This study presents how two types of integrated science and engineering lessons affect students' engineering problem solving skills and their perceptions of engineering. In total, 146 middle school students participated in this study. Eighty-six students participated in the Type I lesson (complete engineering design lesson with a science knowledge application) and 60 students participated in the Type II lesson (engineering design without a science knowledge application). Two main datasets, (1) students' Creative Engineering Problem Solving Propensity (CEPSP) measurement scores and (2) open-ended survey questions about students' perceptions of engineering, were collected before and after the lessons. The results of this study show that after participating in the Type I lesson, students' CEPSP scores significantly increased, whereas the CEPSP scores of the students who participated in the Type II lesson did not increase significantly. In addition, students who participated in the Type I lesson perceived engineering and the engineering integrated science lesson differently compared to the students who participated in the Type II lesson. The results of this study show that engineering integrated science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) lessons should include a complete engineering design and a science knowledge application to improve students' engineering problem solving skills.
The purpose of this study was to explore the elementary students' perceptions of Earth systems and environmental issues. A survey was conducted to determine the students' perceptions on the following aveas: (1) the concepts of certainty and tangibility, (2) self-reported knowledge level, (3) perceived danger level of selected eight Earth systems and environmental issues, and (4) their primary information source on these issues. Results indicated that ozone hole, acid rain, El $Ni\widetilde{n}o$, and global warming were identified by the students as uncertain and intangible issues. Perceived certainty and perceived tangibility were highly positively correlated with self-reported knowledge compared to other relationships. The results also showed that learning from school was the most frequent information source for environmental issues. The second most frequently used source of information was television among several mass media sources. It is hoped that this study contributes to understanding the elementary school students' perceptions toward the selected Earth systems and environmental issues.
The purpose of this research is to investigate characteristics of science content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge shown in the primary school science classes. Through analysis of classroom teaching, explore the features and differences between primary and secondary school science PCK. Using open-ended interviews with the teachers and group discussions on a regular basis to analyze and compare classes of five primary school teachers, the relationship between CK and PCK. Regardless of the school level the teacher's PCK and professionalism is required with varying focus and emphasis. The features of the primary school teacher's PCK are as follows: Firstly, elementary teach secondary teach content, teachers value pedagogical knowledge (PK) content knowledge (CK). The primary school PCK requires more of understanding of students and teaching methods that to subject areas. PCK be without content knowledge, and the teacher's PCK is subject-specific In addition to the characteristics of PCK in the primary school science teaching, ways to set up professional exchange or collaboration between primary and secondary teachers, and to provide supplementary in-service training focused on content knowledge for primary school teachers.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the questions of earth science knowledge presented in elementary science textbooks. In group activities, The questions were created by preservice elementary teachers assuming that they were teaching the earth science knowledge in science education classes at university of education. Types, frequencies, and sources of the cognitive background knowledge of the questions were analyzed. The results demonstrated the followings. First, types, concentrations, and sources of the cognitive background knowledge of the questions were different depending on the domains of earth science. Specifically, in astronomy domain, the frequencies and concentrations of the questions showed different trends compared with other domains in its individual lessons. It suggests that instructional strategies that reflected the difference found in each lessons be appropriately designed and used. Second, it was found that 'schools' was the most dominant sources of the cognitive background. 'Friends' were also found to be very important sources, thus promoting students' interaction with their peers would become an important strategy in science teaching. It was also found that mass media such as 'internet' and 'TV' were roughly rated the same as 'schools' which illustrated that mass media could be utilized in science instruction. Third, since types, concentrations, and frequencies of the questions were diverse in the lessons of units, it is suggested that diverse instruction strategies also be taken into account as an educational approach in teaching the subjects in teacher education.
This study aims to describe various teaching cases about 'earth revolution' in terms of PCK; knowledge of curriculum, knowledge of teaching strategies and knowledge of assessment. Based on these various cases we suggested PCK progressions about 'earth revolution'. For these, we recorded 'solar system and star' classes of nine elementary school teachers' in Kangwon, Gyeonggi, Gwangju, and Seoul. We adopted Lee & Lee (2016)'s topic-specific PCK framework to analyze the classes. As results, we suggested topic-specific PCK progression about 'earth revolution'. The results showed the upper anchor of the earth revolution class were exploring the reason of the change of constellation, finding the tendency of constellation change. These teachings were carried by the teachers' adaptive strategies. The upper anchor of the assessment was monitoring students' understanding during the whole class. The PCK progression about 'earth revolution' could help the teachers plan the earth revolution class, and reflect their own teachings.
