Chlorine is widely used as a disinfectant in drinking-water systems throughout the world. Chlorine residual was used as an indicator for prediction of water quality in water distribution systems. The variation of chlorine residual in drinking water distribution systems of Suwon city was simulated using EPANET. EPANET is a computerized simulation model which predicts the dynamic hydraulic and water quality behavior within a water distribution system operating over an extended time period. Sampling and analysis were performed to calibrated the computer model in 1999 (Aug. Summer). Water quality variables used in simulations are temperature, roughness coefficient, pipe diameter, pipe length, water demand, velocity and so on. Extended water residence time affected water quality due to the extended reaction time in some areas. All area showed the higher concentration of chlorine residual than 0.2mg/l(standard). So it can be concluded that any area in Suwon city is not in biological regrowth problem. Rechlorination turned out to be an useful method for uniform concentration of free chlorine residual in distribution system. The cost of disinfectant could be saved remarkably by cutting down the initial chlorine concentration to the level which guarantees minimum concentration (0.2mg/l) throughout the distribution system.
The flap-lag-torsion coupled aeroelastic behavior of a hingeless rotor blade with composite flexures in hovering flight has been investigated by using the finite element method. The quasisteady strip theory with dynamic inflow effects is used to obtain the aerodynamic loads acting on the blade. The governing differential equations of motion undergoing moderately large displacements and rotations are derived using the Hamilton's principle. The flexures used in the present model are composed of two composite plates which are rigidly attached together. The lead-lag flexure is located inboard of the flap flexure. A mixed warping model that combines the St. Versant torsion and the Vlasov torsion is developed to describe the twist behavior of the composite flexure. Numerical simulations are carried out to correlate the present results with experimental test data and also to identify the effects of structural couplings of the composite flexures on the aeroelastic stability of the blade. The prediction results agree well with other experimental data. The effects of elastic couplings such as pitch-flap, pitch-lag, and flap-lag couplings on the stability behavior of the composite blades are also investigated.
In this paper, a preventive transmission rate decision algorithm, called PTRD, is proposed for the transmission of live video over networks with dynamic bandwidth allocation capability. Frame analyzer predicts the bit-rates of future frames before encoding by analyzing the source information such as spatial variances and the degree of scene changes. By using the predicted bit-rates, transmission rate bounds are derived from the constraints of encoder and decoder buffers. To resolve the problem of renegotiation cost increment due to frequent renegotiations, the PTRD algorithm is presented to decide transmission rates considering the elapsed time after the recent renegotiation and the perceived video quality. From the simulation results, compared to the normalized LMS based method, PTRD is shown to achieve high channel utilization with low renegotiation cost and no delay violation.
In foil bearings, the friction between bumps and their mating surfaces is the major factor which exerts great influence on the bearing performance. From this point of view, many efforts have been made to improve the understanding of the influence of the friction on the foil bearing performance by developing a number of analytical models. However, most of them did not consider the hysteretic behavior of the foil structure resulting from the friction. The present work developed the static structural model in which hysteretic behavior of the friction was considered. The foil structure was modeled using finite element method and the algorithm which determines the conditions of the contact nodes and the directions of the friction forces was used to take into account the friction. The developed model was integrated into the foil bearing prediction code to investigate the effects of the friction on the static performance of the bearing. The results of analysis show that multiple static equilibrium positions are presented for the one static load under the influence of the friction, inferring its great effects on the dynamic performance. However, the effect of friction on the minimum film thickness which determines load capacity of the bearing is negligible.

This paper concerns the design and application of an electro-rheological (ER) fluid damper to semiactive vibration control of rotor systems. In particular, the system under present study is constructed structurally flexible in order to explore multiple critical speeds within operation range. To this end, the dynamic models of the proposed ER damper and its associated amplifier are derived in the first place. Subsequently entire rotor system model is assembled along with the dynamics of the end effector based on a finite element method enabling prediction as to its free and forced vibration characteristics. Next, an artificial intelligent (AI) feedback controller is synthesized taking into account the peculiarity of Coulomb damping effect in rotor applications. Finally, computational and experimental results are presented including model validation and control performances. In practice, such an AI control proved effective whether the spin speed was either before or after critical speeds.

