A tendon model that can effectively be used in finite element analyses of prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with bonded tendons is proposed on the basis of the bond characteristics between a tendon and its surrounding concrete. Since tensile forces between adjacent cracks are transmitted from a tendon to concrete by bond forces, the constitutive law of a bonded tendon stiffened by grouting is different from that of a bare tendon. Accordingly, the apparent yield stress of an embedded tendon is determined from the bond-slip relationship. The definition of the multi-linear average stress-strain relationship is then obtained through a linear interpolation of the stress difference at the post-yielding stage. Unlike in the case of a bonded tendon, on the other hand, a stress increase beyond the effective prestress in an unbonded tendon is not section-dependent but member-dependent. The tendon stress unequivocally represents a uniform distribution along the length when the friction loss is excluded. Thus, using a strain reduction factor, the modified stress-strain curve of an unbonded tendon is derived by successive iterations. The validity of the proposed two tendon models is verified through correlation studies between analytical and experimental results for PSC beams and slabs.

This study presents the results of parametric studies of the P-M interaction diagram of hollow prestressed concrete bridge columns. Among the numerous parameters, this study concentrates on concrete compressive strength, prestressing steel reinforcement ratio, effective prestress, the Ds/Do ratio, and the Di/Do ratio. The strength and ductility of hollow prestressed concrete bridge columns were evaluated through quasistatic tests. The P-M interaction diagrams from the codes were different from that of the results, which were in good agreement with AASHTO-LRFD. Nondimensionalized P-M interaction diagrams were developed to predict the design resistance of hollow prestressed concrete bridge columns.

The analysis and design procedure of intermediate support strut for the innovative prestressed scaffolding (IPS) system was presented in this paper. The stability check of intermediate support strut is required as the behavior of the strut system is similar to that of the built-up column. The computer analysis model of the support strut was constructed for in-plane and out-of-plane buckling analysis, and the design of the support strut was performed. Using the eigenvalue for the buckling load and the member forces of support strut under design earth pressure, the effective buckling length was estimated. The allowable axial and bending stresses were calculated considering the effective buckling length. The combined stresses due to these axial forces and bending moment were estimated to be satisfied the safety condition of the intermediate support strut.

In this study, the shear strength of prestressed concrete deep beams is predicted using finite element analysis, and the variation in the shear strength according to the degree of prestressing is investigated. Numerical analysis results are compared with results obtained by the strut-and-tie model and associated experiments. Numerical analyses are performed on prestressed concrete deep beams with different values of concrete strength, effective prestress, ratio of tensile reinforcement, and shear span to effective depth ratio. The shear strength predicted by the numerical analysis is similar to the experimental value obtained, with an error of less than 5%. However, the strut-and-tie model highly overestimated the shear strength of prestressed concrete deep beams with a concentrated loading area. The ultimate shear capacity of prestressed concrete deep beams increased linearly with increasing prestresss applied to the tendon.
Seven post-tensioned lightweight concrete (LWC) beam specimens were tested under a symmetrical two-point top loading system. The parameters investigated were the amounts of mild longitudinal reinforcement and effective prestressing. The design compressive strength and dry density of the LWC tested were 30 MPa and 1,770 $kg/m^3$, respectively. Similar to post-tensioned normal weight concrete (NWC) beams, the crack propagation and stress increase of the unbonded tendons were significantly affected by the amounts of mild longitudinal reinforcement and effective prestressing. With the increase in the amounts of mild longitudinal reinforcement and effective prestressing, the serviceability and flexural capacity of the beams were enhanced whereas the stress increase in the unbonded tendons decreased. To control the crack width in post-tensioned LWC beams, a minimum amount of mild longitudinal reinforcement specified in ACI 318-08 provision is required. The flexural behavior of post-tensioned LWC beams and stress increase of the unbonded tendons could be rationally predicted by the proposed non-linear two-dimensional analysis. On the other hand, ACI 318-08 flexure provision was too conservative about the post-tensioned LWC beams.
The objective of the present study is to examine the flexural behavior of two-span post-tensioned lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) beams using unbonded tendons and the reliability of the design provisions of ACI 318-14 for such beams. The parameters investigated were the effective prestress and loading type, including the symmetrical top one-point, two third-point, and analogous uniform loading systems. The unbonded prestressing three-wire strands were arranged with a harped profile of variable eccentricity. The total length of the beam, measured between both strand anchorages, was 11000 mm. The test results were compared with those compiled from simply supported LWAC one-way members, wherever possible. The ultimate load capacity of the present beam specimens was evaluated by the collapse mechanism of the plasticity theorem and the nominal section moment strength calculated following the provision of the ACI 318-14. The test results showed that the two-span post-tensioned LWAC beams had lower stress increase (Δfps) in the unbonded tendons than the simply supported LWAC beams with a similar reinforcement index. The effect of the loading type on Δfps and displacement ductility was less significant for two-span beams than for the comparable simply supported beams. The design equations for Δfps and Δfps proposed by ACI 318-14 and Harajli are conservative for the present two-span post-tensioned LWAC beams, although the safety decreases for the two-span beam, compared to the ratios between experiments and predictions obtained from simply supported beams.

