Several types of methods such as resistivity survey, ground penetration radar, etc are used for detection of levee leakage and according to the river design guidelines detection of levee leakage is performed by measuring the hydraulic conductivity of levee soil. But, the former can not verify the leakage point and degree of saturation, the latter is an after treatment method. Movable sensor, which is a high-tech TDR system developed since 2000, can obtain directly the dielectric constant profile covering the whole depth of levee. In this study, laboratory and field model experiments were carried out using movable TDR sensor in order to evaluate the applicability as detection system of levee leakage, As the result, movable TDR system has proven to be 3 times more sensitive to water contents than dry unit weight, and the results conclude that the dielectric constant, water contents and density of the ground proved to have a correlation among them, and the dielectric constant is expected to be a basic data on detection of levee leakage.
Studies were carried out at the National Institute of Animal Nutrition and Physiology, India to determine the effect of feeding chopped paddy straw (Oryza sativa) on the energy expenditure in crossbred cattle. Four crossbred cattle male, aged 5-6 years and weighing about 450 kg were used for this study. Three experimental trials, one each for the feeding of un-chopped paddy straw offered ad libitum (UCA), chopped paddy straw fed at restricted level (CR) and chopped paddy straw offered ad libitum (CA) were conducted. The quantity of un-chopped paddy straw consumed during UCA was assumed as the voluntary intake by the cattle and the same quantity was offered after chopping during CR. Each trial comprised of 21 d preliminary feeding period and 5 d of observation recording period. Expired gas was collected in Douglas bags using a face-mask and three-way valve at 6 hourly intervals i.e., at 09.30, 15.30, 21.30, and 03.30 h throughout the observation period. Expired gas and ambient air inspired by the animals were analyzed for the oxygen content through paramagnetic oxygen analyzer. Energy expenditure (EE) by the animals was calculated by determining the volume of oxygen consumed per minute (STP) and multiplying by 4.825. Paddy straw used in all the three trials contained (g/kg DM) 90.0 CP, 786 OM, 700 NDF, 489 ADF, 357 Cellulose and 60.0 ADL. Metabolizable energy (ME) was 6.9 MJ/kg DM. Dry matter intake (DMI) both in UCA and CR was about 6.8 kg, except that it was chopped in CR. Chopping has resulted in 32% improvement (9 kg) in DMI of CA as compared to that of UCA. Although ME intake was similar in UCA and CR (47.2 MJ/day), energy expenditure (EE) was higher in UCA (23.3 MJ) when compared to that of CR (19.5 MJ). The ME intake (63.3 MJ) as well as EE (27.1 MJ) was highest in CA. Energy expenditure when expressed as MJ/kg DMI was 3.48, 2.90 and 3.12; whereas as per cent of ME intake it was 50, 41 and 44 in UCA, CR and CA respectively. Our study has unequivocally confirmed that chopping of poor quality roughages like paddy straw has definite advantages not only in terms of improving the intake by decreasing the time taken for ingestion but also in reducing the energy cost of eating.
Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) treatment (1% NaOH+1.5% $H_2O_2$; 1 AHPMS, 2% NaOH+1.5% $H_2O_2$; 2AHPMS) on rate and extent of degradation of mustard straw (MS) in sacco in sheep, and its in vivo digestion and ruminal fermentation characteristics when fed to sheep with concentrate (200 g per sheep daily). The treatment of straw with 1 and 2% AHP increased its sodium content by 148 and 296% to that of untreated straw (UMS). There was significant decrease in NDF and hemicellulose contents of AHP treated straw and increase in cellulose and lignin contents. Phenolic acids like ferrulic, $\rho$-coumaric and o-coumaric significantly (p<0.001) reduced by AHP treatment of mustard straw. In first experiment the in sacco degradation of DM, OM and NDF was significantly (p<0.01) greater for 2 AHPMS than for UMS at all incubation periods. The disappearance of nutrient from 1 AHPMS and 2 AHPMS treated straws continue to increase up to 96 h whereas in UMS the peak disappearance was found at 48 h. By using the equation {(y=a+b) ($1-e^{-ct}$)} the degradation rates (c) for DM, OM, and NDF were significantly higher for UMS than AHP treated straws. Level of alkali (1 and 2%) had significant effect on degradation characteristics (a, b, c and $P_{0.05}$) of DM and NDF fraction of MS. However, the effect was not pronounced on OM fraction of MS. In feeding experiment, the intake of nutrients for DM, OM, cell wall constituents and energy was higher on 2 AHPMS, whereas no effect on the digestibility of these nutrients was observed. The apparent nitrogen retention was higher (p<0.05) both in 1 and 2 AHPMS groups. Water intake by animals was significantly increased due to AHP treated mustard straw feeding. Rumen liquor pH was higher in 2 AHPMS fed animals. The $NH_3-N$ of rumen liquor was not affected by feeding of AHP treated MS based diets. Total VFA concentration was significantly (p<0.01) higher in UMS fed group. The fractional out flow rate of DM was higher (p<0.05) in animals fed on 2 AHPMS diets compared to UMS and lAHPMS fed groups. The population of large holotrichs was higher (p<0.05) on AHP treated MS fed diets compared to UMS. The study indicated that treatment of mustard straw with AHP changed its chemical composition towards a better feed. The nutritive value of 2% AHP treated mustard straw was better in terms of dry matter intake and apparent nitrogen retention. The higher in sacco DM, OM and NDF disappearance however, was not confirmed by in vivo data in this study.

