The paper summarizes the dynamic-based assessment of a reinforced concrete arch bridge, dating back to the 50's. The outlined approach is based on ambient vibration testing, output-only modal identification and updating of the uncertain structural parameters of a finite element model. The Peak Picking and the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition techniques were used to extract the modal parameters from ambient vibration data and a very good agreement in both identified frequencies and mode shapes has been found between the two techniques. In the theoretical study, vibration modes were determined using a 3D Finite Element model of the bridge and the information obtained from the field tests combined with a classic system identification technique provided a linear elastic updated model, accurately fitting the modal parameters of the bridge in its present condition. Hence, the use of output-only modal identification techniques and updating procedures provided a model that could be used to evaluate the overall safety of the tested bridge under the service loads.
Dynamic characteristics, named as natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes, affect the dynamic behavior of buildings and they vary depending on the construction stages. It is aimed to present the effects of construction stages on the dynamic characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings considering theoretical and experimental investigations. For this purpose, a three-storey RC building model with a 1/2 scale was constructed in the laboratory of Civil Engineering Department at Karadeniz Technical University. The modal testing measurements were performed by using Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) method for the bare frame, brick walled and coated cases of the building model. Randomly generated loads by impact hammer were used to vibrate the building model; the responses were measured by uni-axial seismic accelerometers as acceleration. The building's modal parameters at these construction stages were extracted from the processed signals using the Enhanced Frequency Domain Decomposition (EFDD) technique. Also, the finite element models of each case were developed and modal analyses were performed. It was observed from the experimental and theoretical investigations that the natural frequencies of the building model varied depending on the construction stages considerably.
The sine sweep base excitation test campaign is a major milestone in the process of mechanical qualification of space structures. The objectives of these vibration tests are to qualify the specimen with respect to the dynamic environment induced by the launcher and to demonstrate that the spacecraft FE model is sufficiently well correlated with the test specimen. Dynamic qualification constraints lead to performing base excitation sine tests using a sine sweep over a prescribed frequency range such that at each frequency the response levels at all accelerometers, load cells and strain gages is the same as the steady state response. However, in practice steady state conditions are not always satisfied. If the sweep rate is too high the response levels will be affected by the presence of transients which in turn will have a direct effect on the estimation of modal parameters. A study funded by ESA and AIRBUS D&S was recently carried out in order to investigate the influence of sine sweep rates in actual test conditions. This paper presents the results of this study along with recommendations concerning the choice of methods.
The paper presents the possibilities of a wide practical application of the modal analysis methods in dynamic testing of vertical pump. A pneumatic impact of testing vertical pumps submerged under deep water was developed and successfully applied. The problem with the enviroment is the it causes significants changes in modal parameters, compared with those in the airenviroment.
Modal Analysis is the process of characterizing the dynamic properties of an elastic structure by identifying its modes of vibration. A mode of vibration is a global property of an elastic structure. That is, a mode has a specific natural frequency and damping factor which can be identified from response data at practically any point on a structure, and it has a characteristic mode shape which identifies the mode spatially over the entire structure. Modal testing is able to be performed on structural and mechanical structure in an effort to learn more about their elastic behavior. Once the dynamic properties of a structure are known its behavior can be predicted and therefore controlled or corrected. Resonant frequencies, damping factors and mode shape data can be used directly by a mechanical designer to pin point weak spots in a structure design, or this data can also be used to confirm or synthesize equations of motion for the elastic structure. These differential equations can be used to simulate structural response to know input forces and to examine the effects of pertubations in the distributed mass, stiffness and damping properties of the structure in more detail. In this paper the measurement of transfer functions in digital form, and the application of digital parameter identification techniques to identify modal parameters from the measured transfer function data are discussed. It is first shown that the transfer matrix, which is a complete dynamic model of an elastic plate structure can be written in terms of the structural modes of vibration. This special mathematical form allows one to identify the complete dynamics of the structure from a much reduced set of test data, and is the essence of the modal approach to identifying the dynamics of a structure. Finally, the application of transfer function models and identification techniques for obtaining modal parameters from the transfer function data are discussed. Characteristics on vibration response of elastic plate structure obtained from the dynamic analysis by Finite Element Method are compared with results of modal analysis.
