Eco-efficiency Analysis of Organic Agriculture in Korea

  • Eco-efficiency which is calculated by dividing economic productivity by the environmental load was made by synthesizing eco and efficiency from ecology and economy, proposed by World Business Council for Sustainable Development in 2000. Eco-efficiency by connection of resource efficiency with resource intensity is used as an indicator for evaluating green growth for minimizing the impact on the environment and achieving economic development as well by means of efficient use of resources. This research analyzes eco-efficiency with the case of organic agriculture promoted as a key green growth policy. Thirty questionnaires for farmers producing organic rice in Hongseong-gun, Choongcheongnam-do were used for the analysis. Eco-efficiency was measured by means of the amount of used nitrogen with respect to the amount of income, and was represented that organic agriculture was 32.0 higher than conventional agriculture. The analytical result of technical efficiency, using the (Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model showed that it is 0.765 which has a possibility of 21% in management improvement, and higher eco-efficiency was with higher technical efficiency. The analytical results showed that an organic agriculture contributes to green growth more than conventional agriculture. In addition, higher technical efficiency groups exhibited higher eco-efficiency indices.

  • World Business Council for Sustainable Development(WBCSD) is effort to achieve sustainable development in economic growth, environmental preservation and social development. Being this way, it is essential for developing evaluation tool which quantify to fulfill sustainable development. Eco-efficiency is one of the quantitative tools to evaluate environmental impact and economic aspect. Eco-efficiency, in general term, means creating more value of product or services with less impact to environment. It indicates as environmental impact in denominator and value of product or services in numerator. Eco-efficiency shows how much economic value reveals to unit environmental impact caused by product or service as an indicator. This study aims at developing eco-efficiency indicator of railway industry considering use stage among the entire life cycle stage of KTX and Saemaul train and also, figure out eco-efficiency value through indicator. Therethrough, it is enables to evaluate created value per environmental aspects. Since rail vehicles demands a lot of energy to transport people during use stage, the environmental impact is more significant than other lkfe cycle stages. Therefore, it quantified environmental indicator as CO2 emission and economic indicator as transportation record per a year with an annual income. This study contributes to be used as a tool for quantifying indicator of comparison evaluation in respect of rail vehicle in use stage.

자원재활용센터의 재활용 공정에 대한 생태효율성 평가 (Eco-Efficiency Assessment of the Recycling Process in Resources Recycling Center)

  • In this study, we evaluate the eco-efficiency for recycling processes of Busan Resources Recycling Center for each year from 2010-2012. It analyze the impact of global warming on the power consumption by Life Cycle Assessment. Also calculate the economic value by net profit components those are sales amount and electric charge in accordance with the process operation. On the basis of these results, each of the eco-efficiency Factor analysis and dynamics analysis of 2011 and 2012 as the base year to 2010 are performed. As a result, the impact of global warming in all the recycling processes is increased by increasing power consumption 2010-2012. But net profit is decreased. In addition, the eco-efficiency of all the recycling processes is decreased and analysis result of the eco-efficiency trends is located on the Fully non Eco-efficiency (--) level. Therefore, all the recycling processes are necessary improvement for power consumption reducing and net profit increasing to further the environmental and economically sustainable direction.

  • 본 연구에서 네오디뮴 (Nd)를 함유한 영구자석의 재활용 공정에 대한 Eco-efficiency 평가를 수행하였다. Eco-efficiency를 분석하기 위해 환경전과정평가 (LCA)와 전과정비용평가 (LCC)가 수행되었다. 환경적 측면에서, 1 kg의 영구자석을 재활용하기 위해서 1.25E + 00 kg $CO_2$ eq.에 해당하는 지구온난화영향을 나타내었으며, 자원고갈 측면에서는 1.10E - 02 Sb eq.에 해당하는 환경영향이 도출되었다. 이 재활용을 위해서 약 2130원의 비용이 소요되었다. 순수한 Nd와 비교를 수행했을 때, 지구온난화 측면에서 6.43배의 효율성이 나타나는 것으로 분석되었으며, 자원고갈 측면에서 분석하였을 때에는 5.32배의 효율성이 나타나는 것으로 분석되었다. 경제적 측면에서, 약 6.74배의 효율성이 나타났으므로, 본 재활용 공정은 환경적 및 경제적으로 모두 개선된 지속가능한 시스템이라고 분석되었다.

Eco-efficiency Analysis of Urban Agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River

  • Purpose - Urban agglomeration construction is one of national strategic plans to accelerate the development of industrialization and urbanization in China, which has threatened the eco-environmental quality at the same time. This paper selected the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as the research area. Research design, data, and methodology - The the slack-based measurement (SBM) model considering undesirable outputs is applied to measure the eco-efficiency of this urban agglomerations during 2006-2015. Results - The empirical results show that average eco-efficiency of the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is 0.595. Regional ecological development is unbalanced. The highest eco-efficiency is recorded at Wuhan Metropolitan Area, and the lowest one is at the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan City Group. Energy consumption and waste dust emissions are the key factors led to ecological inefficiency. Based on this, potentials for energy saving and waste dust reducing are calculated. Conclusions - Finally, this study provides policy implications targeted to promote the coordinating development of economy and eco-environment under the construction of urban agglomeration.

