An experimental research was performed using fibers for the purpose of retrofitting existing reinforced concrete circular columns. Glass fiber (GF) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) were used as well as combined GF+PET (HF). PET has high tensile strength (over 600 MPa) and high ductility (about 15%), but has very low elastic modulus (about 1/6 of GF). A total of four columns was tested against laterally applied reverse cyclic load: control column, GF-, PET-, and HF-strengthened columns. All columns retrofitted using fibers demonstrated improved moment capacity and ductility. Moment capacity of GF-, PET-, and HF-strengthened columns was 120%, 107%, and 120% of the control column, respectively. Drift ratio of all retrofitted columns also increased by 63 ~ 83% over the control column. The final failure mode of the control column was main bar buckling. The final failure mode of the GF- and HF-strengthened columns was GF rupture while that of the PET-strengthened column was main bar rupture in tension. No damage was observed for PET at the ultimate stage due to excellent strain capacity intrinsic to PET. Current test results indicate that PET can be effectively used for seismic retrofit of RC columns. It is noted that the durability characteristics of PET needs to be investigated in the future.
This paper investigates the lap splice performance of structural steel bars embedded in high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composite(HPFRCC) with various matrix ductilities. Matrix ductility is governed fiber type and fiber volume fraction. Fiber types were polypropylene(PP), polyethylene(PE) and hybrid fiber[polyethylene fiber+steel cord(PE+SC)]. The lap splice length$(l_d)$ was calculated according to the relevant ACI code requirements for reinforcing bars in normal concrete. As the result of tests, lap splice strength of HPFRCC using PE1.5 and hybrid fiber increased by up to $82{\sim}91$ percent more than that of concrete. Splice strength and energy absorption capacity of PE0.75+SC0.75 or PE1.5(fiber volume fraction 1.5%) specimen increased more than that of PP2.0(fiber volume fraction 2.0%) specimen. Therefore lap splice performance depends on fiber tensile strength and Young's modulus more than fiber volume fraction. Also, HPFRCC appear multiple crack and ductile postpeak behavior due to bridging of fiber in cementitious composite.

This study investigated the mechanical properties of precious metal-ceramic alloy joined by the laser-welding and the soldering compared with the parent metal. Twenty-four tensile specimens were cast in precious metal-ceramic alloy and divided into three groups of eight. All specimens in the control group(group 1) were left in the as-cast condition. Group 2 and 3 were the test specimens, which were sectioned at the center. Eight of sectioned specimens were joined by soldering with a propane-oxygen torch, and the remaining specimens were joined by laser-welding. After joining, each joint diameter was measured, and then tested to tensile failure on an Instron machine. Failure loads were recorded, and then fracture stress(ultimate tensile strength), 0.2% yield strength and % elongation calculated. These data for three groups were subjected to a one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA). Neuman-Keuls post hoc test was then used to determine any significant differences between groups. The fracture locations, fracture surfaces were examined by SEM(scanning electron microscope). The results were as follows: 1) The tensile strength and 0.2% yield strength of the soldered group($280.28{\pm}49.35MPa$, $160.24{\pm}26.67MPa$) were significantly less than both the as-cast group($410.99{\pm}13.07MPa$, $217.82{\pm}17.99MPa$) and the laser-welded group($383.56{\pm}59.08MPa$, $217.18{\pm}12.96MPa$). 2) The tensile strength and 0.2% yield strength of the laser-welded group were about each 98%, 99.7% of the as-cast group. There were no statistically significant differences in these two groups(p<0.05). 3) The percentage elongations of the soldered group($3.94{\pm}2.32%$) and the laser-welded group($5.06{\pm}1.08%$) were significantly less than the as-cast group($14.25{\pm}4.05%$) (p<0.05). 4) The fracture of the soldered specimens occurred in the solder material and many porosities were showed at the fracture site. 5) The fracture of the laser-welded specimens occurred also in the welding area, and lack of fusion and a large void was observed at the center of the fracture surface. However, the laser-welded specimens showed a ductile failure mode like the as- cast specimens. The results of this study indicated that the tensile strengths of the laser-welded joints were comparable to those of the as-cast joints and superior to those of the soldered joints.

Five half-scale beam-to-column connections in a precast concrete frame were tested with cyclic loading that simulated earthquake-type motions. Five half -scale interior beam-column assemblies representing a portion of a frame subjected to simulated seismic loading were tested, including one monolithic specimen and four precast specimens. Variables included the detailing used at the joint to achieve a structural continuity of the beam reinforcement, and the type of special reinforcement in the connection (whether ECC or transverse reinforcement). The specimen design followed the strong-column-weak-beam concept. The beam reinforcement was purposely designed and detailed to develop plastic hinges at the beam and to impose large inelastic shear force demands into the joint. The joint performance was evaluated on the basis of connection strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, and drift capacity. From the test results, the plastic hinges at the beam controlled the specimen failure. In general, the performance of the beam-to-column connections was satisfactory. The joint strength was 1.15 times of that expected for monolithic reinforced concrete construction. The specimen behavior was ductile due to tensile deformability by ECC and the yielding steel plate, while the strength was nearly constant up to a drift of 3.5 percent.

Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC), which is characterized by its high strength and advanced ductile behavior that is much superior to those of convention concrete, is a useful material to make thinner and longer bridges. The precast segmental construction method utilizing UHPC has been mainly studied because cast-in-place UHPC is very difficult and complicate to be achieved. As a part of those research, the structural performance evaluation of different types of joint connection method for hybrid cable-stayed bridge utilizing UHPC by using nonlinear analyses is performed in this study. The bond stress at joint is obtained by section force analyses for a 600 m cable-stayed bridge deck, and compared with the required bond stress at joint. Analysis results show that the U Type connection and straight type connection resist the highest ultimate load and bond strength, respectively. In addition, all considered joint connection systems satisfy the bond performances at joint required in the final stage of cable-stayed bridge utilizing UHPC.

