Most structures are expected to deform beyond the limit of linearly elastic behavior when subjected to strong ground motion. Seismic evaluation of structure requires an estimation of the structural performance in terms of displacement demand imposed by earthquakes on the structure. The nonlinear response history analysis(NRHA) among various nonlinear analysis methods is the most accurate to compute seismic performance of structures, but it is time-consuming and necessitate more efforts. The nonlinear approximate methods, which is more practical and reliable tools for predicting seismic behavior of structures, are extensively studied. Among them, the capacity spectrum method(CSM) is conceptually simple, but the iterative procedure is time-consuming and may sometimes lead to no solution or multiple solutions. This paper considers a nonlinear direct spectrum method(NDSM) to evaluate seismic performance of mixed building structures without iterative computations, given dynamic property T from stiffness skeleton curve and nonlinear pseudo acceleration $A_{y}$/g and/or ductility ratio $\mu$ from response spectrum. The nonlinear response history analysis has been performed and analyzed with various earthquakes for estimation of reliability and practicality of NDSM with mixed building structures.

Viscous dampers have been utilized as bearings and STU`s (Shock Transmission Unit) in earthquake resistant designs for bridges. Some viscous dampers are used as energy dissipators on one hand, but some dampers such as STU`s are used as fixing devices during an earthquake on the other hand. This paper discusses the effect of viscous dampers on the response of bridge with respect to the magnitude of damping coefficients. For this purpose, a typical bridge was taken as an example, and time-history dynamic analysis have been carried out. The input seismic data used in the analyses are relevant to the response spectra in the Koreans design code. The results show that there is an optimum value of coefficient considered most effective in the design. A STU with a large value of coefficient seems to make its support fixed. The response of the bridge is not much sensitive to the variation of the damping coefficients.

The seismic behavior of framed structure with Chevron-type bucking restrained braces were investigated and their behavior factors were evaluated following the procedure proposed in ATC-19 & ATC-34. Two types of structures, building frame systems and dual systems, with 4, 8, 12, and 16 stories were designed per the IBC 2000, the AISC LRFD and the AISC/SEAOC Recommended Provisions for BRBF. Nonlinear static pushover analyses were carried out to observe the plastic hinge formation and to identify the loads and the displacements at the yield and the ultimate states. Time history analyses were also carried out to compute the permanent displacement md the dissipated hysteretic energy. According to the analysis results, the response modification factors of model structures fumed out to be larger than what is proposed in the provision in low story structures, and a little smaller in medium-story structures. The dual systems, even though designed with smaller seismic load, showed superior static and dynamic performances.
This paper presents results from a study to extend a performance-based shearwall selection procedure to take into account the contributions of nonstructural finish materials (such as stucco and gypsum wallboard), construction quality issues, and their effects on the displacement performance of engineered wood shearwalls subject to seismic loading. Shearwall performance is evaluated in terms of peak displacements under seismic loading (characterized by a suite of ordinary ground motion records) considering different combinations of performance levels (drift limits) and seismic hazard. Shearwalls are analyzed using nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis with global assembly hysteretic parameters determined by fitting to actual shearwall test data. Peak displacement distributions, determined from sets of analyses using each of the ground motion records taken to characterize the seismic hazard, are postprocessed into performance curves, design charts, and fragility curves which can be used for risk-based design and assessment applications.
Structures in seismic regions are designed to dissipate seismic energy input through inelastic deformations. Structural or component failure occurs when the hysteretic energy demand for a structure or component subject to an earthquake ground motion (EQGM) exceeds its hysteretic energy dissipation capacity. This paper presents a study on identifying the hysteretic energy demand and distribution throughout the height of regular steel moment resisting frames (SMRFs) subject to severe EQGMs. For this purpose, non-linear dynamic time history (NDTH) analyses were carried out on regular low-, medium-, and high-rise steel SMRFs. An ensemble of ninety EQGMs recorded on different soil types was used in the study. The results show that the hysteretic energy demand decreases from the bottom stories to the upper stories and for high-rise structures, most of the hysteretic energy is dissipated by the bottom stories. The decrease is quite significant, especially, for medium- and high-rise structures.

Performance-based design concept is needed to evaluate the seismic capacity of building. In this study, the method estimating the performance point of the spatial structures based on capacity spectrum method (CSM) is proposed. And for efficient evaluation for the performance point of the spatial structures, the algorithm to convert spatial structural system to ESDOF system is simulated Its efficiency is confirmed by comparing with time history analysis of full model. And dynamic behaviors of spatial structures are examined by using this method. At last, evaluation of structural performance according to variation of stiffness after plastic deformation on the substructures is carried out.
The purpose of this article is to develop a dynamic model of organizational capabilities and knowledge creation, and at the same time identify the organizational capability factors for effective knowledge creation, by empirically analyzing the history of new Quinolone antibacterial drug compound (LB20304a) discovery process at LG, as a case in point. Major findings of this study are as follows. First, in a science-based area such as drug development, the core of successful knowledge creation lies in creative combination of different bodies of scientific explicit knowledge. Second, the greater the difficulty of learning external knowledge, the more tacit knowledge is needed for the recipient firm to effectively exploit that knowledge. Third, in science-based sector such as pharmaceutical industry, the key for successful knowledge creation lies in the capability of recruiting and retaining star scientists. Finally, for effective knowledge creation, a firm must keep its balance among three dimensions of organizational capabilities: local, process, architectural capabilities.
Since it is difficult to analytically express the Melnikov function when a dynamic system possesses multiple saddle fixed points with homoclinic and/or heteroclinic orbits, this paper investigates a vehicle model with nonlinear suspension spring and hysteretic damping element, which exhibits multiple heteroclinic orbits in the unperturbed system. First, an algorithm for Melnikov integrals is developed based on the Melnikov method. And then the amplitude threshold of road excitation at the onset of chaos is determined. By numerical simulation, the existence of chaos in the present system is verified via time history curves, phase portrait plots and $Poincar{\acute{e}}$ maps. Finally, in order to further identify the chaotic motion of the nonlinear system, the maximal Lyapunov exponent is also adopted. The results indicate that the numerical method of estimating chaotic threshold is an effective one to complicated vehicle systems.
The structural members under seismic loading actually show inelastic behavior, so the inelastic responses should be calculated for the seismic design of structures or estimating the structural damage level. Although direct time history analysis may calculate the exact dynamic nonlinear responses for given ground motions, this approach involves a high computational cost and long period. Therefore, it should be developed the approach to estimate nonlinear responses for the practical purpose. The artificial earthquake accelerograms were generated to obtain the smoothed responses spectra, and the samples of generated accelerogram for each seismic event was used to examine average nonlinear response spectra. The stabilized response spectra for each earthquake event was used to evaluate the effects of various yield strength ratios, damping values and nonlinear hysteretic models. The approach, which can simply predict the nonlinear seismic responses of structures, was shown in this study.

The large mass method for dynamic analysis of statically determinate beams subjected to in-phase support motions is justified by showing that the equation of motion of the beams under consideration is equivalent to that of large mass model of the beam when an appropriate large mass ratio is employed. The accuracy of the stress responses based on the beam large mass method is investigated through careful numerical tests. The numerical results are compared to analytic solutions and the comparison shows that the large mass method yields not only the time history of motion but also the distributions of bending moment and shear force accurately.
