  • There are many elastomeric joint sealant applications in construction such as structural glazing, weatherproofing and insulating glass fabrication etc. Each sealant joints require unique durability functions to perform well through building life cycle. Elastomeric joints in bathroom and kitchen is one of areas which require durable sealing. In this application, anti fungal durability is proprietary function of sealant during building life cycle. Premature failure of anti fungus resistance of sealant is putting big stresses to general contractor as well as the inhabitants due to costly rework and poor sanitation. Accordingly, when chemists design a product, they must take into account various parameters not only formulation components also test conditions in order to have long term fungal durability. This paper reviews several biocide options with various industry standards for fungus resistance performance to suggest making new test method for construction sealant industry.

  • Throughout the world, corrosion of rebar in concrete is a main form for concrete building destruction. The chloride is prime criminal. This paper presents the harm of chloride corrosion in China, the effect of chloride corrosion on the durability of concrete buildings and protection strategies for rebar corrosion.

  • Neglected buildings for long period can seriously reduce the durability of the building due to rust in rebars and deterioration in concrete quality due to exposure to outside air, and the seriousness of suspended buildings such as safety accidents and social crimes is emerging due to poor management. In this study, various problems such as the occurrence of safety accidents were analyzed through a fact-finding survey of buildings that have not been maintained due to long-term neglect in all areas of Jeju. In order to reuse a building that has been discontinued, the safety of the building structure itself must be checked. After securing safety through durability investigation, construction should be resumed or converted into a normal building through re-purposing, dismantling, remodeling, etc.

  • In this apartment market, many apartments are being reconstructed within even less than 20 years from their first construction. This entails many problems in environmental and economical facets, for which many researches are under way in several institutions and universities. International cases show that the international trend goes for remodeling of maintenance, management, and repairing rather than new building. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors of cost evaluation for establishing the time period of apartment based on durability of material and equipment while considering the economic feasibility of apartment, when remodeling as a concept of sustainability regarding building is being vitalized. This study investigates the proper period of remodeling in consideration of weight accruing to the LC(Life Cycle) and cost based on the standardized durability. The weight of cost, period establishment analysis, and LC according durability varies the data values of remodeling periods. The physical durability and cost from this data enable the investigation into not only the repair period of individual materials of the apartment but also remodeling period.

Durability Performance of Concrete using Rice Husk Ash

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the durability performance of concrete that includes rice husk ash. Chloride diffusion coefficient obtained through a rapid chloride penetration test and depth of $CO_2$ penetration obtained through a rapid carbonation test were used to evaluate latent durability. Durability characteristics for rice husk ash replacement and age were determined. Through the experiment, it was found that when the replacement ratio of rice husk ash was increased from 0% to 10%, the compressive strength of concrete containing rice husk ash was similar to that of concrete containing silica fume. This shows that the durability performance of concrete containing rice husk is excellent compared to other concretes containing admixtures.

  • As RC structures in the marine environment rapidly increase, the interest and the importance of Chloride Penetration durable design have been growing. However, there is hardly any domestic Chloride Penetration durability of RC structures designed analysis programs. Currently, Chloride Penetration durable design method is studied and launched actively as a program in the United States, Europe, Japan and etc., but it is limited to Chloride Penetration durability of RC structures excluded from maintenance construction. Also, the level of dependence on the foreign technology is high; the foreign program is imported and used when needed. The main objective is to compare and to evaluate with the durability assessment program and several conditions when considering the design of Chloride Penetration durability through the programs developed abroad.

  • This study aims to mix the base concrete by mixing latex to improve the durability performance to reduce the composite deterioration of the base concrete. Latex fiber has high resistance to freezing and thawing, adhesion, and deicing agent (calcium chloride), and it is used to secure long-term durability to reduce cracking and compound deterioration of concrete. In addition, through experiments, we are trying to find ways to improve the strength of concrete by studying the mixing of the appropriate mixing ratio of latex.

  • This study aims to solve environmental problems by reducing complex degradation and recycling industrial waste by utilizing waste fibers and blast furnace slags, which are industrial by-products. In addition, it is intended to secure long-term durability to reduce cracks. To this end, the disadvantages of fiber-reinforced concrete are to solve the problem of lowering liquidity and ensuring curing time, and to find the optimal combination when waste fibers and blast furnace slag are used together.

In this paper, a service life evaluation technique using a safety factor determined by a reliability theory for Caisson structures subjected to chloride attack is proposed.
