  • This study was conducted to characterize on the relationships of rainfall intensity and infiltration rate of rainfall dependent on unit weight change in the gneissic weathered soil by a column test equipment. In this study, volumetric water content and pore water pressure were measured using TDR sensors and tensiometers at regular time intervals. Rainfall conditions including continuous rainfall and repeated rainfall were selected in order to know the effect of antecedent rainfall. In the condition of rainfall intensity 20mm/h and the unit weights of soil as $1.35g/cm^3$, $1.55g/cm^3$ and $1.61g/cm^3$, average rainfall infiltration rate was $2.814{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$, $1.969{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ and $1.252{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ respectively. The higher rainfall intensity and lower unit weight of soil, the faster average infiltration rate. Overflow in the column was happened except rainfall condition of rainfall intensity 20mm and soil unit weight $1.35g/cm^3$. Increasing the soil unit weight, overflowed water was increased and occurrence time was faster.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of the climate change to the level of groundwater recharging. This research was conducted on the watershed of Bangga by using the Soil Water Balance of MockWyn-UB model. Input data compose of evapotranspiration, monthly rainfall, watershed area, canopy interception, heavy rain factor and the influence of climate change factors (rainfall and temperature). The conclusion of this study indicates that there is a decreasing trend in annual groundwater recharge observed from 1995 to 2011. The amount of groundwater recharge varied linearly with monthly rainfall and between 3% to 25% of the rainfall. This result implies that rain contributed more than groundwater recharge to runoff and evaporation and the groundwater recharge and Bangga River discharge depends largely on the rainfall. In order to increase the groundwater recharge in the study area, reforestation programmes should be intensified.

  • The effect of Combined Sewer Overflow on the river system was investigated throughout three preliminary field tests and three main ones. As a result of the study, Combined Sewer Overflow did not affect water qualities on the main stream since the concentration of the main stream did not significantly changed during rainfall events although the water quality of tributaries has rapidly deteriorated due to the influence of the Combined Sewer Overflow during rainfall events. The main cause of the result is that the flow rate of the tributaries is considerably lower than that of the main stream, so that the tributaries with deteriorated water quality during rainfall events did not significantly affect the quality of the actual main stream. Therefore, the water quality of the Kumho River is more affected by the wastewater treatment facilities that discharges water continuously to the main stream than pollutants from non-point pollution sources during rainfall events. As a result, managements for discharges from wastewater treatment facilities should be strengthened in order to improve the water quality of the river.

  • Traffic volume data is basic information that is used in a wide variety of fields. Existing missing traffic volume data imputation method did not take the effect on the rainfall. This research analyzed considering of the rainfall effect in missing traffic volume data imputation method. In order to consider the effect of rainfall, established the following assumption. When missing of traffic volume data generated in rainy days it would be more accurate to use only the traffic volume data of the past rainy days. To confirm this assumption, compared for accuracy of imputed results at three kinds of imputation method(Unconditional Mean, Auto Regression, Expectation-Maximization Algorithm). The analysis results, the case on consideration of the rainfall effect was more low error occurred.

  • Discharged pollution load for the management of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) is calculated on the basis of rainfall data for reference year. Rainfall has an influence on discharged pollution load in unit watershed with combined sewer system. This study reviewed the status of discharged pollution load and rainfall conditions. We also investigated rainfall effects on discharged pollution load by analyzing change of the load in accordance with increase of rainfall. The change ratio of discharged pollution load was 18.6% while inflow load only 5.8% for 5 years from 2004 to 2008 in Daejeon district. The greatest rainfall and rain days were over 2 times than the least during the period. This change in rainfall could have great effect on discharged pollution load. The analysis showed that discharged pollution load increased 2.1 times in case rainfall increased 2 times and 1.2 times in case rain days increased 2 times. Rainfall effects, therefore, should be considered to make resonable evaluation of discharged pollution load in the assessment of annual performances.

  • When a weapon system is developed, climate elements such as temperature, rainfall, and so on have an effect on development costs and a developing period. Therefore, effects of environment and climate must be examined throughly before the design of weapon systems and be applied to their developments. And so, operational and storage requirements for weapon systems are determined and are applied to related tests through analyzing not only environmental factors such as vibration, shock, and so on, but also climate factors. In this paper, the distribution and the frequency of occurrence of rainfall were analyzed and were suggested as a good guide to determine standards of tests for weapon systems when it's raining.

