Monitoring corrosion of reinforced concrete beams in a chloride containing environment under different loading levels

  • Corrosion has significant adverse effects on the durability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures, especially those exposed to a marine environment and subjected to mechanical stress, such as bridges, jetties, piers and wharfs. Previous studies have been carried out to investigate the corrosion behaviour of steel rebar in various concrete structures, however, few studies have focused on the corrosion monitoring of RC structures that are subjected to both mechanical stress and environmental effects. This paper presents an exploratory study on the development of corrosion monitoring and detection techniques for RC structures under the combined effects of external loadings and corrosive media. Four RC beams were tested in 3% NaCl solutions under different levels of point loads. Corrosion processes occurring on steel bars under different loads and under alternative wetting - drying cycle conditions were monitored. Electrochemical and microscopic methods were utilised to measure corrosion potentials of steel bars; to monitor galvanic currents flowing between different steel bars in each beam; and to observe corrosion patterns, respectively. The results indicated that steel corrosion in RC beams was affected by local stress. The point load caused the increase of galvanic currents, corrosion rates and corrosion areas. Pitting corrosion was found to be the main form of corrosion on the surface of the steel bars for most of the beams, probably due to the local concentration of chloride ions. In addition, visual observation of the samples confirmed that the localities of corrosion were related to the locations of steel bars in beams. It was also demonstrated that electrochemical devices are useful for the detection of RC beam corrosion.

ICT 기반 환경모니터링 센서 데이터 검증을 위한 원스탑 플랫폼 (One-stop Platform for Verification of ICT-based environmental monitoring sensor data)

  • 기존 환경측정기기는 전자파 및 친환경 제품 인증, 내구성 시험 위주이며, 센서 신뢰성 검증 및 측정 데이터에 대한 검증은 형식 승인 및 등록, 인수시험, 초기교정, 주기시험 등을 통해 센서 성능평가 위주로 수행된다. 본 플랫폼은 각 타겟 센서별 성능평가 뿐만 아니라 센서의 데이터 신뢰성에 대한 검증체계 지원 ICT 기반 환경 모니터링 센서 신뢰성 검증 체계를 구축하였다. 환경 정보에 대한 센서 데이터를 수집할 센서보드를 제작하였고 센서 및 데이터 신뢰성 평가 및 검증 서비스 체계를 규격화 하였다. 또한, ICT 기반 센서 데이터 신뢰성 평가 및 검증을 위해 LoRa 통신을 이용한 센서 데이터 플랫폼 모니터링 프로토타입을 제작하였고 이를 스마트 시티 등에 실증 테스트하였다. 해당 시스템을 통해 받은 데이터 분석을 위해 머신러닝을 이용하여 최적화 알고리즘 개발하였다. 이를 통해 신뢰성 검증을 위한 센서 빅데이터 분석시스템을 구축하였고 통합 평가 및 검증 시스템의 기반을 마련하였다.

Multiple damage detection of maglev rail joints using time-frequency spectrogram and convolutional neural network

  • Maglev rail joints are vital components serving as connections between the adjacent F-type rail sections in maglev guideway. Damage to maglev rail joints such as bolt looseness may result in rough suspension gap fluctuation, failure of suspension control, and even sudden clash between the electromagnets and F-type rail. The condition monitoring of maglev rail joints is therefore highly desirable to maintain safe operation of maglev. In this connection, an online damage detection approach based on three-dimensional (3D) convolutional neural network (CNN) and time-frequency characterization is developed for simultaneous detection of multiple damage of maglev rail joints in this paper. The training and testing data used for condition evaluation of maglev rail joints consist of two months of acceleration recordings, which were acquired in-situ from different rail joints by an integrated online monitoring system during a maglev train running on a test line. Short-time Fourier transform (STFT) method is applied to transform the raw monitoring data into time-frequency spectrograms (TFS). Three CNN architectures, i.e., small-sized CNN (S-CNN), middle-sized CNN (M-CNN), and large-sized CNN (L-CNN), are configured for trial calculation and the M-CNN model with excellent prediction accuracy and high computational efficiency is finally optioned for multiple damage detection of maglev rail joints. Results show that the rail joints in three different conditions (bolt-looseness-caused rail step, misalignment-caused lateral dislocation, and normal condition) are successfully identified by the proposed approach, even when using data collected from rail joints from which no data were used in the CNN training. The capability of the proposed method is further examined by using the data collected after the loosed bolts have been replaced. In addition, by comparison with the results of CNN using frequency spectrum and traditional neural network using TFS, the proposed TFS-CNN framework is proven more accurate and robust for multiple damage detection of maglev rail joints.

