silica, and the catalyst exhibited high surface area and acidity. The catalytic performance of the catalysts for benzene liquid-phase nitration was examined with 65% nitric acid as nitrating agent, and the effects of various parameters were tested, which including temperature, time and amount of catalyst, reactants ratio, especially the recycle of catalyst was emphasized. Benzene was effectively nitrated to mononitro-benzene with high conversion (95%) in optimized conditions. Most importantly, the supported catalyst was proved has excellent stability in the nitration progress, and there were no any other organic solvent and sulfuric acid were used in the reaction system, so the liquid-phase nitration of benzene that we developed was an eco-friendly and attractive alternative for the commercial technology.
