  • The monitoring of phytoplankton biomass and community structure is essential as a first step to control the harmful cyanobacterial blooms in freshwater systems, such as seen in rivers and lakes, due to the process of eutrophication and climate change. In order to quantify the biomass of phytoplankton with a wide range in size and shape, the measurement of cell biovolume along with cell density is required for a comprehensive review on this issue. However, most routine monitoring programs preserve the gathered phytoplankton samples before analysis using chemical additives, because of the constraint of time and the number of samples. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cell biovolume change characteristics of six cyanobacterial species, which are common bloom-causing cyanobacteria in the Nakdong River, after the preservation with Lugol's iodine solution. All species showed a statistically significant difference after the addition of Lugol's iodine solution compared to the live cell biovolume, and the cell biovolume decreased to the level of 34.0 ~ 56.3 % at maximum in each species after the preservation. The nonlinear regression models for determining the shrinkage ratio by a preservation period were derived by using the cell biovolume measured until 180 days preservation of each target species, and the equation to convert the cell biovolume measured after preservation for a certain period to the cell biovolume of viable cell was derived using that formula. The conversion equation derived from this study can be used to estimate the actual cell biovolume in the natural environment at the time of sampling, by using the measured biovolume after the preservation in the phytoplankton monitoring. Moreover this is expected to contribute to the final interpretation of the water quality and aquatic ecosystem impacts due to the cyanobacterial blooms.

  • Demand for high quality medical care has recently been increasing in step with high level of income and education. Patients prefer the use of large general hospitals to small community hospitals. Large hospitals, usually located at urban area, expand their capacities to cope with the increasing demand, therefore, they easily secure revenue necessary for growth and development of hospitals. However, small community hospitals are facing with serious financial difficulties caused from the reduction of patients in one hand and the inflation of cost in another. If small rural hospitals were closed, the closure would have negative impacts on local economies in addition to the decrease in access to medical care. Community leaders should have an insight on the contribution of community hospitals to local economies. They could make a rational decision on the hospital closure only with the understanding of hospital's contribution to the community. This study is designed to develop an economic model to estimate the contribution of rural hospital to local economies, and also to apply this model with a specific hospital. The contribution of a hospital to local economies consists of two elements, direct effect and multiplier effects. The direct impacts include hospital's local purchasing power, employee's local purchasing power, and the consumption of patients coming from outside the community. The direct impact induces multiplication effect in the local economy. The seed money invested to other industries grows through economic activities in the region. This study estimated the direct effect with the data of expenditure of the case hospital. The total effect was calculated by multiplied the direct effect with a multiplier. The multiplier was drown from the ratio of marginal propensity of income and expenditure. Beside the estimation of the total impacts, the economic effect from the external resources was also analyzed by the use of the ratio of patients coming outside the region. The results are as follows. 1. The direct economic contribution of the hospital to the local economy is 1,104 million won. 2. The value of multiplier in the region is 2.976. 3. The total economic effect is 3,286 million won, and the multiplication effect is 2,182 million won. 4. The economic contribution from the external resources is 245 million won which is 7.5% of the total economic effect.