The recent advance of sensor networks and ubiquitous techniques allow collecting and analyzing of the data which overcome the limitation imposed by time and space in real-time for making decisions. Also, analysis and prediction of collected data can support useful and necessary information to users. The collected data in sensor networks environment is the stream data which has continuous, unlimited and sequential properties. Because of the continuous, unlimited and large volume properties of stream data, managing stream data is difficult. And the stream data needs dynamic processing method because of the memory constraint and access limitation. Accordingly, we analyze correlation stream data using principal component analysis. And using result of analysis, it helps users for making decisions.
The lifetime of power train components can be improved dramatically by finding crack initiation points with suitable software tools and optimization of the critical areas. With increasing capacities of computers the prediction of the lifetime for components by numerical methods gets more and more important. This paper discusses some applications of the outstanding fatigue simulation program FEMFAT supporting the assessment of uniaxially and multiaxially loaded components (as well as welding seams and spot joints). The theory applied in FEMFAT differs in some aspects from classical approaches like the nominal stress concept or the local one and can be characterized by the term "influence parameter method". The specimen S/N-curve is locally modified by different influence parameters as stress-gradient to take into account notch effects, mean-stress influence which is quantified by means of a Haigh-diagram, surface roughness and treatments, temperature, technological size, etc. It is possible to consider plastic deformations resulting in mean-stress rearrangements. The dynamic loading of power train components is very often multiaxial, e.g. the stress state at each time is not proportional to one single stress state. Hence, the directions of the principal axes vary with time. We will present the way how such complex load situations can be handled with FEMFAT by the examples of a crank case and a gear box.

A finite element model for the non-linear dynamic analysis of a reinforced concrete (RC) containment shell of a nuclear power plant subjected to extreme loads such as impact and earthquake is presented in this work. The impact is modeled by using an uncoupled approach in which a load function is applied at the impact zone. The earthquake load is modeled by prescribing ground accelerations at the base of the structure. The nuclear containment is discretized spatially by using 20-node brick finite elements. The concrete in compression is modeled by using a modified $Dr{\ddot{u}}cker$-Prager elasto-plastic constitutive law where strain rate effects are considered. Cracking of concrete is modeled by using a smeared cracking approach where the tension-stiffening effect is included via a strain-softening rule. A model based on fracture mechanics, using the concept of constant fracture energy release, is used to relate the strain softening effect to the element size in order to guaranty mesh independency in the numerical prediction. The reinforcing bars are represented by incorporated membrane elements with a von Mises elasto-plastic law. Two benchmarks are used to verify the numerical implementation of the present model. Results are presented graphically in terms of displacement histories and cracking patterns. Finally, the influence of the shear transfer model used for cracked concrete as well as the effect due to a base slab incorporation in the numerical modeling are analyzed.
Estimating dimensions of attractors are the most basic tools to analyze properties of chaotical dynamic systems. In this paper, we estimate correlation dimensions of meteorological variables, such as wind speed (v) and temperature (T) observed in Kimhae International Airport when the land-sea breeze circulation is appeared and find low non-integer values that reflect the deterministic chaos characterizing the dynamics. We compare the results with the correlation dimensions of 2-dimensional model that is calculated by finite element method. Though the correlation dimensions of the calculated wind speed ( v) are less than those of the observed wind speed ( v), we can suggest that the land-sea breeze circulation has not a unique mechanism. The land-sea breeze phenomenon is a complicated dynamics, which is constructed with various scale motions of atmosphere. In further research, we hope to find more accurate dynamics of land-sea breeze through wide observations and using of more sophisticated prediction models.

Tensile and low cycle fatigue (LCF) tests on prior cold worked 316L stainless steel were carried out at various temperatures from room temperature to 650$^{\circ}C$. At all test temperatures, cold worked material showed the tendency of higher strength and lower ductility compared with those of solution treated material. The embrittlement of material occurred in the temperature region from 300$^{\circ}C$ to 600$^{\circ}C$ due to dynamic strain aging. Following initial cyclic hardening for a few cycles, cycling softening was observed to dominate until failure occurred during LCF deformation, and the cyclic softening behavior strongly depended on temperature and strain amplitude. Non-Masing behavior was observed at all test temperatures and hysteresis energy curve method was employed to describe the stress-strain hysteresis loops at half$.$life. The prediction shows a good agreement with the experimental results.
