  • It is highly useful in an actual clinical setting to apply appropriate medical terms to every area of electronic medical record (EMR) and link them effectively, as a single medical terminology system cannot cover all medical concepts. In order to use standardized terms conveniently and efficiently, it is required to categorize them depending on the purpose of individual departments or physicians and thereby develop organized subsets of extracted terms highly likely to be used. In addition, it is important to such a subset to make it possible to change or correct standardized terminology system and continue to develop and upgrade to meet renewed demands of users. In this paper, data including chief compliant, symptoms, diagnosis, operation, and history of previous treatments were collected from discharge summary of patients with Department of Neurosurgery at Busan National University Hospital for analysis. In addition, subset database was created, and for terms needed to be added, the physician directly performed mapping through connection with reference terminology server and developed subset editor for the purpose of creating new subset database. Therefore, it is expected that this can serve as a practical and effective management method to reduce problems and inefficiency caused by existing vast terminology system.

  • This presentation highlights the IAHR book, recently published last April, of which the author is the editor-in-chief, on the historical water projects and traditional water technologies of international interest in the Asian region, addressing information on past water projects (mostly before the 20th century) in the regions that are technically and culturally of interest and educationally valuable. The book explores historical water projects in these regions, presenting technologies used at the time, including calculation and forecasting methods, measurement, material, labor, methodologies, and even water culture. Through this book, it is expected that the old Asian wisdom of "reviewing the old and learning the new" would be realized to a certain extent in modern planning and practice of water projects. The book comprises a lead article that the presenter authored and five Parts representing China, Japan, Korea, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, respectively, followed by an invited one from Uzbekistan. Throughout the book, it is found that historically the Asian monsoon, affecting the Indian subcontinent and Southeast and East Asian regions, induced rice cultivation. It fundamentally needs proper irrigation systems, including reservoirs (dams) and canals, water wheels, and even rain gauges. Flood risks have been more common in Asia than Europe under this climate condition, as recognized in history. To utilize and sometimes overcome these climate conditions, people built and managed many historical and grandiose water projects and invented and used localized but sophisticated water-related technologies in the Asian region.

  • Journal of the Korean Meteorological Society (JKMS) is confronted by a huge challenge. Following the long-term plan of the Korean Meteorological Society (KMS), the JKMS has entered a new era in 2006 in the sense that the all papers are published in English. Tremendous efforts are needed to accomplish the original goal of JKMS becoming an internationally recognized journal. A forum was held in this connection with the subject of the vitalization of the JKMS at the Spring Meeting of the Korean Meteorological Society held at Gwangju, 2006. A number of special topics were presented at the forum and active and vigorous discussions followed. Professor Dong-Kyou Lee presented strategies to increase the number of submission to the JKMS. Professor Seon Ki Park gave a presentation on how JKMS can grow into the SCI journal. The Editor-in-Chief of JKMS, professor H. Joe Kwon introduced the on-line review system of JKMS which had launched in 2006. This manuscript is presented on the basis of the presentations and the discussions at the forum for the purpose of finding the way in aiming the direction of the long-term goal of the KMS.

  • In the circumstances of overflowing numbers of medical journals, progress of their own medical journal is one of the primary concerns of many medical societies. Among the 46-year-history of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society (JKNS), it undertook a period of important transition and preparation to take off for journal with international reputation during the period from 2001 to 2006. The overall process of manuscript handling, peer review, and editorial work has undergone systematic improvement. Workshops for authors, reviewer and editors were held, which were very helpful to improve the quality of submitted manuscript, peer review and editorial processing. Articles on the history, current status of the JKNS, citations and the change of proportion of types of articles were published, which provided insight about present condition and direction for further progress. It was changed into English journal in 2005. These efforts resulted in registration of the journal Chemical Abstract Service in 2005 and Science Citation Index Expanded in 2008 and SCOPUS in 2009. Now JKNS has become international journal, with about half of the submitted manuscripts from abroad, with increasing impact factor. Along with the effort of Korean Neurosurgical Society (KNS) members and support of KNS, dedication of Professor Dong Gyu Kim for the progress of JKNS is worth remembering, who served as Editor-in-Chief of JKNS during this period.
