Effect of Shading Level on Growth and Morphological Characteristics of Ligularia fischeri Seedling (차광수준이 곰취 유묘의 생장 및 형태적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to survey the early growth characteristics of Ligularia fischeri, plants of half-shaded grounds, primarily used as functional wild edible greens and examine its shading treatment to transplant seedling. The shading treatment was regulated with the shading level(full sunlight, 35%, 50%, 75%, and 95% of full sunlight). According to the experiment, the height was the highest under 75% of shading (17.3 cm), and root diameter was the highest under full sunlight (2.13 mm). It was found that fresh weight (leaf, shoot, root and whole) was the highest (1.784 g, 1.330 g, 0.791 g, 3.905 g respectively ) under 50% of shading. In case of dry weight, leaf, shoot and whole dry weight were surveyed the highest under 35% of shading, and root dry weight was the highest under full sunlight. It was found that S/R ratio and moisture contents (leaf, shoot, root and whole) were the highest under 95% of shading. Leaf area was the highest under 50% of shading ($39.3cm^2$) and the higher shading level, the higher SLA and LAR. It was surveyed that the higher shading level, the thinner leaf thickness. In case of root characteristics, it was showed that the relatively high height growth under 35%~75% of shading, excepting 95% of shading. As a result of surveying the whole experiment, it is concluded that the early growth of L. fischeri is more effective in producing it under 50% of shading.

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects on Optimal Extraction Conditions of Different Edible Parts of Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) (들깨 가식부위별 최적 추출 조건 확립을 위한 항산화 및 항염증 활성 평가)

  • This study was performed to investigate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of perilla(Perilla frutescens L.) seed, flower and leaf according to extraction condition. Perilla seed extracts(PSE), perilla flower extracts(PFE), perilla leaf extracts(PLE) was extracted by stirring extraction (STE, 25℃), shaking extraction (SHE, 80℃), and sonication assisted extraction(SAE, 25℃) with 94% ethanol, 60% ethanol and distilled water, followed by analysis of total polyphenol and flavonoid and testing radical scavenging activities. The highest total polyphenol content (5.47, 9.36, 38.58 mg gallic acid equivalent/g), total flavonoid content(5.77, 8.62, 46.44 mg catechin equivalent/g), ABTS(10.68, 19.46, 63.56 mg trolox equivalent/g) and DPPH(6.51, 7.69, 79.73 mg trolox equivalent/g) radical scavenging activity of PSE, PFE and PLE was observed in the HWE with 60% ethanol,. Among the three extraction method, SHE provided the best results for yield, polyphenol, flavonoid content of perilla seed, flower, leaf in comparison to STE or SAE. SHE with 60% ethanol of perilla seed, flower, leaf more effectively inhibited secretion of nitric oxide(NO) and pro-inflammatory cytokine in RAW 264.7 macrophage exposed to LPS compared to other extraction solvent and method. Therefore, these extracts obtained from perilla seed, flower, leaf could be used antioxidant and anti-inflammatory ingredients in the food industry.

The Regional Folk Plants in Inland of Gyeongsangbuk-do (I) (경상북도 내륙지역의 민속식물 I)

  • This study was carried out to classify the regional folk plants in the inland of Gyeongsangbuk-do. According to the survey results from 582 survey sheets of 126 residents at 85 places of 17 counties and cities from March to October, 2009, the folk plants in the inland of Gyeongsangbuk-do consisted of a total 254 taxa; 76 families, 207 genera, 225 species, 2 subspecies, 26 varieties, and 1 form. The use by its usage was: 216 taxa; edible, 82 taxa; medicinal, 30 taxa; dye, 3 taxa; aroma, 4 taxa; spice, 4 taxa; ornamental, 1 taxa; fiber, 2 taxa; oil, 1 taxa; starch, 5 taxa; fuel, 9 taxa; others, respectively, so the edible use is the highest. The most useful part was the leaf, followed by stem and root. The folk plants of 3 head families from Yeongyang and Cheongsong were 42 taxa. The consistency comparison between the scientific name and the local name were the highest in the 50's and the lowest in 80's.

