  • This paper describes a seismic design procedure for steel moment connections with welded straight haunch. Recent test results showed that welding a straight haunch beneath the beam could be a viable solution for not only repair and rehabilitation of pre-Northridge moment connections but also new construction. Although a design procedure for the connection with triangular welded haunch has been developed recently, it is not applicable for the straight haunch moment connection because the force transfer mechanism is different. A simplified analytical model that considers the force interaction and deformation compatibility between the beam and haunch is briefly presented first based on the writer`s previous study. A generic design procedure as well as details that minimize the stress concentration at the haunch tip are also recommended.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the capacity of columns in the Ordinary Moment Frame (OMF). For this purpose, 3-story building was designed according to Uniform Building Code and ACI building Code.(ACI 318-99) The columns were classified into interior and exterior columns. For each interior and exterior columns, upper and lower parts are modeled by the 2/3 scale experimental specimens. The specimens for lower part columns have lap splice. The interior columns were tested under the constant axial force, while the exterior columns were tested under the fluctuating axial force. Based on the results of the experiments, the conclusion for the capacity of the column is proposed.

  • In seismic design standards such as KDS 41 17 00 and ASCE 7, three procedures are provided to estimate seismic demands: equivalent lateral force (ELF), response spectrum analysis (RSA), and response history analysis (RHA). In this study, two steel special moment frames (SMFs) were designed with ELF and RSA, which have been commonly used in engineering practice. The collapse probabilities of the SMFs were evaluated according to FEMA P695 methodology. It was observed that collapse probabilities varied significantly in accordance with analysis procedures. SMFs designed with RSA (RSA-SMFs) had a higher probability of collapse than SMFs designed with ELF (ELF-SMFs). Furthermore, RSA-SMFs did not satisfy the target collapse probability specified in ASCE 7-16 whereas ELF-SMFs met the target probability.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate effective stiffness of circular reinforced bridge columns and to provide reasonable effective stiffness equations for seismic design to the current Korean Bridge Design Standard. The material nonlinear analysis was conducted for 5184 columns of which variables were the concrete compressive stress, the steel yielding stress, the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, the axial load level, and the diameter of section. The current Korean Bridge Design Standard generally used the gross section stiffness because of unclear provision, it may be non-conservative because of being evaluated greater design seismic force and less design displacement than those of the abroad provision. Therefore, the proposed effective stiffness equations include three variables such as : the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, and the axial load ratio. Two equations of effective stiffness are proposed which may be used for earthquake force estimation and for earthquake displacement estimation, respectively.

  • An isolated bridge using a laminated rubber bearing provides an elastic support of continuous span and prevents the transmission of excessive seismic force from the substructure of the bridge, which uses a metal bearing, as this permits a relative displacement between the super-and substructure. Hawever, this kind of bridge is caused long periodic, as a result of enlargingtotal thickness of the rubber, since it corresponds to temperature change and increases the horizontal displacement of the superstructure. This paper uses a numerical study to describe the pounding problem between adjacent decks when subjected to a strong earthquake. Furthermore, numerical results are clarified for the buffer rubber used to mitigate the pounding force between adjacent decks.

  • The 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake brought serious damage around the Tohoku district in Japan, and much human life and fortune were lost. Bridges were damaged by this earthquake. It was the most serious damage that the superstructures of bridges were flowed out by tsunami. Earthquakes of the same scale are predicted in other areas of Japan. It is necessary to take measures for bridges near coast. In order to understand the tsunami force acting on the bridge, hydraulic model experiments was conducted. In addition, this paper focused on fairing that is effective in wind resistant stability. Installing fairing to bridges has been verified by experiments whether it is possible to reduce the force of tsunami.

  • This paper presents evaluation of seismic design code for AASHTO, Eurocode 8, NZS 3101, and ATC-32 and influence of parameter such as confinement steel ratio, axial force ratio, aspect ratio and longitudinal steel ratio. These seismic design code prescribe confinement steel ratio for appropriate seismic performance which is considered various design parameter. But there is doubt that these parameters are considered rationally in seismic design code. The object of this research is rational evaluation of seismic performance by analysis of existing related experimental research. According to this research, most influence parameter of seismic performance is axial force ratio.

  • This paper examines the pounding problem between adjacent decks subjected to strong earthquakes. The elastomeric bearings in an isolated bridge reduce the stresses on the superstructure and cushion the impact by transferring smaller seismic forces to the substructure. On the other hand, these bearings also allow large horizontal displacement of the superstructure due to seismic forces. Bridges having various supporting soil conditions and different frequency ratios between adjacent decks are investigated by numerical analysis. In the analysis, decision making is conducted whether the collision took place or not and, the magnitude of pounding force and the duration time of collision are obtained and the results are discussed.

  • This paper deals with the dynamic responses of the multi-span continuous bridge with longitudinal shear keys. It is motivated by a need to understand the effects of longitudinal shear keys which may be used for the reduction of the longitudinal seismic force in continuous bridges. The results show that (1) The force reduction of fixed pier is proportional to the ratio of gap size and elastic maximum displacement of the bridges without shear keys ; (2) The thermal movement has little effect on the response of the continuous bridges with shear keys. Also the simplified equation is proposed to calculate the maximum response of the continuous bridges with longitudinal shear keys. The equation requires only the elastic analysis results of the bridge and the gap size between superstructure and shear keys.

  • Most of seismic designs of major structures up to now have been performed by the traditional 'force-based design' approaches. However, they are not so efficient to evaluate the structural deformations by potential nonlinear behaviors which are directly related with the damages or performance levels during earthquakes. Lately, based on this situation, various kinds of new seismic design approaches based on the deformation, which is called 'displacement-based design' procedures, have been proposed. In this paper, most of detail techniques and procedures of the new design methods in the literature are comparatively reviewed and evaluated first, followed by a series of design examples of typical bridge structures. Comparing the results with those of the existing force-based design, the improved levels of performance and economy of the displacement-based seismic design have been validated.
