맥류의 출수기에 관한 연구 III. 소맥품종의 조숙성 변이에 관한 요인분석 (Heading Date of Wheat and Barley III. Factorial Analysis of Wheat Varieties on Earliness)

  • 본 시험은 소맥 조숙품종 육성을 위한 기초 연구로서 소맥 60품종을 국내 4개소(수원, 이리, 밀양, 무안)에 공시하여 출수기와 성숙기 및 숙기에 관여하는 내적 요인인 파성, 광주반응. 협의의 조만성 및 내한성을 조사하였으며, 또한 간장 등 일반특성 및 수량구성형질과 조숙성과의 관계를 분석하였던 바 그 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 소맥의 출수, 성숙기는 품종 및 지역간에 고도의 유의성을 보이나 품종과 지역의 교호작용에는 유의성이 없어 품종 자체의 조만성에 따라 어느 지역에서도 안정된 반응을 보였다. 2. 등숙일수는 출수, 성숙기와 같이 어느 지역에서도 안정된 반응을 보였으나 조숙품종군들은 지역간에, 만숙품종군들은 품종간에 고도의 유의한 차이를 보였다. 3. 파성정도가 낮을수록 출수 및 성숙기가 다소빠른 경향을 보였다. 4. 소맥의 출수기의 조만은 협의의 조만성, 광주반응, 파성. 내한성 및 등숙일수 등이 관여하나 파성 및 내한성은 조숙품종들과, 광주반응 및 등숙일수는 만숙품종들과 더 높은 상관관계를 보였다. 5. 4개 시험지 각각에서 출수기에 가장 크게 기여하는 내적 요인은 협의의 조만성과 파성이었음이 확인되었으며, 내한성은 출수기와도 고도의 부의 상관관계를 보였다. 6. 소맥의 출수 및 성숙기가 빠를수록 간장 및 절간장이 짧았는데 이는 만숙품종군보다 조숙품종군에서 더 현저하였다. 7. 출수 및 성숙기는 용적중 및 월동전 경수와 부의 상관을, 그리고 일수입수와는 정상관을 보였다.

착색이 빠른 포인세티아 "Early Bird" 육성 (Breeding of early colored poinsettia "Early Bird")

  • "Early Bird"는 국립원예특작과학원에서 2007년도에 육성한 포인세티아 신품종이다. 이 품종은 2004년에 착색엽의 결각이 강하고 포엽이 밝은 적색인 'chiban'을 모본으로, 생육이 왕성하고 진한 적색 포엽의 'reedom Red'를 부본으로 교배를 실시하여 양성된 실생계통 중 선발되었다. 2005~2006년 2차에 거쳐 특성검정을 하여 '원교 D5-33을 육성하였고 2007년에 3차 특성검정과 품평회를 실시하여 최종선발 하였으며 "arly Bird"로 명명하였다. 포엽의 형태는 도란형이며 포엽폭이 넓고 포엽색은 밝은 적색이다. 잎몸은 난형이며 진한 녹색이다. 줄기색은 녹색계이며 적심을 하지 않은 상태에서 적은 수의 분지가 발생한다. 초장은 짧으며 단일처리 후 약 6.5주일이 경과하면 완전히 착색되어 출하가 가능하다. 2007년 농작물 직무육성 신품종선정위원회를 거쳐 "얼리버드(Early Bird)"로 명명하여 2008년 6월 품종보호 출원하였다.