The Folk Plants in Southern Region of Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea (충청북도 남부지역의 민속식물)

  • This study was carried out in order to catalogue the folk plants of 5 counties and cities of Chungcheongbuk-do Province from March to October, 2011. 429 pages of field notes relating to the folk plants were collected from approximately 92 local inhabitants and analyzed subsequently. The identified folk plants were of 173 taxa, composed of 150 species, 1 subspecies, 22 varieties and 129 genera under 56 families. Naturalized plants were included. The use by its usage was: 349 taxa; edible, 68 taxa; medicinal, 2 taxa; dye, 1 taxa; aroma, 4 taxa; spice, 1, taxa; ornamental, 3 taxa; oil, 1 taxa; starch, 18 taxa; others respectively, so the edible use is the highest. The most useful part was the leaf, followed by stem, and whole plant. The consistency comparison between the scientific name and the local name were the highest in the 50's and the lowest in 90's.

  • This study was carried out to classify the folk plants in inland of northern region of Gangwon-do. According to the survey results from 35 places of 9 counties and cities from April to October, 2010, the folk plants in inland of northern region of Gangwon-do consisted of a total 261 taxa; 73 families, 185 genera, 225 species, 2 subspecies, 30 varieties, and 4 form. Among the investigated 261 taxa, 3 Korean endemic, 11 rare plants and 9 naturalized plants were also included. The use by usage of 261 taxa was: 378 times; Edible, 53 times; Medicinal, 8 times; Dye, 7 times; Ornamental, 6 times; Fuel, 5 times; Spice, 3 times; Aroma, 2 times; Nectar, 41 times; Others, respectively, so the edible use is the highest. The most useful part was the leaf, followed by whole plant and root. The consistency comparison between the scientific name and the local name were the highest in the 20's and the lowest in 80's.

  • This study was carried out to classify the folk plants in southern region of Gangwon-do. According to the survey results from 1,103 survey sheets of 83 residents at 32 places of 9 counties and cities from March to October, 2010, the folk plants in the southern region of Gangwon-do consisted of a total 311 taxa; 92 families, 222 genera, 274 species, 2 subspecies, 29 varieties, and 6 form. The use by its usage was: 227 taxa; Edible, 174 taxa; Medicinal, 14 taxa; Ornamental, 5 taxa; Oil, 5 taxa; Spice, 4 taxa; Dye, 1 taxa; Fiber, 1 taxa; Aroma, 1 taxa; Fuel, 32 taxa; Others, respectively, so the edible use is the highest. Persistence and Dislodgeable Residues of Chlorpyrifos and Procymidone in Lettuce Leaves under Greenhouse Condition (상추의 생산단계별 Chlorpyrifos 및 Procymidone의 잔류허용기준 설정)

  • Two pesticides commonly used for lettuce cultivation including chlorpyrifos and procymidone were subjected to a field residue trial to ensure safety of terminal residues in the harvest. After pesticides were applied at standard and double rates in a foliar spray, leaf persistence of their residues was investigated far 10 days prior to harvest. Even though far exceeded the tolerances, initial leaf residues were rapidly dissipated with time and remained only 0.4$\sim$7.2% of the residues in the harvest. As well fitted by the first-order kinetics, biological half-lives of the pesticide residues in lettuce leaves ranged 1.2$\sim$2.6 days. Slow dissipation of the residues in the harvest was observed during storage at room temperature and 4$^{\circ}C$ for 7 days. Portions of dislodgeable residues which resided in detergent washings decreased as time elapsed. Patterns in dissipation and distribution of dislodgeable residues were not largely affected by the application rate of pesticides. It is concluded that timing of pesticide application, that is, pre-harvest interval would be the first factor to determine the terminal residue level in edible portions of lettuce.

