  • The habitat characteristic of the Gammarus sobaegensis which is one of the Amphipoda kinds has been found inhabiting in the inter mountain stream at Ganseong stream. From the investigation, the main inhabitant area of the G. sobaegensis maintained the water temperature under $10^{\circ}C$ during the spring and autumn season, and the electric conductivity was also maintaining under $40{\mu}Scm^{-1}$. For the precipitation, for this year when the monthly accredited rainfall did not exceed 800 mm, it did not affect maintaining the population of the G. sobaegensis but when the monthly accredited rainfall exceeded 1,000 mm it was found to be working as a unfavorable condition for maintaining the population. The effect especially from this kind of rainfall created the flow of G. sobaegensis as well as the flow of the fallen leaves which are the food resources and affected the population of the G. sobaegensis as a multiple interruption reason. Among the Functional Feeding Groups (FFGs) distribution depending on the use of the food resources the shredders showed up in the ratio of 20% in the site 1~3, and showed a big difference with the site 4~7 as it showed up in the ratio near 10%. Also, after comparing the variation of the individual number among the G. sobaegensis and shredders at the site 1~3 where G. sobaegensis mainly shows up, it showed the same variation pattern except for 2009.

  • The resident characteristics of land-based pollutants were analyzed to manage the pollution sources affecting Suyeong Bay. These characteristics were analyzed using a hydrodynamic model and particle tracking model. Pollutants were represented by particles, and the amount of particles and pollutants was represented proportional. The resident characteristics were analyzed by comparing the amount of pollutant load, resident pollutants, and the ratio of resident pollutants remaining in the bay relative to the incoming load for each the of pollution sources. The order of the pollution sources was as follows, according to the amount of resident pollutants at Suyeong Bay. the Suyeong WasteWater Treatment Plant(WWTP), Nambu WWTP, Suyeong river and so on. The amount of resident pollutants was smaller for small load farther away from the interior of bay. Nambu WWTP had the greatest load among the pollution sources, but it showed the smallest ratio of pollutants remaining in the bay relative to incoming load among the pollution points. The result indicates that pollutants affect sea areas differently according to the characteristics each area and the topographic characteristics of pollution sources.

  • The contents of major elements were determined in current-year and previous-year needles and fine roots of pitch pine (Pinus yzgida) at 33 sites in Seoul and its vicinity. Contrary to Ca and Al in needles, N, P, Mg and K contents in current-year needles were higher than those in previous-year needles. The N, P, K and Al contents in current-year needles in Seoul were not significantly different from those in rural areas. In contrast, Ca and Mg contents in needles in Seoul were significantly lower than those in suburbs and rural areas. The N /Ca and N /Mg ratios in needles in urban Seoul were higher than those in rural areas. Mg contents in fine roots in soil of 0-5 cm depth increased along with distance from the center of Seoul, while Al contents in fine root in soil of 5-10 cm depth decreased along with distance from the center of Seoul. Al contents in fine roots in soil layer in Seoul and suburbs were higher than those in rural areas. Al contents in fine roots in litter layer were 1 /3 - 1 /2 times lower than those in soil layer for all areas. A1 content in fine roots in deep soil was higher than that in top soil. Therefore growth decline of pitch pine in Seoul and suburbs was thought to be caused by Ca and Mg deficiency in plant tissues and Al toxicity to fine roots. Abnormal vertical distribution of fine roots of pitch pine in Seoul and its vicinity were interpreted as the result of growth reduction of fine roots by Al toxicity in deep layer of acid soil.

