Natural Dye Extraction from Merbau (Intsia bijuga) Sawdust: Optimization of Solid-Solvent Ratio and Temperature

  • The ecofriendly lifestyle has attracted considerable support for sustainable development. Natural dyes, as sustainable products, have become a research focus and development area for many scientists. Ecofriendly processing also supports circular sustainable development. This study effectively obtained tannins as a natural dye from merbau (Intsia bijuga) sawdust using water as an ecofriendly solvent. Merbau sawdust is an underutilized industrial waste. Temperature and solid-solvent ratio variations were performed to extract tannins from merbau sawdust. Temperature and solid-solvent ratio positively affected solution yield and tannin concentration. The optimal condition was identified using response surface methodology and experimental observations. A yield of 0.2217 g tannins/g merbau was obtained under the conditions of 333.15 K and 0.125 solid-solvent ratio. Extraction was controlled by convective mass transfer at the interface of solid particles.

오존접촉산화 공정과 Peroxone AOP 공정을 이용한 염색폐수방류수 고도산화 처리특성 연구 (Study on Treatment Characteristic of Advanced Oxidation Process using Ozone Oxidation and Peroxone AOP Process for Waste Dyeing Water Effluent Treatment)

  • Effect of pH on ozone oxidation and peroxone AOP(Advanced Oxidation Process) process was analyzed and the optimal efficiency for both processes was obtained at pH 7.5. In case of ozone oxidation process, the efficiencies of color, $COD_{Mn}$ and $BOD_5$ removal were measured to 93%, 70% and 89% at a reaction time of 50 min(ozone dosage of 111.67mg/$\ell$). When reaction time increased to 90 min(ozone dosage of 201mg/$\ell$), the efficiencies of color, $COD_{Mn}$ and $BOD_5$ removal were increased by 3~5 %, indicating that the increment of removal efficiency was insignificant considering longer reaction time. Similarly, the ozone/$H_2O_2$ ratio was optimized to 0.5 for peroxone AOP process. Removal efficiencies of color, $COD_{Mn}$ and $BOD_5$ were measured 95%, 81% and 94% at a reaction time of 50 min(ozone dosage of 111.67mg/$\ell$). When reaction time increased to 90min(ozone dosage of 201mg/$\ell$), the removal efficiency of color, CODMn, and BOD5 increased slightly by 1~5%.

Effect of Ecofriendly Pesticides Against Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortrididae) on Tea Tree (Camellia sinensis L.)

  • A study was carried out to identify the life cycle of Adoxophyes orana (Lepidoptera: Tortrididae) that inflicts tea tree leaves in Korea and selected three ecofriendly pesticides (Common name for commercial: Essential oil, Nemacatch, and Wormstop in Korean Farmers' Market) of A. orana for pest control. A. orana appeared to follow four life cycle phases a year; each presenting varying developmental periods dependent on seasonal and environmental factors. The fecundity of A. orana female was $24.6{\pm}4.10$ for $1^{st}$, $36.7{\pm}12.77$ for$ 2^{nd}$, and $27.9{\pm}4.22$ for $3^{rd}$ phase during 2011, while it was $65.0{\pm}32.72$, $49.7{\pm}30.27$, $63.8{\pm}27.22$ for corresponding phases during 2012. The average longevity of adult A. orana was 7.72 days. The average number of eggs deposited by each female in this study group was 44.62 with an average of 2.47. In three selected ecofriendly pesticides, the mortality of A. orana on treating with the Essential oil [The essential oil of Chamaecyparis obtuse (100%)] and Nemacatch [Azadirachtin 800-900 ppm (75%)] were 36.67% and 43.33% after 3 days and were 48.30% and 56.67% after 7days, respectively. Besides, the mortality of A. orana on treating with Wormstop [Azadirachtin 500 ppm (5%) and Salannin+Liminoids (95%)] was 61.67% and 78.33% after 3 and 7 days, respectively. Therefore, the application of Wormstop was the most useful to control the diseases caused by A. orana.