신생혈관 연령관련황반변성에서 항혈관내피세포성장인자 주입술 시행 후 시력 반응의 의의 (Significance of Early Visual Responses to Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Age-related Macular Degeneration)

  • 목적: 신생혈관 연령관련황반변성 환자에서 유리체강 내 항혈관내피세포성장인자 주입술 1회 시행 후 1개월째 시력 반응의 정도 및 3회 시행 후 1개월째 시력 반응의 정도와 치료 시작 12개월 후의 시력과의 상관관계를 알아보고자 하였다. 대상과 방법: 신생혈관 연령관련황반변성으로 진단받은 환자들 중 유리체강 내 항혈관내피세포성장인자 주입술로 치료하면서 12개월 이상 경과관찰이 가능했던 환자 30명의 의무기록을 분석하였다. 유리체강 내 주입술 1회 시행 후 1개월째 최대교정시력을 측정하였고 3회 주입술 후 1개월째 최대교정시력을 측정하여 상승 정도(<1, 1-<3, ${\geq}3$줄; logMAR)에 따른 치료 시작 후 12개월째 최대교정시력과 비교하였다. 결과: 첫 주사 후 1개월째 1줄 미만의 시력 향상을 보인 군은 6안(20%), 1줄 이상 3줄 미만의 시력 향상을 보인 군은 7안(23.3%), 3줄 이상 시력 향상을 보인 군은 17안(56.6%)이었다. 세 번째 주사 후 1개월째 1줄 미만의 시력 향상을 보인 군은 9안(30%), 1줄 이상 3줄 미만의 시력 향상을 보인 군은 9안(30%), 3줄 이상의 시력 향상을 보인 군은 12안(40%)이었다. 로지스틱 회귀 분석 및 선형회귀분석에서 3회 주입술 후 1개월째의 3줄 이상의 시력 향상은 치료 시작 12개월 후의 3줄 이상의 시력상승과 유의한 상관관계를 보였다(p=0.04). 결론: 신생혈관 연령관련황반변성 환자에서 유리체강 내 주입술 3회 시행 후 1개월째 3줄 이상의 시력 향상 여부는 치료 시작 12개월 후의 3줄 이상의 시력예후와 통계적으로 유의한 상관관계를 보였다.

Different Phytohormonal Responses on Satsuma Mandarin (Citrus unshiu) Leaves Infected with Host-Compatible or Host-Incompatible Elsinoë fawcettii

  • Citrus scab, caused by the fungal pathogen Elsinoë fawcettii, is one of the most important fungal diseases affecting Citrus spp. Citrus scab affects young tissues, including the leaves, twigs, and fruits, and produces severe fruit blemishes that reduce the market value of fresh fruits. To study the molecular responses of satsuma mandarin (C. unshiu) to E. fawcettii, plant hormone-related gene expression was analyzed in response to host-compatible (SM16-1) and host-incompatible (DAR70024) isolates. In the early phase of infection by E. fawcettii, jasmonic acid- and salicylic acid-related gene expression was induced in response to infection with the compatible isolate. However, as symptoms advanced during the late phase of the infection, the jasmonic acid- and salicylic acid-related gene expression was downregulated. The gene expression patterns were compared between compatible and incompatible interactions. As scabs were accompanied by altered tissue growth surrounding the infection site, we conducted gibberellic acid- and abscisic acid-related gene expression analysis and assessed the content of these acids during scab symptom development. Our results showed that gibberellic and abscisic acid-related gene expression and hormonal changes were reduced and induced in response to the infection, respectively. Accordingly, we propose that jasmonic and salicylic acids play a role in the early response to citrus scab, whereas gibberellic and abscisic acids participate in symptom development.

저성장속도 화재에서의 스프링클러 헤드 동작특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Characteristics of Sprinkler Head Activation in Low Growth Rate Fire)

