Innovative Advanced Technology through University-Industry Collaboration: Role of Venture Capitals, Entrepreneurs and Process Management in Japan

  • The creation of academic start-up firms is an important and practical issue in the management of technology in Japan. The present study designs a model for creating academic start-up firms that fits into the social context. It focuses on the case of FIRST Program, an initiative that consists of 30 projects in innovative arenas, analyses the presence of large-scale public funding, and investigates the role of venture capitalists as support personnel in each project. As a result, the presence and significance of 'long-term escort' by an 'entrepreneurial venture capitalist (EP-VCist)' were confirmed as common features across the cases observed. EP-VCist refers to a person who can maintain and fulfil dual roles at a university and a venture capital firm, and who can take the lead throughout the venturing process as a risk taker. 'Long-term escort' is a form of support that reduces risks in the venturing process by supporting university researchers in the pre-entrepreneurial stage and by exerting a robust bridging role between a university and an industry.

Enhancing Anti-Cancer Therapy with Selective Autophagy Inhibitors by Targeting Protective Autophagy

  • Autophagy is a process of eliminating damaged or unnecessary proteins and organelles, thereby maintaining intracellular homeostasis. Deregulation of autophagy is associated with several diseases including cancer. Contradictory dual roles of autophagy have been well established in cancer. Cytoprotective mechanism of autophagy has been extensively investigated for overcoming resistance to cancer therapies including radiotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. Selective autophagy inhibitors that directly target autophagic process have been developed for cancer treatment. Efficacies of autophagy inhibitors have been tested in various pre-clinical cancer animal models. Combination therapies of autophagy inhibitors with chemotherapeutics are being evaluated in clinal trials. In this review, we will focus on genetical and pharmacological perturbations of autophagy-related proteins in different steps of autophagic process and their therapeutic benefits. We will also summarize combination therapies of autophagy inhibitors with chemotherapies and their outcomes in pre-clinical and clinical studies. Understanding of current knowledge of development, progress, and application of cytoprotective autophagy inhibitors in combination therapies will open new possibilities for overcoming drug resistance and improving clinical outcomes.

Coordination chemistry of mitochondrial copper metalloenzymes: exploring implications for copper dyshomeostasis in cell death

  • Mitochondria, fundamental cellular organelles that govern energy metabolism, hold a pivotal role in cellular vitality. While consuming dioxygen to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the electron transfer process within mitochondria can engender the formation of reactive oxygen species that exert dual roles in endothelial homeostatic signaling and oxidative stress. In the context of the intricate electron transfer process, several metal ions that include copper, iron, zinc, and manganese serve as crucial cofactors in mitochondrial metalloenzymes to mediate the synthesis of ATP and antioxidant defense. In this mini review, we provide a comprehensive understanding of the coordination chemistry of mitochondrial cuproenzymes. In detail, cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) reduces dioxygen to water coupled with proton pumping to generate an electrochemical gradient, while superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) functions in detoxifying superoxide into hydrogen peroxide. With an emphasis on the catalytic reactions of the copper metalloenzymes and insights into their ligand environment, we also outline the metalation process of these enzymes throughout the copper trafficking system. The impairment of copper homeostasis can trigger mitochondrial dysfunction, and potentially lead to the development of copper-related disorders. We describe the current knowledge regarding copper-mediated toxicity mechanisms, thereby shedding light on prospective therapeutic strategies for pathologies intertwined with copper dyshomeostasis.

U.S. and Korean teacher candidates' approaches to mathematical modeling on a social justice issue

  • Mathematical modeling activities are gaining popularity in K-12 mathematics education curricula worldwide. These activities serve dual purposes by aiding students in making sense of real-world situations intertwined with social justice while acquiring mathematical knowledge. Despite efforts to prepare teacher candidates for instructing in mathematical modeling within a single country, little attention has been given to teacher candidates' approaches to mathematical modeling on a social justice issue from different countries. This article employs an in-depth, small-scale comparative study to examine the approaches of U.S. and Korean teacher candidates in solving a justice-oriented mathematics task. Our findings reveal that, although both U.S. and Korean teacher candidates identified certain variables as key when constructing a mathematical model, Korean teacher candidates formulated a more nuanced model than U.S. candidates by considering diverse variables. However, U.S. teacher candidates exhibited a heightened engagement in linking the task to social justice issues, whereas Korean teacher candidates barely perceived real-world problems in relation to social justice concerns. This study serves as a valuable tool to inform the roles and limitations of teacher education programs, shaped within specific educational contexts.