In pretensioned concrete members, a certain bond length from the end of the member is required to secure the effective prestress in the strands, which is defined as the transfer length. However, due to the complex bond mechanism between strands and concrete, most transfer length models based on the deterministic approach have uncertainties and do not provide accurate estimations. Therefore, in this study, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), a Neuro-Fuzzy System, is introduced to reduce the uncertainties and to estimate the transfer length more accurately in pretensioned concrete member. A total of 253 transfer length test results have been collected from literatures to train ANFIS, and the trained ANFIS algorithm estimated the transfer length very accurately. In addition, a design equation was proposed to calculate the transfer length based on parametric studies and dimensional analyses. Consequently, the proposed equation provided accurate results on the transfer length which are comparable to the ANFIS analysis results.

The present study reports a simple unbonded-type shear strengthening technique for reinforced concrete beams using wire rope units. Fifteen beams failed in shear were repaired and strengthened with wire rope units, and then retested to failure. Influence of the prestressing force, orientation and spacing of wire rope units on the shear behavior of strengthened beams having shear span-to-depth ratios of 1.5, 2.5, or 3.25 were investigated. Test results showed that beams strengthened with wire rope units exhibited a higher shear strength and a larger post-failure deformation than the corresponding original beams. Inclined wire rope units was more effective for shear strength enhancement than vertical wire rope units. The increase of the prestressing force in wire rope units causes the decrease of the principal tensile stress in concrete, as a result, the diagonal tensile cracking strength of strengthened beams was higher than that of the corresponding original beams. Shear capacity of strengthened beams is compared with predictions obtained from ACI 318-05 and EC 2. Shear capacity of strengthened beams having shear span-to-depth ratio below 2.5 is reasonably predicted using ACI 318-05 formula. On the other hand, EC 2 overestimates the shear transfer capacity of wire rope units for beams having shear span-to-depth ratio above 2.5.

Seismic performance and retrofit of reinforced concrete (RC) two-column piers widely used at roadway bridges in Korea was experimentally evaluated. Ten two-column piers that were 400 mm in diameter and 2,000 mm in height were constructed. These piers were subjected to hi-directional cyclic loadings under a constant axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Test parameters were the confinement steel ratio, loading pattern, lap splice of longitudinal reinforcing bars, and retrofitting method. Specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal bars were retrofitted with steel jacket, pre-stressing steel wire, and steel band. Test result showed that while the specimens subjected to bi-directional lateral cyclic loadings which consisted of two main amplitudes in the transverse axis and two sub amplitudes in longitudinal axis, referred to as a T-series cyclic loadings, exhibited plastic hinges both at the top and bottom parts of the column, the specimens subjected to bi-directional lateral cyclic loadings in an opposite way, referred to as a L-series cyclic loadings, exhibited a plastic hinge only at the bottom of the column. The displacement ductility of the specimen under the T-series loadings was bigger than that of the specimen under the L-series loadings. Specimen retrofitted with pre-stressing steel wires exhibited poor ductility due to the upward shift of the plastic hinge region because of over-reinforcement, but specimens retrofitted with steel jacket and steel band showed the required displacement ductility. Steel band can be an effective retrofitting scheme to improve the seimsic performance of RC bridge piers, considering its practical construction.

This study is devoted to the problems of thermal and autogenous expansion stresses in order to avoid cracking using chemically prestressing method. The chemical prestress can be induced by autogenous expansion characteristics of MgO concrete made in specific burning temperature. The volume change induced cracking has great influence on the long-term durability and serviceability. To evaluate risk of cracking, the computer programs for analysis of thermal and autogenous expansion stresses were developed. In these 3-D finite element procedures, long-term autogenous expansive deformation is modeled and its resultant stress is calculated and then verified by comparison with manual calculation results. In this study, the stress development is related to thermal and autogenous expansive deformation. Using the developed program, residual stresses of MgO concrete were compared and analysed in the example From the numerical results it is found that long-term, and temperature dependent expansive concrete with light-burnt MgO is most effective in controlling the risk of cracking of mass concrete because it has high temperature for long period. The developed analysis program can be efficiently utilized as a useful tool to evaluate the thermal and autogenous expansion stresses in mass concrete structures with lightly burnt MgO.
