  • Dynamic loads may arise from rotating parte of pump if they are insufficiently balanced. The magnitude of pump induced vibrations varies according to the weight, eccentricity, and unbalanced mass of pump. This is a study to estimate the pump induced vibration in time and frequency domain by transfer function. The transfer function has real and imaginary information of signals, and response function has also real and imaginary information. So the vibration force can be obtained from the response and transfer function by complex calculation. The amplitudes and components of 50Hp pump vibration force are suggested.

  • Increasing flexibility and lightness of recently built high-rise buildings make the structures susceptible to loads such as earthquakes and winds. Therefore, higher performance vibration control systems to reduce the vibration levels are demanded more than any time in the past. One of typical active vibration control systems is the active mass damper(AMD). In this paper, an active vibration control system consisting of small shaking table, building model, sensors, signal processing board and AMD is constructed. The dynamic characteristics of these individual systems are investigated through the experimental study. The performance of the active vibration control system is verified through harmonic resonant load excitation on building model.

  • The purpose of study is to propose numerical assessment methods of lateral deformation shape under lateral loads for regular high-rise buildings. The normalized 1st mode shape is used to assess lateral deformation shape. The assessment method are mass participation factor, representative value by RMS, the mean value, median of the nomalized 1st mode shape. These methods are able to know a fundamental lateral deformation shape of the building and effects of interactive systems numerically. Generally the characteristics of normalized 1st mode shape for various models coincide with numerical assessment results.

  • The responses of a 1:5 scale 3-story masonry-infilled RC frame which was designed only for gravity loads were simulated by using a nonlinear analysis program, DRAIN-2DX. The objective of this study is to verify the correlation between the experimental and analytical responses of a masonry-infilled RC frame. It is concluded from this comparison that the strength and stiffness of the whole structure can be predicted with quite high reliability using compressive strut (compression link element, Type 09).

  • This paper investigates the dynamic characteristics of spacer grid impact loads and the effects of variations in the amplitude and frequency of the core plate motions on the resultant impact loads. A model of the longest row (15 fuel assemblies) across the core is analyzed using the input motions generated from safe shutdown earthquake. Input excitations consist of time history motions applied to the core support plate, fuel alignment plate and core shroud. The responses are determined for a set of four parameter runs with respect to the amplitude and frequency changes. Spacer grid impact loads and normalized input values for all cases are presented. The results show that changing the natural frequency has negligible effect but changing the amplitude of the input motions has a significant effect on the grid impact loads Therefore, time history analysis is not necessary for a shifted case to get the core responses under the seismic excitation.

  • There are many studies in the literature conducted on the subject of ensuring earthquake safety of reinforced concrete and steel structures using steel braced frames, but no detailed study concerning individual behavior of steel braced frames under earthquake loads and strengthening of reinforced concrete structures with out-of-plane steel braced frames has been encountered. In this study, in order to evaluate behaviors of "Concentrically Steel Braced Frames" types defined in TEC-2007 under lateral loads, dimensional analysis of Concentrically Steel Braced Frames designed with different scales and dimensions was conducted, the results were controlled according to TEC-2007, and after conducting static pushover analysis, behavior and load capacity of the Concentrically Steel Braced Frames and hinges sequence of the elements constituting the Concentrically Steel Braced Frames were tested. Concentrically Steel Braced Frames that were tested analytically consist of 2 storey and one bay, and are formed as two groups with the scales 1/2 and 1/3. In the study, Concentrically Steel Braced Frames described in TEC-2007 were designed, which are 7 types in total being non-braced, X-braced, V- braced, $\wedge$- braced, $\backslash$- braced, /- braced and K- braced. Furthermore, in order to verify accuracy of the analytic studies performed, the 1/2 scaled concentrically steel X-braced frame test element made up of box profiles and 1/3 scaled reinforced concrete frame with insufficient earthquake resistance were tested individually under lateral loads, and test results were compared with the results derived from analytic studies and interpreted. Similar results were obtained from both experimental studies and pushover analyses. According to pushover analysis results, load-carrying capacity of 1/3 scaled reinforced concrete frames increased up to 7,01 times as compared to the non-braced specimen upon strengthening. Results acquired from the study revealed that reinforced concrete buildings which have inadequate seismic capacity can be strengthened quickly, easily and economically by this method without evacuating them.

  • An efficient design concept for earthquake loads, which is called performance based design, has been standard design in USA, Europe and Japan since those countries experienced severe earthquake damage at end of 90's. For general design, struttie model well predicts the strength of the disturbed region, however, it does not provide ductility information at the failure. Therefore, simple tools which are able to predict both the strength and the ductility of RC structures are in demand. 2D lattice model is introduced in this study as an analysis tool for the RC structures subject to earthquake. Experimental correlation studies indicate the 2D lattice model quite well predict the strength as well as the ductility of RC structures.

  • In this study, numerical analyses were used to investigate the performance of a coupling control method for the dynamic responses of adjacent buildings under multiple hazards. Numerical simulations were done using the earthquake loads of regions with strong seismicity in Los Angeles, California, and the wind loads in regions with strong winds in Charleston, North Carolina. The artificial earthquake and wind loads were made using SIMQKE and Kaimal Spectrum based on ASCE 7-10. Ten-story and twenty-story adjacent buildings were selected as example structures, and nonlinear hysteretic dampers were used to connect them. The Bouc-Wen model was used to model the nonlinear hysteretic dampers. The results show that the proposed control method could effectively reduce the dynamic responses, and the optimal control designs were different for each hazard.

  • It is critical for Korea to make effective use of limited space as it has dense population and high traffic volume compared to its terrestrial area. To resolve this issue, diverse types of underground structures have increasingly been applied so far, and one of the most representative structures is double-deck tunnel. It has upper and lower roads separated by middle slab that shows dynamic behavior according to the vehicle and earthquake loads. In case of the characteristics of earthquake response, it is necessary to have exploratory study as it has high loads, complex working mechanism, and difficult theoretical approach. In order to understand the characteristics of earthquake response based on the supporting conditions of middle slab in double-deck tunnel, this study conducts indoor shaking table test with 3 test cases: (1) fix both brackets, (2) free and fix at each bracket and (3) free at both brackets for 2 seismic waves of artificial and Gyeongju earthquake. The result shows if the middle slab is free at both brackets, the acceleration response is reduced 41% for artificial earthquake and 60% for Gyeongju earthquake compared to the one with fix at both brackets.

  • All brick masonry buildings are constructed without any structural limitation under earthquake load, in Korea. However, it is necessary to evaluate response for seismic loads since the number of earthquake occurances in Korea is increasing. In this paper, the load resisting capacities of brick masonry buildings are investigated by finite element analysis method and the response due to seismic load are analyzed by applying 0.12g earthquake load. It was observed that the two story masonry building is not safe under the 0.12g earthquake load, especially at the first floor. The cracks were occurred under the bond beam and around the openings due to the stress concentration.