  • Recently, the HACCP(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) system has been emphasized in food processing industries throughout the world. However, the system has, as yet, not been applied very well to domestic food industries. Due to the increase in the consumption of bakery products, more studies are required on the application of HACCP to establish the system in small-scale bakeries. This study was designed to provide basic data for setting management standards for HACCP, based on microbiological hazard evaluations of bakery products. Red bean paste filled breads, custard cream filled breads and cakes covered with fresh whipping cream were collected, and microbiological evaluations conducted on the raw materials, the manufacturing processes and potential hazards. The result showed the presence of coliforms in fresh cream of cakes and the soybean paste of soybean paste breads at levels as high as 105 CFU/g on the hazard analysis of the raw materials. Moreover, the general levels of bacteria and coliforms were over those of the standards during the intermediate fermentation and molding processes. Furthermore, high levels of coliforms were detected on the hands of the salesmen and bakers themselves. This suggests that the CCPs (Critical Control Points), such as fresh cream and red bean paste manufacturing process desperately require better management. There is also a requirement for education relating to personal hygiene for the production of hygienic bakery products and for the publics health.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the sanitation management of school foodstuffs and the sanitation knowledge of delivery company workers. A questionnaire that identified employee's food safety sanitation management, knowledge, and practices was developed based on a review of the literature. The subjects consisted of 201 delivery company workers from 38 delivery companies in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk area. The workers were 30-39 years of age (41.3%) with 1-3 years of working experience (30.8%). Approximately 62% of the respondents were educated and had 1-2 years of food safety experience, 52.7% of the respondents delivered foodstuffs to two schools in the morning. The total score for delivery company worker sanitation knowledge was 3.75/7.00, which was low. The total mean sanitary performance score for factory workers was 4.58/5.00. They indicated that the most difficult part of the operation is delivering on time. Temperature management was another difficulty. In order to secure the best quality of school food to be supplied safely, the thorough sanitation education must be conducted to the school dieticians and delivery company managers.

  • As the quality of life has been improving, people are getting higher interest and higher expectation for safety. However, the accident rate at the construction site is still high. Therefore, it is urgent to secure the safety at the construction work. Due to the nature of the construction industry, construction sites are directly exposed to the external environment. The possibility of accident occurrence is increased due to various factors such as the always variable processes, the diversity of manpower input, the increase in vulnerable class, and the danger of construction equipment..Particularly, the disasters occurring at the small- or medium-sized construction sites (budget ≤ 12 billion KRW) account for 88.9% of the total disasters at construction sites (73.4% for casualty). It was due to the lack of management caused by the absence of supervisors and insufficient safety measures. Moreover, it is difficult for the small- or medium-sized construction sites to apply basic safety measures such as safety education and safety facility installation by themselves in order to prevent disasters because they don't have sufficient safety organizations. It is because they have relatively less safety personnel and poorer technology system than large-sized construction sites. Therefore, in order to reduce accidents in construction, it is necessary to prevent accidents at the small- and medium-sized construction sites. From this point of view, the objectives of this study were to identify the key risk items causing accidents frequently by analyzing the accidents at construction sites and identifying problems associated with safety management, and to secure the safety at the small- and medium-sized construction sites.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a psycho-educational group intervention in reducing psychologic distress and enhancing coping in Korean breast cancer patients. The patient selection criteria were age younger than 70 years, having any postoperative adjuvant therapy, and surgery undergone within the previous 12 months as of the start of the study and there were 70 patients eligible for this criteria. They were randomized into three groups; experimental group(24 patients), wait-list control group(24 patients) and wait-list group(36 patients). We conducted a 8-week, structured, psychosocial group intervention, which used psycho-educational strategies combining education and psychological support. Subjects were assessed for psychological distress and coping by administering the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and the Ways of Coping Checklist-Revised(WCCL-R) at the baseline and after 8 weeks. Forty eight patients were participated and thirty five patients completed the study. The experimental group had significantly lower scores than the controls for depression on the BDI(p=.012) after 8-week intervention. However, coping did not show a significant difference on WCCL-R after the intervention. Despite of some limitations, the results of this study suggest that a short term psychosocial group intervention produces a significant improvement in the quality of life of patients with primary breast carcinoma in Korea in terms of managing depression.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether senior simulation would bring any positive change to the attitude of dental hygiene students toward the elderly. The experimental group consisted of 58 dental hygiene students at a college. The experimental procedure was to do activities for 40 minutes wearing aging simulation suit. Self administered questionnaires were used to ask the attitude toward the elderly after senior simulation. The data were analyzed with SPSS program. General and aging related characteristics of subjects were analyzed through descriptive statistics. To testify the differences of the attitude after senior simulation, paired t-test was used. An experiment was conducted from May 27 to June 14, 2012, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. There wasn't any perfect positive change in the overall attitude of the students toward elderly people after senior simulation, but their attitude got a little more positive whereas they took a neutral attitude in the past; 2. The students who had ever lived with elderly people under the same roof and who had ever received education related to the elderly underwent a more positive change in their attitude toward the elderly; 3. To what extent senior simulation was helpful for the understanding of the elderly was checked, and the majority replied that it was very useful or useful for the understanding of their physical aspects. The findings of the study confirmed that senior simulation didn't change the overall attitude of the students toward the elderly in a positive way yet brought about some positive changes in part. Therefore senior simulation is expected to be one of significant educational programs that could encourage students to have a better physical understanding of the elderly, to take a more positive attitude to them and to provide them with quality dental service.

