  • In this paper we designed a dual-frequency circular sector microstrip antenna fed microstrip line with orthogonal polarization. The operating frequencies and polarization characteristics of the proposed antenna is calculated by using a cavity model. The antenna operating at about 1.87 GHz and 2.42 GHz is fabricated and its S-parameters and radiation patterns are measured.

  • In this paper, we consider the capacity improvement of systems exploiting dual-polarized antennas for two-user transmission. To this end, we analyze the upper bounds of ergodic capacities for multicast and unicast data services in the systems, and propose the condition for adjusting the complex cross-polarization discriminations (XPDs) to maximize the ergodic capacities. In addition, we present the adjustment condition of the complex XPDs that can achieve spectral efficiencies close to the maximum ergodic capacities with lower system complexity. Lastly simulation results demonstrate that the systems using the proposed conditions can obtain higher spectral efficiencies than the ones employing different adjustment conditions including the exiting adjustment condition.

  • Circularly polarized-dual band antenna for GPS(Global Positioning System) and satellite radio system is developed and measured. Both circular polarization and overall antenna dimension reduction are achieved by placing a partially filled high-permittivity substrate under radiating edges. The bandwidth is also improved by choosing an optimal geometric configuration with a partially filled high permittivity substrate. The proposed antenna can be installed on moving vehicles or ships.

  • A W-band Orthomode Transducer (OMT) has been developed for Korean VLBI Network (KVN) polarization observation. The OMT design was based on E-plane split-block technique using septum structure. 3-dimensional electromagnetic simulation was fully employed to optimize the performance of the OMT. Measurements of the fabricated OMT show that the return losses for the vertically and horizontally polarized modes are better than -20 dB across 80 ~ 108 GHz and the insertion losses for the both modes are less than 0.47 dB. The cross-polarization level of the OMT is less than -30 dB. The bandwidth of the developed OMT is estimated as around 30%.

  • TIn this paper, it is designed the polarization selective antenna for UHF RFID system. The proposed antenna is consist of microstrip patch antenna with dual feeding and two SPDT switches and a SP4T switch and 3dB hybrid coupler. Through control of voltage of switches, the proposed reader antenna can select horizontally linear polarization, vertically linear polarization, left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right hand circular polarization (RHCP). The proposed reader antenna satisfied 2:1 VSWR at 902MHz~928MHz. and it has under 3dB AR(axial ratio). Peak gain of antenna is 7.71dBi, 7.55dBi with linear polarization and 7.31dBic, 7.81dBic with circular polarization at x-y plane. Also Axial ratio of antenna is 2.01~2.83dB and 2.02~2.60dB respectively. It is satisfied 3dB axial ratio.

  • PMFBG sensor was fabricated using phase mask and Excimer laser. The reflected wavelength of PMFBG sensor had dual peaks due to intrinsic birefringence. To discover the polarization axes, peak sensitivity was measured under compression test. The signal characteristics of PMFBG sensor were also examined in embedding condition. The embedded PMFBG sensor in epoxy block was loaded for the transverse strain measurements. Experiments showed that the PMFBG sensor could successfully measure the transverse strain. This PMFBG sensor is useful for the structures that require measuring transverse stram.

  • We present the preliminary results from 86 GHz GMVA observations on 2 AGN - 0954+658 and 0716+714. The observation was taken with the Global mm-VLBI Array in Oct. 2010, with dual polarization mode. The aim of the observation is to produce the polarization maps of the sources, with the Stokes parameters - I, Q, U and V. The final results will be used for estimating the strength of the intrinsic magnetic field and the geometries of AGN jets.

  • A correction method of reflectivity in partial beam blockage (PBB) area is suggested, which is based on the combination of digital terrain information and self-consistency principle between polarimetric observation. First, the reflectivity was corrected by adding the radar energy loss estimated from beam blockage simulation using digital elevation model (DEM) and beam propagation geometry in standard atmosphere. The additional energy loss by unexpected obstacles and non-standard beam propagation was estimated by using the coefficient between accumulated reflectivity ($Z_H$) and differences of differential phase shift (${\Phi}_{DP}$) along radial direction. The proposed method was applied to operational S-band dual-polarization radar at Jindo and its performance was compared with those of simulation method and self-consistency method for six rainfall cases. When the accumulated reflectivity and increment of ${\Phi}_{DP}$ along radial direction are too small, the self-consistency method has failed to correct the reflectivity while the combined method has corrected the reflectivity bias reasonably. The correction based on beam simulation showed the underestimation. For evaluation of rainfall estimation, the FBs (FRMSEs) of simulation method and self-consistency principle were -0.32 (0.59) and -0.30 (0.57), respectively. The proposed method showed the lowest FB (-0.24) and FRMSE (0.50). The FB and FMSE were improved by about 18% and by 19% in comparison to those before correction (-0.42 and 0.70). We can conclude that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of rainfall estimation in PBB area.
