  • Nanotechnology, the science of manipulating matter at the nanoscale, offers remarkable opportunities for innovation across various fields. Nanomaterials, which form the cornerstone of advanced materials, drive forward new ideas and groundbreaking applications. In the textile industry, traditional antibacterial and antifungal garments are typically treated with chemical compounds to inhibit bacterial growth. However, these treatments often lack durability, losing effectiveness after multiple washes. To address this limitation, the application of green nanotechnology in developing high-performance textiles emerges as a promising solution. This study explores the integration of nanocomposites into the polymer layers of footballs to enhance their stability and performance. By embedding nanoparticles within the polymer matrix, the durability and resilience of the footballs are significantly improved, leading to better control and performance on the field. This innovative approach not only extends the lifespan of the footballs but also provides economic advantages by reducing the frequency of replacements. Additionally, the enhanced stability contributes to a more consistent and reliable playing experience, promoting improved safety and performance for athletes.

  • In this paper, the quantitative evaluation method is presented for the durability performance of mountain tunnel concrete linings experiencing freezing and thawing during winter season. To analyze the freeze-thaw characteristics of lining, the freezing time of the concrete lining was measured by the outside temperature. The heat flow analysis was conducted based on the freezing time measured through the indoor experiment, and based on this, the energy required to freeze the concrete lining by the temperature of the outside air could be analyzed. In addition, the temperature change during the winter season was measured through an instrument installed on the actual tunnel concrete lining, and based on the results of indoor and field experiments, criteria for freeze-thaw environment evaluation and progress evaluation were prepared. Also, an equation using the freezing index was proposed through regression analysis.

  • In steel-concrete composite beams, to improve the cracking resistance of the concrete slab in the hogging moment region, a new type of connector in the interface, named uplift-restricted and slip-permitted screw-type (URSP-S) connector has been proposed. This paper focuses on the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams with URSP-S connectors. A total of three beam specimens including a simply supported beam with URSP-S connectors and two continuous composite beams with different connectors arrangements were designed and tested. More specifically, one continuous composite beam was equipped with URSP-S connectors in negative moment region and traditional shear studs in other regions. For comparison, the other one was designed with only traditional shear studs. The failure modes, crack evolution process, ultimate capacities, strain responses at different locations as well as the interface slip of the three tested specimens were measured and evaluated in-depth. Based on the experimental study, the research findings indicate that the larger slip deformation is allowed while using URSP-S connectors. Meanwhile, the tensile stress reduces and the cracking resistance of the concrete slab improves accordingly. In addition, the overall stiffness and strength of the composite beam become slightly lower than those of the composite beam using traditional shear studs. Moreover, the arrangement suggestion of URSP-S connectors in the composite beam is discussed in this paper for its practical design and application.

  • A difference in subgrade settlement between two rails of a track manifests as lateral differential subgrade settlement. This settlement causes unsteadiness in the motion of trains passing through the corresponding area. To illustrate the effect of lateral differential subgrade settlement on the dynamic response of a vehicle-track coupling system, a three-dimensional vehicle-track-subgrade coupling model was formulated by combining the vehicle-track dynamics theory and the finite element method. The wheel/rail force, car body acceleration, and derailment factor are chosen as evaluation indices of the system dynamic response. The effects of the amplitude and wavelength of lateral differential subgrade settlement as well as the driving speed of the vehicle are analyzed. The study reveals the following: The dynamic responses of the vehicle-track system generally increase linearly with the driving speed when the train passes through a lateral subgrade settlement area. The wheel/rail force acting on a rail with a large settlement exceeds that on a rail with a small settlement. The dynamic responses of the vehicle-track system increase with the amplitude of the lateral differential subgrade settlement. For a 250-km/h train speed, the proposed maximum amplitude for a lateral differential settlement with a wavelength of 20 m is 10 mm. The dynamic responses of the vehicle-track system decrease with an increase in the wavelength of the lateral differential subgrade settlement. To achieve a good operation quality of a train at a 250-km/h driving speed, the wavelength of a lateral differential subgrade settlement with an amplitude of 20 mm should not be less than 15 m. Monitoring lateral differential settlements should be given more emphasis in routine high-speed railway maintenance and repairs.

