  • In this paper, a development of an inductive position sensor is described. The sensor is similar to a radial magnetic bearing in that the sensor stator is shaped like a heteropolar magnetic bearing and is driven by a switching amplifier. A demodulation filter extracts the gap information from the switching current ripples. A prototype sensor exhibits the resolution of $0.43\mum$ and the dynamic bandwidth of about 800Hz. The dynamic performance can be improved by increasing the switching frequency. However, the eddy current effects become noticeable at high switching frequency, thus limiting the improvement of the bandwidth.

  • This paper proposes the concept of FlexPCB(flexible Printed Circuit Board) conductive structure for electrodynamic bearings. It has three main advantages: easy “printing” of considerably thin conductive wires, resulting in potential reduction in stray eddy currents; realization of specific conductive configurations with high precision to optimize the eddy current flowing; simplicity in being wound to cylinders or hollow cylinders of different diameters. To verify this new concept, the FlexPCB conductive structure was manufactured, an axial electrodynamic bearing test rig was built and the conductive structure's induced voltage was measured along the axial displacements from 0mm to 56mm at three rotating speeds. The finite element method was used to calcuatlate the flux density of electrodynamic bearing and induced voltage of the FlexPCB conductive structure. The experimental results are compared with the results from the FEM calculation. It is concluded that the measured and calculated induced voltages have consistency in the middle part of the bearing.

  • In this paper, we analyze the inductive interference in conductive material around power transmission line. To compute induced eddy currents as well as electromagnetic fields, finite element method(FEM) is used for numerical calculation. The characteristics of conductive material such as gas pipeline, overhead guide wires, conducting earth and so on are taken account of FEM analysis. This research also shows that mitigation wire reduces amount of eddy current in buried gas pipe line.

  • The need fur higher grid resolution in climate models is often discussed (e.g. McAvaney et al.,2001) because a number of important oceanic processes are not resolved by the current generation of coupled models, e.g., boundary currents, mesoscale eddy fluxes, sill through flows. McClean et al., (1997) and Bryan and Smith (1998) have compared simulated mesoscale variability in simulations at several eddy-resolving resolutions to TOPEX/Poseidon and similar data. (omitted)

  • Alternating current (AC) losses of two Bi-2223 ([Bi, Pb] : Sr : Ca : Cu :O = 2:2:2:3) tapes [one untwisted (Tape I, twist-pitch of $\infty$ mm) and the other with a twist-pitch of 8mm (Tape II) ] were measured and compared. These samples, produced by the powder-in-tube (PIT) method, are multi-filamentary and have a Ag/Au and Ag matrix, respectively. Susceptibility measurements were conducted while cooling in a magnetic field. Flux loss measurements were conducted as a function of ramping rate, frequency and field direction. The AC flux loss increases as the twist-pitch of the tapes decreased, in agreement with the Norris Equation.

  • By appliying an slternate pulsed magnetic field -generated by using a sequential ignition circuit and a magnet exciting circuit- with peak value of about 10 T to the rod type Nd based magnet Nd2Fe12.7Cr1.3B with length of 5 mm and diameter of 3.6 mm, the basic magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization, residual magnetization, coercivity, maximum energy products, magnetic anisotropy and anisotropic field are investigated with obtaining the major and minor J-H loops of the magnet. The increase in coercivity due to eddy currents in ac measurement of coercivity is calculated considering eddy current loss by analyzing a wave of generating magnetic field. The average coercivity calculated for the magnet is about 12.2 kOe, anisotropy magnetic field and anisotropic constant are measured as 60 kOe 2.43 Mj/$m^3$, respectively.

  • The current distribution in the source coil region is analyzed using the two dimensional finite element method. The variables in the FEM are the magnetic vector potentials and the source current density. The boundary condition for the source current density is that the total current is the sum of the eddy current and the source current and is known quantity from measurement. The simulation results are compared with the analytical solution. It is found that the method can analyze the current distribution in the source conductors very accurately.

  • A multiphase flow modeling approach equipped with a hybrid turbulence modeling method is applied to compute the gravity currents in a rectangular channel. The present multiphase solver considers the dense fluid, the less-dense ambient fluid and the air above free surface as three phases with separate flow equations for each phase. The turbulent effect is simulated by the IDDES (improved delayed detach eddy simulation), a hybrid RANS/LES, approach which resolves the turbulent flow away from the wall in the LES mode and models the near wall flow in RANS mode on moderately fine computational meshes. The numerical results show that the present model can successfully reproduce the gravity currents in terms of the propagation speed of the current heads and the emergence of large-scale Kelvin-Helmholtz type interfacial billows and their three dimensional break down into smaller turbulent structures, even on the relatively coarse mesh for wall-modeled RANS computation with low-Reynolds number turbulence model. The present solutions reveal that the modeling approach can capture the large-scale three dimensional behaviors of gravity current head accompanied by the lobe-and-cleft instability at affordable computational resources, which is comparable to the LES results obtained on much fine meshes. It demonstrates that the multiphase modeling method using the hybrid turbulence model can be a promising engineering solver for predicting the physical behaviors of gravity currents in natural environmental configurations.

  • In order to investigate the flow structures around Geumo archipelago on Southern Waters of Korea, water movements were measured for 25 hours during spring tide in May and neap tide in September 2002 using ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) attached to a running boat. Dominant directions of ebb and flood current at spring tide are SE-NW, representing the average flow rate of approximately 40cm/s in the surface layer. However because of the topographical reason, the direction and speed of the flow in the narrow waterway sea area around the northwest of Gae Island were different. There was no notable baroclinic component of tidal flow at spring tide. This indicates that the sea area has been actively engaged in vertical mixing due to island wake or eddy due to narrow waterways, shallow water depth and rapid flow rate around archipelago. At neap tide, dominant directions of tidal flows are SSE-NNW and the average flow rate in the surface layer is about 85 percent of the spring tide. The duration and intensity of the flow direction are shorter and less dominant than the spring tide. It is expected that asymmetrical tidal mixing will occur due to vertical velocity shear and horizontal eddies. From daily mean tidal flows obtained from the ADCP observation, it was found that the northwest of Gae Island have flows in NW~NE, the west of Geumo Island have the average currents of up to 21 cm/s WSW~SSW and counterclockwise circulation or eddy currents are formed in the west of Sori Island.