An Edible Alginate Microcapsulation of Entomopathogenic Nematode, Steinernema carpocapsae (알지닌캡슐을 이용한 곤충병원선충(Steinernema carpocapsae)의 섭식유도형 제제화 기술)

  • Field application of the entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema carpncapsae, is limited by its susceptibility to UV irradiation and desiccation especially at leaf spray control. This study was conducted to develop the control technique using alginate biocapsulation of the nematodes against the beet armyworm, Spodoprera exigua and the tobacco cutworm, Sp. litura that are normally infesting hosts above ground level. The alginate capsules including infective juveniles gave significant feeding toxicities to the larvae of the two lepidopteran species. The lethality followed a typical sigmoid dose-mortality pattern with increase of the nematode densities embedded in the capsules. Moisture content in the capsule was critical to the survival of the infective juveniles. More than 80% nematodes could survive above 10% moisture content remained in the capsule. Remaining moisture content within the capsule was dependent on relative humidity, ambient temperature, and capsule size, but not on citric acid reaction time during capsule formation. More than 80% of infective juveniles in the alginate capsules could survive in distilled water at 15$^{\circ}C$ for 60 days. When these nematode capsules containing welsh onion extract as another phagostimulant were applied on the 3rd instar larvae of Sp. exigua infesting peanut plants, they resulted in about 90% control efficacy. These results indicate that the alginate capsulation can be used for leaf-spray agent of the entomopathogenic nematodes as well as for improved storage purpose.

Diversity and Function of Pigments in Colored Rice (유색미 색소의 종류와 기능)

  • The edible natural pigments extracted from plant organs become steadly popular to consumer because of those physiological functions desirable for food preservation and human health in recent years. There are a number of colored rice genotypes from light brown to blackish purple via reddish brown and purple. Some researchers reported their results on extraction recipes and identification of chemical structure of the pigments from the colored rice. The pigments extracted from colored rices can be largely divided into two types of anthocyanin and tannin pigments. Anthocyanin pigments are mainly contained in purple or blackish purple rice while tannin pigments are mainly contained in brown or reddish brown rice. Some brownish purple rices showed two peaks of tannin and anthocyanin pigments simultaneously. Purple rices showed better extraction of pigments in $0.1\%$ HCl-contained $80\%$ methanol or $0.5\%$ malic-acid-contained $80\%$ ethanol, while red rices revealed better extraction of pigments in $0.01\%$ citric-acid-contained $80\%$ ethanol. The anthocyanin pigments are generally unstable to heat, light and acidity of solution. The pigments extracted from colored rice can be preserved stably under the dark and cool(<$5^{\circ}C$) condition and at pH $2.0\~4.0$. The anthocyanin pigments of purple rice are mainly composed by cyanidin-3-glucoside (chrysanthemin). The other pigment fractions in purple rice were identified to peonidin-3-gluco-side, malvidin-3-galactoside(uliginosin) and cyanidin-3-ramnoglucoside(keracyanin). The pericarp coloration of purple rices is controlled by three complimentary genes C (anthocyanin), A(activator) and $Pl^{w}$(purple leaf) genes, while the red rices are expressed by complimentary interaction between Rc(basic substance of pigment) and Rd(distribution of pigment) genes or C and $Pl^{w}$ genes. Recently, the antioxidation and antimutagenic activity in main component of anthocyanin pigments extracted from colored rice were identified. The natural pigments from colored rice can be useful for beverages, cakes, ice scream, cosmetic and so on.

Analysis of Total Phenolic Content and Antioxidant Activity from Fruits of Vaccinium oldhamii Miq. (정금나무 열매의 총 페놀 함량 및 항산화활성 분석)

  • Vaccinium oldhamii Miq. is a Korean native tree, which is deciduous and shrub tree with broad leaf. To develop superior cultivars for edible or medicinal purposes, we evaluated total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Total phenolic content was measured by folin-denis method and antioxidant activity was measured by DPPH free radical scavenging activity (DPPH method) and reducing power (potassium ferricyanide method). Total phenolic content, DPPH free radical scavenging activity (at 400 ppm) and reducing power (at 700 ppm) were 15.8~19.9 mg/g, 69.1~91.4% and 0.56~0.96, respectively. A linear correlation was shown between DPPH-radical scavenging activity and reducing power (r=0969).