Application of a Gas Chromatography/Luminol Detection System for Peroxyacetyl Nitrate Airborne Measurement

  • We constructed and tested an airborne peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) monitoring system based on luminol chemiluminescence detection with fast gas chromatography. This system allowed for simultaneous measurement of PAN and nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) with a time resolution of <2 min. Actual sample masses within the fixed volume sample loop at various altitudes and temperatures were adjusted to standard atmosphere, using measured pressures and temperatures. The airborne PAN measurement system was evaluated during two field studies above the southern Korean Peninsula in August and October 2009. The detection limit based on the ISO approach was 0.035 ppbv PAN, well below the observed concentrations of 0.185-1.49 ppbv during these studies. Under these conditions, the PAN mixing ratios were positively correlated with $O_x$ ($O_x=O_3+NO_2$), with slopes varying between 0.014 and 0.033 and intercepts between 22.6 and 55.1 ppbv $O_x$. The intercepts corresponded roughly to background $O_x$ mixing ratios in central Europe; however, the slopes were above the range of slopes reported in other studies. We also enhanced the durability, safety, and ease of maintenance of the PAN monitoring system by redesigning the structure of the conventional luminol cell.

Impact effect analysis for hangers of half-through arch bridge by vehicle-bridge coupling

  • Among the destruction instances of half-through arch bridges, the shorter hangers are more likely to be ruined. For a thorough investigation of the hanger system durability, we have studied vehicle impact effect on hangers with vehicle-bridge coupling method for a half-through concrete-filled-steel-tube arch bridge. A numerical method has been applied to simulate the variation of dynamic internal force (stress) in hangers under different vehicle speeds and road surface roughness. The characteristics and differences in impact effect among hangers with different length (position) are compared. The impact effect is further analyzed comprehensively based on the vehicle speed distribution model. Our results show that the dynamic internal force induced by moving vehicles inside the shorter hangers is significantly greater than that inside the longer ones. The largest difference of dynamic internal force among the hangers could be as high as 28%. Our results well explained a common phenomenon in several hanger damage accidents occurred in China. This work forms a basis for hanger system's fatigue analysis and service life evaluation. It also provides a reference to the design, management, maintenance, monitoring, and evaluation for this kind of bridge.

  • 농 수산물의 기본적인 품질향상을 위해서는 저수지의 효율적인 통합제어 관리시스템과 정확한 데이터가 절대적으로 필요하며 이는 USN을 이용하여 비용과 시간을 절감할 수 있다. 이를 위하여 본 논문에서는 수상에서 환경을 계측하여 알려줄 수 있는 수상 로봇과 환경정보를 취합하여 통신하기 위한 네트워크를 설계하고 제작하였다. 기존의 모델에 비해 내구성이 뛰어나고 저렴한 모델을 설계하였으며 ZigBee와 TRS, Wi-Fi 및 LTE 망으로 연계가 가능하도록 네트위크를 설계하였다. 또한 모의실험을 통하여 수상로봇의 탐사기능을 확인하였고 사용자 관리 프로그램을 제작하였다.