The purpose of this study was to investigate Earth Systems Understandings (Mayer, 1991) and Earth Systems meaning generation reported by science-talented students who participated in a geological field trip. The eight (4 female and 4 male students) field trip reports were randomly selected among all the reports written by twenty eighth-grade students who joined Shiwha-Lake field trip in Korea. The three-step program, including preparation, field trip, and summary, was provided to the students in order to facilitate meaningful learning through outdoor teaming activities. Seven Earth Systems Understandings and thematic types (Keys, 1999) were used to analyze the reports. The results of this study indicated thai aesthetic views and stewardship toward the Earth, which were the most distinguishing characteristics in Earth Systems Education, were reflected on most of the reports. The results also showed that the students tried to represent their understandings in such a type as meaning extension, meaning enhancement, or meaning elaboration. Overall, many students used 'knowledge-telling' process with a long list of observations and facts, whereas a few students used higher-order 'knowledge-transforming' process by coordinating their findings with interpretations and reasoning in their writings.
The purpose of this study is to explore high school students' environmental literacy and from its result, to suggest ways to reform environmental education. 1047 students from Seoul and Kyeongki province participated in the survey. The questionnaire consisted of four criteria of environmental literacy including knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior. The result was analyzed and the factors which affect high school students environmental literacy were explored. From this result, we made suggestions to improve environmental education as follows. First, environmental education in school should focus on knowledge criterion. Though school environmental education has been helpful for students to build environmental literacy in attitude and behavior criteria, its effect has not been good enough in knowledge criterion. Second, science education can enhance students' environmental literacy. Students who like science best and students who belong to science major classes were reported to possess better understanding in knowledge criterion. Also, students who like life science appeared to have a more positive attitude in environmental literacy. Third, informal education must be considered to form students' environmental literacy. In particular, the effect of mass media is inarguable. Thus, we should find a way to link formal education and informal education to improve environmental education. Fourth, high school students' interest in the environment must be encouraged since it is evident that higher interest would result in better outcome in environmental education.
This study investigated science gifted middle school students' philosophical views on scientific knowledge, and the effects of discussing and reading related to the knowledge. Ten eighth-graders in a science gifted class participated in this study. The results can be summarized as follows: 1, At the beginning, the students had one of six positions: (a) relativism (n = 2); (b) falsificationism (n = 2); (c) borderline between relativism and eclecticism (n = 1); (d) borderline between falsificationism and eclecticism (n = 3); (e) borderline among relativism, falsificationism, and eclecticism (n = 1); and (f) borderline inductivism and eclecticism (n = 1). This result indicated that most students had on almost modern philosophical view of scientific knowledge. 2, Some students, who had chosen the item of inductivism in some questions of the instrument at the beginning, maintained their selection despite discussions and readings related to scientific knowledge. The data were examples which indicated the difficulty of changing from a traditional view to a modern view of scientific knowledge.
The purpose of this study was to explore middle school students' perceptions about earth systems in order to implement the 2009 revised national science curriculum effectively. A total of 1219 students participated in the survey and asked to determine their basic understandings about earth systems, self-reported knowledge level, and perceived significance level of the 23 earth systems concepts (contents). In relation to students' basic understandings about earth system, approximately 67% students reported that they didn't know about the term of the earth system. Atmosphere and hydrosphere were highly perceived as major component of earth system. However, cryoshere was perceived to be least familiar by the subjects. The findings also showed that students' self-reported knowledge level and significance level about major ESU#4, #5, #6 related concepts (contents) were significantly different by gender. Most of male students were more knowledgeable and perceived more significant than female students. Regarding the difference of the perceived significance level by grade, 10 out of 23 concepts were significantly different. Some implications for implementing the revised curriculum and school fields were discussed.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the content knowledge and problem solving process used by pre-service earth science teachers while discriminating faults on geological maps. For this, we collected and evaluated data on fixation duration and gaze plot, while pre-service earth science teachers (N=12) solved the problem on faults interpretation using an eye tracker (Tobii Pro Glass 2 model). The results were as follows. First, most of the pre-service earth science teachers know the concepts of the normal and reverse fault but they do not know the procedural knowledge essential for fault interpretation on geological maps. Second, the pre-service earth science teachers did not draw a geological cross-sectional map to interpret the fault on the geological map and interpreted the fault based on two-dimensional information collected from the geological map rather than three-dimensional information. Therefore, it is essential to improve the teaching and learning environment so that pre-service earth science teachers who will become earth science teachers in the future can learn procedural knowledge essential to comprehend natural phenomena including understanding natural phenomena. The results of this study can substantially help organize a new earth science curriculum or develop materials on teachers' education in the future.