  • The objectives of this study were to classify quantitatively vegetational types of P. densiflora for. erecta forest. The results were summarized as follows. 1) According to the canonical correspondence analysis(CCA), variables such as topography, altitude, available P/sub 2/O/sub 5/, and Mg/sup 2+/were highly correlated on three axes. Based on the correlations between vegetation units and environmental factors, Rhododendron micranthum community tended to be more distributed in the such situations of high altitude, upper topography, high C/N ratio, low level of Mg/sup 2+/and Ca/sup 2+/. Vaccinium koreanum community tended to be more distributed in the such conditions of high altitude, upper topography, high level of Ca/sup 2+/and Ma/sup 2+/. 2) According to the results of importance value analysis, Tree layer and Subtree layer in study areas showed high Ⅳ along with P. densiflora for. erecta, Quercus mongonlica, Q. variabilis, Q. serrata, Fraxinus rhychophylla and shrub layer indicated that Ⅳ of P. densiflora for, erecta in Sokwang-ri area was higher than those of the other areas. Therefore, it was considered that P. densiflora for. erecta forest of Sokwang-ri area could be naturally regenerated. 3) According to results of species diversity, the species diversity of Uljin region showed the least low value as 0.6622, other regions appeared about 0.7. In the diversity by vegetation types, Acer pseudosieboldianum community showed high value. 4) According to the analysis of community similarity, Sokwang-Ri region was lowly correlated with Uljin region, while the index among the other areas appeared above 0.6. 5) According to the analysis of interspecific association, it was divided into 2 groups. The species of first group were mainly involved in character species, and the species of second group were involved in differential species groups.

  • In recent years, synthetic and systematic management with conservation-oriented strategy for Baekdu-daegan, which is the greatest chine as well as the major ecological axis of the Korean Peninsula, is being required to cope adequately with the various kinds of developmental urge. For this, spatially definite zoning for the managerial area on Baekdu-daegan has to be completed first. This study is to take into consideration the traditional concepts of stream and watershed as well as the actual disturbance on Daegan area, and to propose the process for reasonably establishing the managerial boundary adjacent to the Ridges. The case site with topographically diverse characteristics was selected, and the analyses on watershed, road network and land use were carried out using the digital maps and Landsat TM images. Based on these analyses results, the managerial boundaries as alternatives from the Ridges were produced by watershed expansion process, and used for tracing the changes of road occupancy rate and the areal ratio of various land use types to the relevant watersheds to search out the adequate managerial boundary. The results show that watershed expansion process could be effective tool for establishing the managerial boundary, and the fourth expanded watershed would be included for the adequate managerial boundary of the case site.

  • Palustrine wetland is often used for development work and green area creation. However, the ecological characteristic of vegetation is not frequently considered in planning. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate vegetation characteristic according to land-use of palustrine wetland and to provide basic materials in assessment of palustrine wetland and restoration and creation of wetland. Survey sites were caterogized into paddy, field, and mountain. Each category had two sites, so total 6 survey sites were investigated for vegetation. As a result, with a range of 61~92 species, total 216 taxa were confirmed, consisting of 71 families, 168 generic, 187 species, 2 variety 1 forma 1 subforma. Mountain received a high score in the evaluation score range of floristic regional indicator plants, and it was found that there were 10 families and 28 species of naturalized plant. Mountain showed low appearance, and fiddy and field showed relatively high appearance. Naturalized plants with slightly high vegetation cover ratio are Erigeron annuus, Amorpha fruticosa, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea, Eragrostis curvula, Trifolium repens, Erigeron Canadensis, Ambrosia trifida, Oenothera odorata, Bidens frondosa, etc. Such naturalized plants should be removed to prevent terrestrialization of wetland and its harmful damages. Long-term monitoring and proper management of naturalized plants are expected to improve palustrine wetland into high quality biotope of rural area in the future.

  • If one can infer the residential area of SNS users by analyzing the SNS big data, it can be an alternative by replacing the spatial big data researches which result from the location sparsity and ecological error. In this study, we developed the way of utilizing the daily life activity pattern, which can be found from timeline data of tweet users, to infer the residential areas of tweet users. We recognized the daily life activity pattern of tweet users from user's movement pattern and the regional cognition words that users text in tweet. The models based on user's movement and text are named as the daily movement pattern model and the daily activity field model, respectively. And then we selected the variables which are going to be utilized in each model. We defined the dependent variables as 0, if the residential areas that users tweet mainly are their home location(HL) and as 1, vice versa. According to our results, performed by the discriminant analysis, the hit ratio of the two models was 67.5%, 57.5% respectively. We tested both models by using the timeline data of the stress-related tweets. As a result, we inferred the residential areas of 5,301 users out of 48,235 users and could obtain 9,606 stress-related tweets with residential area. The results shows about 44 times increase by comparing to the geo-tagged tweets counts. We think that the methodology we have used in this study can be used not only to secure more location data in the study of SNS big data, but also to link the SNS big data with regional statistics in order to analyze the regional phenomenon.

