Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the time and content of dietary education by analyzing the physiological indicators of hemodialysis patients during their first year and to present baseline data related to dietary education for patients on hemodialysis. Methods: For this retrospective study physiological indicators for 73 patients on hemodialysis were analyzed. Data included levels of potassium, phosphorus, albumin and the IDWG rate, and Kt/V during the first year after starting hemodialysis. Repeated-measure ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Results: Serum levels of phosphorus (p<.006), albumin (p<.001) and the IDWG rate (p<.001) increased significantly in the 7 months from the start of hemodialysis. Conclusion: The results indicate that the period in which diet related educational intervention is necessary is before physiological changes, that is, after 6 months of dialysis. The contents for effective education should include phosphorus-limited and weight control dietary restrictions at 6 months.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate perception and satisfaction with Health Education for elementary school students in grade 5 and 6, using data on national health education gathered since March, 2009. Methods: Data were collected by way of a questionnaire, from 475 elementary school students in grades 5 and 6 from February 1~15, 2010. Statistical analysis of collected data was performed using frequency, t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis, using SPSS 18.0 software. Result: Levels of health promoting behavior, interest, importance, and satisfaction were relatively high, respectively, and those of students in grade 5 were higher than those of students in grade 6. Levels of Satisfaction with frequency and educational environment were relatively low. Among the factors found to influence satisfaction with health education, interest in health education was found to be the most influential(grade 5:${\beta}$=.279, p<.001, grade 6:${\beta}$=.306, p<.001). Conclusion: Students expressed a high level of satisfaction with regular health education. Expansion of health education frequency and health education-only-classrooms is needed. To improve the effect of health education, constant acquisition of knowledge of subjects' perception and satisfaction is needed. In addition, contents and teaching methods that showed low level of satisfaction should be reformed.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to examine knowledge level of human papillomavirus (HPV), cervical cancer, and vaccination status among Korean mothers' with a daughter in high school. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with a convenience sample of 234 Korean mothers. Results: The mean score of HPV knowledge level was 4.21 out of 20, and cervical cancer knowledge was 3.88 out of 7. There were low levels of daughters' who received HPV vaccination (3.8%) and high levels of mothers' intention to get their daughters' vaccinated with HPV (85.0%). The major barrier to HPV vaccination was the concern for side effect from the vaccination. The most effective recommendation for HPV vaccination came from health care providers. Conclusion: HPV educational programs targeting mothers of daughters in high school is needed. Future studies need to determine actual HPV vaccination rates and factors related to high uptake using a larger sample from various socioeconomic background.
This study explores the mobility patterns of Korean Early Study Aborad (ESA, hereafter) students in Singapore through a follow-up longitudinal case study, which was initially conducted about five years before this study. This study takes up transnational migration approach, focusing on family strategies and mobilization, which steered their mobility. Interviews with seven original families as well as 7 families additionally recruited in Singapore in 2012 were collected and analyzed by NVivo 9. In short, this study found that transnational mobility is composed of mobilities at global, regional and local levels. There were four types of mobilities; continuation of stay in Singapore, move from a third county to Singapore, return to Korea, and, what this research calls, fluid mobility. Examining the process of these mobilities shows that we need to consider at least three factors (performance of children's schooling; change of family circumstances; context of reception for both Singapore and Korea) as basic backgrounds. On this basis, the interplay between the context of receptions when aspirations for children's advancement by these transnational families made either facilitate or constrain their mobilities: contexts of Singapore and Korea may play a role of hurdle or trampoline. Also, local context of Singapore largely facilitate mobilities of Korean ESA families at both local and global levels.
Objective: The present study examined long-term effects of media use during early childhood on grit in middle childhood, focusing on the mediating role of attention problems. Methods: For statistical analysis, the 6th, 7th, and 11th data sets from the Panel Study on Korean Children were used. A total of 1,352 cases were finally selected. Descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, path analysis, and bootstrapping were conducted. Results: The results showed that the use of media for educational purposes in early childhood did not have a significant effect on attention problems and grit. However, when the media use time for play in early childhood was longer, levels of attention problems in early childhood were higher and levels of grit in middle childhood were lower. The mediating effect of attention problems on the relationship between media use time for play of young children and grit of middle childhood was significant. Conclusion/Implications: Findings of the present study suggest that the use of media for play during early childhood needs to be carefully monitored because it can have a negative effect on attention and grit development.
This study evaluated the engineering students' ethical sensitivity to an AI emotion recognition robot scenario and explored its characteristics. For data collection, 54 students (27 majoring in Convergence Electronic Engineering and 27 majoring in Computer Software) were asked to list five factors regarding the AI robot scenario. For the analysis of ethical sensitivity, it was checked whether the students acknowledged the AI ethical principles in the AI robot scenario, such as safety, controllability, fairness, accountability, and transparency. We also categorized students' levels as either informed or naive based on whether or not they infer specific situations and diverse outcomes and feel a responsibility to take action as engineers. As a result, 40.0% of students' responses contained the AI ethical principles. These include safety 57.1%, controllability 10.7%, fairness 20.5%, accountability 11.6%, and transparency 0.0%. More students demonstrated ethical sensitivity at a naive level (76.8%) rather than at the informed level (23.2%). This study has implications for presenting an ethical sensitivity evaluation tool that can be utilized professionally in educational fields and applying it to engineering students to illustrate specific cases with varying levels of ethical sensitivity.