Regulatory Roles of MAPK Phosphatases in Cancer

  • The mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) are key regulators of cell growth and survival in physiological and pathological processes. Aberrant MAPK signaling plays a critical role in the development and progression of human cancer, as well as in determining responses to cancer treatment. The MAPK phosphatases (MKPs), also known as dual-specificity phosphatases (DUSPs), are a family of proteins that function as major negative regulators of MAPK activities in mammalian cells. Studies using mice deficient in specific MKPs including MKP1/DUSP1, PAC-1/DUSP2, MKP2/DUSP4, MKP5/DUSP10 and MKP7/DUSP16 demonstrated that these molecules are important not only for both innate and adaptive immune responses, but also for metabolic homeostasis. In addition, the consequences of the gain or loss of function of the MKPs in normal and malignant tissues have highlighted the importance of these phosphatases in the pathogenesis of cancers. The involvement of the MKPs in resistance to cancer therapy has also gained prominence, making the MKPs a potential target for anti-cancer therapy. This review will summarize the current knowledge of the MKPs in cancer development, progression and treatment outcomes.

Genetic Variation of the Major Histocompatibility Complex DRB3.2 Locus in the Native Bos indicus Cattle Breeds

  • The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) plays well-defined roles in eliciting immune responses and combating infectious diseases. The major histocompatibility complex of cattle is referred to as BoLA (Bovine Lymphocyte Antigen). This genetic system is among the most polymorphic. In the present study, polymorphism of the BoLA- DRB3.2 locus in three Bos indicus breeds viz., Sahiwal, Rathi and Hariana was studied by polymerase chain reaction restriction fragment length polymorphism technique using the enzymes RsaI, Bst Y1 and Hae III. Both Sahiwal and Rathi are good Indian dairy breeds and survive under tough tropical conditions, while Hariana is a prominent dual-purpose breed reared both as a dairy animal and for bullock production. A total of 30 different BoLADRB3.2 alleles were observed to be present in the 3 Bos indicus breeds. Certain alleles were common amongst the three breeds while there were others that were unique to each breed. Allelic distribution amongst the three breeds showed that each breed had a unique allelic distribution pattern that was different from each other and also different from the earlier breeds studied so far for the existence of allelic variation at this locus. A dendogram was constructed based on the frequencies of the BoLA-DRB3 alleles using the UPGMA method. The Rathi and Hariana animals were genetically the most apart. The Hariana animals clustered on a different branch from the other two breeds viz. the Rathi and the Sahiwal. The smallest genetic distances for the DRB3 alleles were those between Sahiwal and Rathi (0.5461) while genetic distance between Hariana and Sahiwal was 0.6123. A comparison of the allelic frequencies of the BoLADRB3.2 locus in these 3 breeds viz. Sahiwal, Hariana and Rathi with the allelic frequencies present in the previously characterized Bos indicus Kankrej breed, which is a dual purpose breed reared both as a draught and a dairy animal, showed that the Bos indicus Sahiwal and Rathi breeds clustered into one group while the Hariana and Kankrej breeds formed another group. The Rathi and Sahiwal showed the least genetic distance of 0.5461 amongst the breeds whereas the Rathi and Kankrej, with a Nei''s genetic distance of 1.1622, were genetically the most distant apart.

