  • This study aimed to obtain basic climate information for effective moisture control in wood in Korea. Two independent climate indexes, namely drying index (DI) and wetting index (WI), were determined using hourly weather data for 82 locations recorded from 2009 to 2017. These data were collected from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). Hourly data had not been measured prior to 2009. DI and WI revealed that all regions were cold and wet except Baengnyeongdo, which was classified as a cold and dry region. DI and WI were normalized assuming that wetting and drying were equally important phenomena. Then, the normalized indexes were combined into moisture index (MI) to rank the moisture loading of the regions. The MIs showed that Seogwipo had the greatest moisture loading in Korea, followed by Seongsan, Namhae, and Geoje. The MIs suggested that Korea exhibited severe moisture loading. Further studies are required to investigate the relation between MI and moisture content on wood surfaces from a wood maintenance point of view.

  • This paper proposes a new image retrieval method called the 3D integrated multi-index to fuse SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) visual words with other features at the indexing level. The advantage of the 3D integrated multi-index is that it can produce finer subdivisions in the search space. Compared with the inverted indices of medium-sized codebook, the proposed method increases time slightly in preprocessing and querying. Particularly, the SIFT, contour and colour features are fused into the integrated multi-index, and the joint cooperation of complementary features significantly reduces the impact of false positive matches, so that effective image retrieval can be achieved. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets show that the 3D integrated multi-index significantly improves the retrieval accuracy. While compared with other methods, it requires an acceptable memory usage and query time. Importantly, we show that the 3D integrated multi-index is well complementary to many prior techniques, which make our method compared favorably with the state-of-the-arts.

  • Purpose: The main objective of this research is to construct an AI-based Composite Supplementary Index (ACSI) model to achieve accurate predictions of the Composite Index of Business Indicators. By incorporating various economic indicators as independent variables, the ACSI model enables the prediction and analysis of both the leading index (CLI) and coincident index (CCI). Methods: This study proposes an AI-based Composite Supplementary Index (ACSI) model that leverages diverse economic indicators as independent variables to forecast leading and coincident economic indicators. To evaluate the model's performance, advanced machine learning techniques including MLP, RNN, LSTM, and GRU were employed. Furthermore, the study explores the potential of employing deep learning models to train the weights associated with the independent variables that constitute the composite supplementary index. Results: The experimental results demonstrate the superior accuracy of the proposed composite supple- mentary index model in predicting leading and coincident economic indicators. Consequently, this model proves to be highly effective in forecasting economic cycles. Conclusion: In conclusion, the developed AI-based Composite Supplementary Index (ACSI) model successfully predicts the Composite Index of Business Indicators. Apart from its utility in management, economics, and investment domains, this model serves as a valuable indicator supporting policy-making and decision-making processes related to the economy.

  • We present a new modified effective index method which can be used to analyze lightwave circuit devices in 3-dimensional structure fast and accruatly using 2-dimensional BPM (beam propagating method). This method can analyze the devices with the cross-section of rectangular, ridge, or similar shapes accurately but more quickly than the 3-dimensional BPM, which is impractical to use on account of long calculating time. As an example, we showed that the calculation error of coupling length in a directional coupler by this method is significantly less than the 2-dimensional BPM using the effective index method.

  • Anti-reflection film was coated by using spherical silica nano colloidal particles and fumed silica particles. Silica colloid sol was reserved between two inclined slide glasses by capillary force, and particles were stacked to form a film onto the substrate as the upper glass was sliding. The deposition processes were studied to enhance the wavelength dependency of the light transmittance and to control the effective refractive index of the film. Both of the spherical and fumed silica particles showed an enhancement of $4.0-4.4\%$ in light transmittance by one step coating. The dependence of the transmittance on wavelength was largely improved at the longer wavelength by partial coating of fumed particles on the film of spherical particles. The effective refractive index of the film was controlled by removing latex particles that were co-deposited with silica particles. Using this process the light reflectance from one side of the glass substrate could be reduced from $4.2\%$ to $0.6\%$ although zero reflectance was not achieved due to the agglomeration of the latex particles.

  • In this paper we will show theoretically that a refractive index grating exhibits a retro-self-focusing effect and an accompanying pinholing effect under the Gaussian intensity distribution of an incident optical field. Those effects result from an effective wave number change of the medium due to the intense optical field.

  • This research has set up the fire fighting general index for Fire fighting of Crowded Wooden Building Cultural Asset which is composed of traditional wooden building instinct or complex. The results of this study are as follows. First, Fire fighting general index for crowded wooden building cultural asset, it is necessary to set fire fighting priority by considering fire risk and cultural asset characteristic and establish the system to cope with fire disaster in the most effective way by arranging facilities with restricted resource. Second, Fire risk is the index to draw fire and spread risk of cultural asset by applying index calculation processes such as fire load, burning velocity and ignition material spread characteristic to various aspects such as individual building and complex and combining their results. Cultural asset importance index consists of individual building evaluation, publicity security degree, area importance evaluation and historical landscape degree evaluation. Third, for each index combination process, weight of each index is drawn on the basis of AHP analysis result that is performed to the specialists of related fields. The formula to apply and combine it is prepared to apply the model to include meaning of each index and comparative importance degree.

  • Kim et al.. (2003) developed an Economic Instability Index (EII) by using mean squared error (MSE) from the neural network (NN) trained on the 1995 KOSPI. In this paper we study validity of the NN. For this we compare the NN with the well known Box-Jenkins linear auto-regressive processes. Our conclusive understanding of the problem is that the NN provides quite effective EII because it tends to overfit.

  • The effect of eccentricity on dispersion and nonlinear properties of a photonic crystal fiber having elliptical air holes is investigated using a fully vectorial effective index method. It is found that the effective refractive index increases with increase of eccentricity. The dependence of dispersion and nonlinear properties of the PCF on the eccentricity of the air hole is investigated. It is revealed that eccentricity of the air hole affects the zero dispersion wavelength. Further, the nonlinear properties such as mode field area, nonlinear coefficient and self phase modulation of the Photonic crystal fibers are analyzed. The mode field area increases and the nonlinear coefficient decreases with increase in eccentricity. The variation of the self phase modulation with elliptical air hole is also discussed.
