Calcium metaphosphate (CMP) nanofibers with a diameter of ${\sim}600nm$ were prepared using electrospun CMP/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) fibers through a process of drying for 5 h in air followed by annealing for 1 h at $650^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum. The viscosity of the CMP/PVP precursor containing 0.15 g/ml of PVP was 76 cP. Thermal analysis results revealed that the fibers were crystallized at $569^{\circ}C$. The crystal phase of the as-annealed fiber was determined to be ${\delta}-CMP\;({\delta}-Ca(PO_3)_2)$. However, the morphology of the fibers changed from smooth and uniform (as-spun fibers) to linked-particle characteristics with a tubular form most likely due to the decomposition of the inner PVP matrix. It is expected that this large amount of available surface area has the potential to provide unusually high bioactivity and fast responses in clinical hard tissue applications.
This study investigated the effects of infrared (IR) radiation combined with air blast thawing on the physical properties of pork. Regardless of air velocity, increasing IR dosage produced an exponential increase in the thawing rate of pork. This rate increased further when air blast velocity was increased. IR treatments showed significantly lower thawing loss than that of 0 Watt treatment, while increasing air velocity significantly increased thawing loss of pork (p<0.05). Increasing both IR power and air velocity tended to decrease the cooking loss of pork. Moreover, increased IR power tended to decrease the water holding capacity and shear force of pork. The shear force changes were not significant (p>0.05). Shear force also increased with increasing air velocity. In addition, the higher the air velocity the higher the shear force of pork. In Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) colour determination, control of temperature prevented discolouration from overheating of sample surface. The results suggest that IR dosage combined with air blast has potential in thawed meat quality aspects, and that humidity control could prevent surface drying.

This study was conducted to develop dry forming technology and evaluate the properties of dry formed paper made from Hw-BKP. A dry forming mold (DFM) was developed to observe the phenomena of dry forming and evaluate the properties of formed papers. To upgrade the DFM a dry forming system (DFS) was developed. This DFS was designed to improve the formation of dry formed papers and enhance the productivity of dry forming. Dry forming gave papers with greater bulk and opacity than wet forming. Tensile strength of dry formed paper was greater than that of conventional wet formed handsheet when they were made from the same dry disintegrated fibers. But tensile strength of conventional wet formed handsheet made from beaten fiber was much greater than that of dry formed paper made from dry disintegrated fibers. When solvent dried beaten fibers were used in dry forming, the tensile strength of dry formed papers reached 73.5% of the wet formed handsheets made from beaten fiber. It showed that dry forming has a significant potential in improving strength properties when proper preparation of fibers and appropriate humidification, pressing, and drying processes are employed.
This study aims to prepare a colloidal silica-containing powder to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of rivaroxaban using a self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS). We investigate the impact of colloidal silica on a nanoemulsion system for preparing powdered SNEDDS. The liquid SNEDDS comprises 30/20/50 (w/w/w) Peceol/Cremophor RH40/Tween 80, which results in the formation of the smallest droplets. Three powdered SNEDDS formulations are prepared by suspending the liquid SNEDDS formulation using colloidal silica and spray drying. The powdered SNEDDS prepared with liquid SNEDDS and colloidal silica at a ratio of 1/0.5 (w/w) exhibits the highest water solubility (0.94 ± 0.62 vs. 26.70 ± 1.81 ㎍/mL) and dissolution rate (38.4 ± 3.6 vs. 85.5 ± 3.4%, 45 min) when compared to the drug alone. Morphologically, the liquid SNEDDS is adsorbed onto colloidal silica and forms smaller particles. In conclusion, an SNEDDS containing rivaroxaban, prepared using colloidal silica, facilitates the creation of a nanoemulsion and enhances the water solubility of rivaroxaban. Accordingly, this technology holds significant potential for commercialization.
Background/Aims: In March 2022, the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) released the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/AAMI ST91:2021, their latest update on comprehensive, flexible, and semirigid endoscope reprocessing. These updated standards recommend the sterilization of high-risk endoscopes when possible and provide new recommendations for the precleaning, leak testing, manual cleaning, visual inspection, automated reprocessing, drying, storage, and transport of endoscopes. Methods: ANSI/AAMI ST91:2021 was compared with ANSI/AAMI ST91:2015 for major reprocessing differences that result in either time and/or cost increases. Time estimates were captured by explicit recommendation inclusion or taken from the literature. All the costs were estimated using publicly available resources. Results: The updated standards represent a potential 24.3-minute and 52.35 to 67.57 United States dollars increase per procedure in terms of reprocessing time and spending, respectively, not including capital investments. Capital costs per procedure were highly dependent on the procedure volume of the facility. Conclusions: The new AAMI standards recommend several major changes, such as sterilization, for facilities to reprocess and manage endoscopes between uses. As more facilities increase their reprocessing methods to reflect the updated standards, they do so at a cost and introduce several delays. As the reprocessing landscape evolves, facilities should consider their true costs and alternative solutions, such as single-use endoscopes.