  • In this study, on the basis of the results of the field survey and the theoretical consideration for Korean Standard Specification for concrete durability and maintenance, the following conclusions are derived. From the survey, the prediction equation of carbonation depth for the southwest region in Korea is experimentally proposed, $y_p=5.865{\sqrt{t}}$, which predicts about 60mm of the carbonation depth for the concrete structures of 100 years, a 1st class of target endurance period, under a combined deterioration environment like a marine environment. Considering that the marginal value for a carbonation depth limitation under very severely marine environment is 25mm, in accordance with the Specification, it is found that the predicting carbonation depth for the concrete cover depths, 100mm and 60mm are 63mm and 29.4mm, respectively. In conclusion, according to the equation and the Specification, it is strongly required that the reinforced concrete structures with the cover depth under 100mm have to make a protection from combined deterioration factors by any methods like a surface coating, an increment of cover depth or an application of a special concrete.

  • The lack of safety of bridge deck structures causes frequent repair and strengthening of such structures. The repair induces great loss of economy, not only due to direct cost by repair, but also due to stopping the public use of such structures during repair. The major reason for this frequent repair is mainly due to the lack of realistic and accurate assessment system for the bridge decks. The purpose of the present research was to develop a realistic expert system, called Bridge Slab-Expert which can evaluate reasonably the condition as well as the service life of concrete bridge decks, based on the deterioration models that are derived from both the structural and environmental effects. The diagnosis assessment of deck slabs due to structural and environmental effects are developed based on the cracking in concrete, surface distress and structural distress. Fuzzy logic is utilized to handle uncertainties and imprecision involved. Finally, Bridge Slab-Expert is developed for prediction of safety and remaining service life based on the chloride ions penetration and fick's second law. Proposed expert system is based on user-friendly GUI environment. The developed expert system will allow the correct diagnosis of concrete decks, realistic prediction of service life, the determination of confidence level, the description of condition and the proposed action for repair.

  • In road pavements, it is known that cement concrete pavement has superior durability, safety compared. But in repairing pavement, cement concrete pavement is not usually applied because of the length of time while the road is interrupted when using Ordinary and Rapid-hardening Portland Cement. And Super High Early Strength Cement and Ultra Super High Early Strength Cement are not favorable for ready mixed concrete because of rapid setting time, high slump loss and other restrictions. We developed special cement developing 1 day strength of over 30.0N/mm$^2$ to open the road within 1 day and workable time is maintained over 1 hour so that it can be used as ready mixed concrete. We performed experimental overlay construction with the cement and evaluated the mechanical property and the durability. At curing temperature of 8-l8$^{\circ}C$,the flexural strength was 6.4N/mm$^2$at 1 day, so that the road can be open to traffic within 1 day. In durability test, the hardened concrete showed higher durability than Portland cement concrete.

  • This paper discusses the dynamics stress of each boom, which occurs as a result of the conflicts on a multi-joint boom at the end effector and structure. In this process, CATIA was applied to create 3D modeling, ADAMS and ANSYS were then performed using mesh analysis by obtaining the stress data to create a MNF(Modal Neutral File) of multi-joint boom. Two types of MNF models were analyzed using ADAMS FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) performing to check the validity of each model. In this process, the models were verified by ADAMS, which performs the dynamic characteristics of conflict. The ADAMS Durability was used to analyze the maximum stress between the multi-joint boom and structure.

  • This study investigates the durability of strut bar at car through structural and fatigue analyses. In this study, there are model 1 and model 2 as the analysis subjects. Model 1 is the existed one and model 2 is the improved one added with the reinforced part. Model 1 has the maximum equivalent stress of 165.11 MPa shown intensively at the welding part between the bracket and the bar. This stress is distributed over at the part of model 2 reinforced with this part. In case of fatigue analysis, there are three kinds of fatigue load as SAE bracket history, SAE transmission and sample history. The maximum fatigue life at SAE bracket history among three kinds of fatigue loads has the least value of $3.3693{\times}10^5$ cycles. The maximum fatigue life of model 2 becomes longer than that of model 1. As model 2 has the fatigue damage less than model 1, model 2 has the safety than model 1. As the fatigue durability about the configuration of strut bar is analyzed, it is thought to apply this study result into the real part effectively.