The purpose of this study is to find a way to improve digital textbooks for self-regulated learning by applying cognitive scaffolding designs to an elementary math digital textbook and examining the effectiveness of the system. Hence this study was conducted in two steps. First, a framework for scaffolding design was devised by examining the problems and difficulties students encounter when using a mathematics digital textbook. Second, after the digital textbook was revised by applying the scaffolding design frameworks, the effectiveness of the scaffolding framework was examined by comparing students' achievement levels in an experimental group and that of students in a control group. Seventy fifth-graders participated in this study. Students were divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group. The students in the experimental group studied with the revised version of the digital textbook and the students in the control group studied with the original version of the digital textbook. The students received a pretest before the experiment. After the experiment, they took an achievement test and completed a usability questionnaire. The data were analyzed by ANCOVA with the SPSS Windows version. The results revealed that the students who used the revised program (to which design strategies for scaffolding were applied) showed higher levels of achievement than those who used the original version. In addition, students in the experimental group generally showed higher scores on the usability survey, which consisted of four sub-categories such as 'effectiveness', 'efficiency', 'satisfaction', and 'learnability'. There was a statistically significant effect on 'efficiency'. These results implied that scaffolding strategies were effective for mathematics learning through the use of an elementary digital textbook.
Problem-solving ability is one of the most important learning outcomes for students to compete and accomplish in a knowledge-based society. It has been empirically proven that visualization plays a central role in problem-solving. The best performing problem-solver might have a strong visualization tendency. However, there is little research as to what factors of visualization tendency primarily related to problem-solving ability according to phases of problem-solving. The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between visualization tendency and problem-solving ability, to determine which factors of visualization tendency influence problem-solving ability in each phase of problem-solving, and to examine different problem-solving ability from the perspective of the levels of visualization tendency. This study has found out that visualization tendency has a significant correlation with problem-solving ability. Especially, Generative Visualization and Spatial-Motor Visualization as sub-visualization tendency were more strongly related to each phase of problem-solving. It indicates that visualization tendency to generate and operate mental processing can be considered a major cognitive skill to improve problem-solving ability. Furthermore, students who have high visualization tendency also have significantly higher problem-solving ability than students with low visualization tendency. It shows that the levels of visualization tendency can predict variables related to students' problem-solving ability.
Purpose: This is a study to confirm the mediating effect of positive psychological capital in the relationship between the self-determination and grit of nursing students. Methods: The subjects of the study were 122 university nursing department students in their junior and senior years. The data were collected from December 1 to 23, 2022. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U-test, Pearson's correlation, and a hierarchical multiple regression analysis using IBM SPSS statistics version 26.0. Results: A statistically significant correlation was observed between self-determination, positive psychological capital and grit (p<.001). The positive psychological capital had full mediation effects on the relationship between self-determination and grit. In other words, the higher levels of positive psychological capital were associated with better levels of grit among nursing students. Conclusion: The study showed that positive psychological capital and self-determination have important effects on grit. To enhance the grit of nursing students, it is essential to implement educational programs aimed at improving self-determination and positive psychological capital.
Young black men(YBM) have the most severs levels of high blood pressure(HBP) and, in all reports but one, the lowest of HBP control of any age /sex /race group. To increase entry into care, remaining in care, and BP control for young(18-49 years) Black men, It is needed to review socio-demographic, medical characteristics, and behaviors(importance of and difficulty with HBP control behaviors, or worry about mdication) for experimental intervention study(educational- behavior strategies) of hypertensive urban young black men. The 204 participants had an average age of 38.8+7.0 years and an average educational level of $11.0{\pm}2.4$ years; only 23.1% were employed full- or part-time while 26% were on disability ; and 6% were married. Only 35.3% had an MD for HBP care and 37.3% had some form of health insurance. The average BP of those men currently being in care on medication(35.3%) was $148.2/95.1{\pm}19.5/11.3$ compared to those men not taking HBP care $153.7/99.1{\pm}14.0/9.8(p<.05)$. The average creatinine level was 1.3(excluding 3 marked elevations of 15.9, 9.6, and 7.7) for the 163 men consenting to have their blood drawn. Self-reported co-morbidity induded heart disease 7.8%, diabetes 8.9%, high cholesterol 18.2%, CVA 3.4%, alcohol and drug related problems 27.9% and 22.5% respectively. The kidney disease of those men currently being in care & on medication was 9.7 compared to those men not taking HBP care 0.8(p<.05). The problems of with sex life, physicl activity and dearly thinking of those men currently being in care & on medication was higher compared to those men not taking HBP care(p<.05). Questions of 'during the past month, on how many days did you have 5 or more drinks (bottles) of any alcoholic beverag?' and smoking of those men currently being in care & on medication was 18.1% and 72.2% compared to those men not taking HBP care 27.3 and 82.6%, respectively. HBP control behaviors was assessed with 1-5 point Likert subscales(5=extreme, 1-none at all), In general, th men reportd low levels of perceived psychological barrier to HBP care and control behaviors; importance of and difficulty with HBP control behaviors, or worry about mdication. For example, on a five point scale(1=none at all, 5=extreme), average ratings for perceived important and difficulty with BP care and behaviors were 2.8(SD=1.2) and 2.5(SD=1.1). Average ratings for perceived benefit with BP care and behaviors worry about medication of those men currently being in care on medication was 4.0(SD=0.9) and 2.2(SD=1.1) compared to those men not taking HBP care 3.6(SD=0.8), 2.8 (SD=1.6) respectively(p<.05). These data support the need for educational-behavioral strategies of community health nurse to improve high blood pressure control in this high risk group through perceived barriers to treatment, health care skills and use of resources, and social support.
