INHV (Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus): Past, Present and Future (IHNV (Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus): 과거, 현재, 그리고 미래)

  • A global increase in fish consumption has led to a rapid expansion of aquaculture production, which has been linked to enhancing the spread of infectious diseases. Viral diseases can cause high mortality in many cultured fish species, posing a serious threat to the aquaculture industry. Infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) is one of the primary threats to aquacultured salmonid species, causing huge economic losses. Since the first report in cultured sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka during the 1950s in North America, IHNV has spread to other regions, including Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa by transportation of infected fish and eggs, causing disease and increasing mortality in a wide variety of salmonid species. Here, we review existing information relevant to IHNV: its phylogenetic characteristics, origin, infection history, virulence determinants, susceptible hosts, vectors, and vaccine development. This review also addresses a possible cross-species transmission of IHNV to a new host, olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, a cultured fish of economic importance in East Asian countries.

Current Status and Future Directions of Fish Vaccines in Korea (국내 수산용 백신 개발 현황 및 발전 방향)

  • In Korea, fish is a major food source, and sustainable production of fish is critical for the aquaculture industry. Recently, infectious diseases have become an unavoidable problem in aquaculture and have caused serious economic losses. Therefore, there is an urgent need to overcome this challenge to increase productivity in aquaculture. Vaccination is the most effective and long-term measure for improving the management of a fish farm. Sales of fish vaccines in Korea have been steadily increasing, with a confirmed increase from 600 million won in 2007 to 3.4 billion won in 2018. As of 2021, 30 licensed fish vaccines, including both single and combination vaccines containing more than two inactivated pathogens, have been approved in Korea for 10 fish pathogens. Twenty-eight of these are used in olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus; however, only two vaccines are used in starry flounder Platichthys stellatus, red seabream Ragrus major and rock bream Oplegnathus fasciatus. Therefore, vaccine development is required not only for the olive flounder but also for other cultured fish species. The development of effective vaccines and vaccination programs for fish is a continuous requirement for a sustainable aquaculture industry.

The Effects of the Port Logistics Industry on Port City's Economy (항만물류산업이 항만도시의 경제에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • Port Logistics Industry plays a crucial role in trade creating added value, and contributes greatly in economic growth of a nation. Multitude of studies have been conducted to develop this industry as a means of intensifying national competitiveness. In line with this trend, this study aims to examine the effect of the Port Logistics Industry on the regional economy focusing on Ulsan, and also compare the industry among five port cities by using Korean Standard Industrial Classification (KSIC) Rev. 9 and 2010 Economy Census. The results of this study demonstrate that the Port Logistics Industry has significant regional employment rate and economic importance, showing the high number of workers (11.7%) and sales (13.1%) in 2010. According to the comparison among five port cities between 2007 and 2011, the increase of annual average in the number of companies of Gwangyang (5.72%) and Ulsan (4.23%) is higher than the national average (1.74%), and Ulsan (23.82%) and Pyeongtaek (25.74%) show high increase of annual average in the number of workers.

Study on the Distribution Status of Construction Aggregates in Incheon Metropolitan City and Nearby Areas (인천광역시 및 인근 지역의 건설용 골재 유통현황 분석 연구)

  • A survey of concrete plants in Incheon Metropolitan City and Gyeonggi Province was used to conduct an analysis of aggregate transport distance and production forms, as well as to evaluate the features and current status of aggregates distribution. As a result, areas such as Incheon, Siheung, Bucheon, Gimpo, and Siheung, where the distance to the demand points is less than 20 km, exhibited bidirectional distribution whereas Paju, Yongin, Yangju, and Pocheon, with distances ranging from 20 to 50 km is showed a unidirectional distribution pattern supplying aggregates exclusively to Incheon. Survey on manufacturing forms, more than 85% of the gravel dispersed in the Incheon area is made up of crushed aggregates derived from rocks discharged at construction sites indicating a considerable skew in supply chain. These findings are predicted to have a detrimental influence on aggregate supply in the long run, necessitating policy changes targeted at building an optimal aggregate distribution market.

The Development of China's Venture Capital Industry and the Characteristics of its Capital Spatial Configuration (중국 벤처캐피탈 산업의 발전 과정 및 자본 공간 배치의 특성)

  • This paper examines the development process of China's venture capital industry and the characteristics of its capital spatial configuration. The results reveal that the development of China's venture capital industry has its unique modality, which varies greatly from existing studies, namely, the desynchronized paces of industry development as well as the regional real capital supply and demand trend. More detailed observation shows the Chinese venture capital's spatial configuration has three main characteristics: first, the separation of the registered location and the actual location of business operation; second, the division and spatial configuration of the venture fund's capital circulation. To find the relevant factors related to the above phenomena, a correlation analysis was conducted between both market factors and non-market factors with the above capital spatial configuration. The analysis confirmed that besides the market factors, local legislative condition also presents a high correlation with the phenomena.