The effects of earthquakes can be devastating especially to existing structures that are not based on earthquake resistant design. This study proposes a steel grid shear wall that can provide a sufficient lateral resistance and can be used as a seismic retrofit method. The pushover analysis was performed on RC structure with and without the proposed steel grid shear wall. Obtain the performance point that the target structure for seismic loads applied to evaluate the response and performance levels. The capacity spectrum at performance point is nearly elastic range, so satisfied the performance objectives(LS level). And response modification factor(R factor) were calculated from the pushover analysis. The R factor approach is currently implemented to reflect inelastic ductile behavior of the structures and to reduce elastic spectral demands from earthquakes to the design level. The R factor increases from 2.17 to 3.25 was higher than the design criteria. As a result, according to reinforcement by steel grid shear wall, strength, stiffness, and ductility of the low-rise RC structure has been appropriately improved.

Response Modification Factor(R-factor) approach is currently implemented to reflect inelastic ductile behavior of the structures and to reduce elastic spectral demands from earthquakes to the design level. However R factors were set empirically and simply based on the professional committee consensus on observed performance of building structures during past earthquakes. Consequently some major shortcomings linked to the current R factor approach have been pointed out. Using reinforced concrete intermediate moment-resisting frames(RC IMRFs), an analytical procedure is presented in this paper to establish R factor rationally. To this end, analytical R values were evaluated based on N2 Method and compared with the values recommended by IBC 2000. Overall, the analytical results correlated well with the code values. However the results also revealed that R factor might strongly depend on the system fundamental period. As evidenced by the interstory drift index(IDI) analysis results of this study, current R-factor based(or, Life Safety based) design tends to fail in fulfilling other implicit and hopeful performance objectives such as immediate Occupancy and Collapse Prevention. Performance based design(PBD) appears to be a promising approach to meet the multi level seismic performance objectives assigned to the building structures of nowadays.
The Jangsan Quartzite of the Joseon Supergroup and the foliated granite (so-called granitlc gneiss of presumed Precambrian age) of the Yeongnam massif are in direct contact at Cheondong-ri area, 6 km @SE of Danyang. sllthough it has been thought traditionally that the Jangsan Quartzite overlies unconformably the f&ted granite, it is difficult to interpret the contact as an unconformity smce the basal conglomerate in- the lower part of the Jangsan Quartzite does not have any clast of the foliated granite, Rather, recent structural studies of this area indlcate that the contact is a ductile shear zone. However, the sense and age of the shear movement are still problematic. Our mesoscopic and microscopic studies of &tre Cheondong-11 semi-brittle shear zone involving foliated cataclasite and phyllonite, which is a pa& of the Ogdong fault, indlcate a top-to-the northeast shearing, i.e., dextral strike slip. We also performed Pb-Pb dating for the age-unknown foliated granite, since the age of deformed granite ccarr emtrain the maximum age of deformation. The whole rock and feldspar Pb isotape data for the foliated granite and a micaceous xenolith define an isoc chron age of $2.16{\pm}0.15$ Ga ($2{\sigma}$;MSWD=4.4) which is interpreted as the emplacement age of the granite. This early Proterozoic age agrees with those of Precambrian igneous activity In the Yeongnam massif reported previously. The obtaiPrfid gge confirms the traditional idea about the age of the foliated granite and indicates that other methd(s) should be employed to constrain the age of the shear movement.
Reliability in tunnel analysis is necessary to accomplish technically sound design and economical construction. For this, a thorough understanding of the construction procedure including the ground-support interaction has to be obtained. This paper describes a proper modelling technique to simulate the behavior of the steel fiber reinforced shotcrete (SFRS) which maintain the supporting capability in post-failure regime. The additional supporting effect of the steel support was also verified by 3-D analyses and a new load distribution factor were proposed. The use of the plastic moment limit (PML) alone can eliminate the occurrence of the awkwardly high tensile stress in the shotcrete and can successfully model the post-peak ductile behavior of the SFRS. But with this method, moment is limited whenever the stress caused by moment reaches tensile strength of the shotcrete irrespective of the stress by axial force. Therefore, it was necessary to find a more comprehensive method which can reflect the influence of the moment and axial force. This can be accomplished by the proper use of "liner element" which is the built-in model in FLAC. In this model, the peak and residual strength as well as the uniaxial compressive strength of the SFRS can be specified. Analyses were conducted with these two models on the 2-lane road tunnels excavated in class IV and V rock mass and results were compared with the conventional elastic beam model. Results showed that both models can reflect the fracture toughness of the SFRS which could not be accomplished by the elastic beam model.

This study summarizes the results of a research project aimed at investigating the inelastic rotation capacity of beam-column joints of reinforced concrete special moment frames. All of the test specimens were classified as special moment frame (SMF), based on the design and detailing requirements of the ACI 318-02 provisions. The acceptance criteria, originally defined for steel moment frame connections in the 1997 edition of the AISC Seismic provisions, were used to evaluate the beam-column joints of the reinforced concrete moment frames. A total of 39 test specimens were examined in detail. Most of the joints that satisfy the design requirements for special moment frame structures were found to be ductile up to a plastic rotation of 3% without any major degradation in strength. This is mainly due to the stringent ACI 318-02 requirements for special moment frame joints. The presence of transverse beams increases confinement and shear resistance of joints, which results in better performance than for joints without transverse beams. All of the SMF connections that satisfy the ACI 318-02 limitations on joint shear stress turned out to meet the acceptance criteria.
