  • Uniaxial compression tests are performed under various loading rates to study the influence of loading rate on the compressive strengths and deformation behaviours. The rock samples adopted in this experiments are Onyang granite, Hambaek sandstone, Hambaek shale and Donghae limestone. Total 120 specimens are prepared for this study. As the loading rate increases from static to dynamic state which is about the level of $800{\sim}1,400kgf/cm^2/sec$, the uniaxial compressive strengths are also increased within the range of 40%. And Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio show similar trends but have a little lower rates of increase when compared with that of uniaxial compressive strength.

  • Poly(1,2-propylene glycol adipate) (PPA) was used as an environmentally friendly plasticizer in flexible poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). Thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the PVC/PPA blends were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, tensile test, scanning electron microscopy and small amplitude oscillatory shear rheometry. The results showed that PPA lowered the glass transition temperature of PVC. The introduction of PPA could decrease tensile strength and Young's modulus of the PVC/PPA blends; however, elongation-at-break was dramatically increased due to the plastic deformation. The plasticization effect of PPA was also manifested by the decrease of dynamic storage modulus and viscosity in the melt state of the blends. The results indicated that PPA had a good plasticizing effect on PVC.

  • Coarse granular materials such as gravel, rubble is used as major fill materials in earth structures of railway, road and dam. Therefore, it is essential to accurately evaluate properties of these materials for reasonable design and construction. In the precedent study, we built large triaxial testing system and verified system compliance with a focus on the dynamic properties. And we could secured the reliability of the system. In this study, the cyclic triaxial tests were performed in various experimental conditions on coarse granular material. Two series of parallel graded samples are prepared by mixing crushed rock. The influence of grain size, loading pattern, loading frequency, and fine contents were analyzed and discussed.

  • This paper studies the Element Connectivity Parameterization Method(ECP method) for topology optimization considering dynamic compliance. The previous element density based topology optimization method interpolates Young's modulus with respect to design variables defined in each element for topology optimization. Despite its various applications, these element density based methods suffer from numerical instabilities for nonlinear structure and multiphysics systems. To resolve these instabilities, recently a new numerical method called the Element Connectivity Parameterization(ECP) Method was proposed. Unlike the existing design methods, the ECP method optimizes the connectivities among plane or solid elements and it shows some advantages in topology optimization for both nonlinear structure and multiphysics systems. In this study, the method was expanded for topology optimization for the dynamic compliance by developing a way to model the mass matrix in the framework of the ECP method.

The following conclusions were drawn; 1. The unit weight was in the range of $2,216{\sim}2,325kgf/m^3$, the weights of those concrete were decreased 1~6% than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 2. The highest strength was achieved by 10% rice-husk ash filled rice-husk ash concrete, it was increased 8% by compressive strength, 17% by tensile strength and 18% by bending strength than that of the normal cement concrete, respectively. 3. The ultrasonic pulse velocity was in the range of 3,252~4,016 m/s, which was showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The highest ultrasonic pulse velocity was showed by 10% rice-husk ash filled rice-husk ash concrete. 4. The dynamic modulus of elasticity was in the range of $242{\times}10^3{\sim}306{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2$, which was showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The highest dynamic modulus was showed by 10% rice-husk ash filled rice-husk ash concrete. 5. The static modulus of elasticity was in the range of $185{\times}10^3{\sim}275{\times}10^3kgf/cm^2$, which was showed about the same compared to that of the normal cement concrete. The poisson's number of rice-husk ash concrete was less than that of the normal cement concrete. The dynamic modulus was increased approximately 11~30% than that of the static modulus. 6. The durability was increased with increase of the content of rice-husk ash. The durability was increased 1.3 times by 10% rice-husk ash, 1.6times by 20% rice-husk ash filled concrete than that of the normal cement concrete. respectively.

  • Soil deformation on the off-load ground is significantly affected by soil conditions, such as soil type, water content, and etc. Thus, the soil characteristics should be estimated for predicting vehicle movements on the off-load conditions. The plate-sinkage test, a widely-used experimental test for predicting the wheel-soil interaction, provides the soil characteristic parameters from the relationship between soil stress and plate sinkage. In this study, soil stress under the plate-sinkage situation is calculated by the DEM (Discrete Element Method) model. We developed a virtual soil bin with DEM to obtain the vertical reaction forces under the plate pressing the soil surface. Also parametric studies to investigate effects of DEM model parameters, such as, particle density, Young's modulus, dynamic friction, rolling friction, and adhesion, on the characteristic soil parameters were performed.

  • Typical lip seals are widely used as sealing mechanism of rotary and reciprocating shaft. Double lip seal has comparatively high stiffness and dynamic radial eccentricity. Usually material of these seals is made of elastomer and nonlinear finite element analysis is required to analyze behaviour of this material because Young's modulus is varied with working load. In this paper, MSC MARC/MENTAT is used for nonlinear analysis of double lip seal with pressure variation and interference. The contact normal force of double lip seal between lip and shaft is analyzed to reduce power loss when shaft rotates.

  • Despite the fact that vibration and noise of suction and discharge valves are important factors to be considered in reciprocating compressor designs, such are still have many problems to be developed. Subsequently, this paper addresses a thorough investigation to retrieve basic data for designing suction and discharge valve. In achieving this goal, the natural frequencies in suction and discharge valve were calculated using finite elements method and compared with the results of experimental method which is driven by the speaker and detected by the Laser Velocity Transducer. Also, it was found that natural frequencies are much affected by the Young's Modulus at the clamp. Therefore, improved experimental setup is suggested to consider the effect of clamping conditions. Consequently improved experimental data have good agreements with the FEM data.

  • This paper aims to examine the dynamic response of a newly designed ultrasonic motor under half-sine shock impulses. Impact shock was applied to the motor along x, y or z axis respectively with different pulse widths to check the sensitivity of the motor to the shocks in different directions. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) with the ANSYS software was conducted to obtain the relative displacement of a key point of the motor. Numerical results show that the maximum relative displacement is of micro meter level and the maximum stress is five orders smaller than the Young's modulus of the piezo material, which proves the robustness of the motor.

  • The vibration of a flexible cantilever tube with nonlinear constraints when it is subjected to flow internally with fluids is examined by experimental and theoretical analysis. These kinds of studies have been performed to find the existence of chaotic motion. In this paper, the important parameters of the system leading to such a chaotic motion such as Young's modulus and the coefficient of viscoelastic damping are discussed. The parameters are investigated by means of system identification so that comparisons are made between numerical analysis using the design parameters and the experimental results. The chaotic region led by several period-doubling bifurcations beyond the Hopf bifurcation is also re-established with phase portraits, bifurcation diagram and Lyapunov exponent so that one can define optimal parameters for system design.
