Although previous studies revealed the association of physical activity with mortality rate, it is unclear whether there is a linear trend between physical activity and mortality rate. In this study, the association of physical activity with the risk of all-cause mortality was analysed using Cox's proportional hazard model for a cohort of 14,204 healthy Korean men aged 40-59 years followed up for 4 years(Jan. 1993-Dec. 1996). Physical activity and other life style were surveyed by a postal questionnaire in December 1992. Total of 14,204 subjects were grouped into quartiles by physical activity. Using death certificate data, 123 deaths were identified. The second most active quartile had a lowest mortality .ate with relative risk of 0.44(95% C.I. : 0.23-0.84) compared with most sedentary quartile, showing a J-shape pattern of physical activity-mortality curve. By examining the difference in proportion of cause of the death between most active quartile and the other quartiles, there was no significant difference of proportional mortality from cardiovascular deaths, cerebrovascular deaths or deaths from trauma. The covariates were stratified into two group between which the trend of RR was compared to test the effect modification. There was no remarkable effect modification by alcohol intake, smoking, body mass index, calorie consumption, percent fat consumption. In conclusion, moderate activity was found to have more protective effect on all-cause mortality than vigorous activity and that the J-shape pattern of physical activity-mortality curve was not due to the difference of mortality pattern or effect modification by alcohol intake, smoking, body mass index, calorie consumption and percent fat consumption.

The present study was undertaken to investigate modification in electrophysiological characteristics of cat dorsal horn cells resulting from carrageenin-induced inflammation. The followings were studied; 1) the time-course of changes in responses of the WDR (wide dynamic range) cell 1-3h after subcutaneous injection of carrageenin in its receptive field; 2) the responses of the same dorsal hern cells before and after induction of inflammation; 3) the effect of inflammation on the responsiveness of dorsal horn neurons to algogens (bradykinin & potassium); and 4) the effect of inflammation on the activity of WDR cell following administration of indomethacin and clonidine. Though responses of WDR neuron were increased dramatically during first 1h, the maximal enhancement was observed 3h after induction of inflammation especially by repetitive light tactile stimulus. Following carrageenin injection the majority of WDR neurons (10/15 units) showed enhanced responses to all the mechanical stimuli while in 3 cases responsiveness were intensified during activation by one tactile stimulus (brush or pressure). One cell was unaffected by inflammation and in another case the response was enhanced only to noxious stimulus. Five of 9 cells that could initially be driven by noxious stimulus were activated more strongly by same stimulus and even by tactile stimulus (pressure) following inflammation. In 2 cases neurons were sensitized only to noxious stimulus whereas in another 2 cells that did not show enhanced responses to noxious stimulus responses to light tactile stimulus (pressure) appeared after inflammation. Of 16 LT cells tested 6 responded to squeeze while 4 showed the characteristics of WDR cell following inflammation. No modification in responsiveness was recognized in 3 cells whereas response to only brush was enhanced in another 3 neurons. Following carrageenin injection responses of LT cell to bradykinin or $K^{+}$ were not altered whereas those of WOR neurons to bradykinin or $K^{+}$ were suppressed in 22.2% and 33.3% of cases, respectively. In two of 8 activity of HT cells were inhibited by bradykinin while in five of 8 responsiveness to $K^{+}$ were rather enhanced by inflammation. In the rest inflammation was ineffective. In inflammation-induced animal the receptive field of LT cell was not changed whereas those of WDR cell and HT cell were tremendously expanded. The enhanced responses of WDR neurons to mechanical stimuli resulted from inflammation were suppressed by intravenously injected indomethacin and clonidine suggesting that postaglandin is involved in inflammation-induced sensitization of these cells. The involvement of peripheral and central mechanisms in the modification in responsiveness of dorsal horn cells in the carrageenin-induced inflammation was discussed.
Conventional paints for conversion coating applications in steel production derived mainly from water-based polymer dispersions containing several additives actually show good general performance, but suffer from poor scratch and abrasion resistance during use. The reason for this is because the relatively soft organic binder matrix dominates the mechanical surface properties. In order to maintain the high quality and decorative function of coated steel sheets, the mechanical performance of the surface needs to be improved significantly. In fact the wear resistance should be enhanced without affecting the optical appearance of the coatings by using appropriate nanoparticulate additives. In this direction, nanocomposite coating compositions (Nanomer$^{(R)}$) have been derived from water-based polymer dispersions with an increasing amount of surface-modified nanoparticles in aqueous dispersion in order to monitor the effect of degree of filling with rigid nanoparticles. The surface of nanoparticles has been modified for optimum compatibility with the polymer matrix in order to achieve homogeneous nanoparticle dispersion over the matrix. This approach has been extended in such a way that a more expanded hybrid network has been condensed on the nanoparticle surface by a hydrolytic condensation reaction in addition to the quasi-monolayer type small molecular surface modification. It was expected that this additional modification will lead to more intensive cross-linking in coating systems resulting in further improved scratch-resistance compared to simple addition of nanoparticles with quasi-monolayer surface modification. The resulting compositions have been coated on zinc-galvanized steel and cured. The wear resistance and the corrosion protection of the modified coating systems have been tested in dependence on the compositional change, the type of surface modification as well as the mixing conditions with different shear forces. It has been found out that for loading levels up to 50 wt.-% nanoparticles, the mechanical wear resistance remains almost unaffected compared to the unmodified resin. In addition, the corrosion resistance remained unaffected even after $180^{\circ}$ bending test showing that the flexibility of coating was not decreased by nanoparticle addition. Electron microscopy showed that the inorganic nanoparticles do not penetrate into the organic resin droplets during the mixing process but rather formed agglomerates outside the polymer droplet phase resulting in quite moderate cross linking while curing, because of viscosity. The proposed mechanisms of composite formation and cross linking could explain the poor effect regarding improvement of mechanical wear resistance and help to set up new synthesis strategies for improved nanocomposite morphologies, which should provide increased wear resistance.

