  • To monitor the world's oceans and understand the role of the oceans for climate change, an Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) program has been carried out since year 2000. Autonomous profiling floats of about 820 are reporting the vertical temperature, salinity, and pressure profiles of the upper 2000 m underwater at regular time intervals. Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) launched 45 floats at the East Sea and the western Pacific to understand characteristics of water properties and develop the global ocean observation system as a part of international cooperation project. In this study, we introduce ARGO program, METRI-ARGO and the features of APEX float itself and their data formats. We also describe the significant points to be considered for using ARGO data.

  • The Pyungchang earthquake(Jan. 2007, Ml4.9) have recorded PGA of about 0.15g at the Daegwanryung observation station nearby from the epicenter. In this paper the energy response spectrum analyses for the Pyungchang earthquake were carried out and compared with well known American earthquake Taft(1952).

  • The metadata for urban meteorological observation is standardized through comparison with those established at the World Meteorological Organization and the Korea Meteorological Administration to understand the surrounding environment around the sites exactly and maintain the networks and sites efficiently. It categorizes into metadata for an observational network and observational sites. The latter is again divided into the metadata for station general information, local scale information, micro scale information, and visual information in order to explain urban environment in detail. The metadata also contains the static information such as urban structure, surface cover, metabolism, communication, building density, roof type, moisture/heat sources, and traffic as well as the update information on the environment change, maintenance, replacement, and/or calibration of sensors. The standardized metadata for urban meteorological observation is applied to the Weather Information Service Engine (WISE) integrated meteorological sensor network and sites installed at Incheon area. It will be very useful for site manager as well as researchers in fields of urban meteorology, radiation, surface energy balance, anthropogenic heat, turbulence, heat storage, and boundary layer processes.

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of the wind waves near the Korean marginal seas in the 2002 - 2005 year using the third generation wave model, WAVEWATCH - III model. In order to investigate the model performance, model results were compared with the marine meteorological observation results. The 4 years average correlation coefficient between model and observation shows very high value of about 0.77. The model of this study represents very well the characteristics of wind waves near the Korean marginal seas. Simulated monthly sea surface winds and wind waves show the evident spatial variations and this model also simulates very well seasonal characteristics of wind waves in this region.

  • It is known through prior research that the crust of the Korean Peninsula moves southeast at an annual average of 3 cm/year. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake caused a great change in the crust of the Korean Peninsula. Since then, the frequency of earthquakes has increased on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, by using NGII and IGS GNSS observation data of the recent 15 years, to analyze the trends of changes in the deformation of the Korean Peninsula before and after the outbreak of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Data processing utilized Bernese Software V5.2, a widely used scientific and technical software around the world. As a result, the global movement of the Korean peninsula differed by about 4mm and the direction of movement by about 10° compared to before the Great East Japan Earthquake. As for the internal distortion of the Korean Peninsula, the East-West expansion of the Korean peninsula's crust was observed during the Great East Japan Earthquake, but it is believed that it has not fully returned to the level before the Great East Japan Earthquake.

  • Trend of earthquake occurrence of Korea represents that the term from 1978 to 1982 may be called as "active period", the term from 1983 to 1991 is rather tranquil, and from 1992, the occurrence number is increasing greatly. Instrumental earthquake observation of Korea started in 1905 by Japan. It continued until 1943 and ceased then through social disorders such as the independence from Japan Empire and the civil war. After that the observation restarted in 1963 by the establishment the World Wide Standard Seismograph Network. And the fundamental earthquake observation period started in 1978 with the Hongsung earthquake event. KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) has constructed and operated the 24-hour earthquake and tsunami monitoring system and it propels new construction project of the national seismographic network system. In the result of this project, KMA operates 27 seismic networks, 42 accelerator networks, seismic analyzing system, and sea level monitoring system now. It has the plan to enlarge these systems that 31 seismic networks and 75 accelerator networks until 2001.

  • To understand the current seismic activity and regional tectonic status in and around Gyeongsang basin, Korea Institute of Geology, Mining, and Materials(KIGAM) has performed the earthquake monitoring around the Gyeongsang basin since early 1980's with portable analog seismic instruments for about two months every year. As a part of POSEIDON project, Korea-Japan joint observation around gyeongsang basin in 1991 and 1992, was performed using by temporary seismic station. KIGAM has been continuously operated nine short-period 3-components digital seismic stations since the end of 1994. During the observation period, 247 earthquakes were analyzed and their magnitude was less than 4.5. In general, we could not find any relationship between seismic activity and known surface geological features. But the epicenters were rather concentrated with NW-SE direction. The most active seismicity was found in Gyeongbuk Gyeongjugun Seokeupri and Hyodongri, and Yeongilgun Janggiri and Guryongpo in land, and in three region along the east coast which are 10km and 30km east off from Gampo and 30km east off from Jongja in offshore.

  • Ocean-air observation using an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) and Conductivity Temperature Depth (CTD) was conducted in the Mid-Yellow Sea off Korea during 8-10 July 2002. A water mass lower than 17$^{\circ}C$ around the Taean peninsula and a tidal front between 36$^{\circ}$20'N and 36$^{\circ}$30'N were observed. The horizontal distribution of air temperature was similar to that of sea surface temperature (SST). Hourly observation around Dukjuk island showed the cold and saline southwesterly and the warm and fresh northeasterly in phase with tidal current. Sea fogs two times formed at 2300 LST 8-0130 LST 9, and 0300-0600 LST 9 July 2002 during the observation period, respectively. During the initial stage of fogs, winds became northeasterly at the speed of 2-4m/s$^{-1}$, and air temperature dropped to 18$^{\circ}C$, as the North Pacific High weakened. The satellite image indicated that sea fogs formed over warm water in the western Yellow Sea and moved eastward toward the observation site, which could be called a steam fog. The fogs dissipated when wind speed and air temperature increased.