This study was carried out to assess aerobic stabilized waste sludge as liquid fertilizer for the growth of cucumber, cabbage and chrysanthemum. Sludge was pretreated with NaOH(40 meq/L) at 40$^{\circ}C$ for 330 min. The number of fecal coliforms in batch test sludge fertilizer was more efficiently reduced than those in continuous one, maybe due to longer SRT. All produced fertilizer belonged to class B according to US EPA requirement at least. Among 6 heavy metals regulated in Korea, As, Cd and Hg were not detectable in plant amended with fertilizer whereas the concentration of Cr, Cu and Pb in plant was less than 10 mg/kg dw. However, Zn and Ni, which were restricted in other country, but not in Korea, were detected in most amount of 118 mg/kg and 15.7 mg/kg, respectively. Furthermore, based on dry weight of plant, digested sludge(5.4 mg, dw) functioned as better fertilizer rather than activated sludge (4.3 mg, dw), much more fertile when those sludge was pretreated(1.24 mg, dw) compared to untreated one(1.12 mg, dw). But its fertility was 60$\sim$80% of commercial fertilizer and accumulation of Zn, Ti and Cr in plant was founded. Therefore, it could be concluded that sludge-fertilizer can be used for flower unlimitedly, but for edible plant limitedly as additive fertilizer.

It is essential to understand the decomposition characteristics for developing the optimum anaerobic digestion system of organic wastes. In this study, BMP (Biochemical Methane Potential) test using serum bottle was conducted to evaluate the anaerobic degradability of fish offal. 3 different groups of fish offal including waste from mackerel and hairtail handling except viscera and fish viscera were chosen for the substrates. Grinded fish offal was transferred anaerobically to serum bottle in amounts of 50 ml, 100 ml and 150 ml, respectively. BMP test was carried out in triplicate. Cumulative methane production and methane production rate depending on incubation time were evaluated. These results varied depending on substrate characteristics. The average values of ultimate methane yield ranged between $420ml{\cdot}CH_4/g{\cdot}VS$ and $490ml{\cdot}CH_4/g{\cdot}VS$, and the methane production and degradation rate of viscera were higher than those of other parts of fish offal. According to the analysis of elemental composition, average C/N ratio of fish offal used in this study was 5.2. Theoretical ultimate methane yield calculated from elemental composition was $522ml{\cdot}CH_4/g{\cdot}VS$. Biodegradability was calculated as 0.847.
