  • On July 12, 1993, a large earthquake (M=7.8) occurred off the south-west of Hokkaido, Japan. The tsunami generated by this earthquake caused a disaster which took a heavy toll of lives, more than 200 persons dead, by the flooding of tsunami in the area of Aonae district in Okushiri island. Investigation after the disaster made clear that southern lowland was flooded by the tsunami coming from west about 5 min after the shock and the second tsunami from the east attacked eastern lowland of the Aonae District about 10 min after the shock. • A substructural model for a part of a long continuous bridge is identified using measured acceleration at limited locations within the part. Boundary spring constants and structural properties are idenfitied using a system identification method. The proposed method has been examined through simulation studies for static and dynamic responses and the results are discussed in the paper. The method is applied to an actual plate-girder gerber bridge with modal response obtained from a moving truck and construction blasting vibration

  • In the seismic response analysis, the artificial earthquake time history is generated to do the exact seismic analysis for the complex structural system like as containment building. In the present study the several simulated earthquakes are generated by use of SIMQKE program and the time history dynamic analysis of containment building is performed. Also, the seismic responses are statistically analyzed. The seismic response uncertainty arisen from the simulation of earthquakes is one of major uncertainties and the statistical description is needed to account for the random nature of earthquake.

  • A numerical experiment is conduced to study the wave screening effectiveness of wave barriers which are constructed to reduce the ground-transmitted vibration. The finite element method is used for the simulation of the wave propagation behavior. In order to reduce the computational burden the absorbing boundary's one employed. Validity of the numerical model is checked by comparing the results with the published data. The screening effectiveness of the in filled trenches is then studied for different trench dimensions and material properties.

  • Dynamic analyses are performed for the wood structure modeled as a SDOF hysteretic system. The hysteresis model presented is a modified version of Takeda model. The comparison between the results of numerical simulation and the experimental results show good agreements in overall tendencies. The response of wood structure subjected to artificially generated earthquakes considering site effects is studied. It appears that the response is very strongly influenced by the intensity and the frequency contents of the ground motion.

  • This paper reports the results of a study designed to understand and facilitate disaster mitigation for communities located in low frequency/high magnitude earthquake zones. The study is based on a small town located near the New Madrid Fault Zone and is therefore at significant earthquake risk. A system dynamics model describes the variables and policies governing the distribution of building safety over time. Data from this town is used to establish a 25-year baseline. Simulations are run to demonstrate the consequences of different building policies.

  • The performance analysis of water systems is very important to urban disaster mitigation. It will benefit the task of preparedness and emergency response through a more practical and more quantitative approach. In this research work, an overview of hydraulics of water system has been provided. A methodology for such implementation based on scenario simulation and hydraulic analysis has been developed. The water system of Taipei Water Department was selected as a test bed for case study. Its serviceability following a major earthquake around Taipei metropolitan area has been quantified.

  • Many RC building structures of multiple uses constructed in Korea have the irregularities of torsion and soft story at bottom stories. A typical irregular building was selected as prototype and shaking table tests were performed to investigate the seismic performance of this building. The objective of this study is to evaluate the correlation between the experimental and analytical responses of this irregular building structure subjected to the earthquake excitation by using OpenSees(Open System for Earthquake Engineering Simulation). The results of analyses simulate well the behavior of the building having torsional irregularity and weak stories.

  • This paper describes the area of intelligent systems research as funded by the Civil and Mechanical Systems (CMS) Division of the National Science Foundation (NSF). With developments in computer science, information technology, sensing and control the design of typical machines and structures by civil and mechanical engineers is evolving toward intelligent systems that can sense, decide and act. This trend toward electro-mechanical design is well-established in modern machines (e.g. vehicles, robots, disk drives) and often referred to as mechatronics. More recently intelligent systems design is becoming an important aspect of structures, such as buildings and bridges. We briefly review recent developments in structural control, including the role that NSF has played in their development, and discuss on-going CMS activities in this area. In particular, we highlight the interdisciplinary initiative on Sensors and Sensor Networks and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES). NEES is a distributed cyberinfrastructure to support earthquake engineering research, and provides the pioneering NEES grid computing environment for simulation, teleoperation, data collection and archiving, etc.