This paper presents experimental modal analysis and static load testing results to validate the accuracy of dynamic parameters-based damage locating indices in RC structures. The study investigates the accuracy of different dynamic-based damage locating indices compared to observed crack patterns from static load tests and how different damage levels and scenarios impact them. The damage locating indices based on mode shape curvature and mode shape fourth derivate in their original forms were found to show anomalies along the beam length and at the supports. The modified forms of these indices show higher sensitivity in locating single and multi-cracks at different damage scenarios. The proposed stiffness reduction index shows good sensitivity in detecting single and multi-cracks. The proposed anomalies elimination procedure helps to remove the anomalies along the beam length. Also, the adoption of the proposed weighting method averaging procedure and normalization procedure help to draw the overall crack pattern based on the adopted set of modes.
This paper is to investigate the dynamic characteristics of prestressed concrete (PSC) girder that has been spliced with precast box segments. A 20 m long full-scale spliced precast concrete box railway girder was fabricated and tested to identify its dynamic properties against a monolithic girder. The monolithic girder has the same geometric and material properties with respect to the spliced girder. Dynamic parameters including natural frequency, mode shape, and damping ratio were identified using the a digitally controlled exciter. Modal analyses were performed based on three-dimensional finite element models, and the calculated modal parameters were compared with test results. Finally, the characteristic decrease of natural frequency due to damage for each girder has been examined after the load test.
In the case of the external cylindrical grinding machine, the grinding mechanism can cause a wheel to vibrate due to a wheel cutter. This phenomena will bring about the unsymmetric wear up to high frequency without any relation of rotational speed. So far, when the grinding spindle is analyzed, it is assumed that a wheel is considered as lumped mass at the endof a beam. Nowadays, there is a tendency to use the wheel with a lsrge diameter or CBN wheel to achieve the high speed and accuracy grinding performance. Therefore, this kind of assumption is no longer valid. At the analysis of the grinding spindle, the parameter which dapends on the dynamic characteristics is a combination force between each part. For example, there is the tightness torque of a bolt and taper element in the grindle. In addition, the material property of the wheel can contribute the dynamic characteristics. This paper shows the mode participation of the shell mode of the wheel in the grindle and the dynamic characteristics according to the parameters which are the configuration of the flange and tightness torque of a bolt and taper. Modal parameter of the wheel, flange and the spindle can be extracted through frequency response function obtained by modal test. After that, by changing the tightness torque and kinds of wheel, we could accomplish the test in the whole combined grinding spindle. To perform modal analysis of vibration characteristics in the grinding spindle, we could develop the model of finite element method.

A series of field vibration tests are conducted on the Runyang Suspension Bridge during both the construction and operational stages. The purpose of this study is devoted to the analysis of the dynamic characteristics of the suspension tower. After the tower was erected, an array of accelerometers was deployed to study the evolution of its modal parameters during the construction process. Dynamic tests were first performed under the freestanding tower condition and then under the tower-cable condition after the superstructure was installed. Based on the identified modal parameters, the effect of the pile-soil-structure interaction on dynamic characteristics of the suspension tower is investigated. Moreover, the stiffness of the pile foundation is successfully identified using a probabilistic finite model updating method. Furthermore, challenges of identifying the dynamic properties of the tower from the coupled responses of the tower-cable system are discussed in detail. It's found that compared with the identified results from the freestanding tower, the longitudinal and torsional natural frequencies of the tower in the tower-cable system have changed significantly, while the lateral mode frequencies change slightly. The identified modal results from measurements by the structural health monitoring system further confirmed that the vibrations of the bridge subsystems (i.e., the tower, the suspended deck and the main cable) are strongly coupled with one another.
