The dynamic response of a cracked functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) under transient anti-plane shear mechanical and in-plane electrical loads is investigated in the present paper. It is assumed that the electroelastic material properties of the FGPM vary smoothly in the form of an exponential function along the thickness of the strip. The analysis is conducted on the basis of the unified (or natural) crack boundary condition which is related to the ellipsoidal crack parameters. By using the Laplace and Fourier transforms, the problem is reduced to the solutions of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. Numerical results for the stress intensity factor and crack sliding displacement are presented to show the influences of the elliptic crack parameters, the electric field, FGPM gradation, crack length, and electromechanical coupling coefficient.

Measuring dynamic fracture toughness of brittle and small ceramic specimen is very difficult in a SHPB (Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar). As a countermeasure to this difficulty, a dynamic fracture toughness measuring method by the Chevron-notch ceramic specimen was proposed. Tested chevron specimens were of Chevron notch angles of 90$^{\circ}$, 100$^{\circ}$ and 110$^{\circ}$. Through finite element analysis, shape parameters of the Chevron-notch specimens according to notch angles were calculated. And the static fracture tough1ess of the Chevron-notch alumina specimen was measured as 3.8MPa√m similar to that of CT specimen with a precrack. Dynamic fracture toughness was 4.5MPa√m slightly higher than the static one. It was shown in this study that the proposed Chevron-notch specimens are valid to measure dynamic fracture toughness of extremely brittle materials such as ceramic.

For BEM analyses of the impact problems of dissimilar materials, the connected multi-region method using perfect bonded conditions on the interface boundaries was added to two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program for a single region analysis. It was confirmed that the BEM results of impact problems of a single-region and multi-regions for a homogeneous isotropic material are agreed well. The two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program combined with connected multi-region method was applied to analyse several impact problems of dissimilar materials. Also the feasibility of BEM impact analyses was investigated for dissimilar materials by the analysis of the BEM results for impact problems of dissimilar materials in terms of physical aspects. As for an application, the two-dimensional Laplace transformed BEM concerning impact problems of cracks at the interface of dissimilar materials and the determinating process of the dynamic stress intensity factors by extrapolation method are presented in this paper.

This paper describes a dynamic fracture behaviors of structural elements under elastic or elasto-plastic stress waves in two dimensional space. The governing equation of this problem has the type of hyperbolic partial differential equation, which consists of the equation of motions and incremental elasto-plastic constitutive equations. To solve this problem we introduce Zwas' method which is based on the finite difference method. Additionally, in order to deal with the dynamic behavior of elasto-plastic problems, an elasto-plastic loading path in the stress space is proposed to model the plastic yield phenomenon. Based on the result of this computation, the dynamic stress intensity factor at the crack tip of an elastic material is calculated, and the time history of a plastic zone of a elasto-plastic material is to be shown.

Analysis on failure of the panel glass under mechanical shock is the main topic of this study. Since the glass for the LCD panel is thin, it needs to be designed to have enough toughness against mechanical shock. In this paper, a process of estimating fracture of the panel glass is proposed to guarantee reliability of the product. The fracture toughness of the panel glass is used as a criterion of the fracture based on an experimental approach. The stress intensity factor was calculated considering a model with the largest initial crack size on a cut surface and with the boundary force obtained from a dynamic finite element analysis. Critical surface roughness on the cut surface of a typical glass panel, to prevent fracture in case of bending mode, is obtained.

The integrity of the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV) is affected by the neutrons bombarding the vessel wall leading to embrittlement. This irradiation-induced embrittlement leads to reduction in the fracture toughness of RPV materials. This paper presents a comparative study of typical Optimized Power Reactor (OPR)1000 reactor pressure-temperature (P-T) limit curves using the pre-2006 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) editions used in the power plant and the current ASME edition of 2010. The current ASME Code utilizes critical reference stress intensity factor based on the lower bound of static, while the Pre-2006 ASME editions are based the critical reference stress intensity factor based on the lower bound of static, dynamic and crack arrest. Model-Based Systems Engineering approach was used to evaluate ASME Code Section XI Appendix G for generating the P-T limit curves. The results obtained from this analysis indicate decrease in conservatism in P-T limit curves constructed using the current 2017 ASME code, which can potentially increase operational flexibility and plant safety. Hence it is recommended to use ASME code edition after 2006 be used in all operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) to establish P-T limit curve.

The notched Charpy and Izod impact tests are the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on ploymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical strain energy release rates(Gc) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An Instrumented Charpy Impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture properties in addition to total fracture properties and maximum critical loads. The stress intensity factor Kd was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well.

Catastrophic fracture cannot be avoided after cracks(initiated from pre-existing defects) propagate rapidly with speeds comparable to a sound wave velocity of the materials. Preventing catastropic failure, crack arrest fracture toughness defined from dynamic(or kinetic) fracture mechanics point of view has been introduced in determining accurate and/or proper crack arrest fracture toughness of a material. For the past decades, many studies have been carried out to render proper theoretical and experimental backgrounds on the use of the static plain strain crack arrest fracture toughness, $K_{1a}$ (which seems to be a material property). $K_{1a}$ has been used to predict the performance of thick walled structures and has been considered as a measure of the ability of a material to stop a fast running crack. Determination of such a material property is of prime importance to the nuclear reactor pressure vessel and bridge materials industries. However, standards procedures for measuring toughness associated with fast running cracks are yet to exist. This study intends to give insight on the determination of the crack arrest fracture toughness of materials such as polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), SM45C-steel, and A1 7075-T6. The effects of crack jump lengths and fast crack initiation stress intensity factor on the determination of $K_{1a}$ have been experimentally observed.erved.

The bond-based peridynamic model is able to capture many of the essential characteristics of dynamic brittle fracture observed in experiments: crack branching, crack-path instability, asymmetries of crack paths, successive branching, secondary cracking at right angles from existing crack surfaces, etc. In this paper we investigate the influence of the stress waves on the crack branching angle and the velocity profile. We observe that crack branching in peridynamics evolves as the phenomenology proposed by the experimental evidence: when a crack reaches a critical stage(macroscopically identified by its stress intensity factor) it splits into two or more branches, each propagating with the same speed as the parent crack, but with a much reduced process zone.
In this paper, the anti-plane transient response of a central crack normal to the interface between a piezoelectric ceramics and two same elastic materials is considered. The assumed crack surfaces are permeable. By virtue of integral transform methods, the electro elastic mixed boundary problems are formulated as two set of dual integral equations, which, in turn, are reduced to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind in the Laplace transform domain. Time domain solutions are obtained by inverting Laplace domain solutions using a numerical scheme. Numerical values on the quasi-static stress intensity factor and the dynamic energy release rate are presented to show the dependences upon the geometry, material combination, electromechanical coupling coefficient and electric field.
