부산 해안지역의 물의 라돈 농도와 지하수 유출 특성 (Characterizing Groundwater Discharge and Radon Concentration in Coastal Waters, Busan City)

  • Groundwater which infiltrated in recharge areas discharges in the forms of evapotranspiration, baseflow to streams, groundwater abstraction and eventually flows into the sea. This study characterized radon-222 concentration and electrical conductivity (EC) in coastal groundwater discharge, well groundwater, Ilkwang Stream water, and seawater in the coastal area of Busan Metropolitan City and subsequently estimated groundwater discharge rate to the sea. The median value of Rn-222 concentration is highest in well groundwater (18.36 Bq/L), and then decreases in the order of coastal groundwater discharge (15.92 Bq/L), Ilkwang Stream water (1.408 Bq/L), and seawater (0.030 Bq/L). The relationship between Rn-222 concentration and EC values is relatively strong in well groundwater and then in seawater. However, the relationship is not visible between coastal groundwater discharge and Ilkwang Stream water. The groundwater discharge rate to the sea is estimated as $3,130m^3$/day by using radon mass budget model and $16,788m^3$/day by using Darcy's law.

연안지역 지형적 특성에 따른 윈드프로파일러 자료의 자료동화 효과 분석 (The Application of Wind Profiler Data and Its Effects on Wind Distributions in Two Different Coastal Areas)

  • The effects of high-resolution wind profiler (HWP) data on the wind distributions were evaluated in two different coastal areas during the study period (23-26 August, 2007), indicating weak-gradient flows. The analysis was performed using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with a three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) data assimilation system. For the comparison purpose, two coastal regions were selected as: a southwestern coastal (SWC) region characterized by a complex shoreline and a eastern coastal (EC) region surrounding a simple coastline and high mountains. The influence of data assimilation using the HWP data on the wind distributions in the SWC region was moderately higher than that of the EC region. In comparison between the wind speed and direction in the two coastal areas, the application of the HWP data contributed to improvement of the wind direction distribution in the SWC region and the wind strength in the EC region, respectively. This study suggests that the application of the HWP data exerts a large impact on the change in wind distributions over the sea and thus can contribute to the solution to lack of satellite and buoy data with their observational uncertainty.

Plasma Flows and Bubble Properties Associated with the Magnetic Dipolarization in Space Close to Geosynchronous Orbit

  • In this paper we examine a total of 16 dipolarization events that were observed by THEMIS spacecraft in space close to geosynchronous orbit, r < ${\sim}7\;R_E$. For the identified events, we examine the characteristics of the plasma flows and associated bubbles as defined based on $pV^{5/3}$, where p is the plasma pressure and V the volume of unit magnetic flux. First, we find that the flow speed in the near-geosynchronous region is very low, mostly within a few tens of km/s, except for a very few events for which the flow can rise up to ~200 km/s but only very near the dipolarization onset time. Second, the bubble parameter, $pV^{5/3}$, decreases by a much smaller factor after the dipolarization onset than for the events in the farther out tail region. We suggest that the magnetic dipolarization in the near-geosynchronous region generates or is associated with only very weak plasma bubbles. Such bubbles in the near-geosynchronous region would penetrate earthward only by a small distance before they stop at an equilibrium position or drift around the Earth.

제주도 수리지질 특성이 빗물 숨골 유입에 미치는 영향 해석 (Interpretation of the influence of hydrogeological characteristics on rainwater inflow into Sumgol, Jeju Island, South Korea)

  • Sumgol in Jeju Island plays a significant role in groundwater recharge due to its permeable hydrogeological characteristics. However, a quantitative assessment of the interrelationship between rainfall characteristics and rainwater inflows into Sumgols has not yet been conducted. Therefore, this study examined the characteristics of rainwater inflow into three Sumgols located in the eastern and western regions of Jeju Island and assessed hydrogeologic factors influencing these inflows. During two rainfall events, the studied locations in Sumgol exhibited different characteristics of rainwater inflows, despite experiencing similar rainfall events. Additionally, the delay time for rainwater to reach the Sumgol locations after the rainfall was influenced more by rainfall intensity than by cumulative amount of rainfall. In Sumgols located in non-volcanic ash soil with low hydraulic conductivity, such as those in agricultural areas, rainwater inflows were observed even with small rainfall and low rainfall intensity. This study suggests that rainfall intensity, soil characteristics, permeability of lava flows, and land use are key factors influencing rainwater inflow into Sumgols, revealing that soil characteristics and the permeability of lava flows have a greater impact on surface runoff than land use.

