In this study, a new model to predict the effective elastic constants of composites with spherical fillers is proposed. The original Eshelby model is extended to a finite filler volume fraction without using Mori-Tanaka's mean field approach. When single filler is embedded in the matrix, the effective elastic constants of the composite are computed. The composite is in turn considered as a new matrix, where new single filler is again embedded in the matrix. The predicted results by the present model with a series of embedding procedures are compared with those by Mori-Tanaka, self-consistent, and generalized self-consistent models. It is revealed through parametric studies such as stiffness ratio of the filler to the matrix and filler volume fraction that the present model gives more accurate predictions than Mori-Tanaka model without using the complicated numerical scheme used in self-consistent and generalized self-consistent models.
Theoretical and numerical assessments of approximate evaluations and simplified analyses of piezoelectric structures transverse shear modal effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) are presented. Therefore, the latter is first introduced theoretically and its approximate evaluations are reviewed; then, three-dimensional (3D) and simplified two-dimensional (2D) plane-strain (PStrain) and plane-stress (PStress) piezoelectric constitutive behaviors of electroded shear piezoceramic patches are derived and corresponding expected short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) frequencies and resulting EMCC are discussed; next, using a piezoceramic shear sandwich beam cantilever typical benchmark, a 3D finite element (FE) assessment of different evaluation techniques of the shear modal effective EMCC is conducted, including the equipotential (EP) constraints effect; finally, 2D PStrain and PStress FE modal analyses under SC and OC electric conditions, are conducted and corresponding results (SC/OC frequencies and resulting effective EMCC) are compared to 3D ones. It is found that: (i) physical EP constraints reduce drastically the shear modal effective EMCC; (ii) PStress and PStrain results depend strongly on the filling foam stiffness, rendering inadequate the use of popular equivalent single layer models for the transverse shear-mode sandwich configuration; (iii) in contrary to results of piezoelectric shunted damping and energy harvesting popular single-degree-of-freedom-based models, transverse shear modal effective EMCC values are very small in particular for the first mode which is the common target of these applications.
Thin film coatings are commonly exploited to minimize wear and optimize the frictional behavior of various precision mechanical systems. The enhancement of thin film durability is directly related to the performance maximization of the system. Therefore, a fine approach to analyze the thin film wear behavior is required. Archard's equation is a representative and well-developed law that defines the wear coefficient, which is the probability of creating wear particles. A ploughing model is a commonly used model to determine the friction force during the abrasive contact. The equations demonstrate that the friction force and wear coefficient are inversely proportional to the hardness of the material. In this study, Archard's equation and ploughing models are modified with an effective hardness to minimize the gap between the experimental and numerical results. It is noted that the effective hardness is the hardness variation with respect to the penetration depth owing to the substrate effect. The nanoindentation method is utilized to characterize the effective hardness of Cu film. The wear coefficient value considering the effective hardness is more than three times higher than that without considering the effective hardness. The friction force predicted with the effective hardness agreed better with the results obtained directly from the friction force detecting sensor. This outcome is expected to improve the accuracy of friction and wear amount predictions.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) systems have proved the most effective and popular file sharing applications in recent years. Previous studies mainly focused on equal service and differentiated service strategies when peers have no initial data before their downloads. For an upload-constrained P2P file sharing system, we model both the equal service process and the differentiated service process when the initial data distribution of peers satisfies some special conditions. Moreover, we show how to minimize the time required to distribute the file to any number of peers. The proposed fluid-based models can reveal the intrinsic relations among the initial data amount, the peer set size, and the minimum last finish time. The closed-form expressions derived from the extended models can closely approximate chunk-based models and systems, especially for relatively large files. As an application of the extended models, we show how to provide differentiated service efficiently to multiple peer sets. Since no limits are imposed on the upload bandwidth of peers or the size of each peer set, we believe that our analytic process and the results achieved can provide not only fundamental insights into bandwidth allocation and data scheduling but also a helpful reference for both improving system performance and building an effective incentive mechanism for P2P file sharing systems.

