On Diagnosis Measurement under Dynamic Loading of Ball Bearing using Numerical Thermal Analysis and Infrared Thermography (전산 열해석 및 적외선 열화상을 이용한 볼베어링의 동적 하중에 따른 진단 계측에 관한 연구)

  • With the modern machinery towards the direction of high-speed development, the thermal issues of mechanical transmission system and its components is increasingly important. Ball bearing is one of the main parts in rotating machinery system, and is a more easily damaged part. In this paper, bearing thermal fault detection is investigated in details Using infrared thermal imaging technology to the operation state of the ball bearing, a preliminary thermal analysis, and the use of numerical simulation technology by finite element method(FEM) under thermal conditions of the bearing temperature field analysis, initially identified through these two technical analysis, bearing a temperature distribution in the normal state and failure state. It also shows the reliability of the infrared thermal imaging technology. with valuable suggestions for the future bearing fault detection.

  • The reliability on high cycle fatigue damage mechanism for new blades manufactured by reverse-engineering is demonstrated by success-run test. Turbine blades always experience various dynamic loads in turbine operation, as well as being in resonance condition and forced by fluid-induced vibrations mostly during run-up/down, which may accumulate high cycle damage to the blades. The accidents caused by blade failure especially incur not only a lot of troubles to the machinery but also huge financial losses. Therefore it is necessary to verify the reliability of blades in advance for the safe use. The success run test for the reliability demonstration is designed and performed for the new blades using the technique known as resonant high cycle fatigue testing.

  • Gasket plays an important role on sealing of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. Stack requires gaskets in each cell to keep the hydrogen and air/oxygen within their respective regions. The failure of the gasket creates the problems of fuel leakage, mixing, damage on parts and can be a direct reason for the degrading the efficiency of fuel cell. The purpose of this paper researches on how mechanical properties of EPDM gasket in PEMFC are changed after long-term operations. The EPDM (ethylenepropylene-diene monomer) gaskets are obtained from the stack after long-term operations. DMA (dynamic mechanical analysis) is conducted to access the change of mechanical properties of the EPDM gasket. SEM/EDS (scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive spectroscopy) was used to show the surface topography and chemical characterization on the sample surface.

  • This paper presents simulation and small-scale experimental tests of a fault current controller. Smart fault controller as proposed and proven conceptually in our previous work is promising technology for the smart power grid where distributed and even stochastic generation sources are prevalent and grid operations are more dynamic. Existing protection schemes simply limiting the fault current to the pre-determined set values may not show best performance and even lead to coordination failures, potentially leading to catastrophic failure. Thus, this paper designs fault current controller with a full bridge thyristor rectifier, embedding a superconducting coil for which the controller is electrically invisible during normal operation because the loss due to the coil is near-zero. When a fault occurs and the resulting current through the superconducting coil exceeds a certain value set intelligently based on the current operating condition of the grid, the magnitude of the fault current is controlled to this desired value by adjusting the firing angles of thyristors such that the overall system integrity is successfully maintained. Detailed time-domain simulations are performed and lab-scale testing circuits are built to demonstrate the desired functionality and efficacy of the proposed fault current controller.

Finite element development of a Beam-column connection with CFRP sheets subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading

  • Beam-column joints are recognized as the weak points of reinforcement concrete frames. The ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) frames during severe earthquakes can be measured through the dissipation of large energy in beam-column joint. Retrofitting and rehabilitating structures through proper methods, such as carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), are required to prevent casualties that result from the collapse of earthquake-damaged structures. The main challenge of this issue is identifying the effect of CFRP on the occurrence of failure in the joint of a cross section with normal ductility. The present study evaluates the retrofitting method for a normal ductile beam-column joint using CFRP under monotonic and cyclic loads. Thus, the finite element model of a cross section with normal ductility and made of RC is developed, and CFRP is used to retrofit the joints. This study considers three beam-column joints: one with partial CFRP wrapping, one with full CFRP wrapping, and one with normal ductility. The two cases with partial and full CFRP wrapping in the beam-column joints are used to determine the effect of retrofitting with CFRP wrapping sheets on the behavior of the beam-column joint confined by such sheets. All the models are subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The final capacity and hysteretic results of the dynamic analysis are investigated. A comparison of the dissipation energy graphs of the three connections shows significant enhancement in the models with partial and full CFRP wrapping. An analysis of the load-displacement curves indicates that the stiffness of the specimens is enhanced by CFRP sheets. However, the models with both partial and full CFRP wrapping exhibited no considerable improvement in terms of energy dissipation and stiffness.