  • This study was carried out to classify all forest vegetation types in Ulleung Island, Korea using the methodology of the Z.-M. school's phytosociology, and map out the spatial distribution patterns of those vegetation types. The forest vegetation was classified into the mountain forest type (Acer okamotoanum community group) and maritime forest type (Artemisia scoparia community group). Vegetation units at the community level were divided into three categories; six communities, sixteen groups, and seven subgroups, giving a total of 22 communities. Total area for mapping was 5,544.9 ha, of which Fagus engleriana community accounted for 1,952 ha (35.2%), Hedera rhambea community ror 1,196 ha (21.6%), Camellia japonica community for 1,104 ha (19.9%), Sambucus sieboldiana var. pendula community for 612 ha (11.0%), Aster spathulifolius community for 506 ha (9.1%), and Tsuga sieboldii - Pinus parviflora community for 174 ha (3.1%). According to canonical correspondence analysis (CCA), variables such as $Mg^{2+}$, pH, $Ca^{2+}$ were positively correlated in maritime vegetation types, and variables such as total nitrogen, carbon content, C/N ratio and ration exchange capacity (CEC) were highly correlated in mountain vegetation types, respectively. The sea level and the slope direction were not showing regular trend as a factor to decide on species diversity, evenness and richness in this research area. But it seems to be affected by topography, slope degree and dominance vegetation.

  • On the basis of vegetation data collected by point-centered quarter method in analysis in Baekdudaegan of Gangwon province in the area of Hyangrobong, Odaesan, Seokbyeongsan, Dutasan, Deokhangsan and Hambaeksan, the study was carried out to classify forest communities and to evaluate the successional trends. The classification method of cluster analysis was used to make various disordered forests into several common groups for 1,004 sample points all together. By clustering the forests in the six study areas were classified into 28 forest communities, which were subjected to aggregate 8 representative forest communities on the count of species composition and species diversity. They were Mesophytic mixed forest community, others deciduous forest community, Quercus mongolica (dominant) community, Q. mongolica (pure) community, Pinus densiflora - Q. mongolica community, P. densiflora community, Betula ermanii community and Q. mongolica - Pinus koraiensis community. The ecological outlook from the result indicated that P. densiflora community and P. densiflora - Q. mongolica community, which were located in Seokbyeongsan, Dutasan and Deokhangsan around 1,000m above the sea level showed lower species diversity index. On the contrary Mesophytic mixed forest community, others deciduous forest community which was located in Hyangrobong, Odaesan and Hambaeksan mostly in protected area and national park around 1,500m above the sea level displayed higher species diversity index. As the composition ratio of Q. mongolica within a certain community was decreased, the species diversity was generally increased, assumed that abundance of Q. mongolica might be negatively associated with species diversity in the national deciduous forest.

  • We measured the grain size, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn) in order to understand the spatial distribution and pollution level of organic matter and metals in surface sediment around Goseong Bay, a shellfish farming area, Korea. The surface sediments were composed of finer sediments such as mud and clay. The concentration of TOC, TN, and heavy metals were much higher in the innermost bay than in the mouth and outside of bay. The spatial distribution of organic matter and heavy metals and C/N ratio (5-10) in sediment showed that the organic matter and heavy metals in sediment of the study region were significantly influenced by oceanic origin organic matter and anthropogenic sources, respectively. Based on the results of four assessment techniques (sediment quality guideline, geoaccumulation index, pollution load index, ecological risk index), the sediments around the Goseong Bay were a little polluted for heavy metals and the high metal concentrations in the northern region of bay could adverse impact on benthic organisms in sediment. Thus, the systematic management plan for the improvement of water and sediment environment and the concentrated monitoring of pollutants for sustainable aquaculture and seafood safety around Goseong Bay are necessary in the future.