Many protection methods such as surface coating, electric protection, or other methods have been applied to the numerous steel structures widely used in continental and marine areas to control their corrosion, which is done from an economic point of view. Most of these steel structures are primarily protected by coating methods. However, some steel piles under seawater are protected by the electric protection method, that is, either using an impressed current or a sacrificial anode method. Furthermore, environmental contamination may cause a severely corrosive environment, which, in turn, causes the accelerated corrosion of steel structures. Subsequently, coated steel structures could deteriorate more rapidly than the designed lifetime because of the acid rain caused by air pollution, etc. Therefore, a coating of marine paint exposed to seawater, that is, underwater hardening painting, is increasingly required to be fast drying as well as highly corrosion resistant. In this study, five types of underwater hardening paints were prepared with different resin series and additives. Their corrosion and water resistances were investigated using electrochemical methods such as corrosion potential, polarization curves, impedance and cyclic voltammogram measurements, etc. Even though it is generally accepted that the corrosion resistance of bare steel tends to increase with a shift of the corrosion potential in the noble direction, the corrosion resistance of a sample with a coating exhibited a relatively better tendency when it had a lower corrosion potential in this study. The corrosion current density was also decreased with a decrease in the diffusion limiting current density, which may mean that there is some relationship between corrosion and water resistance. The S sample of the ceramic resin series showed the relatively best corrosion and water resistance among those of samples, while the worst corrosion and water resistance were observed for the R sample of the epoxy resin series. The corrosion and water resistance of those samples tended to deteriorate with an increase in the immersion days, and their corrosion and water resistances were considered to be apparently improved by the types of resin and additives.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of microparticles of Socheongryong-tang (SCRT) on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in a mouse model. Methods: The inhalable microparticles containing SCRT were produced by spray-drying with leucine as an excipient, and evaluated with respect to the aerodynamic properties of the powder by Andersen cascade impactor (ACI). Its equivalence to SCRT extract was evaluated using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and a cigarette-smoking (CS)-induced murine COPD model. Results: SCRT microparticles provided desirable aerodynamic properties (fine particle fraction of $49.6{\pm}5.5%$ and mass median aerodynamic diameter of $4.8{\pm}0.3{\mu}m$). SCRT microparticles did not show mortality or clinical signs over 14 days. Also there were no significant differences in body weight, organ weights or serum chemical parameters between SCRT microparticle-treated and non-treated groups. After 14 days the platelet count significantly increased compared with the non-treated group, but the values were within the normal range. Inhalation of SCRT microparticles decreased the rate of neutrophils in blood, granulocytes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and level of TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 in BALF on COPD mouse model induced by LPS plus CS. This effect was verified by histological findings including immunofluorescence staining of elastin, collagen, and caspase 3 protein in lung tissue. Conclusions: These data demonstrate that SCRT microparticles are equivalent to SCRT extract in pharmaceutical properties for COPD. This study suggests that SCRT microparticles would be a potential agent of inhalation therapy for the treatment of COPD.
This research was conducted to investigate antioxidant activities of Juglans mandshrica forages by the irradiation of far infrared ray during leaf drying processes before compound extraction, with its potential use for activating antioxidants. The contents of total phenolics and flavonoids in the basis of a gram leaf dry weight were maximized in 20 min at 30 V of far infrared irradiation. Total phenolic content was 25.43 mg/g in the FIR treatment, while it was 21.12 mg/g in the non-FIR treatment control. Total flavonoid content was 39.38 mg/g in the FIR treatment, while it was 32.78 mg/g in the non-FIR treatment control. The contents were decreased when the condition of far infrared ray irradiation was higher voltage and longer treatment time, exhibiting 16.93 mg/g of total phenolics and 23.78 mg/g of total flavonoids in 30 min at 50 V of far infrared irradiation. The antioxidant activities were shown to positive relationships with the contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids. In this study, we concluded that content of bioactive molecules relating antioxidant activity in Juglans mandshrica forages is optimized in 20 min at 30 V of far infrared irradiation for leaf drying process.

Nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) has been intensively studied for the treatment of a plethora of pollutants through reductive reaction, however, the nano size should be of concern when nZVI is considered for water treatment, due to difficulties in recovery. The loss of nZVI causes not only economical loss, but also potential risk to human health and environment. Thus, the immobilization onto coarse or structured support is essential. In this study, two representative processes for nZVI immobilization on granular activated carbon (GAC) were evaluated, and optimized conditions for synthesizing Fe/GAC composite were suggested. Both total iron content and $Fe_0$ content can be significantly affected by preparation processes, therefore, it was important to avoid oxidation during preparation to achieve higher reduction capacity. Synthesis conditions such as reduction time and existence of intermediate drying step were investigated to improve $Fe_0$ content of Fe/GAC composites. The optimal condition was two hours of $NaBH_4$ reduction without intermediate drying process. The prepared Fe/GAC composite showed synergistic effect of the adsorption capability of the GAC and the degradation capability of the nZVI, which make this composite a very effective material for environmental remediation.
The effects of operating conditions such as benzene concentration, nitrogen flow rate, steam flow rate, and bed temperature on TSA process were experimentally investigated as a potential VOC removal technology using two kinds of beds packed with activated carbon and zeolite 13X. The TSA cycle studied was composed of the adsorption step, steam desorption step, and drying and cooling step. At 2% benzene concentration, the total adsorption amounts of zeolite 13X and activated carbon were 4.44 g and 3.65 g, respectively. Since the zeolite 13X has a larger packing density than that of the activated carbon, the larger benzene amount could be adsorbed in a single cycle. Increasing the water vapor flow rate to 75 g/hr at 2% benzene concentration reduced the desorption time from 1 hr to a maximum of 33 min. If the desorption time is shortened, the drying and cooling step period can be relatively increased. Accordingly, the steam removal and bed cooling could be sufficiently performed. The desorption amounts increased with the increase of the bed temperature. However, the energy consumption increased while the desorption amount was almost constant above $150^{\circ}C$. In the continuous cycle process, when the amount of remained benzene at the completion of the regeneration step increased, it might cause a decrease in the working capacity of the adsorbent. The continuous cycle process experiment for zeolite 13X showed that the amount of remained benzene at the end of regeneration step maintained a constant value after the fourth cycle.