A Study on the Design of a High-Speed Heddle Frame (고속 직기용 복합재료 헤들 프레임의 설계에 관한 연구)

  • The up and down speed of heddle frames that produce woven cloth by insertion of weft yarns between warp yarns has been increased recently much for productivity improvement, which induces higher inertial stresses and vibrations in the heddle frame. the heddle frame is required to reduce its mass because the heddle frame contributes the major portion of the stresses in the heddle frames during accelerating and decelerating. Conventional aluminum heddle frames have fatigue life of around 5 months at 550rpm due to their low fatigue flexural strength as well as low bending stiffness. In this work, since carbon/epoxy composite materials have high specific fatigue strength(S/p), high specific modulus(E/p), high damping capacity and sandwich construction results in lower deflections and higher buckling resistance, the sandwich structure composed of carbon/epoxy composite skins and polyurethane foam were employed for the high-speed heddle frame. The design map for the sandwich beams was accomplished to determine the optimum thickness and the stacking sequences for the heddle frames. Also the effects of the number of ribs on the stress of the heddle frame were investigated by FEM analyses. Finally, the high-speed heddle frames were manufactured with sandwich structures and the static and dynamic properties of the aluminum and the composite heddle frames were tested and compared with each other.

Fast Group Scanning Scheme in IEEE 802.16e Networks (IEEE 802.16e에서 그룹 기반의 빠른 스캐닝 기법)

  • The mobile station which is about to do handover in IEEE 802.16e networks scans its neighboring base station channels to decide its next target base station. However, due to the lack of location information of its subscribers, the serving base station cannot provide any reliable candidate channel which is actually attachable by the scanning mobile stations, which makes the mobile station suffer from the long scanning time. Sometimes, long scanning time may cause the degradation of quality of service due to repeatable scan-duration or failure to start the handover procedure in time. To overcome these problems, in this paper, we propose a new protocol so called fast group scanning scheme, in which multiple mobile stations form a group to scan their neighboring base station channels simultaneously. Main contribution of this proposal is to find and decide a reliable target base station within a short scanning time. The fast group scanning scheme can be deployed to the cell network of the serving base station with a dynamic neighboring base station list management.

Application of Isolation System to the Lighthouse Structure (등대구조물의 면진시스템 적용방안 연구)

  • In this study, seismic isolation technology to the lighthouse structure is suggested and isolation effects on response reduction are studied for three types of isolation models with the proposed seismic isolation technology. A seismic isolation system is installed on the base of the lighthouse structure in model 1, on the base of the lighthouse lens in model 2, and on the base of both of them in model 3. The dynamic time history analysis verifies that in case of model 1, the earthquake loading is greatly reduced and the accelerations of superstructure are greatly reduced. Also, the inter-story drifts are very small and can be neglected. The isolated model is in translational state and can be seen as a rigid whole. as a results, model 1 is very effective to mitigate the influence of earthquake on structures. In model 2, isolation effects are valid but special care should be taken to failure of the non-isolated lighthouse sub-structure. In model 3, isolation effects are also valid but the effects are small. model 3 is less effective than model 1.

Acoustic Loads Reduction of Composite Plates for Nose Fairing Structure (노즈 페어링 구조용 복합재 평판의 음향 하중 저감 특성)

  • Acoustic load generated by rocket propulsion system is one of major dynamic loads during lift-off phase so that it causes the structural failure and electronic malfunction of payloads. Acoustic loads can be greatly reduced by an appropriate acoustical design of nose faring structures. This paper deals with the acoustical design of the nose fairing structure for launch vehicle. It is well known that a honeycomb sandwich structure is a poor sound insulator because of its high specific stiffness. In this paper, the sound transmission characteristics of four kinds of honeycomb structures for noise fairing were investigated by means of numerical and experimental ways. In order to estimate transmission loss, infinite plate theory by Moore and Lyon and statistical energy analysis (SEA) method were used. The predicted results showed a good agreement with measured ones. These enabled us to determine a proper core material for nose fairing, which shows good sound insulation performance per weight.

Durability Assessment of Polyoxymethylen Using Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing (초음파 피로시험법을 이용한 엔지니어링 플라스틱 (Polyoxymethylen ; POM)의 내구성 평가)

  • In this study, a newly developed ultrasonic fatigue test was performed for durability assessment of polyoxymethylene engineering plastic, which has a high crystallization rate and degree of crystallization. Fatigue strength of POM (polyoxymethylene) was performed on a piezoelectric UFT developed by Mbrosia Co., Ltd(1), operating at a high frequency of 20 kHz. The test results showed a fatigue limit of 5.0~6.0 MPa under fatigue testing at R = -1, 20kHz; and, electron microscopy revealed the size effect by risk volume and fractured dimple structure after the coalescence of micro-voids through the crazing effect, which occurs during the failure of a polymer.
