Earth and rock fill dam is our typical dam because of their inherent flexibility and adaptability to various fundation conditions. In order to secure structural safety, rockfill materials are used angular particles obtained by blasting parent rock or rounded particles collected from river beds. Concrete-faces rockfill dams(CFRD) and Concrete-faces gravelfill dams(CFGD) have become popular in the last 20 years as s result of their good performance and low cost compared with the rockfill dam. These Dams are also constructed by the materials. A key factor in the design of the dams is the deformations induced during construction and upon reservoir filling. These can be predicted using the stress-strain and strength properties can be adequately define. However the stress-strain properties of rockfill are difficult to determine because the properties are affected by such factors as particle grading, size and shape of particles, stress conditions, and particle crushing. In our study, testing of the behavior of the rockfill materials are essential prerequisites to the realistic analysis and design of the CFGD. This paper deals with laboratory testing of particle crushing among the study.
Temperature variation according to space and time on the inner parts of engineering constructions(e.g.: dam, slope) can be a basic information for diagnosing their safety problem. In general, as constructions become superannuated, structural deformation(e.g.: cracks, defects) could be occurred by various factors. Seepage or leakage of water through these cracks or defects in old dams will directly cause temperature anomaly. Groundwater level also can be easily observed by abrupt change of temperature on the level. This study shows that the position of seepage or leakage in dam body can be detected by multi-channel temperature monitoring using thermal line sensor. For this, diverse temperature monitoring experiments for a leakage physical model were performed in the laboratory. In field application of an old earth fill dam, temperature variations for water depth and for inner parts of boreholes located at downstream slope were measured. Temperature monitoring results for a long time at the bottom of downstream slope of the dam showed the possibility that temperature monitoring can provide the synthetic information about flowing path and quantity of seepage of leakage in dam body.

In current design practice, the shear wave velocity (Vs) of the core and rock-fill zone of a dam, one of the characteristics essential for seismic response design, is seldom determined by field tests. This is because the borehole seismic method is often restricted in application, due to stabilisation activities and concern for the security of the dam structure, and surface wave methods are limited by unfavourable in-situ site conditions. Consequently, seismic response design for a dam may be performed using Vs values that are assumed, or empirically determined. To estimate Vs for the core and rock-fill zone, and to find a reliable method for measuring Vs, seismic surface wave methods have been applied on the crest and sloping surface of the existing 'M' dam. Numerical analysis was also performed to verify the applicability of the surface wave method to a rock-fill dam. Through this numerical analysis and comparison with other test results, the applicability of the surface wave method to rock-fill dams was verified.

In present study, the principal stress condition needed to conduct cubical large-scale triaxial test which can reflect three dimensional stress condition (or plain strain condition) in a dam was investigated by performing model test and numerical analysis and the principal stress ratio varying with the height of CFRD was examined. Also, the principal stress ratio in CFRD body was investigated from the monitoring results of horizontal and vertical earth pressure gages, installed in the center zone and lower part of transition zone of the dam body, respectively, in order to consider the principal stress condition in the large-scale triaxial test to model the behavior of CFRD. The result of the study indicated that the principal stress ratio decreased gradually from the lower to the upper part in the dam body for its center axis and was about 0.5 and 0.2 in the lower and upper part, respectively.

In this study, three centrifuge tests were performed to evaluate the feasibility of three physical quantities for detecting internal defect of earth core fill dam: pore water pressure, temperature, and electrical resistance. For this purpose, the measurement system for pore water pressure, temperature and electrical resistance on centrifuge model dams was established. Three centrifuge tests included a fill dam without internal defect and two other dams with artificial internal defect in the core. The effectiveness of seepage monitoring was examined during the centrifuge test. Test results showed the applicability of monitoring techniques to detect internal defect by monitoring pore water pressure, temperature, and electrical resistance.

It is very important to measure reliable properties of each zones in dam for seismic design. But, rock-fill zone which have 80% of total volume and support maintenance mainly during earthquake has little property by field test and seismic design was performed using assumed value. So, it is required that reliable properties have to be evaluated by in-situ test. In this study, surface wave method, which is nondestructive such as SASW and HWAW, was applied to dam to evaluate rock-fill zone of dam. In 2 dams, Vs profiles were evaluated reliably and possibility of suggestion of D/B was verified.
Comprehensive field surveys, including various hydrogeological and geophysical methods, were carried out to appraise the applicability of those methods to a leakage problem at the Sandong earth fill dam in southwestern Korea. The methods applied in the fold site were tracer tests, monitoring of drawdown and leakage with discharge of reservoir water, electrical resistivity surveys using the dipole-dipole array, self-potential (SP), and temperature logging methods. The leakage pattern in the reservoir wall was demonstrated by hydrogeological methods and was further clarified by the geophysical surveys. Leakage turned out to be through the right abutment of the reservoir wall. In this study, we conformed that the electrical resistivity method is effective in detecting the zones favorable to leakage, and SP methods are useful for delineating the leakage pathways themselves, because leaks generate strong streaming-potential anomalies.
The behaviour of an earth and rock-fill dam is complicated due to reservoir water and various materials in zoned dams. Different materials with a wide range of permeability and seasonal variation of reservoir water result in the time dependent post-constructional behaviour. In aged dams it is often required to control water level to keep the dams safe. In this case information on the post-constructional dam behaviour is important. However, present geotechnical knowledge does not fully support the occasion. In this study the post-constructional behaviour of a dam is investigated using coupled finite element models for series of idealized water reservoir cases: impoundment, draw down, seasonal fluctuation with different rising and falling speeds. Numerical results were analysed in respect of geotechnical parameters such as load transfer, hydraulic fracturing potential and stress paths. It is shown that the control of water level is an important factor while operating dams.

The objective of this study is to estimate shear wave velocity of earth dam materials using artificially generated vibration from blasting events and to verify its applicability. In this study, the artificial blasting and vibration monitoring were carried out at the site adjacent to Seongdeok dam, which is the first blasting test for an existing dam in Korea. The vibrations were induced by 4 different types of blasting with various depths of blasting boreholes and explosive charge weights. During the tests, the acceleration time histories were recorded at the bedrock adjacent to the explosion and the crest of the dam. From frequency analyses of acceleration histories measured at the crest, the fundamental frequency of the target dam could be evaluated. Numerical analyses varying shear moduli of earth fill zone were carried out using the acceleration histories measured at the bedrock as input ground motions. From the comparison between the fundamental frequencies calculated by numerical analyses and measured records, the shear wave velocities with depth, which are closely related to shear moduli, could be determined. It is found that the effect of different blasting types on shear wave velocity estimation for the target dam materials is negligible and the shear wave velocity can be consistently evaluated. Furthermore, comparing the shear wave velocity with the previous researchers' empirical relationships, the applicability of suggested method is verified. Therefore, in case that the earthquake record is not available, the shear wave velocity of earth dam materials can be reasonably evaluated if blasting vibration test is allowed at the site adjacent to the dam.
CFRD(Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) is in widespread use because this type of dam has superior characteristics in structural, material aspects comparing with earth cored rockfill dam. On this paper, up-to-date re-searches and techniques are summed up to be available for future needs in design and construction of CFRD. For example, such items as embankment using weak rock, experience of sand-gravel fill CFRD, connecting slab applied between plinth and face slab, raising experience of old dm, inverse filtration problem, environmental friendly zone, thickness and reinforcing of face slab, alluvial foundation treatment, and curb element method, are summarized for understanding of related engineers.