농촌노인부부의 삶에 나타난 '생애사적 진행과정구조'의 재구성 (Reconstruction of 'the Structure of Biographical Processes' on the Lives of the Elderly Couples in the Rural Area)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 농촌노인부부들의 삶에 나타난 '생애사적 진행과정구조'를 '젠더관계'에 주목하여 재구성하는 데에 있다. 이를 위해 6쌍의 노인부부들과 개별적으로 생애사적-이야기식 인터뷰를 하였고, 인터뷰자료는 $Sch{\ddot{u}}tze$의 생애사적-이야기식 인터뷰 분석방법에 Dausien의 여성주의적 생애사 분석방법을 절충 응용하여 분석하였다. 연구결과, 본 '생애사주체들'의 삶에는 '진행곡선'을 이루는 '생애사적 진행과정구조'가 나타났다. 그런데 이러한 '진행곡선'에는 다음과 같은 두 가지 차원의 '젠더관계'가 나타나고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 첫째, '진행곡선'의 미시적 및 거시적 차원에서 '젠더관계'가 나타났는데, 남성노인들의 '진행곡선'에서는 개인적 및 가족적인 맥락만이 아니라 사회구조적인 맥락도 나타난 반면, 여성노인들의 '진행곡선'에서는 주로 개인적 및 가족적인 맥락이 나타난 젠더차이를 보였다. 둘째, '진행곡선'의 미시적 차원에서 '젠더관계'가 나타났는데, 남성노인들은 생애단계에 따라 다소의 차이가 있으나 바깥일'을 위주로 하는 단일한 역할을 담당하며 '집안일'을 수행하는 데에 소극적인 반면, 여성노인들은 전 생애에 걸쳐 '집안일'과 '바깥일'의 '이중적 역할'을 적극적으로 담당한 젠더차이를 보였다. 이를 통해서 'doing gender'가 생애사에 나타나며, 나아가 이러한 'doing gender'는 생애단계와 성에 따라 다르게 나타나고 있음을 포착할 수 있었다. 이러한 연구결과를 근거로 하여 생애사와 '젠더관계'에 주목한 실천적 함의를 논의하였다.

사외이사의 비중과 기업 인수합병 성과와의 관계: 최고경영자의 이사회 의장직 겸임에 의한 상호작용 효과 (The Interaction Effects of Outside Director Ratio and CEO Duality on Acquisition Performance)

  • 본 연구에서는 자원의존이론을 이용하여 사외이사 비중과 최고경영자의 이사회 의장직 겸임 효과가 하이테크 산업에 속해 있는 국내 상장기업의 인수합병 성과에 미치는 영향을 2004년부터 2012년까지 수행된 인수합병거래 246개를 대상으로 실증 분석하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 사외이사 비중은 인수합병 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 최고경영자가 이사회 의장직을 겸임하는 경우 인수합병 성과에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 사외이사의 비중과 최고경영자의 이사회 의장직 겸임이 지닌 상호작용의 효과를 살펴본 결과, 최고경영자가 이사회 의장직을 겸임하는 경우 사외이사의 비중이 인수합병 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 이사회 의장이 독립적인 지위를 가지는 경우 사외이사의 비중이 인수합병 성과에 부(-)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 연구결과의 타당성을 확보하기 위해 상호작용항을 통한 회귀분석 및 다양한 사건기간을 대상으로 실증분석을 수행하여 동일한 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 최고경영자가 이사회 의장직을 겸임하는 경우 리더십 강화 및 조직 내 지휘체계 확립으로 인해 기업 외부의 이해관계자로부터 정당성을 확보하게 된다. 이를 통해 이사회의 자원의존 기능이 강화되며 인수합병 성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 해석된다. 반대로 이사회 의장이 독립적인 지위를 가지는 경우 최고경영자의 최고책임자로서의 외부 정당성이 약화된다. 따라서 이사회의 자원의존 기능이 감소되고 인수합병 성과에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 기존의 선행연구에서는 최고경영자의 이사회 의장직 분리의 긍정적인 효과에 대해서 주목하였다면, 본 연구에서는 최고경영자의 이사회 의장직 겸임의 긍정적인 효과를 실증적으로 보여주었다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다고 생각한다.