  • 스프링클러 설비는 화재 발생 시 화재를 초기에 제어 및 진압하는 설비로서 어떠한 화재 분위기에서도 스프링클러 헤드의 작동온도에서 정상적인 동작을 하여야 한다. 그러나 최근 화재성장속도가 느린 화재 발생 장소에서 일부 조기반응형 스프링클러 헤드가 정상적인 동작을 하지 않을 수 있다는 문제가 제기되고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 공동주택 침실규모의 모형실험 및 캐비넷형 버너를 이용하여 화재성장속도가 느린 조건을 형성하고 실제 현장에서 배관 내에 가해지는 최소압력인 0.2MPa 이상의 가압수를 공급하여 실험을 진행하였다. 실험결과 국내에서 사용되고 있는 과반수 이상의 플러쉬형 조기반응형 스프링클러 헤드에서 Cold Soldering 현상이 발생되면서 불완전하게 개방되는 것이 확인되었다. 이러한 현상은 화재 조기진압 및 제어에 실패하여 화재확산 및 인명피해의 원인이 될 수 있으므로 추가적인 연구를 통해 국내 형식승인 및 제품검사기준의 보완의 필요할 것으로 판단된다.

Impaired Extinction of Learned Contextual Fear Memory in Early Growth Response 1 Knockout Mice

  • Inductive expression of early growth response 1 (Egr-1) in neurons is associated with many forms of neuronal activity. However, only a few Egr-1 target genes are known in the brain. The results of this study demonstrate that Egr-1 knockout (KO) mice display impaired contextual extinction learning and normal fear acquisition relative to wild-type (WT) control animals. Genome-wide microarray experiments revealed 368 differentially expressed genes in the hippocampus of Egr-1 WT exposed to different phases of a fear conditioning paradigm compared to gene expression profiles in the hippocampus of KO mice. Some of genes, such as serotonin receptor 2C (Htr2c), neuropeptide B (Npb), neuronal PAS domain protein 4 (Npas4), NPY receptor Y1 (Npy1r), fatty acid binding protein 7 (Fabp7), and neuropeptide Y (Npy) are known to regulate processing of fearful memories, and promoter analyses demonstrated that several of these genes contained Egr-1 binding sites. This study provides a useful list of potential Egr-1 target genes which may be regulated during fear memory processing.

The Use of Fermented Soybean Meals during Early Phase Affects Subsequent Growth and Physiological Response in Broiler Chicks

  • The objectives of this experiment was to evaluate the subsequent growth and organ weights, blood profiles and cecal microbiota of broiler chicks fed pre-starter diets containing fermented soybean meal products during early phase. A total of nine hundred 1-d-old chicks were randomly assigned into six groups with six replicates of 25 chicks each. The chicks were fed control pre-starter diet with dehulled soybean meal (SBM) or one of five experimental diets containing fermented SBM products (Bacillus fermented SBM [BF-SBM], yeast by product and Bacillus fermented SBM [YBF-SBM]; Lactobacillus fermented SBM 1 [LF-SBM 1]; Lactobacillus fermented SBM 2 [LF-SBM 2]) or soy protein concentrate (SPC) for 7 d after hatching, followed by 4 wk feeding of commercial diets without fermented SBMs or SPC. The fermented SBMs and SPC were substituted at the expense of dehulled SBM at 3% level on fresh weight basis. The body weight (BW) during the starter period was not affected by dietary treatments, but BW at 14 d onwards was significantly higher (p<0.05) in chicks that had been fed BF-SBM and YBF-SBM during the early phase compared with the control group. The feed intake during grower and finisher phases was not affected (p>0.05) by dietary treatments. During total rearing period, the daily weight gains in six groups were 52.0 (control), 57.7 (BF-SBM), 58.5 (YBF-SBM), 52.0 (LF-SBM 1), 56.7 (LF-SBM 2), and 53.3 g/d (SPC), respectively. The daily weight gain in chicks fed diet containing BF-SBM, YBF-SBM, and LF-SBM 2 were significantly higher values (p<0.001) than that of the control group. Chicks fed BF-SBM, YBF-SBM, and LF-SBM 2 had significantly lower (p<0.01) feed conversion ratio compared with the control group. There were no significant differences in the relative weight of various organs and blood profiles among groups. Cecal microbiota was altered by dietary treatments. At 35 d, chicks fed on the pre-starter diets containing BF-SBM and YBF-SBM had significantly increased (p<0.001) lactic acid bacteria, but lowered Coli-form bacteria in cecal contents compared with those fed the control diet. The number of Bacillus spp. was higher (p<0.001) in all groups except for LF-SBM 1 compared with control diet-fed chicks. At 7 d, jejunal villi were significantly lengthened (p<0.001) in chicks fed the fermented SBMs vs control diet. Collectively, the results indicate that feeding of fermented SBMs during early phase are beneficial to the subsequent growth performance in broiler chicks. BF-SBM and YBF-SBM showed superior overall growth performance as compared with unfermented SBM and SPC.