The product-user interface for consumer electronic products became complex due to the increased variety of functions corresponding to consumer needs. In this study, three types fo design improvement of the menu interface for a video cassette recorder is studied. Three modifications to an existing menu interface was designed using the semantic, the syntactic and the lexical design factors. A series of the validation experiments was performed to test the effect of the three types of task modifications. The results showed that performance time, number of errors and learning effect were improved for all task modification. It also showed that the performance improvement effect of the semantic factors was 8.8%, that of the syntactic factors was 5.9% and that of the lexical factors was 5.6% respectively. It was found out that the performance improvement effect of the semantic design factors were relatively more significant than the syntactic and the lexical design factors.
For the same configuration of two-dimensional finite element models, 6-node element exhibits stiffer bending stiffness than 8-node element. This is true in the relation between 16-node element and 20-node element for three-dimensional model. This stiffening phenomenon comes from the elimination of several mid nodes from full-node elements. Therefore, this may be called 'relative stiffness stiffening phenomenon'. It seems that there are a couple of ways to correct the stiffening effect, however, we could find only one effective method-the method of modification of Gauss sampling points-which passes the patch test and does not alter other kinds of stiffness, such as extensional stiffness. The quantity of modification is a function of Poisson's ratios of the constituent materials. We could obtain two modification equations, one for plane stress case and the other for plane strain case. This method can be extended to 3-dimensional solid elements. Except the exact plane strain cases, most 3-dimensional plates could be modeled successfully with 16-node element modified by the equation for the plane stress case. The effectiveness of the modification method is checked by applying it to several examples with excellent improvements. In numerical examples, beams with various boundary conditions are subjected to static and time-dependent loads. Free and forced motion analyses of beams and plates are also tested. The beam and plate may be composed of isotropic multilayers as well as a single layer.