글로벌 전자무역의 실현을 위한 eUCP의 역할과 개정방안 (A Study on the Roles and Revision of eUCP for Global Electronic Trading)

  • In the Spring of 2000, the Banking Commission of the ICC decided to appoint a working group to draft a supplement to the UCP 500 to clarify the position regarding electronic presentation under a documentary credit. Provisions was drafted to supplement its existing rules for documentary credit, that is, UCP 500. These new provisions known as Supplement to UCP 500 for Electronic Presentation was approved by the ICC Banking Commission at the beginning of November 2001 and came in force as of 1 April 2002 The eUCP covers matters such as definitions of key terms such as electronic record, electronic signature, format, paper document, received. An eUCP Credit must specify the formats in which electronic records are to be presented and if not, electronic records may be presented in any format. Electronic records may be presented separately and need not be presented at the same time. The purpose of this paper is to understand the main substance of eUCP and to facilitate the introduction of electronic letter of credit by studying the problems and revision of eUCP and new electronic UCP. The main substances of eUCP are electronic address as place for presentation of electronic records, flexibility of the formats of electronic records to be presented, endowment of the notice of completeness of presentation to the beneficiary, one electronic record satisfying one or more originals or copies of an electronic record, the electronic records to be examined including the electronic record at the hyperlink to an external system or the referenced system, no remark as to the time period for the examination of documents. The Roles of eUCP are the Promotion of the Electronic Trade, the Supply of Basis on the Uniform Rules for Electronic Letter of Credit, the introduction of Electronic Trade Model. The characteristics of eUCP are a supplement to the UCP, no address of any issues relating to the issuance or advice of Credit electronically, independence of specific technologies and developing electronic commerce system, that is, Bolero Service. The Problems of eUCP are flexibility of format of electronic record, heavy burden on the side of banks, and the problems regrading the number of presentation, the notice of completeness of presentation, no provision in regard to the time to examine the electronic records, and representation of the electronic records. In the revision of eUCP to resolve the problems, the things to be taken into consideration are as follows; the designation of the format allowing the banks to examine electronically, prohibition of the paper documents, the development of the system receiving the electronic records, the addition of the reception notice on the side of the banks, the setting of the time to examine the electronic records, the construction of the backup system or the dual processing system.

애니메이션 캐릭터의 역할변화 연출에 내재된 시각적 대위법 - 3D 애니메이션 <토이스토리 3> 디지털 칼라스크립트의 조명디자인을 중심으로 - (The Visual Counterpoint immanent in Production of Animated Characters' Changing Role -With Focus on the Lighting Design of 3D Animation Toystory3 Digital Colorscript -)

  • 2010년에 개봉하여 전 세계적으로 큰 성공을 거둔 3D애니메이션<토이스토리3>의 등장인물들은 영웅과 악당, 공주, 조력자처럼 누구나 이해하기 쉬운 단순하고 전형적인 역할로 분류될 수 있다. 그러나 각 캐릭터가 맡은 극중의 역할이 최종적으로 관객들에게 인지될 때까지의 과정은 매우 다채롭고 정교하게 구현되어 있어 관객들의 호기심을 효과적으로 지속시킨다. <토이스토리3>캐릭터들의 다양한 역할변화의 흐름은 '조명디자인의 시각적 리듬'을 통해 표현되는데 디지털 칼라스크립트 단계에서 그 같은 리듬을 가장 명확하게 확인해 볼 수 있다. 연구자는 주요캐릭터의 역할변화를 관객들이 어떻게 인지하는지 파악하기 위해 프롭의 민담캐릭터 분석이론을 바탕으로 작품 속의 캐릭터 역할변화를 분석해보고 캐릭터별로 유추, 의혹, 수행, 강화로 이어지는 핵심적 장면을 선별하였다. 각 캐릭터의 4개의 핵심장면이 보여주는 조명디자인의 시각적 차이를 그래프로 표현하고 분석한 결과 한명의 캐릭터가 가지는 변화는 순차적으로 리드미컬한 시각적 대조를 이루고 있었고 추가로 각각 독립된 캐릭터들의 리듬도 마치 다성 음악의 성부처럼 서로 시각적 대조와 조화를 이룬다는 것도 알게 되었다. 연구자는 이를 '캐릭터변화의 시각적 대위법'이라 칭하고 장편애니메이션<토이스토리3>속의 캐릭터연출에는 2중의 시각적 대위법이 숨겨져 있다는 결론을 도출한다. 더불어 이 같은 구성적 미학을 적극적으로 활용한 장편애니메이션 제작을 제안한다.