  • It has been reported that many slope failures in unsaturated soils are mainly caused by downward infiltration due to rainfall. The rainfall characteristics could be an important factor, and more predictable slope failures can be achieved by considering more reasonable rainfall conditions. So, a need exists that these trends of infiltration in weathered soils, which is commonly found in Korea, are assessed by considering rainfall conditions based on phenomenological approach. In this paper, numerical analyses of unsaturated soil slope under rainfall conditions are presented based on the soil-water characteristic curve in the laboratory and huff method. Then the performance of unsaturated weathered soil slopes was evaluated under various conditions after applying the effect of overburden pressure on SWCCs and fines contents. The results demonstrated that the rainfall conditions using Huff method can be very effective and the proper application on analysis is very important to enhance the prediction on unsaturated slope stability.

  • Increasing incidences of landslides in Korea are endangering life and damaging property. To ascertain the cause of the rapid increase in landslides in 2020, this study analyzed the correlation between frequency of their occurrence and persistence of rainfall. The study area comprised seven areas in Gangwon-do, Gyeonggi-do, Gyeongsangnam-do, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Chungcheongnam-do. The used rainfall factors were monthly rainfall in June, July, and August, rainfall during the summer (June-August), rainfall during the monsoon season, and number of precipitation days during the summer and during the monsoon season. The effect of these factors on landslides was identified by comparing them with the occurrence of landslides in the year of increased landslide occurrence in each area. The results confirmed that not only rainfall but also the number of precipitation days during the monsoon season affect the occurrence of landslides. The rapid increase in landslide occurrence in 2020 was attributed to increases in both the number of precipitation days during the monsoon season and rainfall during the monsoon season in 2020. These results are expected to be used as basic data for future landslide warning standards that consider the effect of the persistence of rainfall.

  • One-dimensional rainfall laboratory tests using gneissic weathered soil were conducted to investigate effect of antecedent rainfall on infiltration characteristics. Experimental results using samples from Chuncheon and Chungju sites showed that rainfall onto the ground surface decreased initial negative pore water pressure of unsaturated soils, which recovered gradually after the end of rainfall. Rainfall intensity increases water infiltration rate, and infiltration rate during main rainfall is faster than that of the preceding rainfall. It is considered that higher water saturation after antecedent rainfall increases water infiltration rate during main rainfall. In particular, Chungju sample with higher clay content had slower recovery of negative pore water pressure and infiltration rate. Numerical results using finite element slope stability analysis showed that reduction of initial negative pore pressure due to rainfall infiltration deteriorates slope stability, and diffusion of pore water pressure after the end of rainfall further reduces FS of the slope in the short term. Main rainfall after prior rainfall further reduced factor of safety of the unsaturated slope. Pattern of antecedent rainfall has a significant impact on the magnitude and distribution of initial pore water pressure in unsaturated soils which are controlling factor to assess factor of safety of unsaturated slope during rainfall.

  • The Saemangeum watershed is required to manage water pollution effectively but the effect of liquid manure (LM) on soil and water quality in the basin is not clearly identified as yet. This study aims at assessing the effect on soil of a rice field and water quality of water bodies near the rice field during rice-crop time period to find out the effect of LM, the effect of rainfall, and the effect of rice-crop environment on soil and water quality by analyzing data of nitrogen components. As a result of the LM distribution, $NO_3-N$ was much higher than other N components in the entire soil layers and it was accelerated by rainfall right after the LM distribution. Compared to chemical fertilizer (CF), LM was slightly affected but still influenced on the surface water quality. During weak rainfall, low nitrogen concentration in topsoil was resulted as NH3-N decreased and Org-N and $NO_3-N$ increased. $NO_3-N$ concentration in the water of irrigation canals increased with time. During intensive rainfall, $NO_3-N$ and Org-N of the soil were measured highly in the submerged condition, while the water quality of the rice field was lower due to flooding into the irrigation canal as well as the growth of the rice plants. Also, total nitrogen was increased more than 7 times and it showed serious water quality deterioration due to LM and excessive fertilizer distribution, and rainfall during all rice-crop processes. The effect of LM on water quality should be studied consistently to provide critical data while considering weather condition, cropping conditions, soil characteristics, and so on.