후박 추출물의 들깨 녹병과 잔디 녹병에 대한 방제 효과 (Disease Control Efficacy of the Extract of Magnolia officinalis against Perilla and Zoysiagrass Rusts)

  • 녹병은 Puccinales 목의 병원성 곰팡이가 일으키는 식물병으로서 다양한 식물에 발병한다. 최근 많은 연구자들은 녹병을 효과적이고 친환경적으로 방제하기 위하여 연구를 활발히 진행하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 당후박(Magjia90) 추출물로부터 제조된 유제(EC10)와 수화제(WP20)의 들깨 녹병과 잔디 녹병에 대한 방제효과를 포장에서 조사하였다. Magjia90-EC10과 Magjia90-WP20은 들깨 녹병에 대하여 47.9% 내지 69.6%의 방제효과를 보였고, 수화제는 유제보다 우수한 효과를 보였다. 또한 Magjia90-WP20은 전디 녹병에 대하여 65.7% 내지 80.5%의 높은 방제효과를 보였다. 다른 한편으로, 두 제제를 처리한 식물체 잎에서 어떠한 약해도 발견되지 않았다. 이상의 결과는 Magjia90이 녹병 방제를 위한 천연물 살균제로서 사용이 가능하다는 것을 강력하게 나타낸다.

Bacillus subtilis GDYA-1로부터 분리한 benzoic acid의 식물병원성 곰팡이에 대한 항균활성 (Antifungal Activity of Benzoic Acid from Bacillus subtilis GDYA-1 against Fungal Phytopathogens)

  • 전라남도 영남지역의 감나무 줄기로부터 다양한 식물병에 대해 방제 효과를 보이는 세균을 분리하였다. 분리균주는 16S rRNA sequencing의 방법을 이용하여 동정한 결과 B. subtilis로 동정되었으며, B. subtilis GDYA-1로 명명하였다. In vivo 생물검정에서 GDYA-1 액체 배양액은 벼 도열병, 토마토 역병 및 밀 붉은녹병에 항균 활성을 보였다. 액체 배양액으로부터 한 개의 항균물질을 분리하였으며, 질량분석과 핵자기공명분석을 통해 분리한 물질은 benzoic acid로 동정되었다. Benzoic acid는 M. oryzae, R. solani, S. sclerotiorum 및 P. capsici의 균사생육을 62.5-125 ${\mu}g/ml$에서 완전히 억제하였다. 또한 benzoic acid는 고추 역병을 효과적으로 방제하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 benzoic acid의 식물병원성곰팡이에 대한 항균활성을 처음으로 보고하는 바이다. Benzoic acid와 B. subtilis GDYA-1는 식물병원성곰팡이로부터 작물을 친환경적으로 보호하는데 기여할 것으로 기대된다.

  • A one-pot, facile and ecofriendly approach to the fabrication of covalently fluorinated graphene using mild reaction conditions is reported. This straightforward and efficient strategy allows fluorine groups to be covalently and stably anchored onto graphene to produce single-layer functionalized graphene sheets from a graphene oxide precursor.

Larvicidal potency of selected xerophytic plant extracts on Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae)

  • Chemical insecticides released into the environment may have adverse biological effects. Therefore, there is a need for ecofriendly insecticides for mosquito control. Xerophytic plant extracts that may provide more ecofriendly active component were evaluated against Culex pipiens 4th instars. Plant extracts prepared using different solvents with a Soxhlet apparatus and different concentrations were tested against Culex pipiens larvae. The effects were observed at 24 h and 72 h intervals and $LD_{50}$ and $LD_{90}$ values determined. Chloroform ($CHCl_3$) and ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts of Althaea ludwigii were the most effective against Cx. pipiens $4^{th}$ instars, but were highly dependent on extract concentrations and exposure time. Results suggest that A. ludwigii extracts contain bioactive compounds, such as phenols and saponins, that may provide effective Cx. pipienslarval control. However, the extract was found to be toxic to zebrafish larvae, and may be toxic to other aquatic fauna. Further studies to determine the active components and toxicity to other fauna are needed.

  • The condensation of several aromatic/heteroaromatic aldehydes with 2-aminothiophenol catalyzed by silica sulfuric acid under microwave irradiation afforded 2-arylbenzothiazoles in high yields and short reaction times under solvent-free conditions. The major advantages of the present method are good yields, ecofriendly, reusable catalyst, mild and solvent-free reaction conditions.