  • The H9N2 avian influenza (AI) has become endemic in poultry in many countries since the 1990s, which has caused considerable economic losses in the poultry industry. Considering the long history of the low pathogenicity H9N2 AI in many countries, once H9N2 AI is introduced, it is more difficult to eradicate than high pathogenicity AI. Various preventive measures and strategies, including vaccination and active national surveillance, have been used to control the Y439 lineage of H9N2 AI in South Korea, but it took a long time for the H9N2 virus to disappear from the fields. By contrast, the novel Y280 lineage of H9N2 AI was introduced in June 2020 and has spread nationwide. This study reviews the history, genetic and pathogenic characteristics, and control strategies for Korean H9N2 AI. This review may provide some clues for establishing control strategies for endemic AIV and a newly introduced Y280 lineage of H9N2 AI in South Korea.

  • The international dairy federation's main objectives are to enhance the international dairy market and industry by producing an annual world dairy situation report. The IDF National committee and other international contributors provide a questionnaire to be completed for the country reports on top of other various official studies. Through this report, one can understand the full overview of the global dairy market and specified dairy studies across the world. Due to the economic boom of many developing nations, in 2014 the dairy market saw great increase in the total milk production. The estimated volume is at 802 million tons which is a 3.3% increase from the previous year. The world dairy trade states that due to the abundance of milk, other bi-products such as dairy powder and butter production increased as well. Generally, there is an increasing trend for the demand and supply of milk and all dairy products in the international dairy market.

  • In 2009, the world dairy industry had the most impressive experience throughout all the experiences it had. The milk price in major regions fell to their lowest level for decades. Including Korea, the world economy is obviously slowing. The nations' export plunged due to the global economic recession, in result reduced industrial output and domestic demand. In Korea, the intake of liquid milk slightly decreased from 45 kg per capita in 2005 to 44.3 kg per capita in 2008. However, production and consumption of milk increased fast in China and India. According to 2008 statistics, total milk volume of the world trade reached 42 million tonnes and the major exporters of dairy products were EU, New Zealand, USA and Autralia. The tropical countries has traditionally consumed buffalo milk. The production of buffalo milk is increasing faster than cow milk. IDF expected that EU milk production would recover the medium term displaying a gradual growth over the milk quotas phasing-out period, while constantly remaining below the quota level.

Effects of Different Levels of Hermetia Illucens on Growth Performance and Nutrient Digestibility in Weaning Pigs (이유자돈 사료 내 동애등에(Hermetia illucens)의 첨가수준이 사양성적, 영양소소화율 및 경제성에 미치는 영향)

  • This trial was conducted to determine the optimal supplementation level of Hermetia illucens (HI) on the growth performance, the apparent total tract retention of nutrients and the economic efficiency in weaning pigs. A total of 192 weaned pigs ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$; $6.51{\pm}0.15kg$) were randomly allotted to 4 treatments and 6 replicates on the basis of their initial body weight. The dietary treatments included a corn-soybean meal based diet supplemented with 0, 1, 2 or 3% HI. There were no significantly effects between the treatments in phases I, II and overall. But average daily gain was significant and linearly increased when HI was added to the diet in the overall group. Although digestibility of dry matter (DM) was increased by adding HI, digestibility responses were not observed by supplying HI in phase I. Also, all the parameters of economic efficiency were not significantly different according to the level of HI. The results showed that HI had beneficial effects on growth performance and digestibility of dry matter. However, there were no effects on economic efficiency by using HI in weaning pig diets.

Estimating the economic effectiveness of LED fishing light systems for the squid jigging fishery (오징어 채낚기어업의 LED 집어시스템 도입에 따른 경제성 분석)

  • The fuel cost of fishing lights for squid jigging fishing vessels takes about 30% of total fishing costs and over 65% of total fuel costs, which indicates the necessity of development of cost-reducing and high efficient fishing light system. This study aimed to analyze the economic effectiveness of LED fishing light systems in combination with metal halide lamp for the squid jigging fishery. Analytical results showed that the level of fishing profits of vessels using LED lights could be different with those of vessels using metal halide lights. That is, when a fuel cost could be reduced by 30%, fishing profits of vessels using LED lights might be the same as those of vessels using metal halide lights, and fishing profits of vessels using LED lights could be higher than those of vessels using metal halide lights when a fuel cost could be reduced by 50%.
