  • The quality factor and the seismic source parameters such as the $\chi$ corner frequency and the stress drop were estimated from the small-to-medium instrumental earthquake data in south Korea. The Q facter with 95% confidence level ranges from 1519 to 2158. The regression equation of $\chi$in terms of epicentral distance R, is obtained as $\chi$=0.006717+0.00015R. And the stress drop is estimated as 50 bar which is similar to the previous results carried out by independent researchers. Artificial ground motions were simulated using the estimated earthquake parameter values and compared with real earthquake, The simulated response spectrum is very similar to real one.

  • The Pohang earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 occurred on November 15, 2018. The epicenter of this earthquake located in south-east region of the Korean peninsula. Since instrumental recording for earthquake ground motions started in Korea, this earthquake caused the largest economic and life losses among past earthquakes. Korea is located in low-to moderate seismic region, so that strong motion records are very limited. Therefore, ground motions recorded during the Pohang earthquake could have valuable geological and seismological information, which are important inputs for seismic design. In this study, ground motions associated by the 2018 Pohang earthquake are generated using the point source model considering domestic geological parameters (magnitude, hypocentral distance, distance-frequency dependent decay parameter, stress drop) and site amplification calculated from ground motion data at each stations. A contour map for peak ground acceleration is constructed for ground motions generated by the Pohang earthquake using the proposed model.

  • The seismic source parameters of the Odaesan earthquake on 20 January 2007, including focal depth, focal mechanism, magnitude, and source characteristics, are analysed using seismic moment tensor inversion. The Green's function for different 3 crust models representing the southern Korean Peninsula are used. Final results show that the event, considering 6 seismic moment tensor elements, is caused by the typical strike slip fault with nearly NNE strike. The focal depth is estimated to be about 11km and 6 seismic moment tensor elements with 7.2% CLVD value shows typical double couple seismic source. The consistent characteristics of the strike and epicenter of the event with Odaesan fault imply that Odaesan earthquake is mainly caused by movement of the Odaesan fault.

  • The source parameters of four earthquakes with magnitude larger than 4.0 nearby the offshore Sinan are analyzed. The waveform inversion method is used for analyzing the source parameters of two events (20 August 2012 and 21 April 2013) with C&B and AK135-c crustal velocity structure models. The source parameters of the other two events (26 July 1994 and 23 March 2003) are obtained from references. Focal mechanisms of the events are strike slip faulting or strike slip faulting with a thrust component. The directions of P-axes of the events are ENE-WSW or NE-SW which are similar to previous studies on P-axes in and around the Korean peninsula. With regard to the events nearby the offshore Sinan, the regional stress, rather than being local stress, is seen to be the result of the combination of tectonic forces from the compression of plates colliding to the Eurasian Plate.

  • The seismic source parameters of the Uljin earthquake on 29 May 2004, including focal depth, focal mechanism, magnitude, and moment tensor elements for source characteristics, are analysed using moment tensor seismic source inversion. The Green‘s function for 3 crust models representing the southern Korean Peninsula are used. Also 3 kinds of epicenters are used to find optimum solution for seismic source parameters. Results show that seismic source parameters have a little dependency of azimuthal distribution and epicentral distances of seismic stations. Final results show that the event, considering 6 moment tensor elements, is caused by the typical reverse fault with nearly NS strike. The focal mechanism implies that the tectonic force around epicenter area currently has compressive environment, with nearly EW principal axis. The focal depth is estimated to be about 12km. The resultant focal mechanism show fairly good agreement to those of other studies. However, focal depth is much different from that of other studies.

  • In this study, the ground motion was synthesized using the finite fault model by the stochastic green function method, and the difference in the ground motions was evaluated by using various values of the source parameters. An earthquake with a moment magnitude of 6.5 was assumed for the example fault model. The distribution of the slip in the fault plane was calculated using the statistical data of the asperity area. The source parameters considered in this study were the location of the hypocenter in the fault plane and the ratio of the rupture to the shear wave velocity, the rise time, the corner frequency of the source spectrum, and a high frequency filter. The values of the parameters related to the stochastic element source model were adjusted for different tectonic regions, and the others were selected for several possible cases. The response spectra were constructed from the synthesized ground motion time history and compared with the different parameter values. The frequency range affected by each parameter and the differences of the spectral accelerations were evaluated.

  • An earthquake occurred on 17 November 2017 in Pohang, South Korea with a strength of 5.4 Mw. This is the second strongest earthquake recorded by local authorities since the equipment was first installed. In order to improve understanding of earthquakes and surface deformation, many studies have been conducted according to these phenomena. In this research, we will estimate the surface deformation using the Okada model equation. The SAR images of three satellites with different wavelengths (ALOS-2, Cosmo SkyMed and Sentinel-1) were used to produce the interferogram pairs. The interferogram is used as a reference for surface deformation changes by using Okada to determine the source of surface deformation that occurs during an earthquake. The Non-linear optimization (Levemberg-Marquadrt algorithm) and Monte Carlo restart was applied to optimize the fault parameter on modeling process. Based on the modeling results of each satellite data, the fault geometry is ~6 km length, ~2 km width and ~5 km depth. The root mean square error values in the surface deformation model results for Sentinel, CSK and ALOS are 0.37 cm, 0.79 cm and 1.47 cm, respectively. Furthermore, the results of this modeling can be used as learning material in understanding about seismic activity to minimize the impacts that arise in the future.

  • The b-value in the magnitude-frequency relationship logN(m) = $\alpha$ - bmwhere N(m) is the number of earthquakes exceeding magnitude m, is important seismicity parameter In hazard analysis. Estimation of the b-value for earthquake data observed on KSRS array network is done employing the maximum likelihood technique. Assuming the whole Korea Peninsula as a single seismic source area, the b-value is computed at 0.9. The estimation for KMA earthquake data is also similar to that. Since estimate is a function of minimum magnitude, we can inspect the completeness of earthquake catalog in the fitting process of b-value. KSRS and KMA data lists are probably incomplete for magnitudes less than 2.0 and 3.0, respectively. Examples from probabilistic seismic hazard assessment calculated for a range of b-value show that the small change of b-value has seriously effect on the prediction of ground motion.

  • The observed spectra from Odaesan earthquake were fitted to a point-source spectral model to evaluate the source spectrum and spatial features of the modelling error. The source spectrum was calculated by removing from the observed spectra the path and site dependent responses (Yun, 2007) that were previously revealed through an inversion process applied to a large accumulated spectral dataset. The stress drop parameter of one-corner Brune's ${\omega}^2$ source model fitted to the estimated source spectrum was well predicted by the scaling relation between magnitude and stress drop developed by Yun et al. (2006). In particular, the estimated spectrum was quite comparable to the two-corner source model that was empirically developed for recent moderate earthquakes occurring around the Korean Peninsula, which indicates that Odaesan earthquake is one of typical moderate earthquakes representative of Korean Peninsula. Other features of the observed spectra from Odaesan earthquake were also evaluated based on the commonly treated random error between the observed data and the estimated point-source spectral model. Radiation pattern of the error according to azimuth angle was found to be similar to the theoretical estimate. It was also observed that the spatial distribution of the errors was correlated with the geological map and the $Q_0$ map which are indicatives of seismic boundaries.
