  • Early marriage in contemporary society has brought about many problems. The practice is encouraged by gender inequality, poverty and social norms. It reproduces social power imbalances including increased economic vulnerability of women, low educational attainment of girls, gender inequality at home and in the labor market, physical and sexual violence against women and their health problems. The Ethiopian government increased the minimum legal age of marriage for women from 15 to 18 years, by revising its family code in 2000 and newly adopting a criminal law in 2005 that includes punishment against any harmful tradition. Nonetheless, early marriage is still widely practiced in many parts of rural Ethiopia. This is because the practice has long been embedded and deeply rooted in the lives of the people. Earlier literature on early marriage in Ethiopia tends to focus only on women's experiences and regard that all early-married people, particularly women, are unhappy with their lives. This paper attempts to explore the issue of early marriage through voices of people with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, in order to address the limitations of the previous literature. This article aims at examining why early marriage has occurred in Ethiopia and how it has affected family life and women's educational attainment, focusing on the case of Meki town. As seen from this study, it is true that early marriage generally had negative influences on the lives of women. However, it is equally true that some men are also victims of the practice while some women have improved their lives by means of it. This implies that we need to listen to the voices of diverse people when we examine early marriage.

  • With the recent increase in the number of foreign settlers in our country, we need a societal system which they can adapt well in. In order to successfully settle in our society, the marriage immigrants who especially plan a life in a new environment should be supported with support programs, especially to help them adapt to their very basic housing environment as their daily environment. From this research, through a program analysis of multi-cultural family support centre, the societal support helping to adapt to the residential environment for marriage immigrants in each nation was examined, and grasp an understanding on their adaptation to the housing environment by conducting interviews about housing environment adaptation examples. From the result of analyzing the 100 programs of the multi-cultural family support system, it could be seen that for the marriage immigrants to adapt, various programs are needed. In other words, there are effective programs for the early settlement of the marriage immigrants such as Korean education, tradition culture education, provision of district daily information, but it could be seen that heavier education was needed for, than for the sake of the marriage immigrants who took such education. Through adaptation case examples of 8 marriage immigrants from 5 different countries, it was realizable that the housing problems the marriage immigrants go through, are not limited to themselves, but also are related to the safety of their family and adaptation problems with their children. Therefore, by developing an adaptation program to help with housing environmental adaptation, the lives of the marriage immigrants' families will be supported, and will support early settlement, which then basic preparation for human resources as district societal use will be needed. By developing a program with a housing environmental professional, and if there is a positive effect and achievement, it is expected that there will be a standard program system available for all marriage immigrants.

  • This study investigated perceptions of early childhood teachers about children of Female International Marriage Migrants(FIMM) and their classroom conditions. Data was collected from 117 teachers of kindergartens and day care centers in Jeonnam Province using a 28-item inventory composed of classroom conditions and perceptions of teachers about the children of FIMM. Results showed that over 70% of teachers' students were children of FIMM. Children's traits included poor language skills, confusion of identity, and socio-emotional problems due to passive interaction with peers. Programs specifically for FIMM and their children are rare. Teachers considered difficulties teaching children of FIMM are due to lack of economic support, hardship of managing multicultural curriculum, restrictions in application of that curriculum, and institutional inertia.

Results: The risks of preterm birth and low birth weight for native-born and foreign-born women differed according to the duration of marriage or birth order. For the first infant, foreign-born women were more likely to have pereterm birth or low birth weight than the native-born in the early stage of marriage but nativeborn women had higher risks than the foreign-born in the middle and later stage of marriage.
