Riparian vegetation distribution patterns and diversity relative to various fluvial geomorphic channel patterns, stream bank stabilization methods, and stream flow processes are described and interpreted for selected stream of Goesan, Central Korea. Idong Stream Pilot Project, which began in May 2003 and finished in December 2003, was selected to develop effective methods. The project aim to maintain or increase stream bank stabilization ecosystem goods and services while protecting downstream and stream bank ecosystem. A number of protecting methods which are a Flight of fieldstone, Vegetation block, Green river block, Stone net, Green environment block, Eco friendly cobble, Vegetation mat and Geo green cell and Firefly block were applied on the bank of Idong stream. The stream sites have been monitored about flora conditions each method in 2007. We selected 12 points for summer seasons to separately investigate in left bank, right bank and river bed. The main purpose of this study was to find out suitable methods and to improve stream restoration techniques for ecosystem. On the stream bank, Eco friendly cobble method(9.57) was the highest average of vegetation cover and Firefly block method(3.87) was the lowest average in applied methods.
Nanji-do is an island in Seoul, the area is 272ha, and in which gad was piled up waste discharged from Seoul metropolitan for 15 years(form March 1978 to March 1993). The volume of waste is 92, 000, 000m$^{2}$. The actual vegetation area of Nanji-do is 191ha, and the area of woody plant is 31ha. The rest area is covered by herbaceaus plant. In actual vegetation area of woody plant, Robinia pseudoacacia community and Salix pseudo-lasiogyne community are 83%. The soil pH is alkaline, though general soil pH is acid in Seoul. There is no relation with soil condition and actual vegetation. The result of this study, actual vegetation of Nanji-do don't help the establishment of vegetation restoration after soil stabilization construction. And so following a countermeasure is proposed. 1) Selection of adequate species by an experiment of planting pioneer species, native species, and dietary species 2) Establishment of an adequate planting plan and development of slope stabilization method by planting of native species 3) Establishment of a restoration plan of animal ecosystem by survey for animal ecosystem

Coastal vegetation consists of rooted flowering marine plants that provide a variety of ecosystem services to the coastal areas they colonize. The attenuation of currents and waves and sediment stabilization are often listed among these services. From this point of view, artificial seaweed is an effective method of controlling sea bed sediment and stabilization without damaging the landscape or the stability of the coastline. A series of hydraulic experiments were performed in a wave channel with regular and irregular waves to examine the effect of artificial seaweed in relation to scouring and beach erosion prevention. Based on the results of these experiments, the coastal vegetation model is efficient against scouring and beach erosion.
Drastic changes in the water quality and phytoplankton community of the new Saemankeum Lakeduring the first decade following the construction of the Saemankeum Sea Wall has been considered to be unavoidable. Input of eutrophicated water through the Mankyeong River and Dongjin River might produce more direct effects on the water quality and phytoplankton community, which lead us to launch a long-term semi-weekly investigation at the "Mankyeong Bridge" monitoring point to resolve its short-term effect as well as long-term stabilization of the ecosystem in the new Saemankeum Lake. During 15 months starting from June 2006, the water temperature varied in accordance with the typical seasonal variations in temperate on the coasts, and no significant daily variations evoked by tidal cycle could be detected. However, there was an inverse relationship between seasonal precipitation and salinity even though the range in annual variation was drastically reduced right after the construction of the Saemankeum Sea Wall. Species richness in the phytoplankton community was also reduced due to the narrowed annual range of salinity, which would eliminate the mid-high salinity species from the Mankyeong Bridge monitoring point. Similarly, species diversity was decreased with increased dominance of the phytoplankton community after the construction. Between the two summer seasons during the present study, species diversity was higher in 2007 than in 2006, which might indicate the early stage of a gradual stabilization in the ecosystem including the phytoplankton community at the monitoring station. The phytoplankton community thus needs to be monitored on a long-term basis to identify indirect signals that can be used to assess the stability of the ecosystem in the young Saemankeum Lake.