  • The characteristics of performing arts differ from those of utilitarian goods in terms of economics. Factors other than price need to be considered to understand the demand for performing arts. Audience surveys as well as econometric demand studies have confirmed that socio-economic factors such as age, income, employment, and education are major determinants of the demand for performing arts. This study focused on the attributes of concerts rather than consumer characteristics to determine the concerts audiences select in terms of transaction cost. Genre, price, internet search trends, and the purpose of performance as well as price are tested as determinants of demand by using the data set for a major concert hall in Seoul. Genre and the specific purpose of concerts influence the demand for concerts. Internet search trends of the performer are used as indicators of popularity and information exposure, which are positively correlated with demand. This result supports the hypothesis that larger audiences would attend concerts that require lower information search costs. To note, price has a positive effect on demand in the higher price range, which means that concerts at higher prices attract larger audiences, whereas normal goods have a negative slope in the demand curve. This result can be explained by the hypothesis that consumers use price as an indicator of the quality expected of a concert. Transaction cost for selecting classical concerts thus forms an inverse-U shape curve against ticket price. These results provide some explanation of why audiences of classical music choose to attend concerts at high ticket prices while offering evidence in favor of the hypothesis that performing arts are selected in a social context.

  • The problem is that even though the cost of apartment buildings and general expenses are the same and similar tasks, there is a significant gap between them in quantity and quality. The apartment security guard needs more professional management in education and various reporting obligations. In particular, the reality of being away from the management and supervision of the National Police Agency, which is in charge of crime prevention and policing resources throughout the nation, is a task that needs to be improved quickly. Although the "security service" is a specialized area for protecting the lives and property of the people, it is managed and operated only in the category of apartment management, just because it is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. This should be integrated into one cost-related law, such as the "Cost Business Act," for management and operation. Although the regulations concerning security guards under the "Joint Housing Management Act" are very limited, they should start discussing the integrated management of apartment security guards and general security guards in view of improvement of their treatment. The most realistic method would be to hire a new general security officer with a security law as a security guard in an apartment building.

  • Domestic casino companies strongly demand their employees to provide high quality customer services for improving customer's satisfaction and to minimize customer's complain to achieve organizational objective. This seriously influences the job stress, job satisfaction and turnover of employees. However, ongoing management is necessary for job satisfaction and turnover intention of employees because which are related to organizational effectiveness and factors able to maximize the profit. In this study, we examined the influence and causal relationship of job stress from emotional labor of employees on job satisfaction and turnover intention of employees. As a result, job stress had a full mediating effect in the relationship between emotional labor, job satisfaction and turnover intention. It was confirmed that emotional labor of casino employees could cause job stress and further influence job satisfaction and turnover intention. In order to reduce job stress and improve job satisfaction, we propose the improvement of overall human management structure and company environment of casino companies. Emotional education such as emotional regulation ability, empathy, and interpersonal skills should be strengthened to reduce job stress from emotional labor, and the self-esteem program will be helpful to casino employees to maintain the emotional positiveness and maximize their working abilities.