This research was performed to find out the root characteristics of sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas LAM.) cultivars according to the cultivation regions. Total 10 sweetpotato culivars, 6 yellow, 2 purple and 2 orange, were used for experiment. Samples were cultivated in Muan, Iksan, Nonsan, Boryeong and Hamyang. Precipitation and average temperature during the growth period of sweetpotato cultivation were 882~1,682 mm and 16.7~$28.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. Accumulated temperature was 3,122~$3,282^{\circ}C$. Soil texture was found of sandy loam in Muan, Iksan and Boryeong, sandy clay loam in Nonsan, and loam in Hamyang. The yield of root, dry matter content, starch value and soluble solids contents were high in Muan. The length/width ratio was high in Hamyang. The color values of sweetpotatoes were high in Nonsan. The protein content of sweetpotato powder was high in the Iksan, crude fat content and ash content were high in the Hamyang. The results of this study, we could see that root characteristics of sweetpotato in the same cultivars appeared differently depending on the cultivated regions.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of operating temperatures on decomposition and physicho-chemical properties of household food wastes in a fermentation dryer, which was manufactured by Samwoo Co. Ltd. The household food wastes of 100 kg can be put and dried in this dryer at once. The experiments were performed at each temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $55^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$ for two days respectively. The samples taken at the fixed time were dried at $105^{\circ}C$ and analyzed to find the decomposition rate and the concentration of each substance. The results obtained were as follows: The decomposition rate at 35 and $70^{\circ}C$ was the highest and showed the similar tendency during the experimental period. The higher the operating temperature was, the faster the water content of the composting material reduced. pH value increased at the operating temperature of 55 and $70^{\circ}C$ and was higher than at the other operating temperatures. Nitrogen content did not show any tendency during the experimental period. $P_2O_5$ and CaO content increased during the experimental period but MgO, $K_2O$ and NaCl were not accumulated. Cu content based on dry matter was in the range of ND~100.4 mg/kg and Cd, Pb and Cr were not detected.
This study was carried out to develop a seedling raising method without nursery soils in automatic raising facility of rice seedlings for machine transplanting. Pre-germinated seeds were sowed on the seed trays with three different seats such as paper seat, corrugated board, and polyethylene film instead of nursery soils. The growth characteristics of the seedlings for 20 days after sowing were compared with that of a conventional standard raising method with nursery soils. There was no difference in plant height of 10-day old seedlings among the different nursery methods, but the plant height of seedlings grown for 15 days after sowing in the trays with fivefold newspaper and nursery soils was significantly taller than those on other nursery conditions. Dry weight of seedlings grown in the tray with fivefold newspaper bottom was heavier than those in nursery trays with a corrugated board and a piece of polyethylene film. The seedlings grown in a nursery tray with fivefold newspaper showed better seedling quality and root-mat formation compared with the other nursery trays. This result suggests that the healthy seedlings for machine transplanting can be raised in the paper-sheet tray without nursery soils. The labour hours and cost required for the soil-free method using paper was reduced by about 49.3% and 26.6%, respectively, compared with the semi-adult seedling on nursery soils.

This research was carried out to produce rainbow-colored roses from white cut rose, Rosa hybrida 'Denice', to meet customers' desire of having various colors of roses. The higher temperature of dyeing solution used, the faster coloring time surveyed. In high temperature, the flowering speed of cut flower accelerated and after treating more than 4 hours, the edges of flowers became too dark or dry. In the condition of concentration of dyeing solution, $11g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ dyed faster than $7.5g{\cdot}L^{-1}$, however, no differences between $15g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and $11g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ have observed. It looked fast coloration at the stage of early blooming, but all three different petal opening stages need similar time to get even coloration from outer to inner petals. For the consideration of commercial value, flowers with 3-4 petals opened are better quality than flowers with less petals opened. It was possible to make rainbow-colored rose by dipping 'Denice' with 3 primary color combination, Hot Pink, True Blue, and Yellow dyes, at the best result conditions of $20^{\circ}C$ solution temperature, 3-4 petals opening stage, 11g/L concentration of dye solution and 3 hours dipping, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the productivity of Hanwoo steers by feeding self-product organic rice straw and concentrates(conventional, T1 and organic T2). Sixteen Hanwoo steers(8 months on the average) were randomly assigned to two treatment groups. Feeding trail was carried out in 2 treatment(8 heads/ treatment) by Hanwoo steers for 600 days form 8 to 28 months in age. The range of average daily gains of T1 and T2 were 0.76 to 0.77kg in the growing stage, 0.93 to 0.90kg in the first fattening stage, 0.99 to 0.84kg in the middle fattening stage, and 0.59 to 0.64kg in the latter fattening, respectively, and the gains for overall period was higher in T1 than in T2. Concentrates and total digestive nutrients(TDN)(T1) intakes per unit of kg gains were higher than T2 without significant difference. In carcass characteristics, the carcass weight in T1 were higher about 5% than in T2. According to the above results, it may be concluded that dry matter(DM) intakes, crude protein(CP) and TDN contents of feedstuff between treatments was no significant difference. but marbling in T2 score was higher than in T1 about 20%. There were no significant differences rib-eye area, back fat thickness and fat color(p>0.05).
