In this paper, we consider a dynamic shape control problem with an example of controlling a flexible beam shape. Mathematical formulations are obtained by employing the Green's function approach. Necessary conditions for optimality are derived by considering the quadratic performance criteria. Numerical results for both of the dynamic and the static cases are obtained and compared.

This paper presents the design, modelling and, simulation and experimental results of a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator based critical motion control application. Dynamic performance of SMA and its ability in replacing servo motor is studied for which the famous open loop unstable balancing ball and beam system direct driven by antagonistic SMA is designed and developed. Simulation uses the mathematical model of ball and beam structure derived from the first principles and model estimated for the SMA actuator by system identification. A PID based cascade control system consisting of two loops is designed and control of ball trajectory for various target positions with settling time as control parameter is verified experimentally. The results demonstrate the performance of SMA for a complicated i.e., under actuated, highly nonlinear unstable system, and thereby it's dynamic behaviour. Control strategies bring out the effectiveness of the actuator and its possible application to much more complex applications such as in aerospace control and robotics.
Optimal shape of the NFR suspension is studied and developed to improve the dynamic performance and reduce the vibration of the suspension system including a optical head slider. Since accurate position control and stability of the slider motion are highly required in NFR due to the narrower track width and the heavier slider than HDD slider with the low flying height, the dynamic characteristics of the suspension are very important to the mechanical performance of the system. The first natural frequencies in flexural and lateral motion of the suspension are critical factors affecting the dynamics and stability of the flying head, so that the dynamic parameters should be designed properly to avoid an excessive vibration or a crash of the slider on the disk. This paper optimizes the shape of the suspension based on homogenization method in NASTRAN and develops a new suspension shape for NFR system. The suspension is tested on experiment to verify the improvement of the dynamic characteristics.
This paper is concerned with static and dynamic shape control of a laminated Bernoulli-Euler beam hosting a uniformly distributed array of resistively interconnected piezoelectric patches. We present an analytical one-dimensional model for a laminated piezoelectric beam with material discontinuities within the framework of Bernoulli-Euler and extent the model by a network of resistors which are connected to several piezoelectric patch actuators. The voltage of only one piezoelectric patch is prescribed: we answer the question how to design the interconnected resistive electric network in order to annihilate lateral vibrations of a cantilever. As a practical example, a cantilever with eight patch actuators under the influence of a tip-force is studied. It is found that the deflection at eight arbitrary points along the beam axis may be controlled independently, if the local action of the piezoelectric patches is equal in magnitude, but opposite in sign, to the external load. This is achieved by the proper design of the resistive network and a suitable choice of the input voltage signal. The validity of our method is exact in the static case for a Bernoulli-Euler beam, but it also gives satisfactory results at higher frequencies and for transient excitations. As long as a certain non-dimensional parameter, involving the number of the piezoelectric patches, the sum of the resistances in the electric network and the excitation frequency, is small, the proposed shape control method is approximately fulfilled for dynamic load excitations. We evaluate the feasibility of the proposed shape control method with a more refined model, by comparing the results of our one-dimensional calculations based on the extended Bernoulli-Euler equations to three-dimensional electromechanically coupled finite element results in ANSYS 12.0. The results with the simple Bernoulli-Euler model agree well with the three-dimensional finite element results.
In this study, we conducted a vibration fatigue analysis of the lower control arm in a vehicle suspension system. The vehicle was driven during the tests so that the dynamic effects could be taken into account. The dynamic load of the frequency domain was superimposed on the frequency response analysis. We performed a virtual proving ground test using multi-body dynamics, along with a finite element analysis and fatigue life predictions. Shape optimization was also considered using the design of the experimental approach, and a response surface analysis was performed to improve the durability performance of the lower control arm. We identified the elements that had the most influence on the optimal shape of the finite element model and analyzed the sensitivity of those elements. Then the optimal points that minimized the amount of damage to the areas of interest were determined through a response surface analysis. The results suggested that the fatigue life of the model increased as its mass was not increased excessively, and demonstrated that these design procedures yielded an appropriate optimized lower control arm model.
This paper proposes a new measure of cost function ruggedness in local optimization with DEAS. DEAS is a computational optimization method developed since 2002 and has been applied to various engineering fields with success. Since DEAS is a recent optimization method which is rarely introduced in Korean, this paper first provides a brief overview and description of DEAS. In minimizing cost function with this non-gradient method, information on function shape measured automatically will enhance search capability. Considering the search strategies of DEAS are well designed with binary matrix structures, analysis of search behaviors will produce beneficial shape information. This paper deals with a simple quadratic function contained with various magnitudes of noise, and DEAS finds local minimum yielding ruggedness measure of given cost function. The proposed shape information will be directly used in improving DEAS performance in future work.
The influences of initial damage paths and aftershock (AS) spectral shape on the assessment of AS collapse fragility are investigated. To do this, a four-story ductile reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure is employed as the study case. The far-field earthquake records recommended by FEMA P695 are used as AS ground motions. The AS incremental dynamic analyses are performed for the damaged structure. To examine the effect of initial damage paths, a total of six kinds of initial damage paths are adopted to simulate different initial damage states of the structure by pushover analysis and dynamic analysis. For the pushover-based initial damage paths, the structure is "pushed" using either uniform or triangle lateral load pattern to a specified damage state quantified by the maximum inter-story drift ratio. Among the dynamic initial damage paths, one single mainshock ground motion or a suite of mainshock ground motions are used in the incremental dynamic analyses to generate a specified initial damage state to the structure. The results show that the structure collapse capacity is reduced as the increase of initial damage, and the initial damage paths show a significant effect on the calculated collapse capacities of the damaged structure (especially at severe damage states). To account for the effect of AS spectral shape, the AS collapse fragility can be adjusted at different target values of ${\varepsilon}$ by using the linear correlation model between the collapse capacity (in term of spectral intensity) and the AS ${\varepsilon}$ values, and coefficients of this linear model is found to be associated with the initial damage states.
In this paper we design and evaluate the longitudinal nonlinear N(aub)z-CSAS(Command and Stability Augmentation System) flight control law in \"DMI(Dynamic Model Inversion)-method\" and classical \"Gain Scheduling-method\", respectively, to meet the handling quality requirements associated with push-over pull-up maneuver. It is told that the flight control law designed in \"DM-method\" is adequate to the full flight regime without gain scheduling and is efficient to produce the time response shape desired to the handling quality requirements. On the contrary, the flight control law designed in \"Gain Scheduling-method\" is easy to be implemented in flight control computer and insensitive to variation of the actuator model characteristics.n of the actuator model characteristics.
To address the convergence issue of power control algorithms, a number of algorithms have been developed hat shape the dynamics of up-link power control for cellular network. Power algorithms based on fixed point iterations can be accelerated by the use of various methods, one of the simplest being the use of Newton iterations, however, this method has the disadvantage which not only needs derivatives of the cost function but also may be weak to noisy environment. we showed performance of the power control schemes to solve the fixed point problem under static or stationary channel. They proved goof performance to solve the fixed point problem due to their predictor based optimal control and quadratic convergence rate. Here, we apply the proposed power control schemes to the problem of the dynamic channel or to dynamic time varying link gains. The rigorous simulation results demonstrated the validity of our approach.
This work presents the reconstruction of impact force produced by the collision between two elastic structures. The 2-DOF impactor was designed. The shape control of impact farce using correlations of the dynamic characteristics and impact force history between two elastic structures is accomplished. The effects of the relative motion between impactor and elastic structure on the impact force shape are studied. Reconstruction characteristics of impact force in cantilever beam are reviewed.