한국-중국 북부지역에서 여름 강수량의 십년간 변동 (Interdecadal Change of Summer Rainfall in the Region of Korea and Northern China)

  • 이 연구는 한국-중국 북부 지역($35^{\circ}-40^{\circ}N$, $110^{\circ}-130^{\circ}E$)에서 영역평균 된 여름(6-8월) 강수량의 증가경향이 1990년대 후반에 뚜렷하게 나타났음을 분석하였다. 따라서 한국-중국 북부지역에서 1998년 이후에 여름 강수량이 증가한 원인을 알아보기 위해 1998-2012년 평균과 1981-1997년 평균 사이에 종관환경에 대한 차를 분석하였다. 850 hPa 유선분석에서는 북태평양 지역과 호주 동쪽지역에서 거대한 고기압성 순환 아노말리가 강화되었다. 양반구에서 이러한 순환 아노말리에 의해 적도 중태평양으로부터 열대 서태평양에 편동풍 아노말리(무역풍 아노말리)가 강화되었다. 이는 라니냐 해에 나타나는 순환 패턴의 아노말리였다. 200 hPa 유선에서는 남 북태평양 모두에서 거대한 저기압성 순환 아노말리가 역시 강화되었다. 이러한 두 순환 아노말리에 의해 적도 중태평양 및 서태평양에서는 서풍의 아노말리가 강화되었다. 이는 1990년대 후반 이후 한국-중국 북부 지역에서 여름 강수량의 증가가 라니냐 패턴과 연관되었으며, 이 결과는 결국 워커 순환의 강화로 이어졌다. 또한 최근 동아시아 지역에서는 적도 서태평양과 동아시아 중위도 지역에서 상승한 기류가 아열대 서태평양지역에서 하강하는 지역 해들리 순환이 강화되었다.

WRF/HYSPLIT 모델을 이용한 고리원전 인근 국지바람 패턴에 따른 방사성물질 대기확산 특성 (Atmospheric Dispersion of Radioactive Material according to the Local Wind Patterns around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant using WRF/HYSPLIT Model)

  • The characteristics of atmospheric dispersion of radioactive material (i.e. $^{137}Cs$) related to local wind patterns around the Kori nuclear power plant (KNPP) were studied using WRF/HYSPLIT model. The cluster analysis using observed winds from 28 weather stations during a year (2012) was performed in order to obtain representative local wind patterns. The cluster analysis identified eight local wind patterns (P1, P2, P3, P4-1, P4-2, P4-3, P4-4, P4-5) over the KNPP region. P1, P2 and P3 accounted for 14.5%, 27.0% and 14.5%, respectively. Both P1 and P2 are related to westerly/northwesterly synoptic flows in winter and P3 includes the Changma or typhoons days. The simulations of P1, P2 and P3 with high wind velocities and constant wind directions show that $^{137}Cs$ emitted from the KNPP during 0900~1400 LST (Local Standard Time) are dispersed to the east sea, southeast sea and southwestern inland, respectively. On the other hands, 5 sub-category of P4 have various local wind distributions under weak synoptic forcing and accounted for less than 10% of all. While the simulated $^{137}Cs$ for P4-2 is dispersed to southwest inland due to northeasterly flows, $^{137}Cs$ dispersed northward for the other patterns. The simulated average 137Cs concentrations of each local wind pattern are $564.1{\sim}1076.3Bqm^{-3}$. The highest average concentration appeared P4-4 due to dispersion in a narrow zone and weak wind environment. On the other hands, the lowest average concentration appeared P1 and P2 due to rapid dispersion to the sea. The simulated $^{137}Cs$ concentrations and dispersion locations of each local wind pattern are different according to the local wind conditions.

Sedimentary Facies and Architecture of a Gigantic Gravelly Submarine Channel System in a Cretaceous Foredeep Trough (the Magallanes Basin, Southern Chile)

  • The Lago Sofia conglomerate in southern Chile is a deep-marine gravelly deposit, which is hundreds of meters thick and kilometers wide and extends laterally for more than 100 km, filling the foredeep trough of the Cretaceous Magallanes Basin. For understanding the depositional processes and environments of this gigantic deep-sea conglomerate, detailed analyses on sedimentary facies, architecture and paleoflow patterns were carried out, highlighting the differences between the northern (Lago Pehoe and Lago Goic areas) and southern (Lago Sofia area) parts of the study area. The conglomerate bodies in the northern part occur as relatively thin (< 100 m thick), multiple units intervened by thick mudstone-dominated sequences. They show paleoflows toward ENE and S to SW, displaying a converging drainage pattern. In the southern part, the conglomerate bodies are vertically interconnected and form a thick (> 400 m thick) conglomerate sequence with rare intervening fine-grained deposits. Paleoflows are toward SW. The north-to-south variations are also distinct in sedimentary facies. The conglomerate bodies in the southern part are mainly composed of clast-supported conglomerate with sandy matrix, which is interpreted to be deposited from highly concentrated bedload layers under turbidity currents. Those in the northern part are dominated by matrix- to clast-supported conglomerate with muddy matrix, which is interpreted as the products of composite mass flows comprising a turbidity current, a gravelly hyperconcentrated flow and a mud-rich debris flow. All these characteristics suggest that the Lago Sofia conglomerate was formed in centripetally converging submarine channels, not in centrifugally diverging channels of submarine fans. The tributaries in the north were dominated by mass flows, probably affected by channel-bank failures or basin-marginal slope instability processes. In contrast, the trunk channel in the south was mostly filled by tractive processes, which resulted in the vertical and lateral accretion of gravel bars, deposition of gravel dunes and filling of scours and channels, similar to deposits of terrestrial gravel-bed rivers. The trunk channel developed along the axis of foredeep trough and its confinement within the trough is probably responsible for the thick, interconnected channel fills. The large-scale architecture of the trunk-channel fills shows an eastward offset stacking pattern, suggesting that the channel migrated eastwards most likely due to the uplift of the Andean Cordillera.