QEFD를 활용한 제품 환경효율성 측정 사례 연구 (A Case Study of Measuring Eco-Efficiency of Products Using the QEFD Approach)

  • Purpose: This study proposed a systematic approach to measure eco-efficiency of products based on the concept of quality function deployment(QFD). QFD method has been used to convert customer's subjective requirements to design specifications. A extension of QFD to environmental issues is known as quality environmental function deployment(QEFD). QEFD includes environmental requirements into customer's demand for quality, and incorporates them to design specifications of a product. Methods: In this study, we compared eco-efficiency of old and new models through application of QEFD. Results: The result revealed that the new model's eco-efficiency improved 24% better than the old model. Also, we found that user's Factor X of the new model has been improved to 1.178, which is about 18% better than that of the old model. Conclusion: This study implied that we can systematically use QEFD to determine eco-efficiency of two comparable products in any industries.

  • As a global effort to conservate the environment, life cycle assessment(LCA) which considers the environmental impact through the life cycle of a product, from acquiring of resources to scrapping, has been actively applied. The LCA is a tool to calculate quantitatively the environmental impacts caused by products or services through their life cycles. Eco-efficiency need that express value of environmental impact provision EMU and develops in two forms according to use target of Eco-efficiency as a tool that environmental impact of EMU. It is a strategic instrument which assists stakeholders to understand which products, processes or services to target with future investments and which are not by comparing economic and ecological values. The results stand for aggregated information on economical value and environmental impact. Also, In this method, it is important to derive EPI(Environmental Performance Index) and SPI(Service Performance Index) from the sources available. The following is used as one of Eco-efficiency tools to achieve the target performance of processes, products and services for designer or projector. According to the eco-efficiency methodology for EMU developed in this study, the user definition and the DB design were carried out as a basic design of eco-efficiency S/W.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a method of evaluating eco-efficiency of concrete based on environmental load emission, manufacturing cost, and durability in the concrete production process. Eco-efficiency is an advanced concept used to evaluate eco-friendliness of concrete. This technique intends to produce environment-friendly and highly durable concrete while minimizing environmental load on the ecosystem and manufacturing cost based on the results of service life assessment on concrete. This technique can be utilized to efficiently evaluate sustainability of concrete and find methods to improve it. Furthermore, the vision of this study is to contribute to implementation of environment-friendly concrete and construction industry.

DEA-Malmquist 지수를 이용한 중국 환경효율에 관한 평가 연구 (Research on Eco-efficiently Evaluation of China Based on DEA-Malmquist Index)

  • 본 연구는 중국 30개 성시를 연구 대상으로 하여 정태적, 동태적 두 가지 각도에서 연구의 시발점으로 하였으며, DEA-BCC 모델과 Malmquist 지수를 사용하여 2011~2020년 중국 30개 성시의 환경 효율성을 산정하였다. 연구에 따르면 중국 30개 성시의 정태 환경 효율성은 평균 0.643으로 전국 범위에서 뚜렷한 차이를 보인다. Beijing, Shanghai는 환경 효율성이 유효하고 나머지 28개 성시는 모두 차원이 다른 비효율 상태를 가지고 있다. 구역발전에서도 차별성이 있어 전반적으로 동고서저형 공간 구도를 보인다. 전국 30개 성시의 환경 효율성인 Malmquist 지수는 상승하는 성장세를 보이며 기술진보가 주요한 추진력이 된다. 향후 정책에서는 동부지역의 방사선 견인능력을 높이고 각 구역 간 시너지를 강화하여 구역 우위를 충분히 발휘해야 할 것이다. 그리고 산업구조 최적화, 과학기술 수준 제고, 전국 환경 효율성의 상승을 견인하여 녹색 발전을 실현한다.

공정폐열의 자원순환 네트워크 구성을 위한 전과정 평가 및 생태효율성 분석 (Life Cycle Assessment and Eco-efficiency Analysis for the Resource-circulation Network of Waste Heat Generated from Industrial Process)

  • For the purpose of evaluating the eco-efficiency(EE) on surplus heat generated from industrial process, techniques of life cycle assessment are adopted in this study. Because it can be indicated both environmental impacts and economic benefits, EE is well known as a useful tool for symbiosis network on the sustainable development of new projects and businesses. To evaluate environmental impacts, the categories were divided into two areas of resource depletion and global warming potential. It can be seen that environmental impact increased a little but much higher economic benefit on the company, environmental performance and economic value were improved on the apartment by the district heating, respectively. In result, eco-industrial park(EIP) project on surplus heat should be found sustainable new business because the EE was in the area of fully positively eco-efficiency and, moreover resource depletion was taken place than the reduction of greenhouse gas.
