Electrorheological(ER) fluid is a kind of smart material with variable shear stress and dynamic viscosity under various electric field intensity. Electric field can control the damping characteristics of ER damper. The objective of this study is the analysis of the performance of ER damper and its application to shock absorber. Idealized nonlinear Bingham plastic shear flow model is used to predict the velocity profile between electrodes. Cylindrical dashpot ER damper with moving electrode is constructed and tested under various electric fields. The analytic and experimental results for damping force are compared and discussed. Drop test system using ER damper is prepared to identify transient vibration characteristics. The rebound is eased as the applied electric field increases. When semi-active control algorithm is applied, rebound phenomenon disappears and vibration energy level decays faster than the case of zero electric field.

The dynamic characteristics such as natural frequency, mode shape and damping ratio are most important parameters in the high-speed railway bridges rather than general roadway bridges. Also, the need to know the dynamic behavior of bridges greatly increased in recent years. In the early of 1990s, to design the high-speed railway bridges, damping ratio recommended in general code was 2.5~7.5%. However, these values were not applied in all cases. Therefore, obtaining the damping value of specific structures is important to get the correct variable for design of high-speed railway bridges. The purpose of this study is mainly to obtain the damping ratio of high-speed railway bridges. The average damping ratio of high-speed railway bridges evaluated from a field test is about 2.4%.

A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement. Theoretical results have shown that the effect of vehicle speed is significant and that it is in part due to the frequency-dependent

It is necessary to estimate the dynamic characteristics of stay cables ie., the natural frequencies and the damping ratios of the stay cables to design cable damper for appropriate mitigation of cable vibrations and/or to estimate the tension of cables in service. In this study, a cable exciting robot for evaluating dynamic characteristics of stay cables has been developed, and the feasibility of the developed system has been demonstrated through a field test on the stay cable installed at the test yard of Highway and Transportation Technology Institute (HTTI). The dynamic characteristics of the stay cable were estimated based on acceleration data as well as displacement measured by digital image processing technique.
Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids undergo a phase-change when subjected to an external electric field, and this phase-change typically manifests itself as a many-order-of magnitude change in the rheological behavior. This paper presents experimental results on material properties for an ER fluids of arabic gum components subjected to electrical fatigues. As a first step, ER fluids are made of arabic gum 25% of particle weight-concentration. Following the construction of test mechanism for estimated durability of ER fluid, the dynamic yield stress, shear stress and current density of the ER fluids are experimentally distilled as a function of DC electric field. The durability estimation of operated ER fluids are distilled and compared with those of unused ER fluids. In addition, the surface roughness of the employed electrode for copper and aluminum are evaluated as a function of the number of the electric-field cycles.
PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to evaluate the physical properties of recycled asphalt mixtures reinforced with glass fiber. METHODS : Firstly, mixing design was conducted on recycled asphalt mixture for use of 50% recycled aggregate. Various laboratory tests were performed on four types of recycled asphalt mixtures with different glass fiber content to evaluate the physical properties. The laboratory tests include indirect tensile strength test, dynamic modulus test, Hamburg wheel tracking test and tensile-strength ratio to evaluate cracks, rutting and moisture resistance of mixtures. RESULTS : The indirect tensile strength of fiber reinforced glass increased about 139.4%. As a result of comparing the master curves obtained by the dynamic modulus test, the elasticity was low in the low temperature region and high in the high temperature region when the glass fiber was reinforced. The glass fiber contents of PEGS 0.3%, Micro PPGF 0.1% and Macro PPGF 0.3% showed the highest moisture resistance and rutting resistance. CONCLUSIONS : The test results show that use of glass fiber reinforcement can increase the resistance to cracking, rutting, and moisture damage of asphalt mixtures. It is also necessary to validate the long-term performance of recycled asphalt mixtures with glass fiber using full scale pavement testing and field trial construction.

A dynamic triaxial discrete element numerical model of lightweight soil was established using the discrete element method to study the microscopic mechanism of expanded polystyrene (EPS) particles in the soil under cyclic loading. The microscopic parameters of the discrete element model of the lightweight soil were calibrated depending on the dynamic triaxial test hysteresis curves. Based on the calibration results, the effects of the EPS particles volume ratio and amplitude on the contact force, displacement field, and velocity field of the lightweight soil under different accumulated strains were studied. The results showed that the hysteresis curves of lightweight soil exhibit nonlinearity, hysteresis, and strain accumulation. The strain accumulated in remolded soil is mainly tensile strain, and that in lightweight soil is mainly compressive strain. As the volume ratio of EPS particles increased, the contact force first increased and then decreased, and the displacement and velocity of the particles increased accordingly. With an increase in amplitude, the dynamic stress of the particle system increased, and the accumulation rate of the dynamic strain of the samples also increased. At 5% compressive strain, the contact force of the particles changed significantly and the number of particles deflected in the direction of velocity also increased considerably. These results indicated that the cemented structure of the lightweight soil began to fail at a compressive strain of 5%. Thus, a compressive strain of 5% is more reasonable than the dynamic strength failure standard of lightweight soil.
Compression tests were carried out to investigate the hot-deformation behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy in the temperature range of $915^{\circ}C$ to $1015^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $10^{-3}s^{-i}$ to $10s^{-1}$. Under the given test conditions, the hot-deformation of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was mainly led by dynamic recovery rather than by dynamic recrystallization. The activation energy for the plastic deformation in $\alpha+\beta$ field was about 894 kJ/mol and $\beta$ field was 332kJ/mo1. Processing map for hot working are developed on the basis of the variations of efficiency of power dissipation($\eta$=2m/m+1) and flow instability criterion using the dynamic material model. The optimum process condition in the ($\alpha+\beta$) field was obtained at the temperature ranges of $930^{\circ}C$ to $955^{\circ}C$$^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate of $10^{-3}s{-1}$.
Forest canopy density is an essentially important for maintaining the diversify flora and fauna in the tropic. But, the natural and human disturbances have an influence over the inconsistency of forest canopy density. So, forest canopy density (FCD) has been threatened in the tropic since a decade. The objective of this study was to examine the dynamics change of the forest canopy density in tropical forest Chitwan, Nepal combine with field survey and remote sensing data. The field survey data of 2001 such as canopy cover percentage, dbh so on and some human disturbances were used. Similarly, Landsat TM 1988 and ETM+ 2001 have also used to predict the dynamic changes of the FCD over the period. Moreover, nonparametric Kruskal- Wallis test has performed for the validation of the results. Data analysis revealed that very few factors i.e. the number of trees, path, and fire had realized statistically significance at P=<0.05. Therefore we concluded that detail analysis could be needed incorporate with additional socioeconomic, climatic, biophysical and institutional factors for the better understanding of the forest canopy dynamic in particular location.