Caffeine Induces the Stress Response and Up-Regulates Heat Shock Proteins in Caenorhabditis elegans

  • Caffeine has both positive and negative effects on physiological functions in a dose-dependent manner. C. elegans has been used as an animal model to investigate the effects of caffeine on development. Caffeine treatment at a high dose (30 mM) showed detrimental effects and caused early larval arrest. We performed a comparative proteomic analysis to investigate the mode of action of high-dose caffeine treatment in C. elegans and found that the stress response proteins, heat shock protein (HSP)-4 (endoplasmic reticulum [ER] chaperone), HSP-6 (mitochondrial chaperone), and HSP-16 (cytosolic chaperone), were induced and their expression was regulated at the transcriptional level. These findings suggest that high-dose caffeine intake causes a strong stress response and activates all three stress-response pathways in the worms, including the ER-, mitochondrial-, and cytosolic pathways. RNA interference of each hsp gene or in triple combination retarded growth. In addition, caffeine treatment stimulated a food-avoidance behavior (aversion phenotype), which was enhanced by RNAi depletion of the hsp-4 gene. Therefore, up-regulation of hsp genes after caffeine treatment appeared to be the major responses to alleviate stress and protect against developmental arrest.

The Effect of COVID-19 Pandemic on Stock Market: An Empirical Study in Saudi Arabia

  • The objective of the study is to investigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Saudi Arabia stock market. The study relied on the data of the daily closing stock market price index Tadawul All Share Index (TASI), and the number of daily cases infected with COVID-19 during the period from March 15, 2020, to August 10, 2020. The study employs the Vector Auto-Regressive (VAR) model, the Impulse Response Function (IRF) and Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (ARCH) models. The results of the correlation matrix and the Impulse Response Function (IRF) show that stock market returns responded negatively to the growth in COVID-19 infected cases during the pandemic. The results of ARCH model confirmed the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic on KSA stock market returns. The results also showed that the negative market reaction was strong during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study concluded that stock market in KSA responded quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic; the response varies over time according to the stage of the pandemic. However, the Saudi government's response time and size of the stimulus package have played an important role in alleviating the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Saudi Arabia Stock Market.

단일식물의 개화유도를 조절하는 개화억제요소의 규명과 Phytochrome의 역할에 관한 연구 (Studies on Inhibition Factors and the Role of Phytochrome in the Floral Induction in Short-day Plants)

  • Inhibition of flowering in Lemna perpusilla 6746 by 30 mM sucrose was reversed by the addition of acetylcholine (>$10^{-4}M) supplemented with 10^{-4}M$ ascorbic acid to 1/10-strength Hunter's growth medium. The reversible effect of acetylcholine was found to be greater at early stages of flowering than in the later period. Promotive effects of both acetylcholine ($10^{-3}M) and eserine(10^{-5}M$) on flowering in the short-day plant under various photoperiodic conditions were studied. It was indicated that the application decreased length of the critical dark period for the floral induction, and it was also shown that the endogenous status of acetylcholine was involved in the floral response which had a correlation with phytochrome. Interruption of inductive dark periods by red irradiation (1min) immediately followed by far-red light (1 min) completely inhibited flowering, while the addition of acetylcholine and eserine to the medium under the same condition slightly promoted flowering, indicating possible involvement of phytochrome system in acetylcholine activity for photoperiodic sensitivity of floral response in Lemna perpusilla 6746.