Recent studies show the possibility of more frequent extreme events as a result of the changing climate. These weather extremes, such as excessive rainfall, result to debris flow, river overflow and urban flooding, which post a substantial threat to the community. Therefore, an effective flood model is a crucial tool in flood disaster mitigation. In recent years, a number of flood models has been established; however, the major challenge in developing effective and accurate inundation models is the inconvenience of running multiple models for separate conditions. Among the solutions in recent researches is the development of the combined 1D-2D flood modeling. The coupled 1D-2D river flood modeling allows channel flows to be represented in 1D and the overbank flow to be modeled over two-dimension. To test the efficiency of this approach, this research aims to assess the capability of HEC-RAS model's implementation of the combined 1D-2D hydraulic simulation of river overflow inundation, and compare with the results of GERIS and FLUMENS 2D flood model. Results show similar output to the flood models that had used different methods. This proves the applicability of the HEC-RAS 1D-2D coupling method as a powerful tool in simulating accurate inundation for flood events.
The failure behavior of reinforced concrete beams is governed by the mechanical relationships between the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, load and support conditions, and material properties. In this study, two simple indeterminate strut-tie models which can reflect all characteristics of the failure behavior of reinforced concrete beams were proposed. The proposed models are effective for the beams with shear span-to-effective depth ratio of less than 3. For each model, a load distribution ratio, defined as the fraction of load transferred by a truss mechanism, is also proposed to help structural designers perform the rational design of the beams by using the strut-tie model approaches of current design codes. In the determination of the load distribution ratios, the effect of the primary design variables including shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength of concrete was reflected through numerous material nonlinear analysis of the proposed indeterminate strut-tie models. In the companion paper, the validity of the proposed models and load distribution ratios was examined by applying them to the evaluation of the failure strength of 335 reinforced concrete beams tested to failure by others.

The strut-tie model approach has proven to be effective in the ultimate analysis and design of structural concrete with disturbed regions. For the reliable analysis and safe design of the structural concrete, however, the effective strengths of concrete struts must be determined accurately. In this study, the equations of the effective strengths of concrete struts, which are useful for the three types of determinate and indeterminate strut-tie models of reinforced concrete corbels, were proposed. The effects of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, the vertical-to-horizontal force ratio, and flexural and horizontal shear reinforcement ratios were reflected in the development of the proposed equations. To examine the appropriateness of the proposed and existing equations, the ultimate strengths of 243 reinforced concrete corbels tested to failure were evaluated by using the three types of corbel strut-tie models.

Recently, the requirements of multi-resolution models of a solid model, which represent an object at multiple levels of feature detail, are increasing for engineering tasks such as analysis, network-based collaborative design, and virtual prototyping and manufacturing. The research on this area has focused on several topics: topological frameworks for representing multi-resolution solid models, criteria for the level of detail (LOD), and generation of valid models after rearrangement of features. As a solution to the feature rearrangement problem, the new concept of the effective zone of a feature is introduced in the former part of the paper. In this paper, we propose a feature-based non-manifold modeling system to provide multi-resolution models of a feature-based solid or non-manifold model on the basis of the effective feature zones. To facilitate the implementation, we introduce the class of the multi-resolution feature whose attributes contain all necessary information to build a multi-resolution solid model and extract LOD models from it. In addition, two methods are introduced to accelerate the extraction of LOD models from the multi-resolution modeling database: the one is using an NMT model, known as a merged set, to represent multi-resolution models, and the other is storing differences between adjacent LOD models to accelerate the transition to the other LOD. We also suggest the volume of the feature, regardless of feature type, as a criterion for the LOD. This criterion can be used in a wide range of applications, since there is no distinction between additive and subtractive features unlike the previous method.
In this study, the ultimate strength of 335 simply supported reinforced concrete beams with shear span-to-effective depth ratio of less than 3 was evaluated by the ACI 318-14's strut-tie model approach implemented with the indeterminate strut-tie models and load distribution ratios of the companion paper. The ultimate strength of the beams was also estimated by using the experimental shear strength models, the theoretical shear strength models, and the current strut-tie model design codes. The validity of the proposed strut-tie models and load distribution ratios was examined by comparing the strength analysis results classified according to the prime design variables of the shear span-to-effective depth ratio, flexural reinforcement ratio, and compressive strength of concrete.
The shear strength of unsaturated soils, a research hotspot in geotechnical engineering, has great guiding significance for geotechnical engineering design. Although kinds of calculation models for the shear strength of unsaturated soil have been put forward by predecessors, there is still need for new models to extensively consider the nonlinear variation of shear strength, particularly for the nonlinear effect of the net normal stress on the shear strength of unsaturated soil. Here, the shear strength of unsaturated soils is explored to study the nonlinear effects of net normal stress with the introduction of a general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion, and the relationship between the matric suction (or suction stress) and degree of saturation (DOS) constructed by the soil-water characteristics curve (SWCC) of van Genuchten is also applied for unsaturated soil. Then, two calculation models (i.e., an envelope shell model and an effective stress model) are established for the shear strength of unsaturated soils under the nonlinear strength theory. In these two models, the curve of the shear strength of unsaturated soils versus the net normal stress exhibits a tendency to gently. Moreover, the proposed formulas have flexibility and convenience with five parameters (for the effective stress model) or six parameters (for the envelope shell model), which are from the M-C strength parameters of the saturated soil and fitting parameters of SWCC of van Genuchten. Thereafter, by comparison with the classical theory of the shear strength of unsaturated soils from some actual cases, the rationality and accuracy of the present models were verified.