Rayleigh wave for detecting debonding in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures using piezoelectric transducers

  • Applications of fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for retrofitting, strengthening and repairing concrete structures have been expanded dramatically in the last decade. FRPs have high specific strength and stiffness compared to conventional construction materials, e.g., steel. Ease of preparation and installation, resistance to corrosion, versatile fabrication and adjustable mechanical properties are other advantages of the FRPs. However, there are major concerns about long-term performance, serviceability and durability of FRP applications in concrete structures. Therefore, structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage detection in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures need to be implemented. This paper presents a study on investigating the application of Rayleigh wave for detecting debonding defect in FRP-retrofitted concrete structures. A time-of-flight (ToF) method is proposed to determine the location of a debonding between the FRP and concrete using Rayleigh wave. A series of numerical case studies are carried out to demonstrate the capability of the proposed debonding detection method. In the numerical case studies, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model is developed to simulate the Rayleigh wave propagation and scattering at the debonding in the FRP-retrofitted concrete structure. Absorbing layers are employed in the 3D FE model to reduce computational cost in simulating the practical size of the FRP-retrofitted structure. Different debonding sizes and locations are considered in the case studies. The results show that the proposed ToF method is able to accurately determine the location of the debonding in the FRP-retrofitted concrete structure.

궤도차량의 동적 궤도장력 조절시스템 개발 (Development of a Dynamic Track Tensioning System in Tracked Vehicles)

  • The mobility of tracked vehicles is mainly influenced by the interaction between tracks and soil, so that the characteristics of their interactions are quite important fur the tracked vehicle study. In particular, the track tension is closely related to the maneuverability of tracked vehicles and the durability of tracks and suspension systems. In order to minimize the excessive load on the tracks and to prevent the peal-off of tracks from the road-wheels, the Dynamic Track Tensioning System (DTTS) which maintains the optimum track tension throughout the maneuver is required. It consists of track tension monitoring system, track tension controller and hydraulic system. In this paper, a dynamic track tensioning system is developed for tracked vehicles which are subject to various maneuvering tasks. The track tension is estimated based on the idler assembly model. Using the monitored track tension and con sidering the highly nonlinear hydraulic units, fuzzy logic controllers are designed in order to control the track tension. The track tensioning performance of the proposed DTTS is verified through the simulation of the Multi -body Dynamics tool.

  • Concrete micro-cracks that are grown while the structures are under construction or in service, propagate gradually or rapidly by external forces and environmental effects. As described above, almost concrete structures generally have cracks, so for the safety and durability of structures, studies to detect cracks using nondestructive tests have been treated in great deal. The purpose of this study is to evaluate characteristics of AE signals detected from notched concrete beams bending test with different loading using one of nondestructive test, Acoustic Emission (AE) method. Furthermore this study predicts the location of initial crack and measures direction of crack propagation for on-line monitoring before the crack really grows in structures by using two-dimensional AE source location based on rectangular method with three-point bending test. This will allow efficient maintenance of concrete structures through monitoring of internal cracking based on acoustic emission method.

기후데이터 분석을 통한 태양광모듈의 내구성 평가 기준 제안 (Suggestion of PV Module Test Methods Based on Weathering Monitoring)

  • The photovoltaic (PV) system consists of solar cells, solar modules, inverters and peripherals. The related evaluation and certification are proceeding as standards published by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) TC (Technical Committee) 82. In particular, PV module is a component that requires stable durability over 20 years, and evaluation in various external environments is very important. Currently, IEC 61215-based standards are being tested, but temperature, humidity, wind and solar radiation conditions are not considered in all areas. For this reason, various types of defects may occur depending on the installation area of the same photovoltaic module. In particular, the domestic climate (South Korea) is moderate. The various test methods proposed by IEC 61215 are appropriate, excessive, or insufficient, depending on environmental condition. In this paper, we analyze the climate data collection for one year to understand the vulnerability of this test method of PV modules. Through this, we propose a test method for PV module suitable for domestic climatic conditions and also propose a technical consideration for installation and design of PV system.