We investigate how reforestation contributed to stabilization of riverine water levels in South Korea. For the purpose, we estimate an equation capturing dynamic relationships among rainfall, upstream-area tree stock, and downstream water levels in three river systems of Hongcheon, Mangyeong, and Hyeongsan, using daily observations of precipitation and water levels for the period from 1985 to 2005. Simulation based on estimation results shows that increase in the tree stock in a river basin leads to a significantly suppressed peaking in riverine water levels in response to an abrupt and concentrated rain in the upstream area. For instance, an hour-long concentration of 100mm rain results in 0.7m rise in water level if the volume of growing stock is 1 million m3, whereas the rise in water level stays below 0.27m with 5 million m3 in the growing-stock volume.

Background: Inner Mongolia, desertification is happening due to climate change and land use alterations. In order to evaluate desert restoration effectiveness, this study compares number of species and species diversity in restored (with planted trees), unrestored area, and the reference ecosystem (Ref-E, typical steppe and woody steppe). Results: The Ref-E had the most plant species (64 taxa), while the unrestored area had the fewest (5 taxa). Among restored areas (restored in 2012, 2008, 2005), older restoration sites had more species (18-42). Similarly, species richness (3.93-0.41) and diversity (1.99-0.40) were highest in the Ref-E and lowest in unrestored areas, with older restored sites having higher values. Conclusions: More plant species and diversity in older restoration areas suggest progress toward ecosystem stabilization, approaching the Ref-E. Therefore, tree planting in Inner Mongolia's Hulunbuir semi-arid desert is a successful restoration effort.
In this study, we investigated changes in the macrobenthic community in Sihwa tidal flat before and after the operation of a Tidal Power Plant (TPP). In order to investigate changes in the macrobenthic community structure, field surveys were conducted at eighteen stations in 4 transect lines every September from 2011 to 2015. Mean density of macrobenthos decreased to $116ind./m^2$ in 2015 from $1,602ind./m^2$ in 2011. While the mean density of macrobenthos has decreased, species richness and biomass have gradually increased. The species diversity and SEP (Shannon-wiener Evenness Proportion) have also gradually increased over time since the operation of the TPP. The macrobenthic community in Sihwa tidal flat was divided into 4 groups on a yearly base. Before the operation of TPP, opportunistic species such as Neanthes succina and Polydora cornuta largely contributed to the structure of the macrobenthic community, while equilibrium species such as Periserrula leucophryna and Scopimera globosa contributed after the operation. With the operation of TPP, the macrobenthic community has rapidly recovered and this might be related to improvement in the quality of water and sedimentary environments as a result of an increase in water mass volume exchanged through the TPP gate.

Remediation of metal(loid)s-contaminated sites is crucial to protect human and ecosystem. Solidification and stabilization of metal(loid)s by the binder amendment is one of the cost-effective technologies. In this study, metal (loid)s in various field-contaminated soils obtained from steel-making, metal refinery and mining tillage were immobilized by the application of single binders such as diammonium phosphate (DAP), lime, and ladle slag. The efficiency of solidification and stabilization was evaluated by Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) and the Standard, Measurements and Testing programme of European Union (SM&T) extraction processes. In terms of TCLP extraction, the binder was effective in order of lime > DAP > ladle slag. All binders were highly effective in the immobilization of Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cd. The increased immobilization efficiency is attributed to the increase in the Step III and IV fractions of the SM&T extraction. Lime and ladle slag were highly effective in the immobilization of the metal(loid)s, however, As release increased with DAP due to competition between the phosphate originated from DAP and arsenate. A further study is needed for the better immobilization of multi metal(loid)s using binary binders.
In March 2015, the milk quota system in Europe that had lasted for more than 30 years was abolished to improve the competitiveness of the European dairy sector in the international market. Despite an increase in the consumption of dairy products in Europe, the milk price is expected to stabilize in the next decade after a decrease between 2015 and 2016. This stabilization of prices will be caused by a significant increase in production, with the proportion exceeding domestic demand to be exported. In the international market, the price of milk will reduce in the next decade, leading to a restructuring of the milk sector with a lower number of farms, but with higher production and efficiency. Mountain farms will follow the same trend, although these farms play an important social role by providing ecosystem services such as maintaining cultural services, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting soil stability, and improving the aesthetic value of the landscape. Nevertheless, they remain at a disadvantage compared with lowland farms. To prevent the loss of mountain farms, there is thus a need to valorize the ecosystem services that they provide and promote the processing of milk into certified products of high quality.