This paper examines the effect of star-entertainer imitation on female high school students in terms of their appearance management activities such as school uniform modification behaviors, hair style care behaviors, and make-up behaviors. For this research, data of 379 female high school students living in Jeollabuk-do was analyzed through reliability analysis, factorial analysis, cluster analysis, one-way analysis of variance, and cross-tabulation analysis. In the research, based on the type of star-entertainer imitation, the female high school students were divided into three categories: active followers, psychological followers, and passive followers. The research showed that active followers, who exhibited imitation behavior most frequently and had the highest imitation desire, were most frequently involved in school uniform modification. Inclined to imitate the school uniform styles of star-entertainers in soap operas, they modified their school uniforms. The active followers were also enthusiastic about hair care, were well aware of trendy hair styles, and demonstrated a fondness for star-entertainer hair styles. In addition, they were actively involved in make-up activities. They put on basic make-up everyday and exhibited a desire to learn about make-up styles. However, passive followers, who showed the least frequent imitation behavior and the lowest imitation desire, were not as keenly involved in school uniform modification behaviors, hair style care behaviors, or make-up behaviors. The study concludes that by providing teenagers with systematic education on desirable mass media and educating them on proper behavior, an effective educational tool for guidance on clothing habits can be derived.
This paper proposes a method of time-scale modification of polyphonic audio signals based on a sinusoidal model. The signals are modeled with sinusoidal component and noise component. A multiresolution filter bank is designed which splits the input signal into six octave-spaced subbands without aliasing and sinusoidal modeling is applied to each subband signal. To alleviate smearing of transients in time-scale modification a dynamic segmentation method is applied to subbands which determines the analysis-synthesis frame size adaptively to fit time-frequency characteristics of the subband signal. For extracting sinusoidal components and calculating their parameters matching pursuit algorithm is applied to each analysis frame of subband signal. In accordance with spectrum analysis a psychoacoustic model implementing the effect of frequency masking is incorporated with matching pursuit to provide a resonable stop condition of iteration and reduce the number of sinusoids. The noise component obtained by subtracting the synthesized signal with sinusoidal components from the original signal is modeled by line-segment model of short time spectrum envelope. For various polyphonic audio signals the result of simulation shows suggested sinusoidal modeling can synthesize original signal without loss of perceptual quality and do more robust and high quality time-scale modification for large scale factor because of representing transients without any perceptual loss.
The methods controlling the confounding factors were discussed using the data of secondary infertility with induced abortion. Mantel-Haenszel method and logistic model were applied in the analysis to find out which factors were confounding and/or effect modification variables. In the logistic analysis, the main effect of induced abortion, spontaneous abortion, age and interaction effect between induced abortion and spontaneous abortion were chosen as independent variables being regressed into logistic functions. Spontaneons abortion was interpreted as a potential confounder and at the same time potential effect modifier and age was interpreted as potential confounder. Spontaneous abortion was shown to be more important influencing factor than age to the secondary infertility. In the course of logistic analysis, the problem of parameter estimation and hypothesis testing, assessing the fitness of a model, and selection of the best model were briefly explained. For the program of logistic model, FUNCAT Procedure of SAS package was chosen.

This paper describes the development process of mosquito trap with the effect of air cleaning by using the substance-field analysis and evolution pattern of systems in the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ). By the concept of standard solution about introducing S3 substance, modification of S1 (human) and S2 (mosquito) between first substance SI and second substance S2 with harmful effect, we got the concept of the mosquito trap with mosquito attractants instead of mosquito reluctants such as mosquito stick coil and skin medicine w~th bad and toxic smell. The number of mosquitos traped by one trap near cattle shed per one n~ght in summer, was over 10 thousands with some effects of air cleaning.

A modified equation for the evaluation of discomfort of a seated human body exposed to differential vibration at the seat and the floor was proposed in this paper. Through the review and analysis of the preceding studies, effect of phase difference between the seat and the floor vibration on discomfort were quantitatively identified. The phase effect was shown to be governed by not only phase difference between the two vibrations but both their frequency and the magnitude, which means the present equation for the evaluation of perceptual amount of vibration provided by ISO 2631-1 should be modified. The proposed equation was developed such that the correction function was multiplied to the present equation. The correction function consisted of three parts, each of them represented the effect by phase difference, frequency and vibration magnitude on discomfort respectively.