베수비오 화산의 79년 분화 기록에 대한 화산학적 해석 (Volcanological Interpretation of Historic Record of AD 79 Vesuvius eruption)

  • 지구 상에서 최초로 화산 분화와 화산재해에 대한 역사기록인 '플리니 편지'를 고찰하여 베수비오 화산의 서기 79년 분화에서는 어떠한 분화 양상을 보였는지 분석하였다. 8월 24일 오전 1시에 시작된 분화는 이틀동안 지속되었고 다량의 화산재와 부석이 분출되었으며, 바람에 따라 이동하여 인근 도시들에 떨어졌다. 그 외에도 화산 측면을 따라 빠른 속도로 화성쇄설류(또는 화쇄난류)가 흘렸으며, 분화와 동반된 여러 차례의 지진과 쓰나미 등의 여러 현상들도 발생하였다. 이로 인해 베수비오 화산 인근에 위치한 도시들은 화산재와 화성쇄설류에 의해 묻혀 매몰되었다. 이에 대한 피해 범위를 폼페이, 헤르쿨라네움, 스타비아에, 오플론티스를 대상으로 선정하여 선행연구를 수집·분석하여 조사하였다. 각 지역별로 베수비오 화산과의 거리와 위치에 따라 차이가 나는 퇴적 층서와 층후를 보이고 있으며, 퇴적층 안에서는 당시 분화에 의해 사망한 주민들의 유골도 발견되었다. 현재까지 발견된 유골은 폼페이에서 1,150구, 헤르쿨라네움 306구, 스타비아에 111구, 오플론티스 54구이며, 분화로 인해 사망한 사람의 수가 정확하게 알려지지 않았다. 플리니의 편지의 상세한 분화 현상 기술로 인해 서기 79년 베수비오 화산 분화 양상을 보이는 분화를 플리니의 이름에서 착안하여 플리니안 분화라고 명명되어 새로운 분화유형으로 정의되었다.

수두손실률에 의한 침투류 감시기법 개발 (Development of the Seepage Flow Monitoring Method by the Hydraulic Head Loss Rate)

  • 본 연구에서는 침투압이 주기적으로 변화하는 연근해 가물막이 시공현장에 적용하기 위해서 수두손실그래프에 의한 침투류 감시기법을 개발하였다. 이 기법에서 새로이 정의된 수두손실율은 0~1 사이의 값으로 나타나며 0이면 완전통수상태, 1이면 완전차수상태를 나타낸다. 수두손실그래프의 결정계수가 1에 가까우면 침투경로상의 지반은 안정된 상태에 있음을 나타내고 0에 가까우면 공동이 존재할 수도 있고 파이핑이 진행 중일 수도 있다. 수두손실그래프에 의한 안전관리기법은 침투상태의 변화를 민감하게 감지할 수 있도록 하며 전체 현장에 적용할 경우 각 위치별 하부지반의 침투상태를 세부적으로 판단할 수 있도록 한다.

장마 강수를 위한 앙상블 통계 예측 모델 개발 (The Development of Ensemble Statistical Prediction Model for Changma Precipitation)

  • Statistical forecast models for the prediction of the summertime Changma precipitation have been developed in this study. As effective predictors for the Changma precipitation, the springtime sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the North Atlantic (NA1), the North Pacific (NPC) and the tropical Pacific Ocean (CNINO) has been suggested in Lee and Seo (2013). To further improve the performance of the statistical prediction scheme, we select other potential predictors and construct 2 additional statistical models. The selected predictors are the Northern Indian Ocean (NIO) and the Bering Sea (BS) SST anomalies, and the spring Eurasian snow cover anomaly (EUSC). Then, using the total three statistical prediction models, a simple ensemble-mean prediction is performed. The resulting correlation skill score reaches as high as ~0.90 for the last 21 years, which is ~16% increase in the skill compared to the prediction model by Lee and Seo (2013). The EUSC and BS predictors are related to a strengthening of the Okhotsk high, leading to an enhancement of the Changma front. The NIO predictor induces the cyclonic anomalies to the southwest of the Korean peninsula and southeasterly flows toward the peninsula, giving rise to an increase in the Changma precipitation.
